A looked forward to watching Deck the Walls mostly due to the cast. The house flipping/renovation Holiday Hallmark film is not a novel concept, but I really like both Ashley Greene and Wes Brown. I was impressed with the remainder of the cast leads as well. However, as others mentioned, the motivation behind the character's emotions towards one another took too long to be revealed, and while I do appreciate line upon line development, it was hard to get a grasp on, especially for a Hallmark movie. It would have been very easy to drop that Rose had a crush on Brysen growing up in the initial conversation with Sal. Even still, I didn't understand why she had such animosity towards him when he didn't even know. It would have been one thing if there was a conflict in their history, but nothing. He didn't know, he was with his high school sweetheart, and she kept it hidden. I also felt that the development between Sal and Jake was a little forced. I liked how the backstory unfolded but something just wasn't there. I also felt this featured the most intentional product placements I've seen in Hallmark movies before. Subtle placement is fine, but this was a bit over the top and I feel took a bit away from the film. I love Nutella though, and those cookies looked fire! I think if you are already fans of Ashley Greene, Wes Brown, or Danny Pellegrino, you will enjoy this just fine. It's a good movie to have on while baking cookies- far from the worst one of the season, but is far from an instant classic. It otherwise fits the typical rom-com story arc- here's to a Christmas wish that future lead characters won't be so weakened by odd insecurities or misunderstandings/miscommunication.
The problem with "Deck the Walls" is the problem with most rom-coms, a lousy script. It starts out funny and Wes Brown is really good with light fun roles, but Ashley Greens's character got bogged down in the past and nostalgia. That ruined the whole light nature of the film.
A high school principal getting in effect a "Habitat for Humanity" home, just didn't work for me. It just didn't pass the smell test so, the movie got another black mark. Danny Pellegrino seemed an odd casting choice, don't know what the producers had in mind.
It could have been a much more interesting movie by adding more humor and less of the past and nostalgia.

I have watched and reviewed literally hundreds of Hallmark-like Christmas movies. Did I somehow miss it, or this year are the premises getting even more impossibly ridiculous? A charity house flip where the mayor takes away all the remaining money??? So how did they get anything more done? Rose keeps coming back with new stuff. Is it all donated? If this isn't enough fun, Rose and Brysen have a negative history that isn't totally revealed all at once. And the lead contractor, Sal, has a negative history with reporter assigned for PR. And the mayor told Sal it was a print reporter, but he is filming for TV including a live finale. Like I said, impossibly ridiculous and somewhat derivative.
Is this a rom/com because almost all of the first third or more of the movie has very little positive time with Rose and Brysen together. Overall, I think the relationship development between these two was rushed. There is a second romance between Sal and Jake.
The story seems a little slow probably because so much of it is reliving backstory. I think all the backstory is an attempt to pull heartstrings as everything develops, but I just couldn't get into it because the writers kept throwing obstacles at the project. There are several musical interludes. Filler? Despite the project being such a rush there is still time for parlor games, karaoke, and ice skating.
The acting is OK, the dialogue has some good moments but also ones that are bland.
BTW my pet peeve is text messages that are too small to read. There is one just before the climax. I paused and got right next to the TV and still couldn't read it. I still don't know if it contributed to the important moment.

Can start off by saying was hard telling who sponsored this movie..
At least could of made it subtle felt like one long commercial, for HomeGoods & Nutella. Lol.
The storyline was a clichéd topic, also for all the build-up we never get a satisfying payoff.. Why didn't we get a home tour? Did the daughter like her new room, etc.
Instead it was filled with a lackluster,no chemistry story & subpar acting by everyone.
I loved Ashley in previous Hallmark productions but here she seemed tired, gaunt & almost like she was bored to be part of this movie.
Not worth seeing,again.. Hallmark needs to remember, quality over quantity.

Not the best Hallmark movie ever made but also far from the worst. I like Wes Brown and I like Ashley Greene; they always elevate these productions with their presence and their chemistry was on point.
"Deck the Walls" rolls out the old 'professional returns to their home town for the first time in years' and it does so with a charity aspect.
Of course, there was the standard moment of miscommunication moment two thirds of the way into the movie, but that - of course, and as is expected - was resolved neatly before a heart-warming ending.
I'm sure some people will be upset by the secondary couple being gay, but I wasn't. Their storyline added something to the movie, rather than them being there just for diversity.
Solid Hallmark Christmas fun.

