Cube reported that Ealy was displeased with the new direction the screenwriters were taking the film, and was disgusted by the dialogue and additional characters. Ealy allegedly said that this the new film was not the Barbershop (2002) he knew, and it tarnished the image and meaning of the original two films. Common was cast as an all new character and love interest for Terri, and the Ricky Nash character was written out of the final draft of the screenplay.

Elizabeth Dozier, who plays Principal Paula Walker in the film, was actually the real life former principal of Chicago's Fenger High School. She and her high school had previously been featured in the documentary miniseries Chicagoland (2014).
