So Clever!

I'm thrilled this original show found its feet. Well-written, directed, and acted. The characters have a lovely blend of authenticity and comedy. Each episode has heart and humour. Well done, CBC! Keep commissioning these gorgeous nation-loving gems.

I don't feel the need to say a whole lot more. If you're new to the show and unsure, keep watching. You'll get hooked soon enough. It is delightfully quirky, unique in storylines, and some wonderful, uncomfortably awkward moments that push the stories forward. I also deeply appreciate an insight into the Inuit culture, especially from an everyday (albeit TV sitcom) point of view.

Such a sweet show

I found very refreshing to watch a show that takes place in territories that we never see on screen (except maybe in sordid films about the far north). I loved discovering Inuk actors, the language, the music, the culture ... The story of this woman who finds herself stuck in her daily life and who seeks to build her own identity outside of her family is super interesting and is totally relatable. I'll remember a sweet and comforting show, we become attached to all the characters, in short, I loved it, and I will be waiting for season 2 ! (I'm going to listen to the playlist in more detail right now)

Really Love This Series, Hope There's a Season 2!

I really love this series, the casting is great. I can truly identify with Siaja and the way she is treated by her husband. Wish I had been able to make a break when I was young like her. I love the story line with her father. It's good to see the actor who plays him, again. He gives such heart to the character of Alistaire. And, I really like the actor who plays Kuuk, Jeremy from SkyMed. I sure hope there will be more episodes, seems like it was just starting to get deep the last few episodes. It's so refreshing to see something new on TV that hasn't already been done a million times over. I love the mix of the youth with the seniors in the show. And the community feel. Also the length of each episode is a good length if you are just looking for something to watch when you don't have a lot of time.

EVERSICK!!!

As an Inuk woman, I never thought I'd see a show that represents us with this much care, heart and authenticity. North to North blew me away.

Our humor, our culture, the parkas, the beaded earrings, the traditional markings, it's all there and it's beautiful. I felt so seen. Every scene felt like home in a way I've never experienced from TV before.

I love this show so much. It's not just entertaining, it's important. It shows the strength, beauty, and complexity of our people.

I can't wait for the next generation to grow up seeing this kind of representation and feeling proud of who they are.

It's not just good, it's necessary. More Native shows like this, please!!! Our voices matter, our stories matter, and this proves it.

Rushed to watch every episode as it came out

Earnest, fresh, engaging show that showcases the beauty and challenges of Northern life through unique, contemporary Inuit-centered stories. Lots of heart while also quirky and hilarious. I'm really rooting for Siaja - she's messy, funny, driven, beautiful, whip-smart and resourceful... It was very easy to fall in love with her, her family and community. There was obvious thought and care put in every aspect of the production, it gives the show a very believable feel - this doesn't feel like a folklorized, frozen (pun!) -in-time version of Nunavut, rather a real, current place. I don't doubt it will boost interest in tourism and fashion from the region (the characters wear some truly gorgeous items of clothing and jewelry!!). Streamed on CBC gem every Tuesday and sad I'll have to wait a while for more - because there will be more, right?!

Above Average

Created by Stacey Aglok MacDonald and Alethea Arnaquq-Baril, we follow Siaja (Anna Lambe), a young Inuk mother in the far north Arctic where she must navigate her jerk husband, the new town heartthrob, her troubled mother, all while raising her daughter, finding a new job, and discovering how to find her own way in the world. Airing through ATPN, the CBC, and Netflix, the series narrative features many fairly typical daytime soap dynamics as its underpinnings, but the series has been a pleasure so far in its representation and honesty, its certainly a view of Canada we don't see far enough. Some of the early writing and acting is a bit stiff, but as the series takes off things are really a treat. The wardrobe in this is fantastic, and seeing everything filmed on location in Nunavut was both a must and a treat. Lambe as the lead does well, and as the drama progresses you definitely gain investment in the characters and town, despite some of its dramawkwardness. There's some love triangle bits that feel played out and too familiar, but any times the show showed its own voice and teachings through the cracks it really shined. Also, whoever handled music on this deserves a raise, was oh so good. Only 8 short episodes for its premiere season I really do hope we see more, I'll certainly watch it.

