All right

First and foremost, not boring. The movie holds your interest from start to finish, and I for one find that the most important quality a film can have. I don't care how great a concept or idea is, if its deliverance has me bored while trying to get through it.

On the other hand, there's not a whole lot in this story, and certainly not much new. It's about a guy who never really found his place, but keeps trying. That's about it, so don't expect some huge mysteries, big revelations, gripping action scenes, haunting thoughts etc.

It is still interesting though, well made, well acted, so it's worth watching.

A little footnote: I personally loathe rodeos, and while stories involving rodeo people tend to be interesting, the sport itself feels vile to me. Watching human bodies flailing around violently on a bucking animal is almost physically painful to me. So if you're like me, expect lots of scenes showcasing slow motion bronc riding, and get ready to look away a lot.

Nearly broke me

This film left me thinking more about it when it was over. I guess my score is a bit harsh. I'm sticking with it though because it made me feel desperate & futile whist I was watching it and reminds me of troubles I have with my own children. Maybe that's the point of filming such stories. There are some predictable story lines, some direction you might not expect. Yes, I guess this is a modern day Western. I love the locations and the cinematography - go on, it's worth a watch. No spoilers here but it could have ended in a number of ways. I pondered why this had scored so highly on the Prime reviews and concluded it's all very credible, could happen and the relationships are well worked through.

Slow ... but ....

We liked this movie. We liked the characters. We liked the actors. We love Rodeo and and the cinematography was great. All That said ... it just drug.

Perhaps it was the directing we don't know. We did feel the emotions, even cried, and loved Ali for True. The ending suggests his "growing up" through the experience... but didn't sell it. Some how I really wanted it to be so good. But, I'd have to recommend it with caveats.

Boring, 20 minutes I turned it off

Whatever they are trying to do with this movie after 20 minutes I gave up. It was like watching a turtle and a snail in a slow motion demolition derby. In the snow, in a rodeo, in a dirt lot, in a house, what or where are you trying to do? The best part of this movie is off my tv screen. Nothing made sense.

Quiet, impactful modern western

The story is simple, knowing its limits and never exceeding them. The actors are all great, the music is great, the scenery excellent. For a modern western, it fares much better than anything else I have watched.

Also, Russell proves himself to have calibre as an actor, knowing how to use his physique and looks, and even his eyes work perfectly to express emotion and thinking without having to overdo it. The female lead was great, as was the brother. The big stars of the film, Quaid and McDonald were fine, but nothing too much. What stands out though, even more than the beautiful scenery, is the script. A good, honest story. Will be looking for this director's next film.

A different type of love story

I feel like it was a typical type of addict story. But made into a western sort of. Black sheep of the family trying to redeem himself in his father's eyes. Not quite measuring up to his potential. Finds the girl falls in love, messes it up. Is at the end of his pitiful rope, just when you thought he would give up, bounce back, get your life right type of story. Good acting though, wyatt Russell looks and sounds like his father Kurt, but I can say for me one and done type of movie.

Nope

Maybe it's wonderful. But I couldn't get past the first 10 minutes. I thought there was an actor pretending, unconvincingly, to be Matthew McConaughey. That was the only dialogue I heard. Never mind the unrealistic idea that you are not prepared for cold a@@ weather. But what sealed it for me was the "rodeo", "bareback riding", EMOJI CHAPS?! Nope. Sorry.

Like I said. It might be an amazing movie but if I'm that out in 10 minutes?????

Horrible movie

The movie is hard to follow. The plot is still unknown to me. Dennis Quaid's role was so small and irrelevant i feel like he was used only to draw people's interest.

Pass on this movie unless you're into complicated movies with so many flashbacks you can't tell who is who. I gave one star because i was glad when it was over.

A Grounded Western

This film is a grounded and realistic portrayal of a Rodeo athlete but still maintains that artistic and cinematic magic. This film proves to be both emotionally provoking as well as inspiring!

Furthermore this film honors the American culture of rodeo and ranching as well as free thinking and art. It brings back an older generation film feeling of telling a deep and intimate story that will resonate with anyone but it is set against a modern backdrop. It also indicates to the audience how alive and well western culture still is.

I truly believe this is an engaging must see film for anyone and everyone!

Riding the Storm: A Lone Cowboy's Reckoning

Carlyle Eubank's "Broke" centers on True Brandywine (Wyatt Russell), a bareback bronc rider grappling with the twilight of his rodeo career. The film immediately immerses the viewer in True's solitary struggle against a sudden and brutal spring blizzard. Trapped by the unforgiving elements, True must confront not only the immediate threats to his physical well-being but also the underlying circumstances that have led him to this precarious and isolated existence. The narrative subtly suggests a deeper story of past choices and present consequences, hinting at an internal reckoning that unfolds alongside his desperate fight for survival.

