Oscar has its new voters.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences handed out its annual invitations to membership today, with 534 new invitees. If all of them accept, the new overall membership would be 11,120, of which 10,143 would be eligible to vote for Oscars and run for governance elections.

Among those on the list are newly minted Oscar winners Mikey Madison (Best Actress for Anora) and Kieran Culkin. Among all the invitees this year 91 are past Oscar nominees including 26 winners. The prominent star names include Ariana Grande, Dave Bautista, Jodie Comer, Jason Momoa, Aubrey Plaza, Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, Gillian Anderson, Stephen Graham, Andrew Scott, Danielle Deadwyler, and on and on.

The Academy said 41% of the new class are women, 45% belong to underrepresented communities and 55% are from 60 countries and territories outside the United States. If all accept, it would result in an overall AMPAS membership of 35% women,...

Among this group of contenders are three television programs that dominated the 2024 Emmy Awards: Shōgun (Season 1), FX's Japanese historical epic drama; Hacks (Season 3), Max's laugh-out-loud comedy about an aging stand-up comedian; and Baby Reindeer, Netflix's limited series about a young comic who gets stalked. The Peabody Awards unveiled the final batch of nominees on Thursday. Nominations for the Arts, Children’s/Youth, Entertainment and Interactive & Immersive categories were announced by the Board of Jurors, recognizing “the most captivating and impactful stories released in broadcasting and streaming media” in 2024.

The nominations have been revealed for the 2025 GLAAD Media Awards, and one critically acclaimed LGBTQ+ film is notably absent from the pack of nominees.

The annual awards ceremony will return for a 36th year in 2025. According to GLAAD, it’s goal is to “recognize and honor fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community in an ever-expanding and media landscape.”

On Wednesday (January 22), the organization revealed the crop of nominees that would be honored at the ceremony. While projects such as Wicked and Queer were notably featured, Netflix’s Emilia Perez was left off the list.

The snub comes after GLAAD declared that the movie, which stars Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez and trans actress Karla Sofia Gascon, was “not good trans representation” in a November 2024 essay. The story included reviews from transgender film critics and noted that “inauthentic portrayals of trans people are offensive and even dangerous.”

GLAAD has unveiled the nominees for its 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards, with Variety securing two noms for outstanding print article (senior entertainment writer Adam B. Vary’s piece on Joe Locke) and magazine overall coverage.

Other nominees include “Wicked,” “Queer,” “Love Lies Bleeding,” “My Old Ass,” “Abbott Elementary,” “Hacks,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” “Fancy Dance,” “Mother of the Bride,” “Baby Reindeer,” “Selling Sunset,” “Queer Eye” and “Real Housewives of New York City.” There are a total of 318 nominees across 33 categories at this year’s Awards.

The GLAAD Media Awards is a yearly event that honors outstanding, accurate and inclusive representations of LGBTQ+ people and issues in film, television, gaming, publishing, stage productions, music, journalism and more.

“The GLAAD Media Awards were created nearly four decades ago to champion LGBTQ stories amid a deeply hostile and unsafe time for our community,” said GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis.

The American Society of Cinematographers today focused in on the delayed nominations for its 39th annual ASC Awards, which celebrate the year’s best in cinematography in seven categories spanning feature films, TV, documentaries and music videos. See the list below.

Vying for the marquee Theatrical Feature Film prize are the DPs behind Nosferatu, Wicked, The Brutalist, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Maria and A Complete Unknown. The number of nominees in the category can vary from five to 10, depending on vote percentage. The last time there were seven was in 2014.

Winners will be feted February 23 during 39th annual ASC Awards at the Beverly Hilton. The ceremony will be livestreamed at theasc.com.

Producer and Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy is set for the ASC’s 2025 Board of Governors Award, and longtime Sidney Lumet collaborator Andrzej Bartkowiak will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Apple TV+ documentary “Girls State” and the HBO doc series “Ren Faire” led all projects in nominations in the Cinema Eye Honors broadcast categories, which were announced on Thursday in Los Angeles.

“Girls State” was nominated in the Broadcast Film category and also for its editing and cinematography. “Ren Faire” was also nominated in those last two categories, as well as for Nonfiction Series.

Other broadcast films and series with multiple nominations included Netflix’s “America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders,” Apple’s “The Enfield Poltergeist,” HBO’s “Telemarketers” and National Geographic’s “Photographer.”

It has been a little over thirty years since the retrial convictions of Erik and Lyle Menendez. In the sensational trial, the siblings, who were convicted of parricide, were sentenced to life in prison. According to the new Netflix documentary, The Menendez Brothers, they deserve to be released from jail.

The film offers very little reasoning as to why the brothers deserve this sentence for murdering their parents. The main point is that they point to the mistrial, where evidence of sexual and physical abuse at the hands of José and Kitty Menendez was not allowed during the prosecution’s second attempt.

The filmmakers want to put the parents on trial, not the assailants. This is fine, only if you offer the same type of microscope on those convicted of the crime as well.
