It feels so warm

I had the chance to watch at JAFF yesterday, and honestly, this was one of the most anticipated films. The ticket war was crazy-sold out within minutes!

Okay, it's a bit hard to give a review without spoilers. Here's the thing: the storyline is great, I really liked it. As a drama film, the drama hits just right-not overly cheesy like some other Indonesian dramas. The acting was incredibly impressive, and seeing Chicco here, his performance was amazing. OH, and this movie is super funny, guys! I didn't expect to laugh as much as I did.

This movie is not a movie that forces the audience to cry, or this movie does not sell sadness, but warmth. So if you cry, maybe it's happy tears.

My first impression after leaving the cinema? The film felt so heartwarming and enjoyable to watch. You don't need to overthink it-just go to the theater, sit back, and enjoy a genuinely warm and delightful film.

heartwarming and seems to give a hug

"1 Kakak 7 Ponakan" is a movie that is so heartwarming and seems to give a hug to anyone who is struggling for his family, especially to his siblings. After watching the movie, I still sit quietly with my cheeks still wet until the screen turns off. Memories of family seemed to come to mind. So I want to hug each one and say thank you, including to myself.

Yandy Laurens skillfully stirs the audience's emotions. What's interesting is that while watching it makes me laugh, at the same time it makes me sad. It's never too late to feel what the characters are really feeling. Scenes that are sad still have things that make me laugh, but suddenly I immediately shut up and feel sad, and conversely. The laughter and sadness go up and down with the right portion and pacing.

The heart is touched and happy to see how Moko struggles to give up his dreams, to take care of and support his siblings, and their togetherness that looks simple but so meaningful. Not to forget the kindness received from loved ones around him which makes it even more touching. The characters are also diverse and unique. From the loveable ones to the annoying ones.

This film is even more special with scenes without any dialog or only accompanied by the sound of a piano but it makes my chest feel tight, I really get the feel and the message. This is also supported by the way the movie is shot and the performances of the cast. There are also scenes that are short but really memorable, made me laugh even until the audience applauds when watching it.

In addition to the captivating performances of the cast, the shots and details shown add to the warmth of the narrative. There are times when the images are taken at a distance with a rather long duration, capturing moments of warm togetherness in the midst of a difficult struggle. The movie doesn't only look at Moko's point of view, but also that of his siblings. In the end, this movie will make me realize the meaning of family, struggle, and sincere love.

Very inspiring

This film teaches how beautiful family is in our lives. Likewise, no matter how difficult the conditions are Family is the place for us to return to, as well as Moko who had to make sacrifices for his younger siblings where he gave up everything His ambition is to study for a Masters in Melbourne, and Moko continues to struggle to make a living. His younger siblings because he thinks they are a priority, and I conclude that No matter how difficult the conditions are, you cannot live without family. Love for your family, your family is your home. Keep spirit FAMILY WARRIOR. You can live because of them, and family is everything.

Beauty exists in this movie.

A movie that made me laugh and cry at the same time. In this film, I was genuinely brought to tears just by a single line, not some over-the-top crying scene. The ending is the moment of truth, and that final touch wraps everything up so beautifully.

For those who haven't watched it yet, let me sum it up in one word: BEAUTIFUL. The storytelling is just so captivating. And when it comes to cinematography, it doesn't disappoint either, there are so many breathtaking shots. The director's genius in using wide and zoom lenses makes the film even more visually stunning.

Man, the part that completely blew my mind was the wall being torn down. You might not notice it at first, but it hit me hard. Throughout the movie, that broken wall felt out of place, like it didn't belong. But once I realized its meaning in the ending, I was beyond amazed, this is the brilliance of the writer.

And the music!! That's the best part. The soundtrack fits perfectly, simple yet so on point. Sal Priadi might just become my new favorite musician.

Massive props to all the actors, your performances were incredible, and no one missed a beat. And to Yandy Laurens, please don't stop making beautiful films like this.

Yandy Laurens is a genius

1 Kakak 7 Ponakan is a beautifully crafted family drama that proves Yandy Laurens is a genius in storytelling. The film is a heartfelt exploration of familial bonds, especially resonating with the sandwich generation, earning a solid 9/10 or even a 9.2/10 if you find yourself in their shoes. Its simplicity is its strength-offering a story that's unassuming yet profoundly meaningful.

This warm and emotional film delivers moments that will make you cry deeply while reminding you of the importance of family. However, a minor drawback is the depiction of a character so angelic that it leans towards being unrealistic. Despite this, the film remains a masterpiece that celebrates love, sacrifice, and growth within the chaos of family life.

Simple and Beautiful

Simple and touching storyline, all elements and aspects in this movie executed brilliantly. Love, struggle, sadness, and also a feeling of warmth can also be felt from my side as a film audience. The story revolves around the issue of sandwich generation, It becomes a dilemma from many sides, whether family is a responsibility or a burden. This film teaches that no one in the family should feel indebted "berhutang". Sacrifice and sincerity must coexist within a family.

The acting from the cast, became one of the aspect of this film's success. Breath taking but simple cinematography. Beautiful soundtrack, many of which are taken from songs written by Sal Priadi.

warm flow and dialogue

Truly a drama that warms the whole heart and soul. The choice of words is good, not cheesy and not forced. The portion of sadness is also just right so that we who watch it are not made full of sadness but are made warm. The music is also very unified from each sceneworthy. The writing of the characteristics of the characters is really fitting and they share their feelings for each other and still make sense. For much or even almost all of this film the depiction is very, very good, the coloring techniques are very suitable for the content of the story. There is no reason to miss this film, which is just the right length, even though it is 2 hours long, but it is very satisfying. Worth watching!!!

