It is a terrible story that unfolded for those men but this animated short does an amazing job honouring their live's and faith in the art style of the Coptic church. Like saints remembered before them through out the ages, this beautiful art work can serve as a way to remember this event. The hand drawn visuals are truly impressive and captivating. I feel like this animated short is a gift to the families that lost a son, brother, husband, or father in this senseless act. It highlights the fact that these men while no doubt scared for their lives, seemed to have decided it was worth the cost to proclaim their faith in Christ to the end. It is indeed a touchy subject as the Abrahamic faiths continue to have their tensions decade after decade but I don't think this film was created with the intention of creating more animosity. Everyone will have their biases going into any story related to events surrounding these faiths but I personally feel this is first and foremost a memoriam to the men that died for something they believed in. As an artist and animator myself I cannot stress enough how refreshing and inspired the artwork is in this film.

I am deeply familiar with the story of the 21 Martyrs of Libya. I have read books about them and read all the news coverage about ISIS's savage act. So I did not expect to be so deeply moved by this short animated film of their story. Its narration is simple and just enough. The art echoes Coptic iconography while also being true to the modern age during which this happened. The music and soundscape brought us right into their spiritual and physical world. I highly recommend this film and thank the creators for their thoughtful, prayerful and moving depiction of the martyrdom of these Coptic Orthodox young men.

This film is a true story. The authors didn't just want to make just any film around this; they also wanted to make film that would pay true homage to these martyrs. They didn't fail.
Almost every frame is a work of art. The influence of the iconography, the reverence of the martyrs and the impact on the ISIS captors is interwoven beautifully with the soundtrack and the theme of the story. The cultural references are accurate and will be familiar to people will acquainted with the Coptic Orthodox Church. ISIS made their own edited version of the events of the execution, this film fills in the rest of the details.

Intensely visceral and captivating. From the TRUE story to the art, 21 Martyrs is an animated retelling of the remarkable sacrifice of 21 Coptic Christians in Libya. The film doesn't shy away from the weight of their story, weaving it with depictions of supernatural moments reported by eyewitnesses such as the presence of angels and other extraordinary events.
The animation is stunning, capturing both the starkness of their final days and the awe-inspiring sense of something greater at work. There's a balance between the raw reality of their ordeal and a reverence for the spiritual elements that many believe surrounded this tragic event.
What I appreciated most about the film is its ability to make you feel connected to the martyrs, not just as victims of a horrific act but as individuals whose faith and courage shone through in unimaginable circumstances. It's a sobering and deeply moving watch, offering more than just a retelling of history, it's a story that stays with you, inspiring reflection long after the credits roll.

Note: This review does not contain spoilers, but rather my heartfelt reflections on the film's powerful message and impact.
I just watched The 21, and I am utterly shaken - in the most sobering and faith-strengthening way. This short yet profoundly powerful animation brings to life the courage, unwavering faith, and ultimate sacrifice of the 21 Coptic Christian martyrs. The neo-Coptic iconography, the hauntingly beautiful storytelling, and the reverence with which their story is told left me in tears.
As an American, I have the freedom to profess my faith without fear, yet this film was a humbling reminder that so many around the world suffer and even die for the name of Christ. It doesn't feel fair. It makes me realize how easily we can take our religious liberty for granted while others stand firm in faith unto death.
While I have endured spiritual warfare and personal trials throughout my life, watching The 21 deepened my gratitude for my faith and the responsibility that comes with it. Their story reminds me that faith is not just about comfort-it's about endurance, love, and unwavering devotion to Christ, no matter the cost.
This film is not just a piece of art; it's a testimony, as well as a legacy of their story in the Hall of Faith. It challenges us to reflect, to pray, and to boldly live out our faith. Their sacrifice was not in vain, and their story deserves to be known.
I give The 21 10/10 stars because it is more than a film-it is a deeply moving experience that leaves an imprint on the soul. Its powerful message, breathtaking artistic style, and the weight of its storytelling make it an unforgettable must-watch.
To those who have not seen The 21, I urge you to watch it. Let it move you, humble you, and inspire you to stand firm in your faith, just as they did.

