Excellent Horror Anthology/Fun

This is an anthology collection of stories, helmed by 5 talented indie directors that really captures the fun of the horror genre. I was reminded "Creepshow" as far as the tone there is even one story ("Rest Stop", I think) based on a short story by Stephen King. Directors Alex Montilla, Scotch Rutherford, Ryan Shoney, Cameron Schwartz, and Aaron McJames really pull out all of the stops, with the result that there is something here for everyone. Movie utilizes a radio station bookending device that works to seamlessly weave together the various stories. Definitely check this one out, you will not be disappointed!

A super fun horror/comedy indie anthology!

"Pulp Modern: Die Laughing" centers around a radio show host who tells a bunch of tales of horror mixed with comedy: A hilarious twist on the classic slasher, an evil mirror, a disgruntled worker on the path to revenge, an evil instigating bird, and a cheating husband.

Much like the vibe of "Tales from the Crypt" from back in the day, this is simply a fun, twisted indie film that will scare you and make you laugh at all the right times. I especially enjoyed the first story which literally made me laugh out loud, and the final story ends with a really cool, unexpected twist. If you enjoy anthology horror films that sprinkles in some of that much needed humor, this is definitely for you!

A breezy entertaining anthology

Alec Cizak's Pulp Modern: Die Laughing is a pretty entertaining horror anthology. It has a nice mix up of horror movie genres, we get an amusing take on a slasher movie where its almost impossible to kill the killer, a darkly comedic story about a mirror connecting to hell, and a fun look at why you should never commit adultery. I think the stories themselves are put together nicely and I can really appreciate the use of practical effects over CGI (which is here and for the most part works though there are some rough sections). I like the idea of having this told to us as various stories in a pulp magazine that a radio DJ is reading who also is having their own horror experience. I wish certain things had tied together a bit better but what we get is a breezy fun time. I recommend it if you are looking to get your horror fix with something new.

Solid horror movie

Reminded me a lot of 1980s movies like Creepshow and Nightmares. Five stories--a slasher, a possessed mirror, a guy who's bullied gets revenge, a foul-mouthed bird, and a wife with curious culinary tendencies. It's all held together by the story of a DJ getting harassed and stalked while reading the magazine this movie is apparently based on. Will definitely have to buy a copy of the magazine and see if it's as good as the movie. The individual stories are made by different writers and directors. The whole thing comes together in the end. There is humor throughout, the first and fourth stories being the funniest. Not a bad way to spend an evening.

Great theme tune and fun indie anthology

A combination of 80s rock and horror movies is my idea of a fun night in so this was my idea of a nice night in.

It is a combination of multiple films instead of one big one but there is a framing narrative with a particuarly charming DJ.

For those not familiar with the Pulp Modern series of books they look line a fun read. Being based away from the USA I hadn't heard of them before but I really dug the different types of stories that were being told.

Bonus points for the opening song and story which I particuarly liked. One of my pet peeves with Halloween was that Mike Myers was basically invincible, a weird thing to be annoyed about but I need my slashers to be based around the idea that you can beat them in the end.

Fun Horror Anthology

I enjoyed watching Pulp Modern, and even more surprisingly - to me at least - so did my wife, who typically won't watch horror films. Five shorts, each very well done, each are probably the best ways to experience horror films these days. I enjoy a good scary movie, but sadly, they are few and far between. This one does have some laughs as advertised, but more importantly, uses character actors they are anything but typical. In fact, many are so perfectly cast, I wondered "where did they find these performers?" While horror anthologies like Tales from the Crypt come to mind, I think this one's vibe is actually closer to "Tales from the Dark Side". The pace is snappy, direction tight, writing good, and the production values exceed what many lower-budget films offer. And it has a malevolent cockatiel! Check this one out, you'll enjoy yourself!

Anthology That Leaves You Screaming and Chuckling

"Pulp Modern: Die Laughing" is a cinematic experience that successfully marries the macabre with the mirthful, providing an anthology that is as entertaining as it is unsettling. Directed by an ensemble of talented filmmakers including Aaron McJames, Scotch Rutherford, Cameron Schwartz, Ryan Shovey, and Alex Montilla, this film dives deep into the realms of horror and dark comedy, presenting five distinct tales of malice and deceit, each more gripping than the last.

