The Oscars may be in the rearview mirror, but eight of this year's Academy Award acting nominees could find themselves competing once again ... at the 2025 Emmys.
Mikey Madison and Zoe Saldaña, the respective Oscar winners for Anora (Best Actress) and Emilia Pérez (Best Supporting Actress), will be seeking Emmy nominations this year for vastly different TV projects. Madison will submit for the 50-year-old sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live and the limited series Lady in the Lake, while Saldaña will be eligible for Season 2 of the spy thriller Lioness.
Speaking of SNL, Timothée Chalamet and Ariana Grande are two other recent Oscar nominees who also hosted the program this season. Chalamet earned an Oscar nod for his portrayal of music superstar Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, and Grande made magic happen in Wicked as Glinda the Good Witch.

The San Quentin Film Festival, which in October became the world’s first-ever film festival inside of a prison, is returning for a second year.
The festival was founded by Rahsaan “New York” Thomas, a filmmaker who was previously incarcerated at the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, and San Quentin volunteer Cori Thomas (no relation).
“For 2025, the goal is to expand the impact by being more inclusive,” Rahsaan said in a statement. “That starts with finding ways for people incarcerated beyond the walls of San Quentin to participate too.”
“Making it possible for people to experience this population on the basis of what they can do, rather than what they have done, was everything,” Cori said. “Several of the incarcerated filmmakers who participated in the festival have since left prison and now hold internships and paid positions in the industry — something they could have only dreamed of before. For years, the Oscars have been riddled with controversy and criticism for being too intertwined with industry politics, trends, and narratives instead of being genuinely praiseworthy of ‘artworks’ that deserve the praise. Well, this year was no different. First, it was the controversy surrounding Emilia Pérez and its lead star Karla Sofía Gascón that made this year’s Academy Awards one of the most contentious, lately, it has been Anora’s Oscar wins that have been guiding this discourse.
Mark Eydelshteyn and Mikey Madison in Anora | Credits: Neon
Anora was rather a surprise winner at the Oscars 2025, as it took home several wins. However, many cinephiles continue to believe that the true standout of the year was Sing Sing. Not only was it unfairly overlooked but its alleged Oscar snubs showcase what Oscar campaigns and studio politics can do to a film worthy of accolades for its profound social impact.

Actors love to talk about authenticity, but if that were all it took, we wouldn't need them at all -- cops, lawyers, and singles on the prowl could just play themselves. There's more to it than that, of course, but sometimes it doesn't hurt to have a background in the role being played. Many former Marines have done well as actors, using their discipline for our entertainment. And as it turns out, many thespians with actual criminal records do a great job of playing crooks onscreen. As 2024's Oscar-nominated film "Sing Sing" depicts, theater programs can serve as therapy, and serve to reform offenders.
Throughout the history of the movie business, real-life criminals have found the movie business to be more comfortable than their former under-the-table careers. Audiences, in turn, can often tell when a guy onscreen really looks like he could kill or beat you. In some cases, showbiz...

She thinks her ship has come in, but their love is impossible because his parents will not allow it. So she has to fight for what she wants, as she’s always done. The weekend of March 21, 2025, marks a relatively quiet weekend for new releases, but that does not mean there are not some outstanding titles worth checking out. Notably, sci-fi and horror fans should be pumped to check out the latest from Flying Lotus, Ash, starring fan favorite Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad. The highly contentious and controversial Snow White live-action remake starring Rachel Zegler is set to sink or swim in theaters, with critics, pundits, and online personalities tuned in to see how the film fares.
Also in theaters, The Alto Knights is a gritty crime thriller starring Robert De Niro, and Bill Skarsgård faces off against Anthony Hopkins in the psychological horror film Locked. This weekend, streaming also brings a few notable gems. We will go over what you need to watch this weekend, including why Ash is our top pick.

