On June 10, the official press conference of the 29th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival officially kicked off the 29th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (July 3~July 13).

Festival Director Shin Chul declared that Bifan has entered “AI Step 2” this year, following last year’s initial stage, and shared an ambitious goal to train 10,000 filmmakers over the next five years. Director Shin also referenced a famous remark by German filmmaker Werner Herzog, who once said, “Even after 4,500 years, computers will not make better films than I do.” He continued, “We trained an AI model using Herzog’s scripts, interviews, and other materials. The result was a screenplay titled “About a Hero”, which has been selected as this year’s Opening Film at Bifan.”

Wartime Thailand in 1941 isn’t often depicted on screen, and Operation Undead drops us straight into Chumphon Province just as Japanese forces crash onto its beaches. The humid air, taut with anticipation, crackles with the promise of conflict—and then a bioweapon shatters any familiar expectations. Suddenly, men on both sides don’t just wage war; they become Fumetsu, undead soldiers who remember every order they once followed.

Rather than opting for mindless horror, director Kome Kongkiat Komesiri blends stark frontline drama with gruesome visceral shocks. Close-quarter firefights and blood-spattered foliage establish a rhythm that’s equal parts Saving Private Ryan–style chaos and indie-film grit.

Yet when infected Thai troops pause mid-skirmish to mourn their lost lives, the tone veers into unsettling territory: these aren’t cannon fodder but tragic victims still tethered to their humanity. That tension—soldiers as both heroes and monsters—becomes the film’s beating heart.

From director Aimee Kuge, the indie horror film Cannibal Mukbang puts a horror movie twist on the mukbang trend, and it’s now available on VOD from Jackrabbit Media.

In the new horror movie, “Shy and looking for love, Mark quickly becomes smitten with the outgoing and mysterious Ash, who somehow, much to his surprise, reciprocates the attraction. But as his feelings for her intensify, so does his unexpected submersion into Ash’s biggest love: the wild world of mukbanging. And with it, lots of bloodshed.”

South Korea’s K-Movie Entertainment is to handle international sales of Thai horror Our House and is introducing the upcoming feature to buyers at Filmart.

It marks just the third non-Korean title to be handled by the Seoul-based firm after animation Synchronize and live-action horror Operation Undead.

The story centres on a successful sales executive and his pregnant wife who find their dream home. But after moving in, strange occurrences begin to happen, while a mysterious connection between the husband and the house next door emerges.

The Thai film will be released on Digital on March 18 from Well Go USA, followed by Blu-ray and DVD via Amazon’s Manufacture-on-Demand program on March 25.

The progress of the cinema of the region is undisputed. With governments allocating more money in the cinema in a number of the countries of the union, streamers and particularly Neftflix investing heavily, along with foreign companies as in the case of Korean Cj Entertainment in Vietnam, the unique stories from a series of regions where everyday life and the supernatural always went hand in hand, finally found a space to blossom. Following suit from Malaysia, which had a tremendous 2023, Indonesia also made a leap forward this year, headed by a rather strong box office and a catalogue of movies that moved beyond 200 in 2024, even if more than 60 of them are horror movies. Filipino cinema, however, is still on top, in a place it does not seem to lose, particularly since, industry-wise, local cinema seems to be the most organized in the region. We’ve gotta give it to director Kongkiat Komesiri for going all ambitious with Operation Undead. It’s a zombie film alright, and it does come with all the usual tropes—blood, gore, and violence in plenty. It carries an unmistakable unhingedness that’s often seen in Southeast Asian genre cinema. But unlike most zombie affairs, things are drastically different here. This is not a story about an apocalyptic world where a bunch of humans have to kill these brainless monsters in order to survive. Instead, the zombies are sort of heroes in this story that doesn’t shy away from using its war backdrop to the fullest. Operation Undead is not quite fun, has a rather depressing ending, and much of it drags, which makes it difficult for me to call it a good film, no matter how much I appreciate the effort.