"The 21" impresses not only with the boldness of its theme but also with the creativity of its execution. Based on the tragic events of 2015, when 21 men were brutally executed by ISIS, the film transforms this story into a powerful audiovisual tribute to the courage and unshakable faith of the victims. By tackling such a painful and sensitive subject, the filmmakers strike an admirable balance between respect, art, and cinematic storytelling, creating a work that goes beyond the initial shock to reach something deeply meaningful.
The film's visual style is undoubtedly one of its greatest triumphs. By adopting the aesthetics of "neo-Coptic iconography," the animators were able to capture the spiritual essence of Coptic faith and translate it into a unique and powerful visual language. The use of solid colors, geometric shapes, and almost abstract imagery creates an atmosphere rich in symbolism. Each frame feels like a sacred painting, carefully composed to evoke deep emotions. This stylistic choice not only honors the artistic tradition of the victims' faith but also offers an immersive and unforgettable visual experience for the audience.
The narrative, in turn, is handled with a sobriety that amplifies the emotional impact of the film. The use of a guided and carefully scripted narration provides a sense of structure that helps the audience process the disturbing content. At the same time, the film doesn't shy away from showing the cruelty of the act it depicts, but it does so in an artistic and reflective way, turning the horror into a meditation on human resilience and the strength of faith in the face of hatred.
The technical elements of "The 21" are equally impressive. The sound design plays a crucial role, using a minimalist soundtrack and carefully measured sound effects to heighten the dramatic weight of each scene. The editing work, on the other hand, is masterful, with precise transitions and a montage that guides the audience's gaze almost like choreography. The attention to detail in constructing each sequence reveals the level of planning and dedication involved in the production. This meticulous approach, combined with the expressive power of the visual style, elevates the film to a level of technical excellence rarely seen in animated short films.
Another standout feature is how "The 21" uses its cinematic language to engage with broader issues. In addition to being a memorial to the victims, the short film is a reflection on the power of fear and faith. It contrasts inhuman brutality with spiritual dignity, reminding us that violence can never erase the strength of the human spirit. It's a film that, while deeply rooted in a specific tragedy, speaks to all who have faced injustice, oppression, or loss.
"The 21" is more than just a short film: it's a work of art and a historical document. Its ability to transform pain and violence into beauty and contemplation is a testament to the power of art to animate real stories. Combining creativity, technique, and a deep sense of humanity, the film not only honors the 21 men it commemorates but also challenges the audience to reflect on the values that unite us in the face of cruelty. An essential and unforgettable work.

The short animated film honoring the 21 Coptic martyrs of Libya is a profound and evocative tribute, seamlessly blending art, history, and faith. Produced by a global team of over 70 artists from 24 countries, the film stands as a testament to collaborative creativity and cultural reverence. Narrated in English with Arabic dialogue, it bridges linguistic and artistic boundaries to tell a story of immense historical and spiritual significance.
Having seen an earlier version of this film last year, I was struck by the remarkable evolution in its artwork and soundtrack. The final version exudes a level of polish and emotional depth that is nothing short of astonishing. The animation captures the solemn beauty and timeless spirituality of Coptic iconography, while the hauntingly beautiful soundtrack underscores the gravity of the narrative.
The juxtaposition of real-life footage with animation is masterful, amplifying the film's emotional resonance. Viewers are drawn into the palpable tension and courage of the Coptic Christians facing martyrdom, juxtaposed with the confusion and frustration of their ISIS captors. This interplay invites profound reflection, leaving one to contemplate the extraordinary faith and conviction that have inspired martyrs throughout history to embrace sacrifice.

As a copt, the martyrdom of the 21 was an incredibly traumatic experience. Although the eyes of the world were on the Coptic Christians it always felt like the world didn't understand what they seeing. This animation, being published ten years after the incident has made me feel so seen. I have watched it countless times and each time I am drawn to tears. It turned an earth shattering scene of resilient faith into a digestible display of the events endured by the best ambassadors of my ancestors. The Coptic art style has brought to life the ancient stories passed down by my ancestors in such an authentic way. I cannot put in words the gratitude I have for this production and I can't wait to watch it again!

