Slice of life? Nope. Life as it is. Hugs to the protagonists. [+79%]

I'm yet to see a larger-than-life Iranian film where characters defy physics, logic, and emotions-here's another sweet little gem to add to that list. This is a story of two 70-year-olds finding love one fine evening, sharing life's little details and cherishing its little moments along the way. We meet Mahin (an absolutely adorable Lili Farhadpour) as she goes about her day, understanding more about her through the slice-of-life interactions she has with the people around. Faramarz (Esmaeel Mehrabi, playing the tender counterpart to perfection) enters her life as randomly as it can get, and this leads to interesting conversations, wine, and merry-making. A late (and expected) swerve only reminds you of how happy moments don't last forever, but neither do the sad ones. Also, when all this plays out in a country that's big on moral policing, how can you not smile first (and sigh later)?

Powerful movie that stays with you for a while

I watched this film in my favourite little local art house cinema not really knowing what to expect.

I have come to like films where I can watch other people's lives. People doing every day things. When they are set in different cultures - even more interesting.

Here we follow the life of an elderly woman in Iran and I was so touched by the beauty in the little things, the dinner with her girlfriends, how she spends her day.

The film holds an unexpected surprise that really stuck with me for a long time afterwards. It made me appreciate that I was able to see this film and that I am able to live my life (as a woman) in Europe.

I can recommend this film.

Innocent and harsh

The movie had such an innocent vibe, but what it was trying to say really hit hard. Normally, I don't get emotional about old people, but just the fact that the main character was old was enough to make me feel sad. Maybe it's because of the actress's performance too; there was this pure loneliness in her eyes. I found myself really touched by the film.

The cinematography was beautiful too. I really liked the warm tones, the way the house was decorated, and how the garden was lit. Everything just fit so well. The moments between the two main characters, like when they danced and took selfies, were really sweet and tender. The ending hit harder this way, but a part of me still wishes movies like this would be a bit more clear with their message at the end.

A must watch

As an Iranian in exile, I watched this film with mixed emotions-laughing throughout but also with a lump in my throat. The film is beautifully crafted, filled with beautiful details that bring the story to life. It offers a powerful portrayal of life in a society where love, joy, and even laughter are suppressed. What makes this film stand out, even more, is its unique focus: for once, the protagonist and the central love story are between two older individuals, a refreshing narrative in cinema.

Even if you're not Iranian, you'll appreciate the universal themes of love, resilience, and the human spirit. It allows viewers to reflect on the quiet but enduring resistance people face in the face of repression, making it a story that resonates beyond cultural boundaries. It evokes both joy and sorrow at the same time.

Fantastic Movie

It's a fantastic movie! Showcasing a lot of Persian culture, being a very amusing and charming movie, but also hinting to a lot of political topics.

That we are able to watch that movie is a political act by itself which needs its appreciation. But for a movie being made in Iran under this circumstances is incredible. I have never seen that many scenes on the streets of Iran within a movie. Also all of them beautifully shot. Impressive to see what Iranian directors are pulling of. The storyline itself is brilliant as well as the acting. The cinema we were at was full of Iranians laughing and feeling the movie. The atmosphere was magical. If you are in for a wholesome movie with a dramatic twist, go for it. It's an absolut must watch.

My Favourite Cake

"Mahin" (Lili Farhadpour) is a lonely, widowed, retired nurse who has lived by herself for many years, when she happens to overhear a conversation in the government run pensioner's cafe that points out that taxi driver "Faramarz" (Esmaeel Mehrabi) is also single. She quite quickly determines to track him down and next thing she is in his cab. It's not like she's a cougar nor he a womaniser - they are just two older people who click at the idea of something a bit "extra" at the end of their rain soaked day. The largest bottle of wine you've ever seen is duly produced and, well you can guess what's on the cards. Except? Well you can also guess that things are not going to go to plan either - and we are given a few subtle clues along the way to manage our expectations as this really quite entertainingly mischievous story develops. Farhadpour is really engaging as she charms her new beau and there's a lovely, soft, chemistry between the two as most of the plot unfolds in her house as they take care not to involve the dreaded morality police who might arrive and punish them - even at their advanced age - for being alone in her home together! Indeed, what also helps this work is the gentle way in which it makes some pretty hefty points. About age, assumptions about age - true, but it also takes a broader look at a society that still treats women as less free citizens thanks their testicled counterparts. Most of all thought it's really quite funny and delivers us a message of confidence, shyness, optimism and hope tempered with some dark humour - especially at the end. I'm not quite sure she could have baked the cake in quite the timeline offered, but it did look tasty!

The worst good movie you'll ever watch.

This is my one and only review on IMDB.

I went into the cinema reluctantly for this one. Asked by friends to see it just to support our local cinema. I had no expectation and lots of prejudice. I thought this was going to be a Swedish-influenced movie about immigrants.