Exclusive: Grant Rosenmeyer, Sean San José (Sing Sing), Nora Dunn, Katherine Cunningham (Yellowstone) and Alexis Allotta (Happily Never After) are starring in the semi-autobiographical drama Behind the Eight-Ball. The pic reps the feature directorial debut of Nathan Israileff.
Loosely inspired by Israileff’s experiences, Behind the Eight-Ball follows Trevor (Rosenmeyer) a high-functioning cocaine addict whose spiraling substance abuse threatens his career and closest relationships – forcing him to confront his demons and fight for redemption as his life unravels around him.
Says the filmmaker, “The film is a ‘love letter’ to functional addicts who are afraid to speak up or admit embarrassment for their ongoing issues, letting them know they are not alone and the depression they feel is felt by many.”
Israileff and Rosenmeyer are producing through their companies Artisanal Interrobang and Florida Hill respectively alongside producer Katelyn Henslin.

Not every film with good reviews becomes a major commercial hit, and not all films with bad reviews are unpopular. Just like last year there have been a series of examples, including Furiosa: A Mad Max Story, The Fall Guy, and Red One.
Now, Netflix's latest film The Electric State is experiencing a similar trend. Although the film didn't receive a theatrical release and it headed straight to Netflix, the early reviews ahead of the Mar. 14 release called it "one of the worst movies of the year." The official numbers prove otherwise, as Tudumcrowns The Electric State the biggest film of the week.
For the week between Mar. 10 and 16,The Electric State amassed 25.2 million views and 53.8 million hours viewed. That is a huge feat considering the movie had only 2 full days to achieve that before Netflix stopped counting.
It became the No. 1 movie in 47 countries, including the U.S.

Conan O'Brien appears to be the Academy's next golden boy as he is officially returning to preside over the Oscars in 2026 following a successful stint at the 97th Oscars ceremony that took place earlier this month. The news was shared by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on X/Twitter on Mar. 17, aka St. Patrick's Day, confirming that the comedian will take to the stage for the 98th Academy Awards next year. The star-studded shindig will be hosted out of the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, on Mar. 15, 2026, so O'Brien has plenty of time to prepare for his sophomore turn.
"Forget the pot of gold – this St. Patrick's Day, we're giving you something even better. Conan O'Brien is officially returning to host the 98th Oscars!" the Academy wrote in the post (shared below). However, this wasn't the only comment that was made on the matter. Academy CEO...

Critics Hated The Russo Brothers' The Electric State, But the Audience Score Tells a Different Story
Netflix's latest release, The Electric State, has all the qualities of a major blockbuster. It comes from a big studio, it has a stellar cast and critically acclaimed directors, and, despite the studio's reluctance for theatrical releases, it has a major budget.
However, The Electric State debuted with one of the worst ratings of the year. The sci-fi film debuted with an abysmal score of 10% on Rotten Tomatoes, a number that slightly increased to 14%, still a major disappointment. Following its official release on the platform, the audience score couldn't be more different, as it's over five times better than the critics' score.
While most of the critics called The Electric State a bad movie, the audience fully disagreed. Following its Mar. 14 release on Netflix, The Electric State has an audience approval score of 76%. While the score is not exactly a reason to start celebrating and greenlighting a sequel just yet,...

Three years after their last feature film, “The Gray Man,” premiered on Netflix and one year before they make their return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directors Anthony and Joe Russo are back. Their latest offering, “The Electric State,” is a sci-fi blockbuster with a hefty price tag. The film, which continues the Russos’ ongoing creative partnership with Netflix, has a reported budget of $320 million — making it one of the most expensive movies ever made.
Only films based on pre-existing pieces of intellectual property typically get that kind of financial support in Hollywood these days. Is “The Electric State” based on a book, though? Here is what you should know about the new, expensive Netflix film’s origins.
Is “The Electric State” based on a book?
Yes! “The Electric State” is not, however, based on a traditional book. It is, instead, loosely based on a 2018 illustrated novel by acclaimed Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag.