The movie's narrative framework is ingeniously constructed around Mr. C, an adulterous L. A. Deejay portrayed with remarkable flair by Alexander Cicak. Mr. C, known for his legendary fornication and sharp wit, serves as the perfect host, spinning tales that traverse the darker corridors of human nature and supernatural occurrences. His charismatic and sardonic presence binds the anthology together, creating a cohesive thread through the disparate stories.

Each segment of "Pulp Modern: Die Laughing" explores a unique facet of horror, all while maintaining a darkly comedic undertone. The film opens with a millennial slasher story, a modern take on the classic genre, infused with contemporary anxieties and social commentary. The narrative is both terrifying and reflective, capturing the essence of youthful dread in a technology-driven society.

Next, the anthology delves into the supernatural with a tale centered on a demonic mirror. This segment is a masterclass in building tension and suspense, using the reflective surface as a portal to the unknown. The horror is palpable, yet it is interspersed with moments of dark humor that provide a welcome relief, showcasing the directors' adeptness at balancing fear with laughter.

One of the standout stories involves the dark half of a literary doomsayer, a character inspired by the rich tradition of pulp fiction. This narrative is particularly noteworthy for its complex characterization and psychological depth. It explores themes of identity, creation, and destruction, drawing the audience into a cerebral horror that lingers long after the credits roll.

The anthology takes a bizarre and unexpectedly hilarious turn with the inclusion of a satanic parrot. This segment is a testament to the film's willingness to embrace the absurd and the outrageous. The parrot, with its eerie mimicry and malevolent intelligence, becomes a symbol of unpredictable horror, all the while eliciting genuine laughs through its outrageous antics and the chaos it unleashes.

The final tale in the anthology deals with a vengeful wife scorned, a narrative that taps into primal fears and the darkest aspects of human relationships. This segment is a powerful commentary on betrayal and retribution, delivering a chilling yet satisfyingly cathartic conclusion to the film. The horror is grounded in real emotional stakes, making it one of the most relatable and impactful stories of the collection.

"Pulp Modern: Die Laughing" is not just a horror-comedy anthology; it is a homage to the enduring legacy of pulp fiction. Featuring adaptations of works by renowned authors such as Stephen King, Nicole Bird, and Alec Cizak, the film pays tribute to the genre's roots while pushing its boundaries. The screenplay, co-written by Alexander Cicak and the directing team, is sharp, witty, and unflinchingly dark, capturing the essence of the source material while injecting fresh perspectives.

The production quality is top-notch, with each director bringing their unique visual style and storytelling sensibilities to the table. The cinematography is evocative, the special effects are impressive, and the sound design is meticulously crafted to enhance the overall experience. The ensemble cast, including standout performances by Traycee King, Randy Havens, and Amy Letcher, delivers with commendable dedication and skill, breathing life into the eclectic array of characters.

In conclusion, "Pulp Modern: Die Laughing" is a must-watch for fans of horror and dark comedy. It is a film that challenges, entertains, and ultimately leaves you with a sense of uneasy satisfaction. Whether you're a longtime aficionado of pulp fiction or a newcomer to the genre, this anthology is bound to leave a lasting impression, making you laugh even as it sends shivers down your spine.

Ripe for a series

Horrific fun, with an appropriate indie vibe. It's an anthology, just like the long-running digest fiction magazine it's based on. The unifying element is the host of a late night radio show, Mr. C, who queues up each new story. (Incidentally, Mr. C really is a radio host.) The film is loaded with easter eggs if you're into Pulp Modern and its brethren, like the now defunct Switchblade magazine. (Note Mr. C's letter opener.) Great fun, with clever plotting, solid direction, fine performances, and remarkably good production values. Okay, now let's see one of the streaming services sign these guys up for a series!

Bring back the blood and guts!

"Pulp Modern: Die Laughing" is a thrilling and darkly comedic anthology that brings the gritty essence of the iconic pulp magazines to life. Adulterous L. A. Deejay Mr. C spins five mesmerizing tales of malice and deceit: a millennial slasher, a demonic mirror, the dark half of a literary doomsayer, a satanic parrot, and a vengeful wife scorned. Featuring film adaptations of works by Stephen King, Nicole Bird, and Alec Cizak, this movie is a must-watch for fans of horror and pulp fiction alike.

