Excellent movie. Good to see Dante has a new project in the works finally. What is Stephen Grant up to these days? Come to think of it, Tim McVeigh is sort of an updated Walt Whitman isn't he? But anyway, I saw the movie at IFFM, enjoyed the hell out of it, talked to Dante for good long time during a fake interview conducted by a fellow film fanatic. Saw the movie repeatedly on IFC, but why no DVD? The only reason I can think of is E&O -- all the Coca-Cola references and showing of the product, probably without the permission of the Coca-Cola Company. Just change the label, Dante, you can do it now digitally, probably on a home computer. You have fans that want to see the movie on DVD and good luck with your Tim McVeigh project.

Don't think the point of the book/movie was that the people mentioned have disappeared off the face of the earth -- just that they have never achieved the critical AND commerical heights they achieved in the '70's. Spielberg and Lucas have survived and flourished, but they never had any intentions of CHANGING Hollywood, their films basically fit within an established Hollywood tradition. They were squares, in other words.

Smart, funny script with interesting original premise of the doctor forced to work for criminals. The movie wanders, though, as there's no real central plotline. Great dialogue, but maybe the subsidiary characters are more interesting than the main characters. Script is dramatic/comedic; movie is played down, but the choice to do so seems to have robbed the movie of much-needed juice. The stakes don't seem to be too high for any character. Direction is competent, but doesn't match the script. Hutton is scary, but doesn't have much to do except act scary. Duchovny is fine, but I think he was cast mostly for his X-Files fame at the time. He's not exactly the most charismatic lead actor.
