I watched this because it had Charlie Cox in it. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard him in his actual accent. It certainly increased his charm. He and the dog Merv were the stars of this movie! He and Zoey Deschanel had not a drop of chemistry. I didn't think she had much chemistry with the dog Merv either. The story line was also way too long and disjointed. He was the better dog owner, in my opinion. Enjoyed the scenes with Patrica Heaton. She gave this movie some humor. Charlie Cox's dance moves were spectacular. He looked to be having a lot of fun in those dance scenes. It is a clean movie with no sex scenes or bad language so appropriate for most ages.

Sure, as the above review stated, "merv (does) steal your heart" OF COURSE HE DOES he's adorable but, and this is a big but - an animal co-star should be just that, a co-star and NOT merely a prop. However in the case of Merv, the doggo is simply that and it's very awkward - I don't know if Zoey is a cat person or what but it's like she's never touched a dog before and watching her attempt to act off of him is borderline cringe. Charlie isn't much better - so ya it's cute and yes I'd say it's worth a watch but just know this isn't a dog movie as much as a movie with a dog - I know I KNOW but....
Now this is such a cute little movie! I really enjoyed this corny cute holiday movie, especially with Merv. He's the cutest little guy and I just loved him on screen! Also brings great awareness to pet adoption and its importance. Great film for the whole family to watch and good for the holiday season.

A stereotypical holiday-themed romcom AND a dog? Yes, please!
It's a story about a modern couple that's co-parenting a dog and dealing with a break-up.
Charlie Cox was so good in this role: sweet, charming, funny and believable. He's exactly the love interest you'd want to see in a film of this caliber. He's the approachable guy next door, but then they put glasses on him and he instantly became 10 times hotter.
Gus the dog who played Merv is so adorable, i just couldn't take my eyes off of him.
However.....since when can Zooey Deschanel not act?! I'm a big fan of "New Girl", and I always assumed she was a good enough actress. Now I'm starting to think that the strong male cast of the show concealed he lack of talent so well that I was fooled. Here she is absolutely horrible. She couldn't even have chemistry with the dog on screen. The entire film it just felt like she really didn't want to be on that set. I didn't believe a single thing she has said, a single face expression. It devastates me to say, she was just bad in this movie. Replace her with any other female lead, plus Charlie and Gus - and it would have been a solid romcom.

This movie was sweet and fun. Watched it with my daughter and we had some good laughs at the dogs' antics. The two leads made a cute and believable couple, and made you want to root for them. And Merv was appropriately adorable.
The beach resort for dogs was a clever setting and made for some amusing situations. Loved Charlie Cox in this! He is so likeable. Zooey is fine but Charlie and Gus (Merv) carry the movie.

You might expect a predictable story from a Christmas rom-com, but Merv delivers a massive surprise: the dog. Merv has an incredible presence that completely steals the show.
His performance is so convincing it makes you wonder if he is CGI or AI-generated. But he isn't-he is a real rescue dog named Gus! He conveys emotion with impeccable authenticity, at times even outshining the talented cast, including 500 Days of Summer star Zooey Deschanel and Daredevil himself, Charlie Cox.
While the plot involves a sunny detour to Florida rather than just snowy landscapes, it remains a heartwarming watch for the holiday season.
Verdict: Go for it!

This Amazon movie became available streaming this week. I was anxious to watch it because I am a Zooey fan. So my wife and I watched it. I enjoyed it fine as interesting entertainment, she enjoyed it less, she feels that some parts moved a bit too slowly.
Living and working in Boston Zooey Deschanel is Anna Finch, an optometrist. She has been in a long-term relationship with Charlie Cox as elementary school teacher Russ Owens. They have a dog, Merv, that each one is very attached to, much like if it were a child.
When the two split up for questionable reasons they make an agreement to share Merv, alternate weeks. But Merv seems to be depressed so Russ decides his next week will be spent with Merv at a Florida dog resort on the beach.
They go but Anna shows up unannounced, that is the catalyst to create a number of interesting situations. As we watch we sense that Anna and Russ aren't really over each other and it seems that will be leading to their repairing the fractured relationship.
There are a few novel concepts and while it isn't a very memorable movie I did find it suitably entertaining. Just a one-time viewing.

