I think this film is about duality. And I understood the comparison. When she realized both states of the mind only exist within herself. The peace she felt in the tropical location to escape the city. But also the depression. Sometimes the problem doesn't exist outside of ourselves. But that doesn't necessarily mean we can easily switch it off either. And the movie is compelling symbolism. Depression can be a very boring and repetitive place. And also surreal. This movie sort of reminded me of Melancholia. Just watching the progression of those feelings from an outside perspective. How it just consumes you quietly. It's like living in a dark world and no one can really crawl inside of you and save you. It's horrific. The movie also has gorgeous shots of nature. I really enjoyed the experience.
You can tell they had a bigger budget this time. I'd say there was more violence in this movie compared to the first. But it's still very absurd and unrealistic. So I found it pretty easy to handle even as someone who's squeamish. The special effects were really cool. The movie has some visually striking elements like Sienna's room, her costume and makeup. I liked the aesthetic. A little tribute to the 80s. Art is still ruthless but likeable with his quirky, silent gestures. Unlike the first one, a plot actually forms here. It really didn't have to be over 2 hours long, but if you want blood and violence this will quench your thirst. I also liked the main characters in this one. And was pleasantly surprised at the end. Very campy and very fun. More silly than scary.
