Memorizing Alison

JP Allen is one of the most exciting indy filmmakers in North America. His scripts are lean, full of mystery and manage to be actively poetic. The gorgeous aloof and enticing city of San Francisco is always a prominent character in his films. JP is masterful at weaving dialogue with imagery and he allows for silence and reflection in a way that is captivating and intimate. I learn something every time I watch one of his films (as a writer). He is audaciously original and panders to nobody, yet manages to be utterly entertaining.

Honest and thoughtful work from the actors, and as always, a terrific soundtrack. Beautifully produced.

Memoizing Alison methodically hooked me as its slow burn revealed unexpected twists through the streets and cool locations of San Francisco: the Sutro Baths, a mesmerizing pond, but I particularly loved the circular geometric courtyard somewhere in the city that swirled us around as if we were stuck inside Chris' mind (J. P. Allen), as he searched for answers. His memory loss circle in a maze to find out what really happened to Alison (Allison Ewing). Told through flashbacks while underscored with the rad music of John Morris Dole. Cathy Montosa and. J. P. Allen have created a well-written and acted indie film, which kept me engaged and guessing right up until the very end.