Jessica Day and Daredevil in a Christmas movie about a dog? Sounds perfect for a millennial woman like myself with three dogs who is secretly nerdy and enjoys a cheesy Christmas movie from time to time.
In a nutshell: this movie is such a bummer. It's just a long, boring, terribly written movie. No chemistry between the leads. My husband and I both do not understand how it got made.

"Merv" is a genuinely charming film that knows exactly what it wants to be. It doesn't try too hard to impress with big twists or heavy drama, and that's actually part of its strength. The story is simple, warm, and easy to connect with, making the film very enjoyable to watch from start to finish.
While it may not be perfect or groundbreaking, it makes up for that with its heart. The characters feel sincere, the tone is light but meaningful, and there's a quiet emotional pull that stays with you. Some moments could have been developed a bit more, but overall the film leaves you with a smile.
"Merv" is one of those sweet, feel-good movies that reminds you cinema doesn't always need to be loud or complex to be effective. A very lovely watch.

I enjoyed this cute Rom-Com, with a pup. All 3 main characters have chemistry, seriously. As a dog mom I enjoyed this movie more than I expected. Cgarlue Cox can move (see the dance scene). I love Merv, he is so adorable, and his cute face and expressions! I'm sure his trainer is be proud. Nice stress free movie.
I really wanted to like this given the actors, but it's super gloomy, be warned. If you're in the mood for a cheery holiday movie, this will not be it! The dog is sad (not funny), the actors are sad, the music is sad... and there is very little relief. I can appreciate if they were going for something deeper than a silly romantic comedy, but this is the anti-Elf.
Every now and then there are times you just need a great feel good movie . Add some animals and light comedy with a hint of sadness and romance all while Christmas hangs in the background.
Actors worked well together, but the star was Gus (Merv) Worth some eggnog and a cuddle up night .. No spoilers needed .

'Merv' is sort of a coming of age story for adults. Russ (Charlie Cox) and Anna (Zooey Deschanel) are separated but they share the same dog, Merv, who stays with each of them on a weekly basis. When Merv gets depressed, Russ decides to take him to a dog beach to try and cheer him up.
Anna turns up unexpectedly and although there's initially tension between them, they realize how much fun they can still have together - and that they still have feelings for each other. 'Merv' is an uncomplicated movie, and off course predictable, but it was a lot of fun and I really enjoyed Charlie Cox as Russ. While kids might enjoy the quite doggy, 'Merv' is more for a teen to adult demographic (basically, someone with relationship experience who will understand what Russ and Anna are going through).

Merv positions itself as a cozy, Hallmark-style comedy with a lighthearted emotional hook, but the film never fully commits to developing that premise into something memorable or impactful. From the outset, it feels like it wants to be a comforting relationship story with a quirky twist, yet it struggles to balance sincerity with meaningful storytelling. While the tone is pleasant, it quickly becomes clear that the film is relying more on familiarity than substance.
The central relationship is where Merv shows its strongest moments. There is a genuine attempt to explore emotional distance, miscommunication, and the quiet strain that can exist between people who care about each other. These scenes occasionally work, especially when the actors are allowed to slow down and simply react to one another. Unfortunately, the film often interrupts that emotional grounding by shifting focus too heavily onto the dog-centered narrative, which feels more symbolic than functional.
The decision to make the dog such a dominant storytelling device is where the film falters most. While the concept of a pet reflecting the emotional state of its owners can be effective, Merv pushes this idea too far, assigning emotional complexity that the screenplay never fully supports. Instead of enhancing the story, these moments sometimes feel forced or repetitive, distracting from the human drama that should have remained the focus.
Pacing is another issue that holds the film back. There are stretches where the movie feels genuinely charming and engaging, followed by long periods that feel stagnant and underwritten. The lack of narrative momentum makes it difficult to stay fully invested, as the film rarely builds toward anything substantial. When emotional beats arrive, they often feel rushed or unearned.
Ultimately, Merv is a passable streaming watch that offers a few warm moments but lacks the depth or polish to stand out. It's cute in small doses, mildly endearing, and serviceable for a one-time viewing, but it doesn't leave a lasting impression. Once it's over, there's little reason to return, making it a film that exists comfortably in the background rather than one that truly resonates.