Maybe what i said is harsh but...

1 Kakak 7 Ponakan, is a Indonesian drama film released in 2025

My Review:

Storyline

The story is i think its generic drama one usually found in cinema. The only thing that is unique is the main protagonist suffering from "Hero Syndrome". Must do this, must do that. Maybe im kinda bit biased towards my personal perspective but really? Is this 10/10? Best Film of 2025?

The story progression is just absurd, there is no character growth and wow... its like watching a harem protagonist in anime inserted to a cinema. The MC got trampled upon and manipulated by his nephews. Like why care about nephews? And why must only Nephews why not the other people also. This is so unrelatable to the point i cant comprende.

Overall

I think its solid 6,5/10 for Indo Cinema.

Nice for all

Yandy Laurens it's the best director, i think he writte a story with heart and him feelings. Such as from a technical perspective, cinematography, directing the actors optimally so as to produce a good storyline. And then in giving the image colors that tend to be natural without using a lot of filters so that I can feel the aesthetic that Yandy wants to give. In essence, the technical matters in this film it's good enough, but I think Freya's role as Nina in this film still has shortcomings. She is a new actress in film, so the emotions she plays still feel a little fake and stiff. Good film.

The best Indonesian Movie of All Time! (So far)

Finally, Indonesia has a movie that tick all the boxes, 1. Relatable 2. No unnecessary conversations 3. No unnecessary scene that doesn't relate to the story 4. Moving, has a clear message.

5. Brings all emotions at the same time.

Haven't seen Indonesian movie that does this (so far). The best Indonesian movie of all time to me!

Kudos for the Yandy Laurens, Arswendo, scriptwriter, Chicco Kurniawan, Amanda Rawles and all casts, for delivering such a raw, honest, and beautiful movie!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

Let be start by saying few thins...

First of all i am not Indo, im not asian. But you do really not need to be any of these above to relate and understand the "culture" of being there for eachother. I am Middle eastern and i can say this much: Wheather not you are from Türkiye and have to live with your siblings or a Hermano in Mexico supporting your tia, you can relate. Any country with family values and hasn't been westernized will for sure feel this movie.

I loved every minute of the minute. I only miss some karma for 1 character in this movie but i wont spoil it and you will understand when you watch it. All in all really great movie, i wish it was bit longer.

Sandwich Generation is Real

Another movie that showing sandwich generation, especially in Indonesia, is real. Just like another movie "Home Sweet Loan", describe how young generation must sacrifice their time and opportunity, to make a better life for others, without any choice. This is also a kind reminder, that having a big family, will come with big responsibility, and many are not well prepared for what comes next in life.

Help my tears are flowing

"Berpikir bisa punya hidupku sendiri tuh salah gitu rasanya" "Tahu gimana waktu mikirin diri sendiri, kok jadi ngerasa bersalah ya?"

Sooo relateable as sandwich gen.

He's such a good character that i wonder how proud his parents (fiction) would be of him. His brother and sister too (not eka en osa) are also a good people that the kids are so kind.

Slice of life story that hits too close to home to many people especially asian sandwich gen. Also Eka's character is so close to reality. A literal parasite that keeps yapping as if they're magnificent but actually a loser. No character development of him because irl people like him wouldn't change for the better too.

It's because they are such a sweetheart that it doesn't feel like a burden. All the suffering feels worth it because the reason aka the family is worth it. That's why the trust between family members is soo important. I feel the warmth of this family but also longing for the same.

Family can never be a burden for anyone...

Yandy Laurens' A Brother and 7 Siblings is more than a film - it's a quiet embrace for anyone who's ever felt crushed by the weight of family responsibility. It reminds us that family can never be a burden, only a mirror reflecting who we truly are.

Moko's journey from reluctant guardian to devoted brother-figure isn't driven by choice, but by circumstance - a poignant truth that responsibility isn't something we choose; it chooses us. And when we accept it with love, it becomes ours.

Not everyone has a Maurin - someone who understands, supports, and stays. That absence makes the film's emotional core even more resonant. It asks: What kind of grown-ups will we become if we believe we owe something to our family? The answer lies in sacrifice - not as duty, but as love in its purest form.

Some people are wired to give more, to carry more, simply because sacrifice is how they express love. Moko is one of them. And in watching him, we see ourselves - tired, torn, but still trying.

Viewers have rightly called this film "a hug for anyone struggling for their family." It doesn't offer solutions. It offers understanding. And sometimes, that's all we need.

Ate

LOVE U YANDY LAURENS Such a good popcorn movie (even great without the popcorn).

No pressure, just go with the flow of the drama. The story is simple, but it hits deep like stab on the leg so you couldn't walk easily. Full of conflicts, but executed really well.

Great world-building. The character development could've been stronger, but maybe diving too deep would've made the pacing drag a bit.

VERY GOOD CAST, the characters look so pitiful, in the best way.

The sound design is amazing, especially during the cooking scenes. I wonder how they pulled that off.

This movie is very quiet, but I think that's intentional. The atmosphere is really touching if you're an emotional person, save some tissues It's a film about family, but... I honestly think it's better to watch it alone. It feels too personal to share with someone else.
