As long as you don't compare this movie with HEAT or THE TOWN, it is worth the watch. Not a great film, not a great cast, but enough interesting to justify the viewing. Adrian Brody is not exceptional, as usual, despite his Academy Awards statuette for THE PIANIST in 2002; Brody is like Nicolas Cage, you may find him in any kind of film, any kind. He just does the job. The drama and character study elements are more important here than the pure action sequences. I like this film for what it is. But I don't think that in a bank safe deposit room, you have the reserve bank money amassed on a table, in the middle of the customer's safe deposit boxes...
The peculiarity of this story is that it is very surprising, especially in the end, where you are smashed, you can't foresee such a finale. There are two separate atmospheres in this short film. I also would have imagined Michael Caine as the lead role. The portrait of a common old British man, as there are millions of others, a lonely man, suffering to be despised by his fellow citizens. This portrait is a bit painful to watch, but I repeat, the last minute is a real twist ending. It could easily have been proposed in an ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS series episode. I strongly advise you to watch it.
Produced by Benedict Bogeaus, the future Alan Dwann's - for his last films - producer, this is a true crime film noir that is helped by the already John Payne's performance. Splendid photography, good professional job from the director. Only the ending is a bit predictable, and that's the reason why I won't put this crime movie on the top batch of my favorites. Full of charm and atmosphere, typical of the late forties period, the film also offers us a gallery of rough supporting characters...Destined to gems diggers, moviegoers in search of rare movies. So, if you can get it, don't hesitate. Not one second.