A24 has a long list of movies lined up for 2025, starting with Opus, which will hit theaters on March 14. With its immense popularity in the indie movie scene, more mainstream artists are eager to collaborate with A24. It was primarily a film distribution company but later ventured into production with the Oscar-winning film Moonlight.
More recently, the studio is known for critically acclaimed films like MaXXXine, Sing Sing, A Different Man, We Live in Time, Heretic, Queer, The Brutalist, and Babygirl. The Oscar-winning film Everything Everywhere All at Once is the highest-grossing film from the studio.

One of the most talented names in Hollywood, Adrien Brody most recently made headlines for his win at the Oscars. Brody nabbed the Academy Award for Best Actor for his work in The Brutalist, making the award his second Oscar win. Competing for the award were Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave) and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice), all of whom Brody successfully beat out.
Although now hailed as one of the best actors in film, a lesser popularized fact about Adrien Brody is that he has starred in some major box office flops over the years. One which takes the cake is Brody's 2018 film Air Strike. Given that he made a brief appearance alongside Bruce Willis and teamed up with Mel Gibson (a producer on the film) for the project, it was likely that Brody did not dream of the work going up in flames.

Red carpet styling can’t make a bad movie good, but it can make a good one hard to ignore. An attention-grabbing look can center a project in an elevated conversation that can drive box office, awards and, yes, clothing sales.
That’s because of stylists. Out of the hundreds of red carpet tastemakers working in Hollywood, the ones on this list — coincidentally THR’s 15th since debuting the franchise in 2011 — are selected based on several factors. Because this is The Hollywood Reporter, the star power of the clients the stylists work with, the aesthetics they present on the red carpet, and the influence they wield — note Law Roach and Zendaya getting the internet to obsess over every Challengers fit — are paramount. And let’s be honest: Saint Laurent received more attention from Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña on the red carpet than from actually producing Emilia Pérez, the film they were in.

Ever wondered why the Oscars seem to have such a complicated relationship with Black talent? The Academy Awards might be Hollywood’s most prestigious night, but its golden history is tarnished with allegations of bias and discrimination.
From the viral #OscarsSoWhite hashtag that exploded on social media to the awkward ceremony moments that had us all cringing on our couches, the film industry’s biggest celebration has repeatedly found itself in hot water.

The pattern is hard to ignore – groundbreaking Black performances mysteriously overlooked, Black directors shut out of nominations, and the weird tendency to reward certain types of Black stories while ignoring others. Let’s dive into the countdown of ten times when many believe the Academy showed its true colors – and they weren’t gold.

Much like the three-and-a-half hour epic The Brutalist, Adrien Brody’s Oscar-winning speech at the Oscars went on longer than anticipated. Brody, who won the Oscar for Best Actor on Sunday, discussed the fragile profession that is acting, the career-topping accolade, and his talented co-stars and director for a record-breaking five minutes and 36 seconds, shattering the Guinness World Record for longest acceptance speech in the award ceremony’s history. Brody reacted to his long-winded speech in a social media post Monday, joking that he’d keep it brief.

Adrien Brody may have claimed the Best Actor title at this year’s Oscars, but the golden trophy in his hands? That doesn’t technically belong to him.
Of course, that won’t stop The Brutalist star from proudly displaying it on his mantle, at least for now. After a fierce competition against Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice), and Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Brody emerged victorious for his portrayal of László Tóth, an architect striving to rebuild his life in America.
Adrien Brody takes extra time to call out Jew-hate and racism while accepting his second Oscar for Best Actor.
He also deserves the award for Best Humanity at the Oscars.
Thank you, Adrien.

One of the craziest awards seasons in Oscar history concluded on Sunday with the coronation of Sean Baker’s “Anora,” a comedy about an outer-boroughs sex worker that was shot in guerrilla fashion for just $6 million. Despite its art-house origins, this most independent of indie films was celebrated as the year’s best by the Hollywood establishment. That’s a credit to Baker’s talent and to Neon, the studio that guided 2019’s “Parasite” to a similarly unorthodox victory when it became the first non-English-language film to take the best picture prize. By choosing “Anora,” the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, once dismissed as old and out of touch, has demonstrated that it is open to movies that push the envelope, in terms of both language (there are more than 400 uses of the F-word in the film) and sexuality.

