Anthony Jeselink is so freaking hilarious. He does what he describes as Gallow comedy. He explains up front that Gallow comedy is a form of comedy where you take Subject matter that is horrifying to the point you want to cry about it, and instead make jokes with it. He does this brilliantly. He takes on every sensitive subject he can squeeze within the allotted time. His delivery method is somewhat deadpan, like Stephen Wright, but way more rude than Stephen Wright ever considered. The Netflix special is touted as being geared towards celebrating his 20 years of comedy. Twenty years? How have I missed this guy? He's brilliant.

As Norm said Jeselnik is one of the greats. He is his own and there is no one like him. But... If you know his material it doesn't really evolve or move. This time he told some stories from his own life which is rather unusual for him but the rest stays in the same structure based mostly on shock value and surprise. Many of the jokes were losing that just because it is his base line and you know where it is going. When you take look at Louis CK for example and look at his 90s stand up and then some more current specials it is such a difference in style and material it seems almost like a different comedian. For me Jeselnik needs to move a bit otherwise this might get old one day. But overall good stuff.
My ratings for his previous stand ups :
Caligula : 9,1/10
Thoughts and Prayers : 8,6/10.
Fire in the Maternity Ward : 7,8/10.
Jeselnik is one of my favorite stand up comedians, as it shows from my ratings. I think he's brilliant and hilarious, although i admit his shows are not for everyone. Too macabre and dark and twisted. So, if you are not aware of his particular style of humor, and you like your stand up a bit sanitized and conventional, attention : He doesn't fool around. He's dark and nihilistic as it can get.
This is my least favorite stand up of his. Truth be told, his shows are getting gradually less good. But they're still good, actually, very good. More than 50% of his jokes here are hilarious, i laughed hard and had a good time, overall. Still, BONES AND ALL is better than the average stand up tv show. It should have been longer, the jokes are not too many and the last 10-15 minutes are not as funny as the previous ones. But, he still got it.

If you are offended, you don't get it, and he's not for you and that is ok! My dad, for example, can be a tough customer when it comes to stand up and his tolerance to irreverent jokes varies. However, Anthony grew on him as he learned to appreciate the dark and unexpectedly witty humor he brings to the table. The husband and I have been fans for all 20 years and are here for the rest to come. To put it simply, "we celebrate the guy's entire catalogue." I'm a stand up snob so I get bored easily with comics who lack creativity, leaning on self-deprecation, or profanity for its own sake. I legit laughed the whole time, but his brand of comedy is made for people like me. Remember this is Anthony Jeselnik the comedian, not the person. I've seen interviews where he explains/reminds folks that these are jokes. He makes light of the unending BS in this world in a way that gives you permission to laugh, but it doesn't make you a bad person. Nor does that qualify him as such. Loved the special, can't wait for the next one!
Disclaimer - I do NOT know Anthony Jeselnik. No one gave me anything to write this. I wish both were true.. he is hot and I have bills.

Anthony Jeselnik is one of my favorite comics, and this is among his best works. Jeselnik is a master at misdirection, and he always finds new and unexpected ways to hit the punchline. You can tell a lot of time and energy went into this special, while some comics will just throw anything up on Netflix just for a payday. However, here, the jokes were all well done, and everything fit perfectly-also, props to Anthony for being his own person and not part of the Rogan crew. If anything, the points where you could tell he was making fun of other comedians were some of the best moments. All in all, it was a great special that I'm excited to rewatch.
Haha jk Jeselnek, I know you paid someone to write that (winky face) - nah but for real, I apologize in advance, cause I touted your special before I had even seen it and.. yaaa - don't get me wrong, it's funny albeit a tad predictable and monotonous but that's owing to the deadpan, deliberate delivery - however the spec is less than 45 min long and let's be fair, alot of that time is eaten up with his slow paced slow talking with alot of pregnant pauses (ooops I said pregnant, I meant trans pauses). So ultimately I'm giving it a seven cause I did laugh and I did enjoy myself but 18 months? That's a lengthy time to perfect this particular 45m set - considering his sparse heretofore specials over the 20 years of entertaining.
For instance, the person who posted a review and said Anthony's comedy was "too political." Definitely not for that guy. Because that guy doesn't know that for something to be "political," it actually needs to reference politicians or you know....politics. Poking fun at transphobic people, Joe Rogan and conspiracy theorists doesn't make something political. They are easy targets outside of politics.
I think Anthony is a genius at joke structure and character creation - the irony and depth. Even when I know the whole point is misdirection, I'm still often surprised with where he goes. He's trying to be thought-provoking. I can see by the reviews, he's been successful.

Guys found his rhythm. It's absolutely brilliant and will make you laugh. Well worth the watch, and you'll want to watch it again. Cannot recommend it enough. Guys one of the greats. He continues to improve, his delivery has gotten better. Not for those who cannot take a joke. It is unapologetic, irreverent, clever, and well crafted. You'll never be able to guess where he's going witch each joke. Don't mistake his persona he's crafted as him being overconfident or full of himself, again it's a persona he's crafted for himself, it is an act. He says what he should and doesn't apologize for it. A refreshing stand up comedy special that reminds us free speech does still exist and it's well worth the watch. If you're already a fan of him this is an absolute must watch. You will not be disappointed in the least. Very well done and the best comedy special I've seen in a long, long time. If you're looking for a comedian who doesn't care about what others say a comedian can say or cannot say, this is for you.

