To say that this movie exceeded my expectations would misleading, because while it did do so, i didn't have high expectations in the first place. Seeing the trailer of this movie last year made many people think that the movie wouldn't be all that great and i was one of them, i thought it strayed too far from the source material.
But seeing the actual movie? I think its alright, watching it in the theaters was really funny at times, especially when the meme parts came up like 'I am steve', 'Chicken jockey', 'Flint and steel', 'The nether'. The people in the theaters laughed and cheered during those moments and i couldn't help but laugh too.
Taking the movie purely by itself though, i think its pretty mid. Storywise its a tried and true format, the characters are pretty one dimensional too. I did like Garrett the garbageman because he was funny but other than that i cant say too much. The children in the movie also have subpar acting. I can't say theres too much of a lesson or anything that will stick. If it weren't for the IP, this movie would flop.
Its an enjoyable experience if you turn off your brain and dont take it seriously, don't expect to be blown away by amazing storytelling. It is a fun experience to watch with friends, even if too just make fun of the movie. Overall, 7/10. Perhaps even 5/10 if it weren't for the memes.

I believe it should be noted that i am a massive Zoroark fan so you might want to take my review with a pinch of salt, but i think its important that people consider the opinion of the fans when measuring a film's success.
Pokémon: Zoroark: Master of Illusions is a fun movie centering on the title character of Zoroark. The film follows Ash and Zoroark on their journey to beat the main villain of the story. Theres appearances made by a few legendaries but the main focus of the story is Zoroark and its pre-evolution of Zorua. Overall its a nice film that has our favorite characters adventuring once more.
Okay, so that was the Pokemon fan in me speaking, let's get brutally honest.
The movie suffers from common issues that other Pokemon movies suffer from. The fact that its not written incredibly well in part due to the fact its made for a younger audience. The villain isn't incredibly interesting, the plot is easy to guess, and overall I get the feeling that if you've watched one Pokemon movie, you've watched all of them. I suppose you can't entirely blame it, the producers definitely knew that the audience who would be watching the movie wouldn't be the sophisticated critic type but instead younger fans, and to that end i think they succeded. If i were a child then this movie would definitely have entertained me, even now as an older person i enjoyed seeing my favorite Pokemon appear on screen.

Pokemon: Detective Piakchu is a fun movie to watch as a Pokemon fan. Seeing my favorite Pokemons appear in live action is great and i loved seeing them. But honestly? That's kind of it. The movie is great in that it gives Pokemon fans a chance to see what Pokemon might look like in real life and all the hijinks that might ensue from that, but in terms of actual storytelling its fairly bland, if you're older than 13 then you can probably have a good guess at what plot points are going to happen next. That's not to say its necessarily bad, after all we have to consider the audience its made for, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't try to exceed it. I think an issue with most Pokemon movies is the fact that they aren't really made for a more mature audience and they rely heavily on the IP. I don't think that just because of the fact that its a Pokemon movie and the connotations of it being a 'kids show' means that the people creating the movie should purely target the child audience, on the contrary i think it should push them to create an even better movie for all ages. The only reason i gave it such a high rating is because of my personal biases due to the fact I love Pokemon. This movie is fun for a Pokemon fan, but not much else.
