I really want to like the GAC movies, but...

I agree with others that this is too much like an Aurora Teagarden movie (minus Marilu Henner).

But my real issue is Willing Suspension of Disbelief. This movie supposedly takes place somewhere in Texas, but is so obviously filmed elsewhere (Hello, British Columbia) that I just couldn't go with it.

Also, as with other GAC movies, there's a lack of "oomph". There needs to be more emotion and energy. I am not sure why this is so consistent across all their efforts. I wish they'd show more zip.

Candace is cute, the mystery is okay, the production values adequate, the cast is trying, but...nope.

Better luck next time!

Hoping the next one is an improvement

I haven't read the book to know how close this storyline is to it, but the dialogue and acting are shoddy The setting is a fictional town in Texas. Yet, not a single person has a Texan drawl or twang. They do, however, have plenty of the interesting and quirky southern sayings like, "You're as stubborn as a mule with his heel caught in a stump."

In my opinion, the writer(s) could have done better. I was able to immediately figure out who the killer was, which made for a boring movie. It also was a disappointment as it came across as a wannabe mix of Hallmark's Aurora Teagarden Mystery and Mystery 101. Hopefully, the next one is better; otherwise, it's peace out GAF."

Wannabe Hailee Dean Movie

I feel like they were trying to differentiate this character from Aurora Teagarden. You know, a real criminologist versus an amateur sleuth. But one of the things that made the Aurora movies great was the supporting characters.

I just never believed the actor playing her brother as the sheriff. Although I did like the brother and sister dynamics between the two of them. Maybe he needs a demotion so a stronger sheriff can come on board.

The love interest character is handsome but didn't really seem like a good match for someone who had worked for the Chicago police department. I didn't buy their connection.

I always like Cameron so I will wait to see future episodes, but if this movie plays at the same time as an Aurora movie, I'm watching Aurora.

Rough start but promising

I haven't read the books, and I know that a new series requires dialogue that sets up to explain a lot of relationships and characters quickly. But this dialogue was rough. The interaction between Ainsley and the other booth-owners at the artist shop is very promising! But the interaction between her and her brother is flat and cheesy. They have a great opportunity there to make a little sibling banter or warmth so I hope that improves. The storyline was fine. Had enough suspects. It was a little weird that the wine owners were losing tons of money but didn't know how.

Ainsley did overstep quite a few legal boundaries inserting herself which as a criminologist she wouldn't have, but it was a catalyst in the story so necessary and easy to overlook :) We all know it's not a true crime type drama, it's a feel good mystery :) But the fact that she had to pepper in that she's too small to do harm or too little to make an impact twice and then that she is into fitness not sports three different times was weird.

Acting was fine, setting was pretty, plot worked, hopefully by the 2nd or 3rd movie they will have their groove! I'm looking forward to the rest of this series!

Ro Teagarden rides again.

Having read all of the Teagarden mysteries. When they were turned into TV movies. I was quite excited. Unfortunately Candace Cameron Bure had other ideas.

She created a totally vacuous character. Unlike Teagarden in the books. Who continually evolves with each successive adventure. Bure set to defile the character and make her very unlikeable.

She always has to be right. She tampers with police evidence. She obstructs police enquiries. { I could not fathom why she was not arrested at least once ? } And is dangerous and destructive to all around her. With a ' friend' like her, you'd need no enemies.

Another observation is that the Teagarden of the novels, although chaste never appears sexually repressive unlike the Bure ' Teagarden ' Now I have not read any of the Ainsley McGregor books. But I will wager the Bure ' Mc Gregor ' is once again a fiction of her perverted imagination.

And since she is now pushing fifty. Isn't it about time she dropped the teenage character who resembles a ' gerbil on steroids ' ?

That aside, the script for this production was very tortuous. It wound all over the place and in and out. It was so easy to lose track.

Not helped by the incompetent sound engineers. They have very sophisticated equipment today. So why do they turn out such poor soundtracks ? Unlike their counterparts of the classical period of Hollywood.

Camera angles. Well there weren't any. It gave the impression of all been filmed on cell phones. Held by persons suffering from St Vitus dance. I'll make no comment on the lighting. But I think you would know what I might have said.

I have read other reviews about this production. From people who actually read the novels.

And with regard to the characters they appear to be in lockstep.

I do hope the production team is not contemplating throwing good money after bad. By filming further of these novels. Without they make very, very drastic changes.

Not the best start, but I'll keep watching

I love CBB, I really do. I was happy to see her in another mystery. This one didn't get me hooked, but I'll watch a new one if they make any.

