I can only imagine that some of the bad reviews are coming from sensitive white people who don't like seeing women or people of colour in lead roles or their stories told at all? And I say this as a white man.
This show is genuinely funny. Ra Chapman commits fully and you can tell the story means something to her and the team who made it.
Admittedly the show starts off bumpy but so much of that is just the show finding it's feet... did anyone see Buffy season 1? Hello! It was MEH-AF but then went on to be one of the best shows of all time. So yes the first episode takes a while to get into but it ABSOLUTELY get's better with each passing minute. By episode 3 I was almost pissing myself with laughter.
I would definitely give this a go if you want to watch an unapologetically funny and edgy series.
Bonus Round - It gives an insight into a specific experience that you would most likely never otherwise learn about - adoption of Korean born children. It's always nice to learn :)

I came back to delete my previous review where I said the "show was good" to write a new one on this because after watching the show again almost a year later and it's still awful. My eyes were just poorly opened and it showed. The only good episode was the final 10 minutes of the finale. Seriously hope if abc wants to go again, they don't.
It tries too hard to be "edgy" tries too hard to be "funny" and just comes across as a poorly written, poor excuse for a tv show, such a waste of funding, it is one of ABC's very rare fails.
This isn't aimed at anyone who worked on it or was in it but it's not that great, and wastes a script and it comes across as mean spirited and nasty.
So skip this one you're not missing much or anything really.

So this reduces her attraction to white men as being part of her growing up as an adopted child and anyone that dates her that is white is reduced to white dudes with an Asian fetish? As someone that is a poc and married to an Asian woman, is it because I have an Asian fetish or maybe she has a fetish for someone with darker skin like me? Oh but hurr she's a betrayal to her people because she didn't want to be with someone Asian!
It's called preferences. Some people are attracted to what they're attracted to. This whole quest to pop her Asian cherry is ridiculous. Is this what passes for intelligent shows nowadays? Or are people too scared to call something dreadful as being dreadful? This borders on the worst stereotypes I've ever seen. Like the first episode with the guy and his Asian inspired apartment, really? That's just awful. Btw I never looked for an Asian partner, I just happened to meet one and it ended up working out for both us as we fell in love. But both of us dated people from varying backgrounds of ethnicities. As a matter of fact, she has Asian parents and really didn't want to date or marry one, because that was her preference. To turn it into some diaspora crap is comical. Not everything is that deep.

Not sure why there are reviews of triggered snowflakes getting upset about the show cause it's funny, nothing is mean spirited or pandering it's written about someone actual experience and is pretty true to life
Chris pang is amazing as always and the star/creator did an amazing job of showing what internalized racism is like and the character of Charlie was a real highlight and reflected many things I've felt myself.
If you are after a funny does of really life it's a good show for you so ignore the people claiming it's trying to hard (doesn't remotely give that vibe) and that are triggered by stories they may not personally relate to.

Idk if it just me or I watched the entire show in ABC Iview cause I had nothing better to, and I would like my time back please. The positive review thats here criticizing the people who didn't like it because they're not used to women being on screen? No it's just the show being really really bad. Women on screen in comedies aren't the problem, it was a show that was trying way to hard to be funny that it comes across as rude and mean spirited for one.
The other? It's just not that good.camera work is decent, and some of the characters are great, I just don't want to waste my time on this again. Watch something else. Fisk is funnier.