It was such a terribly written movie, no plot whatsoever, all over the place, not sure how the script passed the producers, but it is childish and chaotic.
The two main leads were OK, and the actress that played the aunt is wonderful, also the TV reporter, but I just could not focus well on the story because the actor that plays the brother was so atrocious, he was lost and beyond bad in literally every scene, how did he even pass the audition, he is not even high school drama level good, he is just terrible. In most of the scenes he did not even know where to look or how to move within the scene, absolute amateur. Truly hope we will not be seeing him again in any of the Hallmark movies, this is obviously not a career for him.
I did like the costumes in the film and the set decor was nice as well.

I've been an intermittent listener of Danny's podcast for years, so I was thrilled to see his script come to life. His deep love of pop culture and romcom lore really shines through in this film. I've watched several holiday movies this Thanksgiving week, and I'd rank this one just behind Lindsay Lohan's charming lil comeback. It's a cute, simple, and sweet story that doesn't try too hard, making it perfect for the season. The cast delivers likable performances, and the festive setting hits all the right notes for a cozy holiday vibe. It's great as background TV to tune in and out of while cooking, decorating, or wrapping gifts, but it also has enough heart to keep you engaged if you sit down and watch it all the way through. If you're looking for a feel-good holiday movie that's warm and easy to enjoy, this is definitely one to add to your list.
I sat down to watch the 2024 Hallmark Christmas movie "Deck the Walls" as part of my 2024 December Christmas Movie Marathon. Sure, I had never heard about this movie prior to watching it, but I figured with it being a Hallmark movie, then it couldn't be all bad. Sure, it might be super sappy, as Hallmark movies tend to be, but I still opted to give director Jake Van Wagoner's 2024 movie a fair chance.
Yeah, I didn't really have the biggest of expectations to the movie, so I suppose that the writer Tracy Andreen and Danny Pellegrino had every opportunity to bedazzle and entertain me.
However, I found the narrative in the movie to be rather mundane. It wasn't a particularly entertaining movie. Sure, it was watchable, but the movie was just lacking that particular Christmas spark that many of these sappy movies usually have. It was a pretty generic storyline, truth be told, and not a particularly great one at that.
Of the entire cast ensemble I was only familiar with Wes Brown and Adam Johnson. While the acting performances in the movie were fairly good in general, I have to say that I just didn't particularly like leading actress Ashley Greene, as she lacked charisma and on-screen sparkle to make it a believable sappy Christmas movie.
While I did make it through the entire 84 minutes that the movie ran for, I was only mildly entertained. I can honestly say that I am not returning to watch this movie a second time. And if you enjoy sappy Christmas movies, let me just say that there are indeed far better and more enjoyable movies out there.
My rating of "Deck the Walls" lands on a three out of ten stars.

I loved this...I'm a lifelong hallmark fan and this was one of my favorites to date. It covered all the happy bases and the writing was sharp and so funny! Much more than I normally expect! Loved Sal and all the characters... the subtle jokes and real chemistry between the mains made it believable and all that more enjoyable. This really took the hallmark formula up a notch. I can't wait for more from Danny Pellegrino please- I can't believe he wrote this and starred in it as well.
Deck the Walls is a cozy enjoyable watch and the perfect way to kick off the holiday season. Romance, family traditions, dry humor and more.

Not the most original script but the actors give their best. It's a good background movie with some interesting scenes. Wes Brown always gives a good performance and didn't disappoint here. He had good chemistry with Ashley Greene. The rest of the cast was very good also. Did anyone else think Carolyn Hennesy (Aunt Gigi) looked a lot like Sharon Osbourne? Maybe it was just the hair color and style.
I see Danny Pellegrino (Sal) was also one of the writers. I was not familiar with him or his work but now I will check out his podcast.
I need fifty-four more characters. Not sure why because I always see much shorter reviews. There, done.

