Black Bear’s management arm has signed “Flightplan” and “Red” director Robert Schwentke for representation. In a decades-long career, Schwentke has moved between indie productions, franchise fare and action and adventure films.

His war drama, “The Captain,” premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival to critical acclaim, going on to win multiple awards, including the Fipresci Prize at the Vilnius International Film Festival. It was nominated for five categories at the 2018 German Film Awards.

Mikey Madison and Zoe Saldaña, the respective Oscar winners for Anora (Best Actress) and Emilia Pérez (Best Supporting Actress), will be seeking Emmy nominations this year for vastly different TV projects. Madison will submit for the 50-year-old sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live and the limited series Lady in the Lake, while Saldaña will be eligible for Season 2 of the spy thriller Lioness.

Speaking of SNL, Timothée Chalamet and Ariana Grande are two other recent Oscar nominees who also hosted the program this season. Chalamet earned an Oscar nod for his portrayal of music superstar Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, and Grande made magic happen in Wicked as Glinda the Good Witch.

The San Quentin Film Festival, which in October became the world’s first-ever film festival inside of a prison, is returning for a second year.

The festival was founded by Rahsaan “New York” Thomas, a filmmaker who was previously incarcerated at the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, and San Quentin volunteer Cori Thomas (no relation).

“For 2025, the goal is to expand the impact by being more inclusive,” Rahsaan said in a statement. “That starts with finding ways for people incarcerated beyond the walls of San Quentin to participate too.”

The Four Seasons trailer reveals Tina Fey and Steve Carell reuniting in Netflix's series remake of Alan Alda's comedy classic. Based on the 1981 film of the same name written, directed by, and starring Alda, the upcoming Netflix miniseries was created and written by 30 Rock alum Tina Fey, Lang Fisher, and Tracey Wigfield. Fey also stars in the series alongside Steve Carell, reuniting onscreen after 2010's Date Night. The cast also includes Colman Domingo, Erika Henningsen, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Will Forte, and Marco Calvani.

Now, Netflix has unveiled the first official teaser trailer for The Four Seasons. The trailer presents a similar story as the 1981 film, following six lifelong friends over the course of four seasonal vacations in spring, summer, fall, and winter. Loosely inspired by Israileff’s experiences, Behind the Eight-Ball follows Trevor (Rosenmeyer) a high-functioning cocaine addict whose spiraling substance abuse threatens his career and closest relationships – forcing him to confront his demons and fight for redemption as his life unravels around him.

Says the filmmaker, “The film is a ‘love letter’ to functional addicts who are afraid to speak up or admit embarrassment for their ongoing issues, letting them know they are not alone and the depression they feel is felt by many.”

Israileff and Rosenmeyer are producing through their companies Artisanal Interrobang and Florida Hill respectively alongside producer Katelyn Henslin.

Not every film with good reviews becomes a major commercial hit, and not all films with bad reviews are unpopular. Just like last year there have been a series of examples, including Furiosa: A Mad Max Story, The Fall Guy, and Red One.

Now, Netflix's latest film The Electric State is experiencing a similar trend. Although the film didn't receive a theatrical release and it headed straight to Netflix, the early reviews ahead of the Mar. 14 release called it "one of the worst movies of the year." The official numbers prove otherwise, as Tudumcrowns The Electric State the biggest film of the week.

For the week between Mar. 10 and 16,The Electric State amassed 25.2 million views and 53.8 million hours viewed. That is a huge feat considering the movie had only 2 full days to achieve that before Netflix stopped counting.

It became the No. 1 movie in 47 countries, including the U.S.

A Complete Unknown is heading to streaming. Timothée Chalamet fans will soon be able to stream his Oscar-nominated performance as Bob Dylan on Hulu.

Per Deadline, the Searchlight biopic arrives on the streamer on March 27 after a 92-day theatrical window. Directed by James Mangold, A Complete Unknown is based on the 2015 biography for Bob Dylan, Elijah Wald's Dylan Goes Electric!. The movie focuses mostly on Dylan's rise in folk music by utilizing electric instruments, with the title coming from the lyrics of "Like a Rolling Stone," one of the singer's most popular songs. The movie is widely considered to be among the best film releases of 2024, and it earned over $109 million at the box office.

Netflix's latest release, The Electric State, has all the qualities of a major blockbuster. It comes from a big studio, it has a stellar cast and critically acclaimed directors, and, despite the studio's reluctance for theatrical releases, it has a major budget.

However, The Electric State debuted with one of the worst ratings of the year. The sci-fi film debuted with an abysmal score of 10% on Rotten Tomatoes, a number that slightly increased to 14%, still a major disappointment. Following its official release on the platform, the audience score couldn't be more different, as it's over five times better than the critics' score.

Only films based on pre-existing pieces of intellectual property typically get that kind of financial support in Hollywood these days. Is “The Electric State” based on a book, though? Here is what you should know about the new, expensive Netflix film’s origins.

Is “The Electric State” based on a book?

Yes! “The Electric State” is not, however, based on a traditional book. It is, instead, loosely based on a 2018 illustrated novel by acclaimed Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag.

A24 has a long list of movies lined up for 2025, starting with Opus, which will hit theaters on March 14. With its immense popularity in the indie movie scene, more mainstream artists are eager to collaborate with A24. It was primarily a film distribution company but later ventured into production with the Oscar-winning film Moonlight.

Adrien Brody joined the coveted club of two-time Oscar winners last night after picking up the Best Actor award for his role in Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist.

With his lengthy acceptance speech, the New York-born actor also joined the much more obscure contingent of Academy Award winners to clock extended minutes at the Academy podium as they accepted their awards.