The 97th Academy Awards have come and gone, and with it comes the end of awards season for now. After what might be the most controversial build up to awards season, courtesy of Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón's unsavory past tweets, The Brutalist being caught up in a confusing press storm on the use of A.I. in the editing process, and notable snubs of films like Challengers, Nosferatu, and Sing Sing. At the end of the evening, the credits started to roll on the Oscars, and it seemed like the most fun telecast in quite some time. Hollywood's biggest night ended with a 3.9 earthquake that might well have been the aftermath of the positive reaction to Anora winning Best Picture and host Conan O'Brien.

The 97th Academy Awards were filled with plenty of exciting wins, both for bigger blockbusters and for independent cinema. It was Sean Baker's Anora that took home the big prize of the night with its Best Picture win, along with awards for Director, Editing, Actress in a Leading Role, and Original Screenplay. However, Brady Corbet's The Brutalist also won in significant categories, taking home the Oscars for Best Cinematography, Original Score, and Actor for Adrien Brody's performance as László Tóth. As it turns out, Brody's acceptance speech wasn't just long – it was the longest acceptance speech in Oscars history.
According to Guinness World Records, Adrien Brody's big win at the 97th Academy Awards for Best Actor in a Leading Role was extra notable because of Brody's acceptance speech. Clocking in at 5 minutes and 40 seconds, Brody's became the longest in Oscars history, beating out actress Greer Garson,...

Adrien Brody joined the coveted club of two-time Oscar winners last night after picking up the Best Actor award for his role in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist.
With his lengthy acceptance speech, the New York-born actor also joined the much more obscure contingent of Academy Award winners to clock extended minutes at the Academy podium as they accepted their awards.
Brody spoke for 5 minutes and 40 seconds at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday. The Guinness World Records (Gwr) currently cites Greer Garson’s 1943 Best Actress acceptance speech as the longest in Academy history at 5 minutes and 30 seconds. This would mean Brody’s is now the longest, but there’s some debate about the Gwr figure. Some historians have clocked the full length of Garson’s speech around the seven-minute mark; however, only partial audio recordings of the speech remain. The Academy has a 3-minute 56-second transcript of the speech on its online archive.

Adrien Brody secured his second Academy Award for Best Actor on Sunday for his performance in The Brutalist, playing Hungarian architect László Tóth, a Holocaust survivor seeking a new life in America. Directed by Brady Corbet, the film was nominated in ten categories, including Best Picture.
Backstage, Brody addressed the significance of the film’s themes. “I think we all know that it’s an important time to recognize that there’s no place for intolerance,” he said. “I’m oddly receiving recognition for representing a time in history where we witness racism and oppression … [we] must learn from the past.”
He reflected on the personal connection between his own family’s history and the film’s story. “My grandparents’ struggles and their loss and their resilience have paved the way for my own good fortune,” he said. “And I have an opportunity to honor them in this film. The truths...

Just a week ago, the 2025 SAG Awards, which took place after voting for the 2025 Oscars ended, had pundits wondering if precursor wins by Anora, Mikey Madison and Adrien Brody meant that they might not be bound for Oscars glory. SAG Awards wins by Conclave (best cast), Demi Moore (best actress) and Timothée Chalamet (best actor) led to speculation that Conclave, Moore and Chalamet could win big at the Academy Awards.
But it turns out the Oscars were on board with Anora, Madison and Brody. Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner was named best picture; Madison, in a surprise, nabbed best actress over veteran Demi Moore (who numerous pundits predicted would win with her first Oscar nomination after a long career and wins at the SAG Awards, Critics Choice and Golden Globes); and Brody defeated Chalamet.
Additionally, all three films — Conclave, The Substance and A Complete Unknown — seemingly underperformed Sunday night.