Instead I got suckerpunched by the sheer depression, the sheer loneliness and the sheer difference in culture this film exudes.

The acting is immensely good. I suspect the actors are more themselves than actually acting. They themselves can relate to the script in very real ways.

The story is the void itself with a glimmer of hope somewhere in the darkness but in the end nothing lasts.

Whispers of Loneliness

This groundbreaking Iranian film is the first to be shot secretly within the country, challenging the government's strict hijab laws that prohibit showing women's hair in movies. The director and cast took extraordinary risks, displaying immense bravery to bring this story to life. Now, they face severe repercussions; they are under strict surveillance, barred from leaving the country, and may even be sentenced to jail for their defiance. The film offers a deeply moving narrative that delves into themes of aging and loneliness, capturing the struggles and quiet resilience of individuals who feel forgotten by society.

A quiet and powerful Film

This film is full of beauty and magic of all the small things and also tragedy. The quiet longing of the main protagonist and her courage and chuzpe when she is standing up for herself and tries ro find new ways to find love again are beautiful and sometimes fun to watch. But you are always reminded that you are in a country that restrics the rights of women. Here you have the nousy neighbor too, but you realise, that she can get you in real trouble.

On the other hand that precious romance between. Mahin and Faramaz brings so many sweet moments and also some laughs.

After the premier I was deeply moved.

Lovely Movie

It's a story of an older widow leaving alone. The lead actress and actor are both good at portraying the complexities in social life of older people. The small details in their back and forths are very lovely. In fact, the script is very touching and eye opening and masterfully written at large. The movie is also beautifully shot and the locations and set/costume designs are nice.

All these being said, there are two main issues with this movie. First, it has an unnecessary political undertone in it which takes away from the rather lovely human story it's trying to say. I've noticed that this is a common theme in Iranian movies these days as the directors try to appease to the western festivals. Secondly, the last 10-20 minute of the movie is just bad. It seemed the writers just deliberately decided to sabotage their own story. Instead of delivering a satisfying conclusion to the rather beautifully told story, the movie just leaves you confused and frustrated. What a waste.

Not a good ending

The film is perfect until the last 10 minutes, why they always need to be sad at the end:/, i get it Persian people have so many complications but dude:/ why this ending? Why not a happy ending??????

We need to have a happy movie with happy ending, I thought i am watching a movie that makes me super happy and the characters are funny but the ending made me speechless...if you don't like a sad and annoying ending don't watch this...just make something that shows the complexity of living in Iran but also how people are trying to be happy anyway in this situations...if i knew this would happen i would never chose this.

Best film of the year so far

Going into "My Favorite Cake," I anticipated a film heavily laden with political undertones, expecting a narrative that would dissect social issues and provoke deep, contentious debates. However, I left the theater experiencing something entirely different-a movie that is undeniably one of the most heartwarming and saddest films I have ever seen.

The story revolves around the two main characters, brilliantly portrayed by actors whose performances deserve the highest accolades. Their chemistry and depth brought an incredible realism to the screen. The nuances in their interactions, the subtle expressions of their emotions, and the powerful dialogues created an unforgettable and captivating experience. It felt as if we were living through their joys, sorrows, and every little moment in between.

The direction was nothing short of masterful. The director intricately wove the narrative, allowing the audience to immerse themselves fully in the life of the main character. The scenes were crafted with such precision that every frame contributed to the storytelling, making us feel the weight of every decision and the impact of every event in the character's journey. The pacing was perfect, never rushed, allowing us to savor each poignant moment and truly connect with the story.

Adding to the film's emotional depth was the soundtrack, which was impeccably chosen and perfectly matched to the film's tone. The soundtrack consistently hit the right notes, resonating with the audience long after the credits rolled.

"My Favorite Cake" turned out to be a cinematic gem, defying my initial expectations and delivering a profoundly moving experience. It's a testament to the power of storytelling, remarkable performances, and skilled direction. This film is a must-watch for anyone seeking a deeply emotional and beautifully crafted movie.

Gorgeous

The adage "it's better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all" is well-known, but what about people who have the courage to fall in love again? For a 70-year-old Iranian widow, it's a desperate attempt to feel alive again, but it's a bold move for anyone. That is the idea behind a sweet Iranian love comedy that is infused with surprising radicalism.

Mahin (played by the charming Lili Farhadpour) spends her days doing the same things: sleeping in till midday, rushing to answer FaceTime calls from her daughter who lives abroad, taking care of her garden, and visiting the less-than-local market from her home on the outskirts of Tehran. Each scene is portrayed as a nicely framed vignette by co-directors Maryam Moqadam and Behtash Sanaeeha, despite the setting's banality.

Keep an eye on it-words cannot help it. In a society where everyone is scrutinised and evaluated, genuine love endures forever, and it's simple to find if you look for it! This charming story serves as a reminder.

