Corey Sevier and Jodie Sweetin in The Heiress and the Handyman (2024)

Lacking

Over the top acting (by most), choppy storyline, bland chemistry, goofy music clips... I am not looking for Jane Austen intuitiveness when I watch Hallmark, these movies are my mental release, but I do appreciate good writing and directing - followed by believable acting.

This movie was reminiscent of an 80's sitcom, that had 1 season. I have seen an improvement in Hallmark movies of late; a little more grit, depth and reality. This movie did not make the cut.

To produce this, edit it and think it's up to par, is a major oversight. I actually like these actors, just not their performance in this particular film.

Sweet but low budget Hallmark Fare

The basic storyline is the usually enjoyable girl has an empty life, lifestyle changes, finds new life. There could have been more background of Jodie's character prior to her move, more punch to her transition, maybe some flashbacks to build her character, more conflict, more comedy keeping it light and fun. The biggest distraction for me personally, is the awful wig that Jodie Sweetin wears through the entire film. She's a very attractive woman, so why? The other issue I had is why all the dollar store garland throughout the farmhouse. Was the budget for hair and sets really that low? Not a waste of time, but it could have been better.

This is bad.

5.4 stars.

Oh, the humanity! Sweetin is off and for her that's not unusual, but way off this time. I rarely finish a movie that is under six stars, this is no exception. I made it to 30 minutes or so. There are so many things wrong with the presentation, I wasn't able to focus on the narrative at all. The simplistic and laughable way that the lead female character is portrayed is, well for lack of better words, laughable. The lead male role is as good as can be for what he has to work with. The script is terrible. I was so disappointed in this film, no wonder it's already been released on Hallmark Network and yet the official release date isn't for another 2+ weeks? Does that make sense? No. The only thing that makes sense is that the producers and the Network realize this movie is a flop, and they want to get it out of the way, brush it aside, hope it's soon forgotten....ugh.

Disappointed

I love Hallmark movies. Even the not so good ones. Jodie is my least favorite actress and I usually skip hers. But I really like Corey so I thought I'd give it a try. It was the worst I've seen. First, the wig. Why???? It was so distracting. Jodie is a pretty woman but that wig was the worst. Second, absolutely no character development at all. This could have been a better movie. It seemed just rushed. Hallmark, you can do so much better. This should not be the movie you use to try to advertise the new Hallmark plus. I have my sweatshirt ready so please do not disappoint me for the Fall and Winter season.

Does anyone really decorate that way?

Bad hair and over the top set decoration. Maybe Hallmark should return to producing all their own movies. This one was produced by Brain Power Studios, the same production studio that also did "The Jane Mysteries". The same guy directed both and they both share the same problem. The scripts are weak and the dialogue silly but that can be forgiven if the characters are properly developed. I like Jodie Sweetin but her character is portrayed as clueless and inept. I blame the director and writer. June Waltshire is supposed to be a graduate of Oxford and yet is not aware of how her money is being managed or even how to hold a job in a coffee shop? I realize it's a movie but please stop the stereotype of clueless rich people. I might add that the ladies of the town were portrayed as snobby and a bit snarky. Another stereotype that should stop. I live in a small town and no one I know would be that rude. At least not to your face. As others mentioned, the wigs or hair extensions or whatever are horrible. Jodie Sweetin is a very attractive woman so why give her such distracting hair? Corey Sevier and the rest of the cast did fine with what they had to work with. I especially liked Ann Pirvu as the lead's sister. It's not the best movie of this type but there have been worse. Extra points for the animals. I give it a generous six.

I found it very interesting that as this movie was premiered on Hallmark another Jodie Sweetin movie debuted on "the other network" at the same time.

It's been done

Spoiled heiress loses fortune and her life gets totally downgraded. The good news in this movie was that going from luxury to nothing took 9 minutes including opening credits. Some movies with this premise stretch that out in the hopes of earning humor points. June learns some humility almost as quickly, so there is not a lot of time to really hate her character. From there we go into the phase of learning about the work ahead (but that never actually manifests). No blue jeans yet. But the competition challenge complete with trash talk comes pretty quickly. And so we have another Hallmark movie where someone enters a contest with experienced competition but she is a totally novice in the required skills. And not just one category, but several.

This movie takes an interesting approach to how June's new neighbors adjust to her. They are far more sympathetic to her than in the usual stories where a high society person meets small town folk.

The pacing in the middle is laid back and some might consider it stagnant. One would expect the arrival of the fair contests would be the climax, but it seemed a little early and then there was a complete turn of direction with a few unexpected things before the obvious ending. While there were some unexpected things, this part was rushed a little.

The acting is OK, but unrealistically upbeat, which for me wasn't necessarily negative. The dialog has good moments. There isn't much heavy tension. The approaching contests were about all in that category. In the category of makeup, there was at least one scene where Sweetin didn't look good in close ups.