Wyatt Russell delivers a compellingly physical and emotionally raw performance as True. He embodies the weathered resilience of a seasoned rodeo athlete pushed to his absolute limits by the harsh environment. His portrayal captures both the outward grit required to battle the storm and the inward vulnerability of a man facing his own mortality and regrets. While Dennis Quaid's presence adds a layer of seasoned gravitas to the film, the core of the narrative rests firmly on Russell's ability to convey the protagonist's isolation and his internal battle for survival and self-reflection.

Comparing Russell's acting style to the veteran Dennis Quaid reveals distinct approaches. Quaid often brings a certain confident energy and seasoned presence to his roles. Russell, particularly in this isolated survival scenario, leans into a more grounded and emotionally exposed portrayal, allowing the audience to witness the character's internal struggle and physical deterioration.

Considering Wyatt Russell's work in relation to his father, Kurt Russell, reveals both shared intensity and individual nuance. While Kurt often imbues his characters with a charismatic and sometimes larger-than-life quality, Wyatt frequently opts for a more introspective and emotionally vulnerable approach. In "Broke," this translates to a portrayal of True that emphasizes his quiet resilience and the internal battle he wages alongside the external one. This nuanced depiction of a man confronting his past while fighting for his life showcases Wyatt's distinct talent for conveying complex emotions through subtle yet powerful means.

Ultimately, "Broke" is a stark and intense character study set against the unforgiving backdrop of a natural disaster. Anchored by a compelling performance from Wyatt Russell, the film delves into themes of survival, resilience, and the arduous process of self-confrontation. It promises to be a raw and emotionally resonant cinematic experience, focusing on one man's desperate fight against the elements and the internal reckoning that accompanies such extreme isolation.

8 Seconds of Glory..........

Filmed in Anaconda, Deer Lodge, Butte, Drummond & Three Forks Montana it features some beautiful scenery. I noticed that Wyatt Russell and Vince Vaughan co-produced the movie. I think that even though it is classified as a Contemporary Western (meaning it is set in current times and not the 1800's) it could be classified as a Romance. The relationship between True and Ali is pretty central to the story and figures pretty prominently in True's thinking as he battles for survival and reflects on his past. Wyatt Russell I am not familiar with so I did a little research on him. He is the son of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. I really liked him in this and will look out for him in future movies. He did star in Thunderbolts which I have not seen yet, so I'll add that to the list. Dennis Quaid was good as always, nice to see him again, as well as Tom Skerritt who is 91 years old by the way and still working! Go Tom! Auden Thornton is also new to me, she has been acting in a lot of TV series and a couple of movies I have not seen. I really liked her in this as Ali, she might be one of my new favorites.

I loved this movie.... I loved the story, the characters, the scenery, the drama between True and his father, the romance and chemistry between True and Ali, True's battle to find himself amidst all the things life does to shake your tree. It is a contemporary Western in that it is a modern day Cowboy in the rodeo business, but the story, the relationship themes and the search and struggle of self are universal themes that could apply to any story and backdrop. Yes, this is a good one.......

A Stunningly Beautiful Movie!

'Broke' is a visually beautiful movie, featuring a masterclass in acting, by EVERY actor/actress within it!

There is not a wasted scene, throughout, that does not capture the raw emotions of everyone's lives.

The film flips between the main character, named True, who is in survival mode from the opening scene, and his 'before' life, as a bronco rider!

Those who have the patience to know the viewer will find out how the two connect, will not be disappointed!

Throughout this brilliant movie is a wonderful soundtrack!

If I could rate this movie HIGHER than '10', I certainly would!

Go see!!!

Deep and Meaningful

I think I will need to watch this movie again to unpack everything. Really good film for anyone to enjoy, fans of Westerns and also anyone who wants to watch something great. On its surface it is a beautiful movie about a cowboy struggling to find his new purpose in life, but there is so much more to it. There are multiple timelines and I wont spoil anything but I was very invested. I really enjoyed watching, the acting was top notch and every moment beautiful. The soundtrack was unbelievably good. I loved the ending and think it has such a good message about overcoming obstacles. I think this is Carlyle Eubank's directing debut - unreal! I look forward to seeing more from this director and will be looking for the next thing from him.

Broke is a Stunning Movie!

Broke is a stunning movie!

Carlyle Eubank's writing is enthralling and tells the story of True Brandywine seeking answers to what is next in his life as the story unfolds, from bareback bronc riding, to tension filled scenes with his dad, and True's self-reflection of his life.

Directing debut for Carlyle Eubank. Wow! Carlyle created a world that is believable and kept me in my seat to see what was happening next.

The story is gripping, maintaining an underlying tension throughout, the acting is raw, and haunting. Which draws you into the story and kept my interest.

Cinematography is incredible, the snow scenes are breathtaking, the summer scenes are spectacular, and the rodeo scenes are especially real.

Editing blends the storyline back and forth seamlessly.