I found this film to be a nostalgic yet refreshing homage. The series of short stories strung together reminded me of the best of the 80s horror genre, with each segment diving deep into what makes these tales so compelling. "Pulp Modern: Die Laughing" is filled with all the gore, blood, and mayhem you could hope for, while also mixing in some truly hilarious jokes that provide a twisted sense of humor.

This film feels like a darker, edgier version of "The Twilight Zone," where each story keeps you on the edge of your seat and eager for more. The seamless blend of horror and comedy creates an engaging and unforgettable experience. If you're a fan of pulp fiction, horror, or just love a good anthology, "Pulp Modern: Die Laughing" is right up your alley. Don't miss out on this wild ride!

A fun horror anthology with a great campy vibe

Ever since growing up with shows like Tales from the Crypt and Creepshow, I've been a sucker for anthology horror films. The opening short is a familiar, yet playful deconstruction of the unstoppable killer of horror's past. It was a fun and campy beginning to set the stage for this anthology, but each story leans in a different direction, giving the entire anthology a fresh feeling. Each of the five stories had different directors/writers, but they all did a fantastic job of making their stories unique but cinematically coherent. If you enjoy anthology horrors, you will have a great time enjoying this collection of films.

hilariously scary

"Pulp Modern" is a tantalizing anthology that dives deep into the dark allure of underground pulp fiction, set against the chaotic backdrop of Los Angeles and woven together by the enigmatic DJ Mr. C. This film masterfully adapts works by Stephen King, Nicole Bird, and Alec Cizak, offering a thrilling journey through five tales of horror and deceit: a millennial slasher that refreshes the classic genre, a haunting demonic mirror that explores psychological terror, the dark half of a literary doomsayer delving into madness, a bizarre yet compelling story of a satanic parrot, and a vengeful wife scorned that delivers a raw, visceral punch. Each segment, distinct yet cohesively tied by Mr. C's presence, encapsulates the gritty aesthetic and primal emotions that make pulp fiction so enduringly appealing.

Over-the-top horror crazy fun

Pulp Modern, Die Laughing is an anthology that is completely gonzo. Tightly scripted, well-shot, and deftly edited, this collection of over-the-top horror tales is a crazy fun romp that keeps you entertained from start to finish.

While it certainly leans into the gross and grotesque, it does so in a playful and fun manner, making the experience enjoyable rather than off-putting. The production values are impressive, and the visual feast is a testament to the exceptional pandering to the pulp genre, reminiscent of Creepshow.

As someone who isn't typically a fan of this genre, I found myself surprisingly delighted by this anthology. The first segment, a Wile E. Coyote-style horror, is priceless and sets the tone for the wild ride that follows.

Overall, Pulp Modern, Die Laughing is a blast and a must-watch for anyone who appreciates high-energy, well-crafted horror with a playful twist. Even if you're not usually a fan of this genre, this anthology might just win you over with its charm and creativity.

Hilarious and brutal horror comedy

Pulp Modern die laughing is (in case you haven't guessed) a comedy anthology of five stories told by five writers and directors. The story is connected by seasoned radio DJ mister Cee (Alexander Cicak)

A nameless female protagonist does battle with a malevolent Friday the 13th Jason entity using every kind of conceivable weapon and comedic one liner she can think of- a vane selfish young man mistakenly buys a mirror which serves as a portal to hell. A disgruntled university professor and crime author finds his insecurities manifesting in murderous rage. A talking bird sets off an irreversible chain of murderous events a and adulterer finds himself at the receiving end of his wife's vengeance.

Theres no good guys in this anthology. Just a bunch of self centred morally compromised people from all walks of life in over their heads.

With a premise like Pulp Modern with so many directors there was a lot that could go wrong but it remains consistent from beginning to end with all aspects- the stories-the performances-the cinematography and the editing.

The film proudly wears its Troma entertainment style B movie influences on its sleeve It walks a fine line between horror and humour and you can tell the crew had a great time making it as it shines on the screen.

I've watched many indie films in the last year and Pulp Modern is by far the most well polished!

A fun horror anthology

If you like horror, quirky and comedy then this is for you. There are several stories that will have you laughing out loud and wondering what outrageous story is coming next. Much like "Tales from The Crypt" this is a fun, twisted, and gory anthology that centers around a radio host that plays none other than classical music.

Well written, well acted, well told stories that are definitely worth a watch especially now that spooky season is upon us.

It's entertaining, outrageous, and the set design, cinematography and editing is more than expected. It will definitely keep you entertained from start to finish.

