A Heartfelt Holiday Tale with Laughs and Love

Three Wiser Men and a Boy is a delightful sequel that perfectly captures the magic of Christmas with humor, heartfelt moments, and family drama. The Brenner brothers' chaotic journey to save a school play is filled with laughs, while their bond showcases the true essence of the holidays. Paul Campbell, Tyler Hynes, and Andrew Walker shine in their roles, delivering performances that feel authentic and relatable. The subplot about their mother's new romance adds emotional depth and unexpected comedy. From festive musical scenes to touching family moments, this film offers something for everyone. It's a holiday treat that's perfect for the whole family. Want to know why it's become a Hallmark favorite?

Confused

6.6 stars.

I feel like this is a confused film. It's as if it's trying to continue from where the last one left off, while trying to convince us that five years have elapsed. However, I don't feel familiar with the brothers or the story at all. It feels foreign.

When I saw the first one, I felt similar, as if it was too silly with no plot. But I rewatched and it was better. I'm not sure if I have to watch this one again for it to improve, but I'm not feeling up to the challenge at this point. I have a gut feeling it is not going to get any better.

The plot is weak. And the way they orchestrate this children's Christmas play is strange. Would grown men actually be so inept? I'm watching three adult men bumble like adolescents. I thought they grew up by now. They actually regressed.

The story doesn't flow and contains some exquisitely slow moments. It's hard to blow a movie with so many great actors.

Slightly wiser, but not by much

Five-ish years have passed since we last had the Brenner brother's making us laugh in Three Wisemen and a Baby. Now, the baby is a kindergarten boy starring in his school's play, which serves as the linchpin of this sequel that bests its predecessor, but not by leaps and bounds.

I'm a sucker for Paul Campbell movies, because I expect each to be as good as the 2021 film he wrote, An Unexpected Christmas, which is one of my favorites. Christmas by Starlight in 2020 was solid as well. Campbell wrote this one too, again with Kimberley Sustad.

Tyler Hynes is our bad boy gamer, Taylor. Andrew W. Walker is our dad, Luke. Campbell plays Stephan, our neurotic author/therapist.

I'm comfortable giving this movie a passing grade, but mostly for the writing and acting, not plot or emotional drive. It's not funny enough to be a comedy, but not serious enough to be dramatic. I like seeing this family together, even if it all seems a little unnecessary.

We don't have a single love story, but rather a family tale with multiple threads. Mom has a new man. Taylor is smitten with his female clone, Caroline. Paul struggles to commit to his long-time girlfriend. Luke, continues to learn about being a parent.

One lasting storyline that I would just love to see in other movies is the royalty free, no trademark play, The Grump. Don't call it the Grinch, because they didn't pay for those rights. It's the Grump, in Grumptown, complete with songs and rhymes. Pretty clever.

Measuring Christmas Magic: Paint by numbers magic, but it's certainly a Christmas movie.

Cast Kudos: Kimberley Sustad, in an on the nose cameo, discussing how difficult it is to do two shows one year after the last. Hmm, what exactly are we hinting at Kimberley?

Alternative Movie titles: The Brenner boys are back; Grumptown the Musical.

A step down

Two years ago Hallmark put three of their regular Christmas romance actors together in one movie as an odd set of brothers, and the formula meshed. We found the movie to be inventive and surprising, and Tyler Hines stole the show with his understated performance but impeccable comic timing.

Two years later the story has moved five years in the future, and sadly, this story just tried to do too much. That made the presentation fractured, with not enough weight on any of the story elements to really give them the time and detail they deserved.

The objection to the mother's new paramour was trite. Tyler Hines' romance was fun, but we got too little of it. The Christmas show was amusing, but again, too little to really get to know the kids involved.

This needed to be two or three movies to do justice to everything they tried to bring across, but only delivered the "lite" versions.

It won't be a repeat watch for us.

Actually a good movie...

I have to say that I wasn't exactly harboring the biggest of expectations to the 2024 Hallmark movie "Three Wiser Men and a Boy" when I sat down to watch it. Why? Well, I assumed that it would be a generic Hallmark Christmas movie. But since I had never heard about it, and this being the season, of course I opted to check out the movie and give it a fair chance.

Writers Paul Campbell, Kimberley Sustad and Russell Hainline put together a fair enough script and storyline. It was not your average over-the-top sugarcoated sappy Christmas dribble that you usually get from Hallmark. There is actually more substance to it than just that. Sure, there is some sappy Christmas elements in here, but "Three Wiser Men and a Boy" was more than just a an average and generic Christmas movie.

I was only familiar with two performers on the cast list, and that was Christopher Shyer and Margaret Colin. However, I will say that the three leading actors Andrew W. Walker, Paul Campbell and Tyler Hynes definitely carried the movie nicely. It should be noted that the acting performances in the movie were good.

"Three Wiser Men and a Boy" is not going to become a returning Christmas classic in my household, but it definitely was an entertaining enough movie. And if you enjoy Christmas movies, then you should check out what director Terry Ingram has to offer.