Brody spoke for 5 minutes and 40 seconds at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday. The Guinness World Records (Gwr) currently cites Greer Garson’s 1943 Best Actress acceptance speech as the longest in Academy history at 5 minutes and 30 seconds. This would mean Brody’s is now the longest, but there’s some debate about the Gwr figure. Some historians have clocked the full length of Garson’s speech around the seven-minute mark; however, only partial audio recordings of the speech remain. The Academy has a 3-minute 56-second transcript of the speech on its online archive.

Adrien Brody secured his second Academy Award for Best Actor on Sunday for his performance in The Brutalist, playing Hungarian architect László Tóth, a Holocaust survivor seeking a new life in America. Directed by Brady Corbet, the film was nominated in ten categories, including Best Picture.

SAG Awards wins by Conclave (best cast), Demi Moore (best actress) and Timothée Chalamet (best actor) led to speculation that Conclave, Moore and Chalamet could win big at the Academy Awards.

But it turns out the Oscars were on board with Anora, Madison and Brody. Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner was named best picture; Madison, in a surprise, nabbed best actress over veteran Demi Moore (who numerous pundits predicted would win with her first Oscar nomination after a long career and wins at the SAG Awards, Critics Choice and Golden Globes); and Brody defeated Chalamet.

Additionally, all three films — Conclave, The Substance and A Complete Unknown — seemingly underperformed Sunday night.

Oscars 2025: The 97th Academy Award finally took place and was filled with magical moments and loads of emotions. However, it was a sad night for Demi Moore fans, as she did not win the Best Actress trophy despite bagging all the major awards; the Academy Award evaded her. Zoe Saldana got emotional with her win, and rightfully so, as it is the Oscars. Read on for the deets.

The award was hosted by celebrity host and comedian Conan O’Brien, who kept things bold. This year’s nominations were filled with diverse genres and people. Emilia Perez, starring Selena Gomez and Zoe, led with thirteen nominations. Ariana Grande’s blockbuster movie Wicked and Adrien’s The Brutalist followed with the second-highest nominations.

The 2025 Oscars turned out to be a golden night for Anora. The critically acclaimed indie took home five Oscars including Best Director, Best Editing, Best Original Screenplay (all Sean Baker), Best Actress (Mikey Madison), and Best Picture. Anora won in every category it was nominated in except Best Supporting Actor (Yura Borisov) which went to Kieran Culkin as expected.

Emilia Pérez went into Hollywood’s Big Night with 13 nominations, winning in just two: Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldana) and Best Original Song. The Brutalist was recognized with three Oscars after earning 10 nominations. Wicked also earned 10 nominations and finished the night with two wins. And Dune: Part Two won the Achievement in Sound and Visual Effects Oscars out of its five nominations.

After a chaotic and, at times unpredictable awards season, it all came down to this –– the big show. Hosted by Conan O'Brien, the 97th Academy Awards happened Sunday evening in Los Angeles, and Anora emerged as Best Picture.

With a surprising sweep of several major categories –– also including Best Director, Original Screenplay and Editing for filmmaker Sean Baker (who becomes the first person to win four Oscars in one night) and a somewhat surprising win for star Mikey Madison over Demi Moore –– Anora became the little indie that could.

The 97th Academy Awards have wrapped and the entire 2025 Oscars winners list has been unveiled. We live updated the winners list throughout the entire night as the statuettes were handed out at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

As Adrien Brody noted during his best actor acceptance speech, the 2025 Oscars were not his “first rodeo.”

Amid emotional remarks, in which among other things he thanked partner Georgina Chapman, the orchestra began playing wrap-up music, which Brody quickly dismissed.

“I’m wrapping up. Please. Please. I will wrap up. Please turn the music off. I’ve done this before. It’s not my first rodeo. I will be brief,” the now two-time Oscar winner said to laughs.

The win comes two decades after a 29-year-old Brody won for the Holocaust drama The Pianist in 2003, making him the youngest best actor Oscar winner of all time. At that show, he famously kissed presenter Halle Berry, and on this year’s red carpet, Berry kissed him in a throwback to that moment.

The Oscar season began and ended with Anora. Sean Baker's film moved to the front of the Oscar race after winning the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May, and while it didn't have the smoothest path, its Oscar journey ended with five trophies Sunday night, including Best Picture.

Anora also won Best Actress for Mikey Madison, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing — the last three of which went to Baker.

The race for Best Actor at this year’s 97th Academy Awards saw some of the greatest actors working today vying for the coveted golden statue. You can't separate music from the movies, especially in an Oscar year like this one with two musicals nominated for Best Picture (Wicked and Emilia Pérez). As usual, the Motion Picture Academy incorporated music into Sunday's Oscars telecast, though not always in the usual way.

Wicked stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, both Oscar nominees for their roles, performed the opening number. Grande started things off, appropriately enough, with "Over the Rainbow" from The Wizard of Oz. Erivo followed that with a rendition of "Home." Fans might have revolted had they not dueted during their time on stage together, so they closed the medley with "Defying Gravity"; Grande even stepped aside to let Erivo belt those final notes in the spotlight. They received a standing ovation.

The Oscar for best original song was handed out at the Dolby Theatre on Sunday night by none other than Mick Jagger, who announced the winner: ”El Mal” from Emilia Pérez.

“The producers wanted Bob Dylan to do it, but Bob didn’t want to,” joked Jagger. “‘The best songs this year are obviously in A Complete Unknown. You should find somebody younger.’ Ok, I’m younger than Bob! So here I am.”

It turns out Dylan was really invited to present and perform at the Oscars, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.
