Aside from them not including the characters of Emily (the aunt that actually raised Fanny) and Davey (who plays an even more important part), I think the casting is excellent. Sure Rosamund Pike looks nothing like what Mitford described Fanny as but she does embody the nature of Fanny. I can't think of who better to play Matthew and Sadie but Alan Bates and Celia Imrie. Davey played a very important part in the novels, and in this version they merely lump his part into Lord Merlin; and he was also the one of funniest part of the novels with his hypochondria. They also dismissed the eldest Radlett daughter, Louisa, as really she marries straight off but is the one who had the disastrous coming out ball. I thought it was a fun production nonetheless.
This film is the perfect romantic film. I love John Cusack, and all my friends who wonder why me a teenager would be crushing on this guy who definitely won't be on MTV anytime soon, never wondered why after seeing this amazing film. Lloyd Dobler, we all want a guy like him, he's great, charming, unassuming, sweet, every pleasing adjective he is it. Guys should take note. Say Anything... has everything: a great cast including the likes of Joan Cusack, Lili Taylor, John Mahoney, Eric Stoltz, Ione Skye, everyone else is great; a great director, if you don't like Cameron Crowe movies there is something wrong with you and you need to have it checked, he just happens to be the next Billy Wilder; which makes me think that John Cusack could be our next character actor in the style of the late great Jack Lemmon; the sense of teenage romance and rebellion is pitch perfect. I highly recommend this film.
This show was so great, it celebrated childhood, punished the adults, but it still was a show that kids and adults could watch together. The actors were amazing and zany, and fun to watch. What started as little shorts evolved into a wonderful show that I wish was still on the air.
