This film is quite realistic and gritty in how it handles the story of a serial killer who targets prostitutes. In fact, while I normally try to be glib in my reviews, this movie kind of left me disjointed, so the thoughts are going to be all over the place.
There are a couple of detectives investigating the case, but it doesn't really feel like their story. Most of the focus is on the killer (played by the director, Renaissance Jones) and his interactions with others. One scene in particular, with a prostitute (played by Jessa Flux, who was a bright spot in a cheesy supernatural horror film I watched previously) trying to flee from the murderer, was all too similar to actual things that happened in the real-life case of the cannibal killer Jeffrey Dahmer. There are also side characters wrestling with how to act and who to trust.
There were many actors that were surprisingly good for such a low budget (Jones and Flux were already mentioned, Angela Irons and Angelina Elizabeth also spring to mind), several performing quite adequately, and maybe one or two others that fell short. The background noise levels were often inconsistent when switching between different characters in the same scene, which is caused by only having one camera and filming different angles of the same scene at different times.
People who like watching dramas about true crime should be pleased with how accurately this came out. This certainly isn't light viewing, but it's a refreshing change from the mad slashers that target teens for no good reason and supernatural horrors that never seem to make much sense.
