I really don't understand all the negative feedback about this movie. It's about an English woman who takes her two young daughters to Morocco in a search for the meaning of life. "Julia" is guileless and careless, exposes her children to dangerous situations and people, gets a boyfriend who is a street entertainer and has been in trouble with the law. She wanders here and there, ultimately not really discovering anything at all. The little girls are good actors, and the film is as much about their reaction to this life as it is the mother's vain spiritual quest. The older child just wants to be "normal," and they both try to find a father figure in the boyfriend, who is kind to them, but comes in and out of their lives. I enjoyed all their characters and was interested throughout the film. It is very beautiful to look at and Kate Winslet is gorgeous as always. There is a nude scene in the beginning - I am starting to think she loves them. It is very much a drama, and will probably bore most guys, but I would think most women would enjoy it and appreciate it. Despite the situation, the mother and children really love each other and their interplay is interesting to see.

I have seen this film probably 5 or 6 times, but only lately discovered that it was based on a novel by Theodore Dreiser, based on a true life murder case in 1906.

Basically, it's about a social climber who has gotten a girlfriend pregnant and comes under the charms of a wealthy, beautiful young woman and needs to free himself.

I have always been riveted by Clift, and in this movie he does his best to be the man who is torn between two women.

I really have to hand it Shelley Winters as the woman that is desperate to be married and truly loves the Clift character. Usually I see her in movies where she is dominant and demanding, but in this movie she is weak and desperate. I never regarded her as a sensitive actress, but she does very well in this role, It's amazing to me.

As others have said, Elizabeth Taylor has never looked so good, she absolutely glows in this movie, she has never hooked so beautiful!! An absolute goddess, you really can't get enough of her beauty.

I would recommend this to fans of romance and film-noir. A very involving and tense but enjoyable movie experience.

Reese Witherspoon is my favorite actress under the age of 30 and I tremendously enjoy all her movies. In this one she's a girlie girl with a strong belief in herself and her ability to win a boyfriend she lost back by getting admitted to Harvard, his school, as a law student, because she thinks he wants a "serious" girl.

And she manages against all odds to become that girl, even becoming more than she thought she could ever be. Fantastic supporting cast, especially the gal who is her manicurist and sympathizes with her situation.

Funny, light-hearted, great script - I have known sci-fi and action movie people to even like this great movie. Since I like Reese and love comedy, I will give it 10 out of 10 stars