After a chaotic and, at times unpredictable awards season, it all came down to this –– the big show. Hosted by Conan O'Brien, the 97th Academy Awards happened Sunday evening in Los Angeles, and Anora emerged as Best Picture.
With a surprising sweep of several major categories –– also including Best Director, Original Screenplay and Editing for filmmaker Sean Baker (who becomes the first person to win four Oscars in one night) and a somewhat surprising win for star Mikey Madison over Demi Moore –– Anora became the little indie that could.
This was a year that the academy members chose to spread the Oscar love –– The Brutalist's Adrien Brody was named Best Actor, while Lol Crawley won Cinematography and Daniel Blumberg's score saw him take the stage for an emotional, nervous speech.
Wicked, meanwhile, won Costume Design and Production Design, Dune 2 took Sound and Visual Effects, while Emilia Pérez' Zoe...

The 97th Academy Awards have wrapped and the entire 2025 Oscars winners list has been unveiled. We live updated the winners list throughout the entire night as the statuettes were handed out at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
“Anora” won five of the six Oscars for which it was nominated: Best Picture, Best Director Sean Baker, Best Original Screenplay (also for Baker), Best Editor (Baker again), and Best Actress for Mikey Madison. the only category it lost was Yura Borisov’s nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
Anne Thompson’s final predictions were mostly right! It was undeniable that the Oscar race changed dramatically since the nominations were announced on January 23, and “Emilia Pérez” received 13 nods, the most ever for a non-English-language movie. The Jacques Audiard film ended up winning just two awards.

The 97th Academy Awards ceremony has just finished up, and we have a full list of winners in all the major categories below.
The Oscars very rarely recognize superhero/comic book movies, but 2024 was a particularly bad year for the genre, so it was hardly surprising when even what would be widely regarded as the best of the bunch, Deadpool and Wolverine, didn't receive any nominations - though some feel the block-busting Marvel Studios team-up should have picked up a few in the technical categories.
Several movies we have covered were nominated in major categories, however, including Dune: Part Two, The Substance, and Wicked (all for Best Picture). In the end, though, it was Anora that wound up taking home surprise wins for Best Picture, Director (Sean Baker) and Best Actress (Mikey Madison).

As Adrien Brody noted during his best actor acceptance speech, the 2025 Oscars were not his “first rodeo.”
Amid emotional remarks, in which among other things he thanked partner Georgina Chapman, the orchestra began playing wrap-up music, which Brody quickly dismissed.
“I’m wrapping up. Please. Please. I will wrap up. Please turn the music off. I’ve done this before. It’s not my first rodeo. I will be brief,” the now two-time Oscar winner said to laughs.
The win comes two decades after a 29-year-old Brody won for the Holocaust drama The Pianist in 2003, making him the youngest best actor Oscar winner of all time. At that show, he famously kissed presenter Halle Berry, and on this year’s red carpet, Berry kissed him in a throwback to that moment.
In his acceptance speech, Brody acknowledged that a career has its ebbs and flows.

After months of hype, campaigning, predictions, pivots, and controversies large and small, the 2025 Oscars finally arrived to provide clarity in what seemed to be the most wide-open awards season in years.
But in the end it was all Anora. Sean Baker's film, about a Brooklyn sex worker who falls for the slacker son of a Russian oligarch, won five Oscars, including Best Picture, Mikey Madison for Best Actress (over presumptive favorite The Substance's Demi Moore), Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing. Baker accounted for four of those wins — picture, director, original screenplay, and editing — making history in the process.
Two-time Holocaust survivor Adrien Brody became a two-time Oscar winner, taking Best Actor for his turn as a Hungarian immigrant in The Brutalist. Brody used his acceptance speech to speak out against the charged political climate and attacks on underrepresented communities: "Let's fight for what's right... let's keep loving one another.

Adrien Brody has won the Best Actor Oscar for his turn in A24’s The Brutalist, clinching the statuette two decades after his first win for Roman Polanski’s The Pianist.

Adrien Brody has won his second Oscar for best actor, for his role in Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist.”

