1st half of the movie was good. Acting was good, and story was good...then the 2nd half happens, and freaking vampires enter a "gangster movie" out of nowhere, and ruin it. The movie just nosedived, and it was just pure chaos. It tried too hard to be like 'From Dusk Till Dawn', but it didn't hit the mark. Michael B. Jordan is really an excellent actor, and was good in this one, but it was wasted in movie like this. This movie could have been great if they never went the vampire route, and just kept with the gangster theme/time period piece. I was intrigued right from the beginning of the movie, and wanted more of how it started, but when the movie ended, I was just like "what the heck did they do to this movie?". It was so unnecessary. Not a fan, but because the acting and music was very good, I give it a 6...but that is being nice.

I wouldn't call sinners a bad film as a whole but it definitely feels convoluted. You initially get reeled in by sinners compelling cinematography. Dynamics feel rich, little nuances among the various characters contribute to a well fleshed out community. On the other hand, understanding protagonists/the twins seems to be somewhat absent throughout the film. Considering how much time is spent with them I think there should've been more development. Halfway through the film, stakes start ramping up and we're still asking questions. For example, how'd the twins get to their current state? What motivated their actions taken in the film? This lack of character insight is what gave the film a very hollow feel. In other words, character deaths as is bothered me less than the death of the relationships those characters possessed.

This aspect leads into one of the more interesting parts of the film being the psychological impact on sinners characters. Characters in the film eventually become vampires in which these same characters shared close relations with plenty of others. Once characters become vampires they psychologically torment the remaining uninfected. I found this compelling since these same vampires had relationships with the uninfected so their manipulation feels much more personal and provokes irrational decision making. On a different note sinners wasn't shy to being a gore fest which is par for the course. Something else noteworthy was the lack of a clear theme, more so attempts at trying to convey multiple ones that didn't get expanded on.

Overall, I was balancing the pros and cons quite a bit but simplified it down. Sinners is built on good concepts, but it doesn't do anything with them. Wasted potential if you will, definitely overhyped.

Went to see this because I like vampire movies, and Tom Cruise endorsed it. Never saw him endorsing any movies so I got more curious.

Production, costume, make up, visuals are very good.

Story is meh. Standard vampire look and behavior. Another movie implying some faith doesn't work in fighting demons but a voodoo mojo does, nothing new there.

I dislike musicals so its musical parts added nothing for me. The past and future music evoked could have been more abstract, but they were real people in different eras costumes mingling in, kinda ruined the believability of the 1930s vibe for me. Looked like a silly company dinner and dance instead.

Can totally see certain demographic overhyping this. Again, nothing new.

An okay watch overall, fun at times.

Sinners impresses early with its stunning cinematography and solid performances. The film sets a moody, atmospheric tone and builds tension with a deliberate, slow-burn approach that hints at something truly impactful. Unfortunately, that promise is never fulfilled. When the vampires finally appear, the film takes a sharp downturn. Their behavior is nonsensical, lacking any real menace or intelligence, and they end up feeling more like a parody than a threat. It's a baffling creative choice that undermines everything the first half works so hard to build. Despite its strong technical elements, the film stumbles badly at the finish line. A stylish misfire-watchable, but disappointing. 6 out of 10.

I tried to understand why so many people were raving about this movie. I will admit that the cinematic experience was great. Some really beautiful scenes that took me by surprise. The costume were fitting for the era. Everything about in every scene was beautiful. But where it lost it's greatness to me was not the acting, but in it's trying to convince me that these vampires was menacing. The eyes were just too comical for me and the gore was too over the top. One area where it hit hard was the music. Even if you are not a fan of the genre you will enjoy the music.

That is something very special that we don't see often in the movies, using music in this was to tell a story.
