I set my expectations too high. This is not high art I realize, but it was so silly and ridiculous it even fell below the franchise's low bar.
There was a couple of decent scenes but they were still predictable.
The acting was good enough. The script was 'eh'. I thought the 'legacy' characters were too forced and contributed nothing to this one's story. They were almost bystanders while the new kids had the fun.
It was very meta of course, like all of them in this series. I liked the call outs to other (much better) movies and directors. But it sure got old very quickly. I guess the saying 'Been there, Done that' applies here.
I see there is a sequel to this. Though titled Scream VI, it has many of these reboot characters back.
I'll watch it and maybe with my now even lower expectations, I will like it.

I enjoyed the movie a lot.
The characters were interesting if not terribly original. It was very well acted by everyone from the stars to secondary roles.
The dialogue was somewhat derivative and not exactly compelling. Some of the conversations were sleep inducing. Where some scenes should have been electric considering the stakes involved, the chatter amongst the players held it back.
The story was good but sometimes it lacked clarity. There were too many conflicts between the characters (and really too many characters) and just not enough time to flesh them out.
Despite my kind of negative take so far, I actually enjoyed the movie. I liked all the actors and thought they were perfect for their roles.
And I love a good old shootout even though this last one was over before it really got interesting.
Now comes my wife's take. After it ended, she asked what I thought of it, and I told her I liked it but recounted a couple of the things above that I didn't like about it. When I asked her opinion, she first asked me what I thought of the female characters.
I hesitated and thought back...hmmm...they weren't exactly memorable. Well, that was her take. And she said, not only were they not memorable, they were heavily stereotyped, sexist versions of what men think they are. As in...stupid, slutty, easily manipulated pawns who were almost in the way of the story. They had no effect on the men's actions or the story and the only one that did, was the boys dead mother. Key being - she was dead. All the other female characters? - see above.
She had a point but it still didn't take away from my enjoyment of it. She could not look past that though.
Her last words "Typical Taylor Sheridan movie".