This movie feels like a warm hug, loved it so much. The cast was awesome and had such great chemistry too! Long time listener of Danny Pellegrino's hilarious podcast, and I just knew any movie he wrote and starred in would be incredible and it really was. As far as Hallmark movies go, this one is one of the best and feels like a classic rom com a la How to Lose a Guy in 10 days. I found myself smiling constantly because it was just that cute, and even laughed out loud a few times. Glad I recorded it so I can watch it again this holiday season! You can't go wrong with this one! Check it out even if you aren't a huge Christmas movie person, you'll love it.

I almost dnf'd this in the first 10 minutes, but I persisted and I can't say I am happy about that...with the exception of getting to see Carolyn Hennesy as Aunt Gigi. This film starts as a hot mess. The dialogue is awkward, the meeting between characters is awkward, there are lots of sad themes liking bullying, divorce, poverty, death, coping techniques, loss of family home to fire, etc. For me this added a lot of negatives to what should be a light Hallmark holiday film, add in that this had advertising imbedded in it for both HomeGoods and Nutella and it rapidly moved into a film I not only can't recommend, but don't want to watch. (Not that I have anything against either HomeGoods or Nutella, but we are already watching too many commercials on cable which we pay for.)
The best part of this film was Aunt Gigi, played by the lovely Carolyn Hennesy. I have loved her as the tough but lovable mob lawyer on GH, where she has set an example of a strong, loyal, independent woman for years. The other aspect that was enjoyable was the exterior of the fixer-upper home. I am sorry to say those two items don't push this over into the recommendation category for me.

I tried to get through this, but it is just so bland and boring. Nothing sweet or charming to pull me in. The chemistry is lacking with all the characters.
Most of the time what makes these kind of films tolerable is the chemistry between the two leads and when there is no chemistry and the story is bad written and conceived it's a recipe for disaster.
Don't get me wrong I enjoy holiday cheese, but this is just not it. I honestly don't get why it was made or how it made it past the outline stage.
I liked the aunt character but even she couldn't make me finish watching it. Not my holiday jam.

This may be the worst of the lot thus far for the 2024 Hallmark Christmas movies. The plot is all over the place and there were numerous moments where I felt like I was watching perhaps a movie sequel or a later episode of a TV serial that I was just tuning into for the first time. I couldn't quite figure out initially why there was animosity between the two romantic leads. Who? What? Where? Why? Did the DVR miss the first 60 minutes of the movie? It literally felt like somebody used an AI chatbot and asked it to "Write a Hallmark Christmas movie script and check all the bingo card boxes." Story was forced, tired, and boring. Somebody thought swapping out the "ice skating rink" trope with a roller skating rink made this one "original" and "different" from all the other previous "home renovation/house flipping" Hallmark Christmas movies. Loved the Nutella and HomeGoods plugs throughout the movie interspersed with actual Nutella and HomeGoods commercials. Like watching a 90 minute non-stop TV commercial.

I didn't know how this movie would play out, but I adore Ashley Greene and Wes Brown, so I thought, why not?
I loved it. Rose and Brysen's banter and chemistry were great, as was their chemistry. Her brother, Sal, is awesome. There were a few moments when Rose's attitude toward her hometown was tough, but I empathize. When my dad died, I didn't know if I wanted to stay. Grief is like that.
The skating was a nice nostalgia scene, and the karaoke cracked me up. Sal's character was a hoot, and I want to see more of him.
It's just a fun holiday movie. Nothing serious, just a cute watch, and you can't go wrong with Wes Brown.

Overall the movie was mediocre.
I enjoyed Wes Brown's character, always such a good actor that brings the right amount of easy going yet entertaining chill.
Ashley Greene's character was annoying at times yet I found that as the movie went on they fleshed out her story nicely and you came to like Rose at the end.
The brother, Sal, was hard to watch. Danny Pellegrino's acting is sub par at best. I found his scenes broke up the movie and made the movie harder to watch. If you are into gay love then you might like the more than normal gay romance but for me it was too much.
The rest of the actors were cast well. Some aspects of the story line were quite frustrating and if you can overlook it and just watch the movie at surface level you'll be able to make it to the end. Start with low expectations.