Prime Video presents a new premiere on its streaming platform: a romantic comedy with Christmas and dog touches that, despite the incredible chemistry between its protagonists, fails to fully consolidate.
Starring Zooey Deschanel and Charlie Cox, a recently separated couple takes their shared dog on a holiday trip to cheer him up, but end up reconnecting romantically.
Merv is a heartwarming film that you're sure to enjoy this holiday season. However, it doesn't offer much beyond a simple love story, charming thanks to the incredible chemistry between its lead couple, which makes it easy to connect with them. It also features a charismatic Merv, who shines as a solid supporting actor.
A story about separation and what pet owners do with their money. In that context, we find a film that offers a touch of entertainment without great complications, but it won't change your life or be something you'll remember forever. It's a plot that gets the job done, but it's nothing more than a momentary pastime for a streaming platform.
Zooey Deschanel and Charlie Cox carry the film with their charisma, accompanied by a couple of supporting actors who each have their moments. If you're a dog lover, this is a film that will thrill you; but if you're looking for a grand canine adventure, it might not be what you're hoping for, since Merv is a charismatic dog, albeit without much screen time. It's a story more focused on the main couple than on the adorable dog.
I'd say it's a perfect movie for a family weekend. A romantic comedy about reconnecting and overcoming difficult times, with a love for dogs and Christmas touches in certain scenes. It does its job, but not much more than that.

Merv is a comedy around a dog and their two owners who have seperated. Think of the movie The Parent Trap but with a dog instead of daughters. The movie features some funny scenes but mostly is forgettable. This is a shame since the movie features a strong cast with Zooey Deschanel and Charlie Cox. The real star of the movie here is the dog but even they could not carry this film. Merv gets a low 5 stars out of 10 from me.

Look, it's a Christmas movie about a dog. It's a perfectly fine, perfectly predictable film.
But why is it so grey? The colour grading is horrendous. Half the film takes place in Florida, yet the colours look muted and washed out. It doesn't exactly ruin the film, but knocks it down a point or two.

I loved merv, what a sweet dog! I thought the movie was going to be about him, but it turned out to be a dysfunctional relationship with a lack luster chemistry. I dont think Zoey Deschanel was the best pick for that role or perhaps the characters personality was made to be boring.. 🤷♀️ Either way it was not good and was disappointing.

The movie Merc, starring Charlie Cox and Zooey Deschantel, was a big disappointment for me. The main reason is that Charlie Coz doesn't turn into Daredevil even once. I kept waiting for the superhero moment, but this movie seems more focused on his daily life and his dog. Which honestly was pretty boring.
The woman is fine, but very predictable. The movie focuses a lot on emotions and relationships, and I guess thats interesting to some people, but it felt slow. Overall it's not a terrible movie, but it never delivered on what I was waiting for, so I give it 3 out of 10 stars.

And it was honestly the only thing I loved about this movie.
Zoey deschanel is still mostly adorable, but her (sort of) monotone/deadpan delivery and vacant gaze was the work of a lesser actress. (And I think she may have a medical condition with the nerves on her face...maybe Bell's palsy..?) Her completely unlikeable character didn't help. The lead actor looks like my ex-husband (20 years ago); so, attractive, and the acting was fine. But a terrible script and uneven direction didn't help his characterization.
I absolutely adore wire-haired dogs in general, so Merv was the only redeeming factor of this hot mess. I appreciated his humble sharing of screentime with other pups in glimpses during the dog resort scenes. :-D
Marly & Me it is NOT. (I've actually never seen that film, but know it's beloved by many. I think the average viewer of "M&M" would enjoy the dogs in this, but also feel "Merv" is slop.)

First of all, everything I want in a christmas movie/romcom. Second, my husband and I can't have kids and watching all the romcoms where everyone gets pregnant at the end can be tough, but I'm a sucker for the genre. THANK YOU to whomever wrote this in.
Zooey and Charlie are adorable.
The pups were wonderful, too!! <3.

A nice, gentle watch. Just what you want from a Christmas movie. Was it fantastic? No, but it's a solid casual watch on a saggy Sunday, or for betwixmas.
This film had all the markers of an amazing film but the edit lets it down. Too long and drawn out in places, then wraps up really quickly. Even so, a decent watch and I'd recommend it.

Absolutely loved this movie and it was such a great role for each of the actors they did really well. Russ and Anna dynamic is a bit rough around the edges but the characters fall into place and the story warms up quickly. Such a cute and sweet heartfelt storyline and seeing the dynamic of the actors portraying Russ's parents with the main characters it felt like they were a real family. Great acting and emotions throughout with the goofy lines and laughs. Loved it!