Jodie Sweetin's June is pretty much what you would expect from Jodie. There is little character development of June other than what takes place in the first 10 minutes. Corey Sevier fills the part of her romantic interest but doesn't add much of a counterpoint.

Fun on the Farm & Fall Feels

To the person saying they watched 30 mins, if you don't watch a full movie, don't rate it. You didn't give it long enough to have a fair viewpoint. I thought it was sweet, loved Gillian & the movie had vibes of Harvest Moon but less comedy. I was happy to see fall included instead of just a movie set at any time of year included as a fall into love movie (I know it's on the app, but it will be on linear soon). Corey brings his A game in anything he does, & Jodie did well, although I think there needed to be more characters included earlier on. I like the tie-in at the end that I won't spoil. I think a little more comedy would've worked better for this one, but overall it was a pleasant, wholesome watch, that I enjoyed. This was clearly an acquisition but it's a fun watch. The animals & fall vibes are the winner, so if you're in the mood for an easy lighthearted comfort watch, definitely give it a go.

TOO PREDICTABLE AND DOWNRIGHT BORING!

The plot sounded promising but quickly went down hill into a way too predictable, even for Hallmark storyline. An heiress, June, played by Jodie Sweetin, loses her fortune, but inheirits a rural farm. She meets her handsome neighbor, Bart, played by Corey Sevier. Bart helps June adapt to rural farm life. A Huge DISTRACTION is the downright awful wig that Jodie Sweetin wears throughout the entire movie! The sets are horribly decorated with dollar store sunflower garland everywhere throughout the farmhouse. The plot is so predictable and supporting characters are annoying! The only reason I gave it 2 stars was for Corey Sevier, who did the best he could with the dialogue he received (I've enjoyed him in many otherHallmark movies). There is really no romance instead the storyline focuses on the heiress's transition to farm life, in other words, it's a poor rendition of Green Acres, and like the TV show, this movie also includes a pet pig.

One thing that drives me crazy about all the Hallmark movies is that they start to drag and get repetitive in the middle of the movie and then HURRIEDLY RUSHES THROUGH the final 5 MINUTES to wrap up all the loose ends to the movie! ITS VERY HURRIED AND RUSHED and feels incomplete!

A poorly written and BORING script, poorly acted (except for Corey Sevier who did a good job), AND OH THAT HORRIBLE WIG Jodie Sweetin wore that was such a DISTRACTION equals a MOVIE DISASTER! Please cast Corey Sevier in better movies please!

Camp but Cute

Camp seems to be the name of the game in this movie and I actually enjoyed it! The storyline of a Paris Hilton-type character losing it all then redeeming herself, and classic Hallmark romance is an easy watch if on occasion a bit cheesy. When watching a Hallmark, I personally like the predictableness of how they play out, and I think the script and plot reflect that. The fall vibes in it are a nice way to ease into the Thanksgiving/Fall/Halloween spirit, and since I quite like watching Hallmarks during the fall and winter to relax and unwind, I think I just might add this movie to my rotation!

Honestly, not that bad!

I feel a bit silly, cuz I did not clock the wig on Sweetin as all these other reviewers did. But besides that: this was not a terrible watch. I thought Sweetin's acting was pretty good, and the main guy was... fine! Not a whole lot of connection between them though, and the script romance was not that believable. And the decor in the aunt's house was actually abysmal, so plasticky-looking and Hobby Lobby-coded.

The real stars of this show were the animals, especially the pig! Cuz each of the characters were not the most engaging - I had trouble connecting with any of them in particular. But I did connect with that pig.

What Was That?

If the goal was to entice people to subscribe to Hallmark + with this movie, it's a huge no. I already know I subscribe, but bringing in new people with this one? Oh my. Between the plot holes, poor acting, and horrible script, this one should have never been made. It was painful to watch, and why did Jodie Sweetin have vocal fry?

I don't know why this movie was ever created, but it should go in the vault, never to return. I know Hallmark can do better, and this was just sloppy. I enjoy both of these actors, but this was ridiculous. The lack of chemistry was present, and her overacting was full-on cringe. The quality of this movie was horrendous.

I literally had issues with it because of her hair.

Loved the pink blouse and pants, ivory pleated dress. Couple more of the outfits. Her HAIR!!! That is absolutely the worst wig I have ever seen in my life!!! It was hideous. It was hard to look at. IF it's NOT a wig.... Do SOMETHING.

Almost turned it off in the first few minutes. Maybe she was having a horrible time in the first part.. I realize these movies are normally all the same. Had Bart not been introduced into the movie I wouldn't have continued watching. The bank safety deposit box scene was gag worthy.

If you can hang in until Bart makes his entrance then you can stomach through it. But the hair...

It's fun, even if you have to continually suspend disbelief

Disagree with the harshness of the reviews here. It's a solid 7 on the Hallmark scale, and I watch probably 75 of these a year. So I've got some experience in this area.

What I liked: -It was fun and silly. That's what I want most out of a Hallmark film. By far.

-The characters were likable and had some chemistry. I especially liked the secondary female character.