This film was a bit too character-wise, they were all over the place. Trying too hard to establish a fun quirky town.

Ainsley herself is a former criminologist, who teaches now. She opens a craft market and runs a book club. Her brother is locl sheriff. Her best friend's husband is a suspect. I wish the writers picked one of these reasons for her to be involved in the investigation. Way too much for Ainsley to do. Focus on one or two things: like she's the sister and the one who found the body. Or she's an off-duty criminologist who helps police in her free time. Etc.

And the book club looks a lot like Aurora Teagarden's club. Probably it's in the books, but I didn't read it. And I insist that it was a mess in this film. Their involvement seemed so forced.

The romantic line was a bit weird to watch. They didn't pretend Ainsley was a blushful maiden, even though the blurring filters were a bit too obvious. We knew she was a woman in her 40-s, he was a man in his 40-s. What's with the clumsy flirting?.. Making a big deal of a dinner invitation, then the whole come home for a cake thing (they really had cake), etc. I get it, these will ber uber-family-friendly films, but it's just way too weird.

As for the mystery itself it was better than I expected! So waiting for another one, hopefully less messy with more adult relationship.

Definitely Not a TeaGarden Mystery

The acting was pretty bad for the backup characters, with multiple times of "dead air". Not sure if this was for dramatic effect, but the scene by the car where they agree to meet at Dooley's for supper, was painful to watch.

The quality of the movie overall was far below what Candace previously had done on Hallmark and I know GAC is trying, but the quality of their movies just isn't there yet. Stop stealing actors and develop some actors for your series and movies.

The parallels between the Teagarden series is way too obvious - instead of an old boyfriend being a detective to work with, she works with her brother and then, the book club, which was so over the top, again made me uncomfortable and they forced it on us that they were going to discuss the murder and help to solve it, of course putting Ainsley as their leader since she has a criminal investigation background, but couldn't handle the situation so moved out of Chicago to the country. I rate it a 5, not a bad time waster, but definitely not a must watch like the Teagarden movies were.

Good production - Worth Watching

An enjoyable watch with an interesting plot, excellent acting, wonderfully developed characters, and really lovely scenery. We really, REALLY loved the main characters, but also really, really liked the supporting characters as well - their acting was all around superb. The mystery unfolded quite nicely and the vineyard angle was such a beautiful backdrop for the mystery. Yes, the script was a little bumpy in only a few places with the reciting of background details, but this didn't detract from the story at all (as other reviewers here suggest). For mystery fans, this is a truly enjoyable watch. Looking forward to additional installments with these characters in this beautiful scenery. Really hope there are more to come.

Off to a rough start

My husband happily watched the Aurora movies with me, but won't watch more of these after this. Even the opening scene with *all* of the background information was so awkward. Poor production quality is understandable, but poor writing is tough to watch.

I really appreciate what GAF is trying to do and want to support them. But why mystery? What good does that contribute to the world? Don't all of the other channels provide more than enough dead bodies to keep people satisfied? I wish they would do comedy instead. I'd love 23 minutes of Full House-style warm squishies at the end of a hard day.

I like it

It's like a pilot to a new series, good, but the actors just need to get comfortable in their new space. I liked it. I love Aaron Ashmore and Candace! It's a good start to what I hope to be a few more movies. The pace may have been a tiny bit slow and the supporting women characters could use some refining. The relationship with Ainsley's brother could use some more into the background of their lives. I like Robin and he and Candace do have history in real life from previous movies so I was hoping for them to feel closer as siblings but hey, I am not too close with my brothers so it is realistic.

But all in all a great start and hopefully there will be more.

Really bad acting

It felt like they were trying to create Aurora Teagarden on a new network. Candice's character mentioned at least 3 times how "small" "light" or "petite" she was. As a person who had her own eating disorder in really life, you would think she wouldn't keep talking about how tiny she is, negative for a younger audience. The acting was bad and felt awkward. Her character keeps telling everyone to let the police do their job, but she then caves in and tries to solve it anyway. No chemistry at all. Overall, a very disappointing production and I will not be watching anymore. Sticking with Hallmark.

Texas? Give me a break!

Let's start of with this taking place in Texas. Nope, not even close. Nowhere in Texas looks anything like the location of this show. In fact, it was actually filmed in Victoria British Columbia, almost 1800 miles from the closet border of Texas. I cannot for the life of me figure out why this was supposed to be Texas. There are no lakes surrounded by mountains anywhere in Texas. Next, none of the characters sound like or dress like Texas. Plastering Texas flags all over the set cannot make up for the glaring 2000 miles difference. I'm just blown away by the cluelessness of trying to pass this off as Texas. Next, just to beat a dead horse, there are no Mexican Americans, even as extras. Are the producers so dense they don't know how many Hispanics there are in Texas. If you're going to try to continue this silly charade, at least bring some actual Texans to fill in as extras.