Kudos Netflix!

This show is a really well drawn piece. From the storyline,to the funny moments ,great music and awesome costumes this TV show screams quality. The acting is great even from the breakthrough actors. Of course 'Ben Hanscom' (Jay Ryan) and 'Chloe' (M. Rajskub)were great, but everyone else too. The lead actress is going places! I loved the "grandparents" storyline, it reminded me me of Rojelio's and Xiomara's from Jane the Virgin. The only notes:1)First episode is a little awkward, but I believe because it wants to introduce the characters first, then it gets awesome. 2) The guy that plays her ex husband looks the same age as her father and older than her mother but they are supposed to be high school sweethearts. Weird. Everything else perfect.

A tentative "so far so good"

I just finished the first two episodes of this show. While I wait for the next ones, I'll give a brief review.

First, I would be lying if I said that the show was great. It isn't quite there yet. The pilot falls prey, as so many TV pilots do, to clunky exposition in its attempt to establish the story. One of the most egregious examples is when a character tells his wife "You know why this is important" before explaining exactly why it's important for the audience's benefit. The acting is also a little shaky at times, sad to say, including in that aforementioned moment.

However, with that said, I've noticed that TV pilots are almost always the worst episodes of the show, so I would only urge people to watch both the first two episodes before making up their minds on whether to continue.

And discounting its flaws, the pilot has an interesting premise. The protagonist is very likeable too; Siaja is a young woman who got married right out of high school to the small-town hero. Ting is wildly popular, but he is also a complete and utter douchebag to her, taking her for granted while flying high on his own fumes. When he pushes her too far, Siaja has had enough. In an act fuelled by substances and her own impulsiveness, she breaks up with him. Thus, she and her daughter move in with her mom, and she embarks on a plan to rebuild her life as someone more than just the local hero's wife.

The second episode, without spoiling anything, is a big improvement to the pilot. Now that a lot of exposition is out of the way, the story is able to move forward. Anna Lambe proves her mettle as Siaja once again, as do the rest of the supporting characters. Ting is believable as a man who's used to being the popular guy, and like so many guys who peaked in high school, he's got an infuriating sense of entitlement. I also liked Siaja's complicated relationship with her mother, as well as the rest of the community.

In short, the series is decent thus far, with a unique focus on a deeply underrepresented culture in Canadian media. It isn't without its flaws, but the good easily outweighs the bad. I'm looking forward to the next episodes, with all hope that it keeps getting better.

Ten episodes are not enough

North of North is the first show I have seen that takes place in a northern community. I love all the characters, but the actress playing Siaja really shines. She is amazing and her comedic timing and expressions are fun to watch. The writing is fun and light hearted. So many shows these days are dystopian and dark, as are our times, that it was a gift to find this ray of sunshine. This show is a refreshing addition to the CBC lineup. The show reminded me of Schitt's Creek to be honest. I really hope they get a second season. Ten episodes is definitely not enough of this absolute gem of a Canadian show.

Cheesy but good

Its basically Kitty XOXO but the north version over Korean. If you like one, good chances you'll like the other. I still enjoyed Kitty XOXO more for whatever reason though. It's much cheesier and much more drama. This was good and I liked the copy and paste culture that they added to it. With it would have been a bit more with it that way but it was still enough. The chill nature of the dad coming and not knowing is definitely all cinematic. I guessbpeople just easily ignore it for these kinds of shows, but it still bugs me. Haha. Its not greay but it's not bad.

Watched on Netflix on 4-17-2025.

North of North needs Southern exposure

Absolutely wonderful. Characters are real - actors wonderful - script witty/heartfelt with a social commentary unique to our southern understanding. Anne Lambe is luminous - Stacey Aglok MacDonald (created - written by) Alethea Arnaquq-Baril created by have created an irresistible series. Technically beautiful with exquisite cinematography. I am so proud of the producers - funding agencies and production team on every level imaginable. I wish for nothing but a big push worldwide so they can discover the common issues we all have. Most importantly North of North give us a chance to observe a culture we know little about. BRILLIANT.

