After moving away three years before the film and causing severe damage to their friendship, Danielle returns to her hometown, seeking answers for a medical mystery she is experiencing. She runs into Paige, her former best friend, who is still angry about their past. After an intense exchange, they slowly begin to open up, revealing things that will test how strong their bond truly is.

PREFILM BUT CENTRAL TO THE PLOT: Danielle, a blonde in her early twenties, moves back to her home city for better medical care for her seizures. Paige, a terminal brunette her age, is also undergoing treatment at the same hospital. Before the film, the two friends had a falling out when Danielle moved away with her family to Cowley, a countryside village. Paige resented the move, while Danielle felt unfairly blamed for a choice beyond her control. Their friendship ended on a sour note after a heated argument.

The film opens with Danielle in the hospital. While awaiting test results, Paige notices Danielle in a hospital room, and charges in, still bitter over their friendship's bitter end when Danielle moved away. A brief but intense argument ensues, with Paige demanding to know why Danielle has returned, accidentally letting slip that she is seeking treatment. Danielle latches onto the slip and demands to know what Paige is talking about. Paige confesses begrudgingly, and Danielle is upset that Paige didn't tell her, but Paige counters that Danielle was the one who left.

The next interaction is a phone call as Danielle heads to the hospital for more tests. They briefly banter. Later, when they meet again, Paige looks noticeably worse. They joke about Danielle's new neighbourhood, leading to Danielle revealing it's near where they used to steal and sell as kids. Paige defensively questions how Danielle can afford to live there, prompting Danielle to admit her family used her late grandfather's inheritance. Taking the sombre moment, Paige finally bares all to Danielle about how she felt when Danielle was cruel. Danielle realises she was wrong to belittle Paige as "not classy enough" for Cowley, despite their shared upbringing. After Danielle apologises, Paige begins to warm up, and they slip into their old playful dynamic.

Before anyone can dwell on it, Danielle leaves and bids Paige farewell.

When Danielle invites Paige to Sunday dinner, Paige initially refuses after some banter, explaining she can't eat solid foods before her surgery. Though Paige knows she won't survive the operation, or if she's lucky, survive the surgery, but pass shortly after, she hides it from Danielle and promises to join her and her family for dinner when she can.

A few days later, Danielle bakes an apple pie for Paige, unable to visit her since the surgery. Rosa, her older sister, knows that Danielle has had to rapidly come to terms with Paige's upcoming demise, despite having, essentially, only just gotten her back. Danielle refuses to completely open up to Rosa, through denial or plain refusal, which isn't clear.

Danielle brings the pie to Paige in the hospital, only to find her in a fragile state- she's going to die that day. The surgery helped, but it weakened her too much. Danielle desperately tries to find a way to help, but Paige just wants her company in her final moments. Devastated, Danielle agrees, and they share the pie together.
