On paper, everything about Searchlight’s upcoming remake of the 1989 dark comedy, The War Of The Roses looks to be in order. You get Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch as the unhappy couple, delivering withering put-downs in a steadily escalating conflict that gets rather out of hand.

Plus, it has Jay Roach at the helm, a filmmaker who knows how to craft a big studio comedy, not to mention a script from Poor Things and The Favourite writer Tony McNamara. This doesn’t look like it will have the frisson of the Danny DeVito film that starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, though. The original War Of The Roses was a continuation of the chemistry the duo perfected in 1984’s Romancing The Stone and the following year’s sequel, The Jewel Of The Nile.

Searchlight Pictures has slated Jay Roach’s new comedy The Roses for an August 29 release. Based on the novel by Warren Adler, the film boasts an all-star cast which includes Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman. Now, the studio has given us a new look at the film with the first official trailer. The film also stars Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao, Belinda Bromilow, and Kate McKinnon. Tony McNamara (Poor Things) wrote the script. Jay Roach, who directed the Austin Powers and Meet the Parents movies, helms this retelling.

The official synopsis for The Roses reads:

“Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites.

Searchlight Pictures is behind a new take on the 1989 romantic comedy “War of The Roses” as the studio has released a first-look trailer for “The Roses,” starring the duo of Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”) and Benedict Cumberbatch (“Power of The Dog”).

While we often roll our eyes at Hollywood’s lack of originality and continued reliance on remakes, we’re looking forward to Fox Searchlight’s upcoming remake of the 1989 dark comedy, The War Of The Roses.

It has Jay Roach at the helm, a filmmaker who knows how to craft a big studio comedy, not to mention a script from Poor Things and The Favourite writer Tony McNamara, who imbued both of those films humour that ranged from slapstick to biting to outright shocking.

Benedict Cumberbatch became a world-famous actor after his career breakthroughs in BBC’s Sherlock and his long-running role as Doctor Stephen Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the announcement of two upcoming Avengers films, namely Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, Benedict’s potential involvement in them has come under renewed attention, and in a January 2025 interview with Variety, Benedict finally gave some answers on his future at the MCU.

The actor revealed that he will no longer be present in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday, thanks in part to the retooling the movie received after Jonathan Majors‘ firing. He will, however, have a major role in Avengers: Secret Wars. The conversation wasn’t limited to his future in the MCU, however. Benedict also spoke about his upcoming film, The Thing With Feathers, and how he approaches acting.

I’m unsure what to make of Prime Video’s You’re Cordially Invited. This film has a fantastic pedigree behind it. First, Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon are two reliable comedy stars; this is the first film they have starred in together. They share excellent antagonistic chemistry.

Another factor is You’re Cordially Invited’s director, Nicholas Stoller, who has made some of the best comedy movies of this century, including Forgetting Sarah Marshall, the Neighbors franchise of films, and the unfairly underseen (and box office failure) Bros.

However, you have a likable comedy that is too recycled and plays it too safe for its good, never living up to its War of the Roses premise. Albeit, a Saturday Night Live-esque version of such.

Sophie Turner and Kit Harington, who starred together in ‘Game of Thrones,’ are reuniting for ‘The Dreadful,’ a gothic horror film. The movie, written and directed by Natasha Kermani, is set during the War of the Roses. It follows Anne (Turner) and her mother-in-law, Morwen, who live a tough, isolated life.

Their world changes when a man (Harington) from their past returns, triggering a series of events that alter Anne’s life.

The War of the Roses was a series of civil wars in England between 1455 and 1487, fought between two rival factions: the House of Lancaster (represented by a red rose) and the House of York (represented by a white rose). The conflict was over control of the English throne, ultimately leading to the rise of the Tudor dynasty.

Benedict Cumberbatch isn’t trying to solve the case of why he’s considered to be a sex symbol.

Cumberbatch, whose tenure on BBC series “Sherlock” propelled him to viral thirst fandom, told Variety that he knows he’s not akin to Brad Pitt or Leonardo DiCaprio in terms of his appearance.

“I’m not Brad, I’m not Leonardo, I’m not a typical movie star,” Cumberbatch said. “People were scrambling for ‘Why is he at all attractive to us?’ But for me to guess and try to understand that is so fucking weirdly navel-gazing. I’m not sitting around thinking, ‘Why am I sexy?’”

He added, “I worry about myself in the mirror as I age, like every other fucker does.”

And don’t say that Cumberbatch is a celebrity either.

“It’s so derogatory,” he said of the term, “and just lumps anyone famous together. Am I a ‘celebrated’ person?...

Anyone who has watched HBO’s Game of Thrones or has read George R.R. Martin’s novels has gotten a hint of how the storyline is rooted deep in history. But it took a real nerd to figure out the clear connection between A Song of Ice and Fire and the War of the Roses, even before the author cited his source material.

According to George R.R. Martin’s interview, the author admitted taking inspiration from several historical novels, including Thomas B. Costain’s A History of the Plantagenets, for his fantasy series. Writing the two main houses of the show, Lannisters and Starks, based on the Lancasters and the Yorks, Martin admitted being inspired by the legendary English Civil War.

Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch has teased his upcoming remake of Danny DeVito's beloved 35-year-old satirical black comedy-drama film The War of Roses, calling it "a joy to make." Announced earlier this year, Cumberbatch's The Roses is directed by Jay Roach and also stars MCU alum Olivia Colman.

Per Variety, Cumberbatch discussed The Roses and his other upcoming projects at the Red Sea Film Festival. The actor stated that the movie had "pretty cool ingredients" in his "amazing" co-star Colman and Tony McNamara's "great script." The War of the Roses reimagining will mark Cumberbatch's first role as the lead in a comedy, and he has found the experience gratifying. "We'll see if it'll get there, but it was a joy to make," he said. Produced by Searchlight Pictures, the movie's cast includes Ncuti Gatwa, Kate McKinnon, Andy Samberg, Sunita Mani, Zoë Chao, Jamie Demetriou, and Belinda Bromilow.

McKinnon and Samberg are both established comedy stars who’ve led films themselves, so grabbing them both in supporting roles is a real coup.

If you say the phrase "war of the roses," chances are that most movie watchers will think of Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as a combative couple rather than any historical bobbins between the houses of Lancaster and York.