What am I missing here?

The show looked kinda promising but I couldn't even go through the first episode. There may be extremely personal reasons behind it (like, being tired and weary of snow in daily life to the extent of not willing to be exposed to cold climates on screen) but I suspect there is also a notable discord between the premise and the overall vibe.

When the focus is ethnic / folkloric, one expects that to sneak into every aspect of the story and the dialogues. But for this show is about contemporary Inuit people, the authenticity remains only skin deep. That very same network of relationships can well be witnessed anywhere in North America, right? I mean, the dynamics were not far from what you'd see in a New York based rom-com or drama.

But maybe it's just me... Maybe my age shows when evaluating new stuff... Maybe, having been a devout fan of the legendary Northern Exposure (set in Alaska, not Canada, but still...) made me expect something to that effect.

It's been three decades since Northern Exposure has launced... Wow... Time flies by so fast...

Anyways, I feel like giving this a second chance but I still think something was off with the execution of the premise.

Artificial

The scenes are way too artificial and the characters superficial. The comedy was good in the fist scene, but most of the first episode lacks fun. The scenerie, the ambientation and the ideal of showing an inuit village is awesome. However, the characters are too unidimensional. The series is way too focused on the protagonist, who is not that interesting. The fisrt episode shows too few from the others. We know king ting is a jerk, bun is sweet.... the mother of the protagonist had potential, but most of the others were flat. The writting lacked compeling objectives for each person. The first episode should present us to characters and compel us to continue and not to stop.

Heartwarming and inspiring

North of North is an absolute gem that deserves all the attention it can get! The show is captivating, not just because of the breathtaking beauty of the Arctic backdrop, which creates an almost ethereal setting, but also due to the remarkable characters that bring this world to life.

Each character is beautifully crafted and resonates with authenticity, making them endearing and relatable. Their individual stories are compelling and add depth to the overall narrative. The representation of vibrant indigenous culture is seamlessly woven into the plot, showcasing traditions, values, and perspectives that are not often highlighted in mainstream media. This authenticity enriches the viewing experience and fosters a deeper understanding of the community.

The cinematography is stunning, capturing the stark yet majestic landscapes that serve as both a backdrop and a character in its own right. The interplay of nature and the personal struggles of the characters creates a poignant and immersive storytelling experience.

I am eagerly awaiting the second season-and dare I say, I'd love to see a third as well! North of North is a must-watch that beautifully combines culture, emotion, and breathtaking visuals. It has truly captured my heart, and I'm hoping Netflix recognizes its potential for an encore!

Charming

This is a wonderful, joyous show! I heartily recommend it!

It is neither cookie cutter nor pablum. It is a joyful upbeat show with great likeable characters but it is not not lacking in human insight.

Although it shows us a culture that is not super familiar, the characters feel like friends. It does not shy away from some darker subjects but leaves us laughing. It is the kind of show the whole family can watch but it doesnt talk down to us.

These are humanly flawed and very loveable prople.

This is very good TV. It covers a lot of ground but doesn't overwhelm us.

I sure hope this show does another season!

Slick Coming-Of-Age Romantic Inuk Show

It's Sex and The City for Inuks so it should be Sex And The Iceberg. It's 'North of North' and it's an emphasis on a young women trying to find love and dealing with living in a remote destination.

There is plenty of indigenous awareness with costumes on and ritualistic natures. It is very over-produced and slick which is what happens with modern production.

Story-wise it is very drab but it works and it is very feminine-centric but for me it's far too corny and that's where it lets itself down.

It's a great show for young females and we definitely need more under-represented cultres on Netflix. Maybe a Sami one next?

One word obsessed

I absolutely love this show. I watched all the episodes in one day. It was such a a wonderful show. I love all the characters. We need at least 10 more seasons!!! Netflix needs to order way more seasons now. This is quality viewing. Stellar show. Love learning about the Inuit people. The main character is someone you root for. The actress playing her is amazing. Love her mom and dad and their story line. This show has a lot of heart and obviously comedy. This woman has decided she wants to be treated and certain way and wants more for her life! It's commendable and she is handling it as well as she can with some laughter and hijinks. I truly hope this show continues I need more episodes now!!!