The tropes are overflowing. Civilian female "criminologist" is smarter than all the local yokel sheriffs (with four stars on his collar no less. Acting and writing are meh.

Enjoyed it! I think you will too

I enjoyed the movie! This is a well written script and is a great version of the book with the same title. The entire cast is top notch, bringing to life the characters of the book as the story unfolds. The story is about a woman who is a criminologist/professor turned "art shop owner" who finds herself entangled in a murder soon after opening her new shop. Her brother is the local detective. A little romance and busy-body book club all come together to help solve the crime.

If you want an overdose of blood and gore, this is not the mystery for you. However, if you prefer developing critical thinking skills while watching a movie and enjoy analyzing a case, then you will enjoy this movie. Thank you again Candy Rock entertainment and Great American Family for delivering another fine TV movie.

Miss aurora

Candace's performance was so flat. I loved her in the Aurora tea garden series, but she was nothing like that in this movie now maybe it was the movie because the movie was so corny and stupid and had 1 million country bumpkin Hicks saying that I don't know what they were thinking Including all that stupid dialogue? So maybe if the writing gets better, she'll get better. It's kinda hard to know.

Loved this move

I was so sad when Candace Cameron Bure left Hallmark for GAF became I knew I would miss the Aurora Teagarden movies. I was super excited when I saw the addition of the Ainsley McGregor Mysteries with Candace. I will preface this review by saying I have read all the books and really like them.

The story stayed true to the book. Nice mystery, not preachy, and less violent than the book. I was a little worried with Aaron Ashmore playing Jake as I envision him as a really bad guy from Ginny and Georgia, but he was great in the movie. The movie was suspenseful, well written, well acted, Glad they kept the dog. Looking forward to the next one.

Murder? Meh.

I'm rewatching this again and I have to say, this episode just didn't do it for me. It is odd to me that with so many Hallmark Mystery regulars, that the acting, dialogue seems so wooden and inauthentic?

Not much chemistry. Shannon and Michael, the married couple. Ainsley and Ryan, siblings. Even the banter between Ainsley and her dog George feels forced.

I did enjoy the location though, so there is that.

At any rate, I stuck with it because I love these types of mysteries and wanted to give "Great American Family" a chance.

I don't see another episode in the works but if there is, I hope it is a lot better!

Solid mystery

This was a solid movie very hallmark like. I liked some of elements of this one, Ainsley's unwillingness to get in the way of the police for one, unlike her Aurora Teagarden role where she gleefully inserts herself into various investigations. Also in this one she actually has some formal training.

Another somewhat refreshing character is the dead man's wife, he isn't forthcoming with information and flatly asks her what her official capacity is in the investigation before bluntly telling her to get lost, which is what you'd expect any rational person to do if some stranger or non police person started asking a bunch of questions, especially about an alibi.

The mystery itself was pretty good. I might give it a 10, but I didn't think they had enough other possible suspects. I didn't think it was very hard to solve this, I could say they led you to it, but it was very easy to solve. They needed I think another couple of really reasonable suspects, perhaps my I was hoping for more of a Agatha Christie style who done it.

Better than Teagarden Mysteries

I enjoyed this first movie. I love the potential of the new characters and this premise of a Criminology Professor helping solve murder is much more plausible than a Librarian who just happens to have a certain set of skills. It leaves more scope for better plots.

I found it entertaining, dramatic and the plot moved along very nicely considering the introduction of all the characters.

All the actors bounced really well off each other especially Aaron Ashmore and Candice Cameron Bure. I really enjoyed the interplay and the chemistry between them.

If you liked the original Teagarden Mysteries (like me) you will love this. I hope they make the next two movies.

Appreciative

The only thing I can say is that I am thankful that Candace is back...I haven't seen her in mysteries for quite some time. It's been a while since I've seen her in Aurora Teagarden mysteries...and it hasn't been the same.

Meanwhile, I can't wait for Candace's next appearance in the Ainsley McGregor Mystery series or in any other mystery series. The cast is also great and I'm glad to see there are a lot of familiar faces there as well. The fact that the movie is familiar brings a certain degree of credibility to it. Thanks to the entire production team, crew, and everyone who made this possible.
