Matthew Rhys (Nile Jarvis) thought at first he was being offered the part of Agent Brian Abbott (played by David Lyons). It came as a shock for him to be cast in the lead role, with him saying: "I don't get offered these kinds of parts".

Claire Danes (Aggie Wiggs) and Matthew Rhys (Nile Jarvis) did not know what would happen in the finale when filming began. They were not given scripts until later - even with Danes being an Executive Producer on the series.

Matthew Rhys (Nile Jarvis) read a lot of books to research the psychopathy of his character. Claire Danes (Aggie Wiggs) recommended "The Journalist and the Murderer" (1990). Rhys also read the Psychopath Test (2011), and afterwards thought he was a psychopath.
