At first I couldn't understand what was going on (or what had happed), but went back and watched several times. So many things going on about the human condition: war, capital punishment, environmental destruction, as well as other themes. I am rooting for this one to win the Oscar.

Not sure why all the negative comments. Thought it was beautiful and the bird imagery was fantastic for the storyline.

While attempting to do some studying for my graduate level coursework, I caught two recently aired shows in just a matter of days. I am TOTALLY hooked on this show and get a big teary-eyed when the family comes together at the end of each show. All the actors are class-acts and well trained in their medium. Sally Field is phenom in her antics to get her dating men and reign over the entire family as the matriarch. Having such a grand-sized number of characters, some stories tend to get "pushed" too fast to get points across, while others linger longer then need be. There is always so much going on. I have one small fear that this program may give away "too many family secrets" in the first season and slowly have story lines--that give this show it's quirkiness-die off and have it resort to bad nighttime soap stunts like "who shot JR" or the Dynasty 'cat fights' or THE OC ridiculous and improbable story lines they use in 'The OC' -Eric