Such a cute film. It gives you all the cozy-cute feels of a Hallmark film without taking itself too seriously. Absolutely love the Sal (Danny Pellegrino) character. Also, Nancy Meyer would approve of the kitchen at the aunt's house. I could certainly watch this film again. I loved it as a kickoff to the holiday season. It was very well written without being too trite or too much of a departure from what we expect for a Hallmark film. It's a heartwarming movie with every possible charm in hand. I love the wardrobe and the beautiful decor. I laughed out loud more than a handful of times. Just a wonderful, funny, feel-good film that got me more than hyped for the Christmas season. 10/10 couldn't be better !
Really horrendous movie. The chemistry was nonexistent all around. I wasn't feeling the connection between either lead and their respective interests, it felt forced and tired. The plot and storyline was too predictable (even for hallmark);
I normally enjoy hallmark movies, I've watched nearly all of the 2024 releases, but this one I would not recommend. As well, I have to say that the product placement / ads was annoying (and I like Nutella! I like home goods!).
All things considered, sad to say that I would not recommend this movie. There are better options out there. This one felt like a somewhat festive flop.

What do you call a Xmas turkey movie with zero character development, no story and diversity all rolled into one movie?
Answer: Deck the Walls
OK where do we start to unwrap this awful festive movie? There is no start because you are wishing the end of movie in the first 15 min of the movie.
So sister has a brother who is ticking the diversity boxes because he wasn't hired for his acting abilties because he hasn't got any at all. Just goes full camp in every scene making the viewer know that he bats for the other team.
The two love interests are as boring and dull in having zero chemistry making you wonder why bother placing these two together in the first place?
The movie has zero plot and its just a cringe fest from start to finish so avoid this Xmas turkey at all costs.
Worst Xmas movie I have seen to date in 2024!

Deck the Walls was sweet and funny. There was heart and the characters were believable and likable. Danny Pelligrino as Sal was probably the best part. His karaoke performance was amazing. We laughed a lot watching this. It's nice to look at. Pretty houses, pretty people, pretty clothes, pretty holiday decorations, lots of laughs, and heart. What more can you ask for? Watch this movie! I don't always love hallmark Christmas movies but this one was fun and sweet. It has something a little different. I watched it with my teenage daughter and we both really liked it and it was a great kick off to the holiday season!
Just couldn't get into this. Not much substance to the plot. It felt like a hodge-podge of mini themes strung together..the romance, the fixer upper, the remembering of her parents, the less than confidant contractor etc. Wes Brown looked a bit old and aged...especially in the coffee house scene conversation with the blond. Perhaps it was bad make up or something else. If I compare it to a non-Christmas Fixer Upper Mystery on Hallmark Mystery, which I loved, this movie would rate even lower.
As I'm writing this, I'm trying to figure out what else to say to make the 600 word (not character) requirement, which it now does, hence the reason why I mostly rate, but don't review.

Deck the Halls is a heartwarming and hilarious holiday film featuring a fantastic cast that brings plenty of charm to the screen. The dynamic between the characters is delightful, with great chemistry that makes for a fun viewing experience. The visuals are festive and warm, and the script is full of humor, capturing the true essence of the holiday spirit. Whether you're in the mood for laughs or holiday cheer, this movie delivers it all. It's perfect for a cozy Christmas movie night and is sure to entertain the whole family. Highly recommended for getting into the Christmas spirit! Really Loved it!

Hallmark scriptwriters are getting worse and worse when it comes to developing realistic conflict between the love interests. This was no exception. For some reason, Hallmark thinks we need to have the hero and heroine be at odds to start the story and then follow along as they smooth over their differences and fall in lovel The paper-thin plot failed to hold my interest. It needed more emphasis on story and less of a focus on Danny Pellegrino. It was great to see General Hospital's Carolyn Hennesy in a fun role, but she wasn't enough to save this snoozefest. The lack of chemistry between Wes Brown and. Ashley Greene also didn't help. And only the Hallmark Channel could come up with a premise that the community needs to rally together to build a new home for the high school principal because he's outgrown his old one. Habitat for the Middle Class.