Nicely representing the far North!

It's amazing to see the far North appearing in a good show! The show's town is fictional and called "Ice Cove", but it is almost entirely filmed in the real-life far Northern community of Iqaluit, Nunavut (Canada).

North of North is cute, clever, and full of really likeable characters already, and it's only two episodes in, at time of this review. Excellently cast, and fantastic that the main character (Siaja) is played by Anna Lambe, who is herself an Inuk woman from Iqaluit.

Big appreciation for Inuit culture being well, genuinely, and just naturally repped throughout, from the language (spoken and written in parts here and there), clothing, womens' hand and facial tattoos, traditional games, and more. Traditional ways are blended with modern (colonial) ways, which is accurately what you will find in this part of the Northern Arctic and Subarctic region, today.

I'm really hoping this show sticks around; I'd love to see much more of this cast and this story!

Just started and WOW

A friend recommended this series to me and I just watched the first 2 episodes and loved it. It's fun exploring this Inuit community as the characters go through the same ups and downs of life we go through everywhere. I really like the lead character. The struggles she is going through are very common, but in this tiny community I'm curious how it will all go, and what various roles the other members of the community will play. She is craving her own independence from a life that seems too traditional for our current times, so I look forward to seeing how she makes her dreams come true. It's taking all my self control to not binge it all at once and make it last 4 days. Hope there will be many more seasons in our future.

Reason I keep my Gem account

This show was a hit at my house! Definitely something fresh for CBC's Gem. I keep my account around to stream it, because I'm hooked. One of the few shows nowadays that I can see myself rewatching in full. Such a fun blend of humour and moving family. I just love the cast too, their chemistry is really great. You're simultaneously rooting for Siaja and laughing so hard at all the bumps in the road. I'm really glad they offered this show and took the time to make it so well. Here's hoping it will have more seasons to keep it coming. If they ever came out with a hard copy DVD, I'd be thrilled about it.

Very fresh

This is a totally wonderful show. It is set in such a unique location with such unique plot line and dialogue. It is beyond refreshing. The music is very fun. The sense of ironic commentary is a highlight. Cast is amazing. Wardrobe is also wonderful. Well written comedy lines are well delivered. The cultural comedy is extremely clever. The main actress is fabulous in her role as the mother and wife who is ready to move into other roles. The photography is spectacular at times and really allows us to get the flavor of the community. It is worth a watch. Everything about the show is eye-opening and in my opinion delightful.the character of bun is delightful.

LOVE the characters

Especially Jay Ryan's character of Alistar .. He is so wonderful. I loved him in Beauty & the Beast series too.

I was delighted to see him in the cast. The other cast members are very good although not known to. Very interesting premise, much like Northern Exposure vibes.

I am not a fan of hunting though so that is the only drawback to the storyline.

Female leads and supporting cast are all very good.

I am looking forward to seeing more. I am glad to see something other than doctors, lawyers and criminal storylines for a change.

Should be fun to see what comes next and hope Jay Ryan is a steady character in storylines.

Such an amazing heartfelt comedy!

I rarely like comedies that much, but this is an exception. A true gem. It has everything I'm looking for in a TV series. It is funny, heartfelt, it touches significant social issues in such a beautiful subtle way, the cinematography is A M A Z I N G and even the fashion sense!!... I mean who knew Inuit People had such a great fashion sense. Even the background music is top tier(I was shazaming everything). I gave it a chance cause Jay Ryan is in it and I know he picks great projects and I love his acting range and I was shocked of how good of a TV show this is. The lead actress is wonderful, the well known actors (J. Ryan and M. Rajskub) are great in their respective roles and some of the other breakthrough actors are really good!! (Maika Harper, B. Clark). I binge watched the whole series in a day and I really really hope for a season 2!! I couldn't recommend it more! 10 out of 10.