A Thrilling blend of dark humor and horror

I recently watched Pulp Modern: Die Laughing and was thoroughly entertained by this wild horror anthology. The film is a thrilling blend of dark humor and horror, reminiscent of classic 80s anthologies like Tales from the Crypt. Each of the five stories is unique, delivering a mix of scares and laughs, with standout moments like a satanic parrot and a demonic mirror that taps into psychological horror. The framing narrative, led by the charismatic DJ Mr. C, ties everything together perfectly, making it a cohesive and engaging experience. Even if you're not usually a fan of anthologies, this one is worth checking out for its creativity and fun factor.

Unique and Impressive Horror

Pulp Modern: Die Laughing is an impressive horror film. It is very unique in it's format, which is basically several different stores tied together by a radio DJ who plays classical music. I think the thing that impressed me most about this film was the direction, and the cinematography. You usually don't see film directing and camera movement this slick in indie movies like this. There were shots and seamless camera moves in this film that were so polished, and smooth that I was reminded of the movies of David Fincher. The talking parrot was also a unique story device. And the soundtrack was fantastic.

5 scares in 1

I just watched the movie PULP MODERN: DIE LAUGHING.

The movie has a lot of strong scenes that I enjoyed watching and were very comical.

The movie is directed by Alex Montilla, Scotch Rutherford, Ryan Shoney, Cameron Schwartz, and Aaron McJames.

This horror movie keeps you laughing with 5 scary/funny stories in one!

The movie has fun dialogue and drama and funny scenes. It was also shot in a very good way with many cool scenes to see and experience. The production value is quite high! All 5 storylines pull you in many directions as you're watching these movies. I thought the lead actors all had great onscreen chemistry- they were great together. The sets are great for an indie movie. I look forward to what these directors and filmmakers can achieve in their upcoming bright careers! Check this movie (movies) out! You'll remember it! Lol Scary and funny!

An immensely fun and likable anthology

Hosting a new radio show, a DJ tries to carry on his usual programming while dealing with a series of strange gifts.

The Good Stor(ies): Overkill-Heading out for a party in the woods, a group of friends find themselves stalked by an unstoppable killer with hilarious results. This was a fantastic way to get this one started. The main setup here is the perfect chance for this one to follow through a traditional series of slasher victim tropes as everyone is quickly introduced and given the traits that allow for a solid series of interactions between them and the fabled killer appearing to start killing them off. The resulting final girl chase and subsequent attempts to deal with the unstoppable killer generate some gut-busting laughs dealing with the situation. Dutifully employing the trope about the killer's unstoppable and indestructible nature, the increasingly exasperated survivor trying to pull off the final killing blow provides enough gore and solid fun to be a real winner.

Mirrored-After receiving a strange mirror for a package, a man is suddenly confronted by a demonic version of himself that disrupts his life. Overall, this was pretty fun but it has some issues with it. The central setup comes off well enough and the nonchalance of having to live with such a device gives this a fantastically over-the-top comedic bent that forces the kind of tactics to deal with everything going on in his life even without a demonic version of himself at play who taunts and torments him. That there's never any real threat here with the brevity keeping this one from going any further than introducing the story and going from there, this one still has enough fun to be likable overall.

Sloppy Seconds-Trying to get away to his mistress, a man has to endure a family dinner with his wife before that can happen. This was a fairly solid and likable segment to end this one on. The whole idea is a solid enough concept which works nicely enough with the series of interactions between the two playing that up which have a quirky sensibility to it all that hides the truth. The whole punchline to this one is fun enough with some great gore and a few solid surprises setup along the way, which makes for a likable time over it's minor drawback in being so rushed some of these factors that it's sometimes hard to find a chance to take them in as it could've used some more time to let this breathe a bit.

Sloppy Seconds-Trying to get away to his mistress, a man has to endure a family dinner with his wife before that can happen. This was a fairly solid and likable segment to end this one on. The Bad Stor(ies): Rest Stop-Trying to stay in his boss' good graces, a teacher finds his work unappreciated to the point that he feels compelled to turn into his literary creation. Overall, this one might come off more as a misfire than intended. The main setup just doesn't have much going for it in terms of genre material as nothing about him is all that interesting, we get no real introduction to him to figure out what's going on, and nothing makes any sense. We're only supposed to care about him because his life is so terrible but without any context it's hard to care as things go on to where he takes matters into his own hands incorporating the work of his novel. This comes off nicely enough but it's too little too late at this point.