-It was a fun setting and had a festival, which always is a plus in my book

What I didn't like:

-So much suspension of disbelief. For example, she was completely broke and inherited the house...but suddenly had money again to pay for basic things like food? Also, there's a brief shot in a montage of her being a hair dresser to make ends meet. This isn't an instant "make ends meet" kind of gig. You have to train for this and get a license. So much non-stop lazy nonsense like this.

Just look away.

This was really bad, I don't normally do a lot of reviews but this particular one needed a huge warning sign, just look away, change the channel and don't waste your time.

I am having a hard time handling all the the non stop commercials trying to promote this. This was so typical and very boring, I couldn't even get through the entire movie. After 15 minutes of watching I already knew how it ending. And let not forget to mention the elephant in the room... her fake wig is so distracting you can't focus on anything else, she is a pretty woman why make her look so bad? Hallmark we expect SO much better than this.

So bad you can't look away

This is one of the worst Hallmarks movies I have ever seen. It was so bad, you couldn't look away. It was a train wreck, it was like Jodie never took acting lessons. This movie is design to be sweet, it was more of a comedy because the acting was so bad. I laughed out loud because it was so bad and the script was honestly trash. Don't waste you time, skip it. There's really nothing else to say but the review requires me to use a certain amount of words in order to publish. I can't hardly even meet the minimum words, because there's nothing else to say. It's just nothing but a train wreck and a nightmare.

Shellac Hairspray no longer in style

Someone please tell Jodie Sweetin shellac hairspray went out of style with Woodstock '69. Her hair wouldn't move in a hurricane or tornado. She pretty and talented but I just stop looking at her hair. It is just so unnatural. I love all Hallmark movies and have seen her previous ones. Sorry this is too short to post; but someone needs to tell her. I know Hallmark can do better, and this was just sloppy. I enjoy both of these actors, but this was ridiculous. The lack of chemistry was present, and her overacting was full-on cringe. The quality of this movie was horrendous. And please TURN DOWN THE "BACKGROUND" MUSIC.

Perfect Autumn Baking Movie

This movie was everything I could possibly want in a Hallmark movie- cozy autumn vibes? Check! A rivalry with an elderly woman over a best-pig/pie contest? Check! JODIE SWEETEN FROM FULL-HOUSE? Check!!

This is the perfect movie to put on while you bake apple pies and other autumn treats with friends. The pacing is slow, yes, but in a way that feels cozy and comforting, and reminds me of Thanksgiving at my grandparents growing up.

I also really loved the cast and characters- Dottie, her dead-aunt's former rival? Obsessed! I want a sequel with her love story!! Great plot-twist at the end too, I didn't see it coming!!

It's a big no for me

I love Hallmark movies especially the Fall/Christmas ones. They're my escape. But Jodie Sweetin is my least favorite actress and I can never watch any movie she is in. She just needs to be let go from Hallmark movies. Her acting is no good and she tries too hard. So, not only is her acting not on par but she also just doesn't have the look, especially for this character which is a ditzy heiress. I hate to say this but they should've gone with someone a little younger, or at least looks younger. I could've seen Fiona Gubelmann play this role, even Jana Kramer. And why does it look like they put her in a wig? It's awful. As for the movie itself, its been done. There also could've be more of storyline behind her character.

This movie is the turd that will not flush

The title sounds like a porn movie. That would actually suggest more of a plot than this movie actually has. The main character is the biggest Karen ever, who is stupid to 6 decimal places. No man would go a mile of her. The only way this character June would plausibly is if someone said her name in the mirror three times. She was clad by the wardrobe person strait out of Goodwill. The rest of the characters are flat and demonstrate the personality of a crayon. It would help this script if the main character, June, would move away from her gingerbread house.

Whoever wrote the script should have their pension revolked.

Bored, and I'm a regular hallmarker

I have to say I love the fall movies because there's so few of them. I was excited for this one because Jodie isn't in too many anymore and like most, I grew up with her. I'm a hallmark regular so I know what to expect. Very rarely now am I pleasantly surprised with a movie. I know what to expected, I know all the story lines and know they're just a comfort for 2 hours. This one was so boring. Absolutely nothing about this entertained me. The wig they made Jodie/June wear was AWFUL! How can you allow it to be used when it's so obviously horrible? Come on yall. I don't know if they started out hoping this would be as good as Harvest Moon from a few years ago but it didn't even compare. I had more hope..

Whose idea was the wig?

Jodie Sweetin does not need a wig and it was distracting for the entire movie. I agree that there needed to be more background or flashbacks for her character and probably for Bertie, too. Also, the gay travel-mate was totally unnecessary and insulting and stereotypical. Finally, there was little chemistry between Corey and Jodie. It was just non-existent, no real flirting, no real serious conversations, no fights, no nothing until the last 2 minutes. Maybe what was missing was the usual "best friend" to keep telling her that she was falling for Bart. This could have been an interesting story with more plot and character development. A big disappointment.