My rating of "Three Wiser Men and a Boy" lands on a six out of ten stars.

I missed Three Wise Men and a Baby and now think I better go back and watch it.

This is a comedy and at times a little awkward...but in part I think that is what makes it a cute family friendly Hallmark holiday film. This story reunites the cast from 2022's Three Wise Men and a Baby...the three brothers Luke (Andrew W. Walker), Taylor (Tyler Hynes), and Stephan (Paul Campbell), their mother Barbara (Margaret Colin) and Luke's son Thomas. The cast is wonderful and clearly has fun working together which is a large part of the charm in this comedy about brotherly rivalry, family, and being their for one another.

The mom introduces the boys to her new boyfriend...the seemingly perfect pastor Roy (Christopher Shyer), which is one cause the three brothers can unite on...getting rid of Roy. And Luke asks for some help with his son Thomas as he is temporarily single parenting while his wife is out of town. This includes help bringing snacks to Thomas' play practice that ends in a school disaster and the three brothers having to be in charge of rescuing the school's Christmas show which is a play on the Grinch Who Stole Christmas called The Grump.

Lots of holiday sets and clean fun, this film surprised and delighted me in the best way. If you are looking for a lighthearted family friendly hallmark holiday film...this might just be it.

worthy sequel

Nicely written again by Paul Campbell and Kimberley Sustad, along with Russell Hainline, the brothers are back along with most of the cast from the first "Three Men" movie. Everyone is excellent here - even the outcast kids who are cute and funny without being overbearing.

The standouts are Paul Campbell and Fiona Vroom as the anxiety ridden couple, Stephan and Susie, and Margaret Colin as the brothers' mother, Barbara. Campbell has a particularly hilarious scene when he has to sit down to dinner with Barbara'a new boyfriend and his interactions with Susie are quite endearing as they both struggle with their emotions. Colin's Barbara is still direct and matter-of-fact yet sweet and good-hearted. Colin excels in this role and her characterization of Barbara may be the best mother ever in a Hallmark Christmas movie. Who wouldn't want a Mom like her ? The producers and director had the good sense to feature many of same locales and sets as in the first movie, which provides some nice continuity so you really feel like you are re-visiting this family. It may not be as perfect as the first movie, but It is definitely a worthy sequel - and it just makes you want to see more of this cast and their characters. A third one would be very welcome. They just have a way of really putting you in the Christmas spirit.

LOVED!

This was such a cute movie, I enjoyed it throughout. I will admit I didn't care for the first one, this one however was adorable. These three actors, AW, PC and TH have great chemistry together, I like the fact they didn't make TH so over the top grouchy, grumpy and goth looking, he had real redeeming qualities!

I also loved the Mom and her relationship with her boys. Each brother has his own quirks, insecurities and lovable attributes which brought a nice level of authenticity to the film. I also enjoyed the mom wanting to find her way in the world, have a second chance at love but at the same time wanted to make sure her boys understood where she was coming from, that she loved them and their feelings mattered to her, excellent acting here! The little boy was also very adorable! Congratulations to Kimberley Sustad (one of my favorites), Paul Campbell and Russell Hainline as the writers, great job!

Finally. A great sequel.

Sequels are tough.

There have been many Hallmark movies whose sequels have not worked well, but this one was awesome and didn't disappoint.

The brother's dynamic is hilarious. It's great to see their characters evolve. However, Taylor is still a bit of a dumpster fire.

Thomas is just too cute. The scene in the blanket fort between him and Taylor was just too sweet. Thomas's interaction with everyone was significant.

I love that Paul Campbell and Kimberly Sustad wrote this one as well. They rock at it. I adore every movie they have written.

This sequel hit all the right notes, and I hope there is a wedding next.

Not Up To Snuff

From the times Three Men and a Baby was released, this theme has been way over used with the same plot and only a slightly different twist. And, the only thing I can say is what a waste of three talented male actors to be acting in such a cheesy, over done theme. Is there no better writers and themes available? No one would consider remaking classic movies with a slight change, rename it and expect it to be a hit. Understanding all movies cannot be premium classics, writing should be at least based on a novel concept at its core. Grown men sniping at each other like 16 year olds? The whole thing was cheesy!

A holiday worthy movie

I've been a grump lately with very little options to watch this Christmas. I ended up rewatching Klaus coz I feel like there's not much family Christmas story this year since most movies are trying so hard to be edgy and different that they mostly lost the plot on what it takes to be a Christmas story.

This movie is such a heartwarming holiday watched. It is simple, yet it showcases what it means to be a human and flawed. It also showcases the importance of family and how to be accepting of change in our lives given that change is the only thing that's constant whether that change happened very slowly or suddenly. We have to learn how to adapt and accept things as they be.

Okay, that's too dramatic. But yeah, it's a great movie to watch if you are looking for something that will make you smile this Christmas.