Cocky-Living with his mother, a man's pet parrot becomes a constant torment when the creature starts to unleash its dark side. This one comes off nicely enough but it does serve a major overall flaw. The fact that the central premise is genuinely cheesy and silly makes for a great comedic touch as the constant interactions with the creature and its relentless swearing offer up some great ideas about what's going on. However, at that point, it soon becomes obvious that this is a one-note joke stretched out far beyond its usefulness or creativity and it seems rather obvious in how aimless it moves to one contrived means of getting it to swear aggressively that it starts to feel repetitive overall.

Vinyl Tap-Hosting a new radio show, a DJ tries to carry on his usual programming while dealing with a series of strange gifts. Overall, this was a solid enough wraparound that has some issues. As a means of introducing the stories by having the interludes setup up the next story as the series of gifts spark conversation with the fanatic who left them for him which serves well enough for doing that kind of story. A lot of these interactions go nowhere, though, and there's an immensely unsatisfying payoff to everything, making this a somewhat odd series of interactions as it has a nice enough setup but ends up being somewhat underwhelming.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.

Dig anthology horrors, you gonna have a blast with this collection!

Since I was a little shorty watching Tales from the Crypt and Creepshow, I've always been down with anthology horror flicks, you get me? The first story in this one hits like a classic, breaking down that unstoppable killer vibe from back in the day, but with a twist. It's a fun, campy start that sets the scene right for the whole anthology. Each story in this mix takes its own path, giving the whole movie a fresh and dope feel. If you dig anthology horrors, you gonna have a blast with this collection, no doubt. So grab some popcorn with your favorite beverage and check out Pulp Modern: Die Laughing.

An awesome anthology film!!

I love combining horror and comedy. And this engaging and comedic anthology film hits it out of the park! No spoilers but there are some really unique and scary elements. A fun film that's like a contemporary Tales from the Crypt!

Some great plot twists in this well paced feature. I was alternately scared and then found myself laughing at the comedy elements. From slashers to evil household items to revenge you're going to find all of this. Great camera work and effects work. Reminds me a bit of Evil Dead also!

I'm throwing a horror film party and I'm definitely scheduling this film as part of our evening! Watch it!!

Really fun!

One of the great things about this movie is, if you're a big horror fan, there's plenty of great horror moments to enjoy. But if you're more of a mild horror fan like me, you can still get into this film, because it's both fun and funny. Blood and gore, yes. But so amusingly done, you can't help but laugh. I liked every segment of the movie, and just had fun with it from beginning to end. I think the filmmakers and actors had fun making it, too. And their enthusiasm is contagious. So even if you're not a horror devote, you might still find yourself having a great time. Just a really fun and satisfying film!

Fun mix of horror and comedy!

Pulp Modern: Die Laughing is a comedic horror anthology film. The opening scene pulled me in and got me intrigued. The comic strip inspiration is a really great addition as well! I loved the introductory credit sequence at the beginning. I appreciate the way the radio DJ tells the stories, weaving them all together in an expert balance of comedy and horror to create a fun feature-length viewing experience! Such a good way to tell a "frame tale." I really appreciated all the stories that were told here. The visuals, special effects, and acting were all wonderful, too! Very well done to all of the filmmakers!

A lovely dark surprise

Pulp Modern: Die Laughing is an anthology flick based on a graphic novel, and is one of the most delightful surprises I've come across this year. We're firmly in comedy/horror territory, and the five stories here each have something fun, dark or interesting to offer. My personal favourite is 'Cocky', in which a sweary parrot decides to crank things up a notch and begins actively manipulating the people around him to do increasing amounts of harm to one another. It's ridiculous, dark and thoroughly entertaining, with terrific performances and a certain bracing bleakness to it that I dug immensely. Elsewhere in the anthology we have an adaptation of Stephen King's 'Rest Stop', which is beautifully shot and works extremely well, a slasher parody entitled 'Overkill' which is great fun, a 'demon in the mirror' short called 'Mirrored' which throws in some memorable visuals and the final tale 'Sloppy Seconds' which, even if you might guess where it's going relatively early in proceedings still delivers a great deal of fun getting to the inevitably nasty conclusion. This is a cracking anthology, beautifully executed.