Anthony has some heavy-duty comedic chops! This act is as real as it gets. He set the tone with his "closer" opener, kept the sticky tissue hilarious, and delivered the punches perfectly. He is unapologetically genuine, and his intelligence comes through as he lets his audience in on just enough bites of information to bake their own pie. He is one of the best I've seen.
For me, stand-up is a way to digest unsavory parts of the human condition in a palatable and sometimes decadent manner. Gallows humor hits all the right sweet spots! It is refreshing, especially after the boring, lazy acts of gimmicky comics like Gervais, Ellen, Burr, Wong, Chapelle, Rogan, etc., trying so hard to be funny but staying in the superficial layer of most issues. They can't seem to get over themselves. In contrast, Anthony got down and dirty about the subjects and not himself. He knows where the nerves are and hits them in the best, most uncomfortably delightful way. I finished this stand-up special with a feeling of solidarity and not the usual bitterness that has become the norm.
As another reviewer mentioned, I wish I'd found him earlier. He might have made the last two decades a lot sweeter. I look forward to discovering more of his work.

Anthony Jeselnik is one of my favorite comedians and I was really looking forward to this special, I'm a big fan of his dark sense of humor. Because of that, it's hard for me to say that this special is really mediocre. There were a few clever jokes, but they weren't that funny. The only one that cracked me up was the joke about Mike Tyson from the roast, and that's it. The other stuff was little boring and for me this seemed like one of his weaker specials, It's like he didn't even try.
Maybe for someone watching him for the first time, it was interesting, but for me, almost all the jokes were predictable.

It's efficient. He shows you the equation and you solve for x. I listened to this while playing Steam. Perfect audio companion. If you see any of his interviews, you know he loves a good album. Pacing is steady and you'll finish before an hour. He does a great job of limiting the scope of his face, he's not saturated in the podcast world where it's just a fire hose of gotcha's and a-ha's. It's the knife in the stomach and you watched it from across the room and let it happen anyways. The blood's warm. Yeah, he does mention the anniversary a few times, I think he really wants to flex the resume, and also that he's not attached to a posse, but I let it slide. There aren't any wasted moments.

51 minute standup (did they have to cut nine minutes? Why wasn't it sixty minutes?) recorded in milwaukee. He's never been afraid to get down and dirty, and cross the line a bit, but he always comes back from the dark side for the punch line! He even talks about telling dark jokes. Toxic masculinity. Why he doesn't like it when people send pics of their baby, and how to put a stop to it! Responding to complaints from the trans community over his jokes. Dealing with people who abuse comfort dogs. Priest jokes. Much talk about flying and travel. Divorce. Kanye west. Doing a show with norm macdonald. It's a funny 51 minutes! Directed by bill benz. Good stuff! Showing on the netflix.
Taking on "cancel culture" was a miss. He must be the only one thinking that was a brave move. Maybe if this was like 6 years ago, it would have been relevant, but it's been years since people like shane gillis and tony hinchcliffe were "cancelled" only to catapult to fame. This is a topic that has been discussed ad nauseam.
No one has given a crap about cancel culture for a long while now.
Most of his dark humor here was like kids versions of his old jokes. Predictable, not that interesting. His "taking on chapelle" in regards to the trans topic didn't even make any sense, apparently the actual content and meaning behind dave's joke about the subject went way over his head.
I've always liked anthony but i think unfortunately the cocky smug persona has gotten to his head a little bit, thinking he's a better comedian than he is.
It's ok i'm sure he'll do better next time but this was disappointing. Honestly this felt more like a special you could watch with the family lol.

This was his worst special by far. Watching an old man try and repeat middle school jokes is not entertaining. Isn't he supposed to be good at this? Multiple jokes that were terribly delivered. His set up misdirection is played out and obvious he sets are formulaic. His oh so edgy persona doesn't work anymore. There were no long set big laugh type jokes. No huge punchlines at all. Very disappointed in what comedy has became and was hopefully he would deliver a crushing restart to the system. He did not. Weak jokes, weird looking comic, odd delivery. He joins the ever growing list of elder statesmen of comedy who should preserve their past accomplishments by fading away.

I am usually a big fan of Anthony Jeselnik. I find his kind of misdirection jokes usually very funny, because even when you know that he is misdirecting you, most of the time the punchline is coming from an unexpected direction. I also really liked that all the jokes involved his family and friends circle. No jokes at the expense of other groups, very refreshing.
Unfortunately "Bones and All" is only partially like that. It starts with a joke about a politically dividing issue and then continues with that for a while. There are some of his classical "friends-and-family-themed" jokes, but overall the mix is different.
I had three main problems with the show, which is a stark departure from all previous shows: * The jokes about political topics were not that great and I would argue that they won't age very well.
* I hate to say it, but the jokes were not that great. Many times I could see the misdirect and the punchline from a mile away.
* As a result, and I hate so say that even more, I was bored by the show. I laughed maybe 3 times, 1 of them whole heartedly, but still I was wondering quite quickly, if I really should finish the show. I did, but I was not redeemed by it, just more bored.
I may be a bit over-interpreting, but his chosen persona in the show was different too. It somehow felt more muted and especially when looking into his eyes, less confident. As a result the delivery was flatter.
In summary, other than the other Netflix-Specials and videos on social media, "Bones and All" most likely will not be revisited by yours truly.

I was keen on watching this as Anthony Jelelnik is one of my favorite comics that's out there today. I love dark humor and Jeselnik specialty is dark humor. I think Jeselnik is way more funny than popular comics out there in the past 5-10 years.
However, this special didn't really make me laugh much. I felt it was way too predictable. There were a few that weren't predictable, but overall the special was meh. I feel like he hasn't evolved too much with his comedy. The special was about 40-45 minutes long, but it's actually about 20 minutes long. Jeselnik's delivery is what made it longer. It was kind of a slog with 3-4 funny jokes and the rest being unfunny.