Not your Typical Hallmark Movie

The story was okay, but it was the brotherly interactions and the relationship with their mom that really shine. There is really only one romantic storyline and it's really downplayed. The acting was top notch, even the kids seemed more realistic. Look, they churn these movies out quickly, usually in a few weeks, so there's isn't a lot to differentiate them. Sometimes the actor(s) make a difference, sometimes it's the story. For me, it was the actors and the writing, which was a cut above the usual for these type of movies. Love that this was something different. Pleasantly surprised that it was well done too.

TERRIBLE MOVIE

Don't know why I've given it 2 stars. What a waste of a movie.

What exactly point is the writer trying to get across.

Most Hallmark movies touch all of our hearts with the warm, colorful stories being shared.

The gentalmen actors are brilliant in their own movies. The first sequel the brothers got along. This episode was immature, a waste of time, and ridiculous.

The constant chaos and arguments get old and aren't sending positive energies to the children.

Fire Captains are leaders and always on top of all situations.

In this movie, what an embarrassment to the role in this movie.

This movie, in my opinion, is not worthy of any awards.

A pretty decent sequel

It is never easy to follow up a successful movie with a sequel - a fact that is hilariously alluded to in an inside joke by the cowriters Paul Campbell & Kimberly Susted after the kids' musical. But this movie does a pretty good job.

First, the most positive aspects. They really nailed the casting of the most important new character, Thomas (the "boy" in the title). He did a great job, as did the other kids who had smaller parts.

I appreciate the 4 main actors, the 3 sons and their mother, although some other reviewers' comments about the brothers acting annoyingly immaturely are definitely valid.

And I have to end with a comment that applies to almost all Hallmark movies, not just this one. They depict the female leads as intelligent, accomplished women, yet they all fret about: "When is Johnny gong to propose?" It's the 21st century, people! Women can plan their futures without waiting around for someone else to decide when it's time to get married. I would think couples should be planning their future life together, rather than one half of the couple having to wait for the other person to decide the time is right, but Hallmark seems unable to let go of the idea that "the man proposing on one knee" is the height of romance. Or maybe they think that's what their audience wants, and for some segment of the audience, it's probably true. But for those who are younger, and for the more accomplished women, the most romantic man might be the one who plans their futures WITH his partner, rather than deciding on his own when it's time to discuss marriage. Just a thought, radical as it may be.

Older - Yes. Wiser?

Three Wiser Men And A Boy (2) (2024) -

Although this one was entertaining on its own, I did feel that it made far more sense because I'd already seen 'Three Wise Men And A Baby' (2022), an homage to 'Three Men And A Baby' (1987) but set at Christmas.

As a sequel though it was pleasantly surprising. A lot of the Made For TV film follow on's are usually all about weddings or getting pregnant so having that all mostly out of the way was a good way to start this one and broach a new take on things, without making it a repeat of its predecessor.

With the characters already established, it was easy to jump right in and for them to be developed further, mostly in a positive and fun way.

As with the first film Paul Campbell was the weaker link in his role of Stephan, but his character was a fair balance for the other two. I supposed that his arc was the darker, more thoughtful one with his mental health struggles still prevalent from the first film. I still thought that he should have been a gay character though, especially as he came across that way so much. His issues with his girlfriend would have made a lot of sense in that regard too.

Tyler Hines as Taylor however was very cool and funny. His romance seemed to take on the focus this time, because Andrew W. Walker as Luke had achieved his in the previous story.

Tyler's character was charming and cute, suave and very sexy and I liked Caroline (Erin Karpluk) playing opposite him as an appropriate match for his own personality. I definitely associated with his character the most for what he was going through, although I'm neither suave nor cute. I still swore that he and Charlie Sheen had been separated at birth though.

Andrew W. Walker has always and will always be sexy. I did feel that he should have played the straight brother. I don't mean the opposite of Gay, but the one that didn't do the jokes so much, just to let Tyler and Paul deliver the laughs more prominently.

The story followed what happened when the three fellas were left alone to look after Luke's adopted son Thomas (Miles Marthaller) and were given responsibility for the school play in the process (I don't think it turned out to be his biological son in the last one?).

Along the way they were confronted by the fact that their Mum Barbara (Margaret Colin) had been seeing a new man and wanted to introduce them to him, which didn't go down too well.

Their reaction to that was a bit annoying, but I got over it because the rest worked nicely enough. That older parent with a new partner thing seems to be a new idea that these films are using a lot at the moment and it does put a dampener on the behaviour of what would otherwise be nice characters.

I do have to say that Thomas was a very good character, I couldn't help but like the kid and Miles was great in that role, but there was no way that he and the other kids would have been abled to learn a brand new play in such a short time.

What I did also like about this one though was that it was deliberately funny. It wasn't just broken bits of jokes or silly characters. The humour was carefully thought out and it had a clear objective to be a comedy with heart and not a romance with comedic, unbelievable elements or characters, like a silly boss or numpty of a best friend. Everyone was aware that the film was meant to be laughed at.

And I loved the idea to reprise the 'Sugar Plum' dance from the previous film. I would have liked more of that skit though, because those three actors being idiots in that way was funny. A digression from what they had mostly done before.

I will definitely watch this one again. It was a sequel that the producers and cast should be proud of.

7.87/10.