Congratulations Wyatt Russell for his impressive role depiction of True Brandywine. Additionally, Dennis Quaid's impressive role for George Brandywine as the father.

Broke Cut Deep: America's Pain in Every Frame

Wow, Broke got under my skin. Wyatt Russell's True, a rodeo rider crumbling under pain and pills, felt like he was speaking my language. His spiral into illegal meds to dull the ache, hit hard - too many of us know someone caught in that trap, or maybe we've been there, numbing life's hurts. It's a story that screams America today, where so many battle pain, physical or not, and reach for quick fixes. The way the film flips through True's life, from rodeo highs to hospital lows, felt like my own moments of looking back, wondering where I went wrong. The Montana snow and gritty country songs wrapped it all in a vibe that's pure heartland, raw and real. Dennis Quaid's turn as True's dad, full of tough love and regret, dug up my own family fights we don't talk about. Broke nails that universal struggle - pushing through pain, chasing dreams, and picking up the pieces. It left me gutted but somehow lighter.

Solid movie

Acting was great, story was interesting and held my attention for the whole movie. I wasnt really looking for drama but it wound up being worth it in the end. This story has a western feel with the music and scenery showcasing what could be real life without any underlying messaging that would not have fit the characters like so many movies try to do today. So many movies lose me when something or someone is introduced because the writers or directors want to make a social statement that doesn't fit the storyline. This movie doesn't have any of that and is just pure entertainment with a stellar performance by all the main characters. Seems like my boy Danger Dave may have been an uncredited rodeo clown in this movie.

An emotionally resonant story about Identity, Legacy, and Survival

Wyatt Russell and Dennis Quaid give a top notch relationship through a rugged, restrained intensity as an aging and faded rodeo rider and emotionally distant father, adding depth to their fraught dynamic. It could be argued as a played out stereotype, but I think it still added to the character background in a meaningful manner. Director Carlyle Eubank's debut is visually striking and thematically rich, with a haunting score and authentic atmosphere. Though the pacing lingers at times, the film's raw honesty and poetic structure make it a standout. A must-watch for fans of character-driven dramas.

A western for people who love film

Yeah, it's a western (kind of) and has some of the most beautiful cinematography of rodeo riding ever shot, and yeah, the acting is top-notch, particularly Wyatt Russell, who never hits a false note and makes his case as one of the best up-and-coming young actors. But the real surprise of this film is how excellent the filmmaking is, from the imagery to the editing to the sound design. The main story is told via three intersecting timelines, an interesting structure it pulls off without ever seeming gimmicky, and the script's spare and unrelenting honesty keeps it from ever dipping into sentimentality. This movie draws you in like a vortex and then spits you out panting on the ground, wanting to ride it again.

Western Worth Watching

Really enjoyed this film. The storyline was interesting and truly emotionally moving. The cinematography was great as well. Locations and sets were beautiful to the eye and they painted the perfect picture which coincided with the storyline. The actors were cast well and the director did an excellent job portraying this story through film. Really hope to see more things come from Eubank with both his writing and his directing. Rodeo/western life is romanticized so much nowadays that it's refreshing to see a hard life true story about a cowboy that has hit so many roadblocks in life, but continues to persevere. Highly recommend to others -- enjoy!

Great film, great story. Worth the watch!

Highly recommend this film. I truly enjoyed the story. It's honest without being preachy, which is rare these days. I appreciated how this shows the truly human side of being broken in many ways. No money messes with your head and your relationships. It creates feelings of true depression, true sadness, and true loss. I also understood the feelings of saving face even when things are falling apart in your everyday life.

Eubank doesn't try to fix everything with a neat bow at the end, which I respect. Real life is messier than that and art needs to reflect real life, even when it isn't fun and beautiful.

Good Western

Good movie. Havent seen a good western in a long time. I hadn't heard of it till I saw Charley Crockett post. Not sure why it didn't go to theaters, its really good especially if you like Westerns its worth a watch. Great soundtrack and glad to see Charley pop up. The story is really good and a real depiction of rodeo life with beautiful shots.

The lead, Wyatt Russell is awesome. He is so strong as an actor. I'd seen him in Lodge 49 and Overlord but was really impressed with his performance here. He was very natural and really fit the part. Cool he's carrying on the legacy of westerns after his dad, Kurt!

Captivating story and visually stunning

This movie was so beautifully done and so true to that western lifestyle- down to the terms that they used and the clothing they wore. Unlike the usual gun-sling drama that comes with modern westerns, this story brought to light the relationship between a person and their passion, a father and son and a man struggling with his own demons. The opening scene was killer and the suspense and mystery really gave it an edge.

The soundtrack was top-notch- downloaded Charlie Crockett songs afterwards. It is so reminiscent of early Hank Williams music.

Wyatt Russell did an excellent job, as did Dennis Quaid!!! 10/10 would recommend!