Twenty-two years after his first big Oscar win, “The Brutalist” star Adrien Brody picked up his second Academy Award for Best Actor on Sunday night for his work in Brady Corbet’s epic. Brody was long considered by many to be the favorite in the category, which included fellow nominees Timothée Chalamet (“A Complete Unknown”), Sebastian Stan (“The Apprentice”), Ralph Fiennes (“Conclave”), and Colman Domingo (“Sing Sing”).
Corbet was one of the first people to run up to congratulate his clearly thrilled and deeply moved star, who thanked him and partner and co-screenwriter in his speech for giving this “triumph of a work” to the actor. “Thank you, God, for this blessed life,” the winner said when he took the stage, before thanking the community for “the tremendous of outpouring that I’ve felt from this world” in regards to his work on the film.

The race for Best Actor at this year’s 97th Academy Awards saw some of the greatest actors working today vying for the coveted golden statue. The likes of Adrien Brody for The Brutalist, Timothée Chalamet for his portrayal of music icon Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, Colman Domingo for the powerful prison drama Sing Sing, Ralph Fiennes for his role in the political thriller Conclave, and Sebastian Stan for his portrayal of Donald Trump in The Apprentice made up the list this year, and the winner has now been unveiled: Adrien Brody.
From director Brady Corbet, The Brutalist follows Adrien Brody as László Tóth, a Hungarian-Jewish Holocaust survivor who immigrates to the United States with dreams of becoming a well-renowned architect. Much like the style of architecture from which the movie bares its name, the story is brutal, with Brody, who holds the record of being the youngest...

You can't separate music from the movies, especially in an Oscar year like this one with two musicals nominated for Best Picture (Wicked and Emilia Pérez). As usual, the Motion Picture Academy incorporated music into Sunday's Oscars telecast, though not always in the usual way.
Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, both Oscar nominees for their roles, performed the opening number. Grande started things off, appropriately enough, with "Over the Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz. Erivo followed that with a rendition of "Home." Fans might have revolted had they not dueted during their time on stage together, so they closed the medley with "Defying Gravity"; Grande even stepped aside to let Erivo belt those final notes in the spotlight. They received a standing ovation.
Other artists included on Sunday night were K-pop star Lisa from Blackpink, Grammy winner Doja Cat, and Grammy nominee Raye, who contributed to a...

“We are so grateful,” said Camille, letting out a great “whoo hoo” as she and Clément Ducol accepted the Oscar for Best Original Song for El Mal in Emilia Pérez. “We wrote El Mal as a song to denounce corruption and we hope it speaks to the role that music and art can play and continue to play as a force of the good and progress in the world.”
The pair wrote the music and, in a rare occurrence, shared the lyric credit with Jacques Audiard, director of the much-nominated Netflix musical crime drama
Ducol and Camille are also up for Best Original Score for Emilia Pérez. Saldana, who performs with Karla Sofía Gascón, just won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
The film received 13 nominations, the most of any in the field. But it’s been dogged by controversy over resurfaced racist tweets by trans star Gascón. She plays...

The Oscar for best original song was handed out at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday night by none other than Mick Jagger, who announced the winner: ”El Mal” from Emilia Pérez.
“The producers wanted Bob Dylan to do it, but Bob didn’t want to,” joked Jagger. “‘The best songs this year are obviously in A Complete Unknown. You should find somebody younger.’ Ok, I’m younger than Bob! So here I am.”
It turns out Dylan was really invited to present and perform at the Oscars, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.
Earlier in the evening, Oscars host Conan O’Brien also suggested that Dylan, the subject of the Oscar-nominated A Complete Unknown, had passed on attending the ceremony.
“Dylan wanted to be here tonight, but not that badly,” O’Brien joked in his monologue.

Diane Warren’s streak of Oscar losses continues, as the songwriter — on her 16th Best Original Song nomination — once again lost in the category for The Six Triple Eight’s “The Journey.”
Despite the 16 nominations — and eight consecutive Best Original Song nominations, dating back to 2017’s “Stand Up for Something” from Marshall — the 97th Academy Awards presented Warren with perhaps her best opportunity to win the category in years: “The Journey” was performed by an Oscar-winning artist, H.E.R., was in a widely seen movie, and was in a field where...