Best movie so far this year

This movie is truly the best movie so far this year that I have seen. Brilliant acting, good dialogue and a very surprising film. I had a big smile on my face when I left the cinema. A film that will stay with me for a long time and I really recommend everyone to see it. Hope it gets Oscar nominations for "Best Picture", "Best Foreign Film" and "Best Actress". She really deserves it, she was amazingly good and she carried the movie through out. The movie deserves both of the Oscars aswell. The movie deserves every attention it can get. I hope as many people get to see this film. Just love this. See it now !!

A Slice of Real Life: My Favorite Cake

The film is so beautiful, so grounded in reality, and so emotionally authentic deserves the highest accolades. My Favorite Cake is not just a poignant work of art-it is a cinematic triumph that speaks to the universal need for love and connection, no matter one's age. It is the kind of story that transcends borders and cultures, making it a strong contender for an Oscar. Such a deeply human and realistic masterpiece deserves to be celebrated on the world stage.

The film's exploration of loneliness is profoundly moving. It captures the quiet sorrow of lives lived in isolation while celebrating the beauty of human connection, however brief. The widowed woman, burdened by unspoken grief, and the taxi driver, carrying the weight of his past, are portrayed with such depth and nuance that their stories feel heartbreakingly real and universally relatable.

The director's approach is both sensitive and masterful. Through her lens, loneliness becomes more than just an emotion-it's a palpable presence that inhabits the spaces between the characters. She employs a restrained yet evocative style, using long silences, intimate close-ups, and a muted color palette to immerse the audience in the inner worlds of her protagonists. The moments of connection-though brief-shine like rare jewels, offering glimpses of hope and the enduring beauty of humanity.

The best film of 2024 so far!

What a great film, very unique and realistic, the exact film that is needed.

It is a film about a lonely woman who is looking for some joy under Iran's totalitarian regime but things didn't go well as she planned. But it is more like a backstory to the real stories and issues that were featured on its rich plot.

Social realism drama/tragicomedy/romantic drama.

Cool, real, sad, funny, unique, professional, courageous, rich, interesting, balanced, entertaining, inspiring, caring, shocking and mostly eloquent.

Taboo breaking and unconventional for Iran's cinema.

Great direction. Great screenplay. Very good production. Very good acting. Very good edits. Good film score. Great audio mixing/editing. Great cinematography. Great tone. Well-paced. Well-balanced; uniquely.

Not quite family-friendly; inappropriate for kids in a few instances.

I really loved it.

8.5/10.

Nothing Special

In this movie, we see a lonely old woman who is left by her children and looks for love and company.

The most important point of this movie is showing the old woman without mandatory hijab. I think that for women her age, hijab is not even required by Islam's sharia but it is stupidly enforced by the Iranian government. There are also many dialogues that are clearly put in the film to oppose the political system and mostly, they are not even related to the main story line. Apart from these points, which do not have anything to do with the artistic value of the movie, I did not see anything special. The story is boring and cliched.

As an Iranian, I felt that the movie was engineered to attract the attention of foreign film festivals. Although I am not fond of the Iranian political system myself, I sensed the lack of the sincerity that an artist must have.

Real life in Iran

Finally, someone dared to make a real movie about Iran, people of the world can watch our life. It's Iranian life.

I thank the filmmakers and I hope they will continue this way because we don't have any Iranian movies to watch. Unfortunately, most of the movies made by the government are not liked or approved by us.

At the same time, I want this site to remove the word limit. Why should there be a limit on how much I can talk and comment about a movie? Please take care of this issue. By the way, correct and accurate comments are comments that explain the movie briefly and usefully. People cannot read so many long comments to watch a movie. Please reconsider.

I suggest

I am incredibly proud to know that such brave and talented artists live in my country. Watching this film filled me with admiration, not just for the story it told, but also for the powerful way it brought all the difficult realities and restrictions to life. It's rare to find a movie that can reflect so much of our society's truths in such an honest and artistic way. The creators took these tough subjects, including all the cultural and social limitations, and turned them into something beautiful, meaningful, and unforgettable.

The decoration and set designs were simply perfect. The music also deserves special praise.

The story of aging, loneliness, happiness and sadness

A beautiful, elderly woman feels lonely because societal stigmas in Iran have forced her to live alone. In her culture, widows are often restricted from having free relationships. One day, she overcomes her fears and proposes a relationship to an elderly man. Together, they experience the best night of their lives-laughing, dancing, drinking, bathing, and talking.

But at the end ,she returns to her lonely world.

They play their roles very naturally and I was able to to connect with them .

The film shows different social and political issues in Iran.

In one dialogue, the old man said, "I feel like I'm invisible for a long time." Unfortunately, this is a global issue for elderly people who lack social support.
