This movie was running daily on the cabin TVs during a recent cruise I was on. Not only in the original language but also it was showing on four other channels, dubbed into four other languages; shows just how popular it is. It's a likeable comedy, maybe fairly predictable but you can't help but warm to the "teenagers" and their crazy adventures. Teenagers in quotes because Conor Sherry was born in 2000 and was already at university when he made his audition tape. Supporting cast is well chosen and the whole thing is a textbook mix of jeopardy and disaster; but of course it all ends well and Sherry's character "AJ" gets a taste of first love.
Classic Ealing Comedy, beloved by many and certainly worth seeing. The characters are painted with a broad brush and the dark humour is very British. Technically it's accomplished in almost every way except for the sound. It's fairly obvious that most of the sound was done in post production because it has no perspective and a boxy interior acoustic; you'd think that they could have found a less echoey room in which to record the post-synch dialogue. It's especially jarring on the exterior scenes. Perhaps typical of the cost cutting methods of the time. Just because the sound *could* be recorded later does not make it better if it is, as this film demonstrates.
It's said that Jack Hargreaves was the inspiration for "The Fast Show" character Bob Fleming. Certainly the mocked up shed set and the country clothing are there. However, Mr Hargreaves seems not to have a persistent cough. Despite being the main man of Southern Television, his charming little films were shot on a low budget; no live sound for example. But the topics are fascinating. The details of the bygone country crafts make for compelling viewing so grab yourself a cup of cocoa and watch these films while Jack Hargreaves narrates them in voiceover by using a rather woolly sounding microphone. It's a relief when we cut back to the studio and you can tell that you're not losing your hearing after all.