Having been familiar with tragic and horrific act of terrorism, I looked forward to this short film about the 21. I was incredibly moved and emotional while watching, as the animation and additional insight of the film added another layer of detail that can never be captured by just reading news articles. The use of Coptic hymns and imagery provides much needed context and complexity to the story, as well as the emphasis on the men's long path of torture and relentless resolve and faith through it all. May God bless and reward all those responsible for this short film that will, undoubtedly, move and affect millions more.

This short film pays tribute to the bravery of 21 Coptic Christians martyred by ISIS for refusing to recant their faith in Jesus. They follow in the footsteps of countless thousands who have been martyred for their faith throughout history, and many who have been martyred since in dark places like Nigeria.
Their story is a testament to the power of their faith and the love of their Savior. The challenge in telling a story like this is not to simply glamorize the martyrs as heroes or villainize their captors as evil spawn of the devil. All Christians who read the words of Jesus know that their faith is risky, but that God is a master at turning evil into good. Just look at Jesus on the Cross, and ponder the power of the resurrection!
This film is artistically intriguing and tastefully presents a very difficult story. I hope and pray that it gets a wide showing by a thoughtfully receptive audience.

Ten years after the matyrdom of the 21 Coptic Christians (mostly) from Upper Egypt this film shows what happened in a very appropiate, authentic and meaningful way. It is wonderful to see how respectfully and accurately the filmmakers captured the scenes. The combination of Coptic iconography and modern animation is unique, the speakers and the music are strong but never too much. I was amazed how moving and deep this short film captured the faith of the men and the supernatural fight behind the actions. Great respect for this piece of art! I am confident that this movie will help the story to go out to the world!

The 21 promises to be a deeply moving animated film that brings the story of the 21 Coptic martyrs to the world stage. It offers a glimpse into the resilience and faith of the Copts, featuring an innovative visual style inspired by neo-Coptic iconography. This film is not just a work of art but also a profound reflection of the spiritual strength, faith, and courage of the Copts.
Reflecting on the story of the 21 martyrs, and having visited Al-Our, Minya, the hometown of these brave men, makes me even prouder to be a Copt.
I can't wait for the world to experience this incredible work and be inspired to continually reflect on the strength of the faith.

What an incredible short. I do not even know where to start. I may be atheist, but I can tell this resonates with many Christians and Muslims alike. The animation as well, oh it is incredible. The fact you can watch this for free on YouTube as well is remarkable. This deserves way much more attention, because most of us believe the Islamic State is just a thing of the past, part of history, but oh could we be more wrong. To my knowledge they keep expanding their territory in the Sahel, Somalia and I've also heard about their second rise in Syria. We cannot let ISIS continue their genocidal acts, which is why I will share this documentary with all my friends and family. As the recent saying goes, this documentary is absolute cinema. Bravo.

The film opens with a solemn narration, recounting the tragic events that led to the capture of these men. They were migrant workers from Egypt, seeking a better life, when they were kidnapped and forced to renounce their faith. Despite immense pressure and torture, they refused to abandon their beliefs. Their unwavering faith ultimately led to their execution, a moment that shook the world.
The opening narration of The 21 sets the tone for a deeply moving story, one rooted in faith, perseverance, and sacrifice. It begins by introducing the 21 Coptic Christian men-migrant workers from Egypt-who had traveled to Libya in pursuit of better economic opportunities. Coming from humble backgrounds, these men had left their families behind, dreaming of a future where they could provide for their loved ones.
However, their journey took a dark turn when they were captured by ISIS militants, an extremist group notorious for spreading terror and targeting religious minorities. The film effectively portrays the grim reality of their captivity, showing the psychological and physical torment they endured. In the face of relentless pressure, they were forced to make an impossible choice-renounce their faith and live, or hold steadfast and perish.
