Wildly Uneven, Lots of Good and Bad

The good- pretty cool lore and set up for the unicorns. Promising father-daughter set up, some good satire of the rich and powerful. Will Poulter is the best of the cast.

The bad- The father's character development felt very unearned, most of the movie I was praying for his bloody comeuppance. The rich family was too one-note for the amount of screen time they get. CGI was noticeably mediocre but understandable for a low budget movie.

With a rewrite or two, and some more money for CGI and action sequences, this could have been a sleeper surprise with genuine sequel potential as I really did like what they did with the unicorns. But because most all the characters were one-dimensional, the movie drags in the middle third as you wait for the inevitable. When it does finally happen, it's somewhat entertaining but let down by its poor CGI, so-so action sequences, and clunky plot resolution. The first two are forgivable given its budget, the third is not.

I don't regret watching this movie, I just wish that it had lived up to its potential.

I'm sure it'll work for a good many, but I can't say it did so for me.

'Death of a Unicorn' is potential-laden, though unfortunately I just never really got my teeth into this one. The whole set-up is severely underwhelming, the whole plot with the rich family just didn't do it for me. It does pick up at the conclusion, which is where I see the potential.

A movie solely about the Kintners and the unicorns could've been ace, especially if it lent into the fantasy side of it; almost if it was (iffy association incoming) 'How to Train Your Dragon'-esque, just with all the gore and death that this 2025 releaes does hold. The final scene, as oddly over the top as it is, shows the promise.

Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega are decent in their respective roles, not that I have any core moments to take from either of them here though. The Leopolds, as much as I wish they weren't in the film, are portrayed well enough by those on the screen, Will Poulter is minorly amusing to be fair.

I'm sure it'll work for a good many, but I can't say it did so for me.

Good entertainment

If this movie took itself seriously, I'd give it a low score. But it's so obviously dumb fun mixed with satire, I feel like a low score would miss the point.

If you like dark humor, jump scares, and a bit of gore, I'd recommend it to you. The characters are more caricatures. The satire is not subtle. The humor is low brow. And I say all of this as QUALITIES of the movie.

The level of writing is very much like that of 80s or 90s era sitcoms. The performances are fine - adequate. I left the theater understanding that I saw a "bad" movie by most standards. But I didn't regret spending money on the ticket. To me, it's one of those "so bad, it's good" kind of movies.

If I have the opportunity to see it again, maybe on a streaming service, I will.

Goofy and average

This is movie that without any high expectations delivers. The actors are familiar, fun to watch, and each has their fun moments. Jenna Ortega does well carrying the center and works well with Rudd, who plays himself basically. Carrigan is totally underutilized, his facial expressions from his character are pretty much many of the best parts, Pouter does well also. That being said, there was only so much to do with the outline. It had to go harder in either direction honestly to level up. I would have liked it to up the crazy and absurdity all around, it's a movie about unicorns in modern life so why hold back, ratchet it up.

Highly entertaining

I love horror comedies and am ecstatic with the surge of movies we've seen in this subgenre. But most are lacking on the horror side. They're more fun than scary. Death of a Unicorn does the horror side well. There are a few moments that gave me OG Jurassic Park vibes with the tension/suspense.

The comedy side is strong but inconsistent. Some attempts I found hilarious while others fall flat, but not to the point of cringe. I enjoyed the entire cast as well as the visually unique characters.

I do want to point out a couple standouts. One is, to no one's surprise, Jenna Ortega. She has become a full-blown star and has taken the mantle of horror queen like none other. And Will Poulter, once known as the weird eyebrows dude from We're the Millers, continues to impress with vastly differing characters.

I had a fun time with this movie and think most fans of the subgenre will as well.

Could have been better, but do fear unicorns

I came to this movie without having watched a trailer. The movie does take a bit of time to set the pieces up for the déroulement of the main story. The issue is that the movie has a few continuity problems, which is due to the fact that the movie has essentially three locations, not counting the airplane in the intro: the woods (and it's surrounding), outside the mansion, inside the mansion. This means that during the rampage, there are times where the unicorn must have taken a coffee break or something because its night time in one scene and the the very next one its midmorning.

I did enjoy Anthony Carrigan's performance as well as Jenna Ortega's.

I won't be too harsh on this movie since it doesn't take itself seriously and all the actors know that but they express their flaws quite brilliantly.

What the why is that?

The film is full of whys. Why does comedy exist in an atmosphere that could have been both mysterious and scary, but has turned into a ridiculous satire? Why does the story focus more on the characters' stupidity than on the development of the story and the origin of the unicorn legend?

If a horror film that is rated R, which is not meant for children, tries to make comedy by showing the clumsiness of the characters, it is actually committing suicide, as far as I can tell.

And many other whys, the most important of which is the poor CGI and the unoriginal design of the unicorn itself. Why does the male unicorn look like a dragon from "Game of Thrones" in profile and a donkey from "Shrek" from the front?!

Insufferable characters

This movie could work with the strange premise and shoddy CGI. But, it requires characters to be likeable or at least relatable. That's the big issue here. It plays hard into the fame of Jenna Ortega. She's supposed to be the maiden with a pure heart. But, she comes off mores like an angst teenager with a terrible haircut. Paul Rudd is decent enough, but you find yourself getting annoyed with him immediately.

The Rich Family: take your typical evil greedy rich family and that's all you get here. They're ready to make a buck. That's their entire drive. There were hints of depth that were destroyed by misplaced comedy. When the father is standing, the son's immediately reaction was great. Then they went hokey.

In the end, this is a forgettable movie. The premise should carry it better, but the characters ruin it. The CGI is bad. But, you can let it pass if the characters are relatable. This movie fails here.

I appreciate the originality, despite some predictability

6.5/10 STARS - It might not be for everyone and has a definite tone shift about halfway through, turning from black comedy to more full-on horror with some humor here and there. The kills are explicit and gnarly. Not a complaint, just an observation. I appreciate the originality of the story, given all of the subpar remakes/reboots/sequels we've been subjected to over the years, despite the stereotypes and typical situations that are shown. The acting in here was good, and I appreciated Ortega's performance (as I usually do). There were parts that started to feel a bit repetitive, and it felt just a tad on the "too long" side. Also was a bit predictable with some events and jump scares. The CGI of the unicorns was lacking in some ways as well. Given that this is a movie about unicorns, you'd think they would have upped the game on the visual effects for it. Video review available on my YouTube channel.

Awful dross

A great cast totally wasted. Think they were aiming for black comedy horror. This film was not funny at all and not scary either, so it failed on both points. All of the characters apart from Jenna Ortega are nasty soulless personalities, even Paul Rudd. Whilst this presumably was the intention, it did mean that you are watching for the most part characters that you really dislike. Jenna was wasted as her character was not given enough screen time, so you don't really find yourself caring about her either. The CGI was extremely average. The cast do their best with an incredibly flat and irredeemable script. I really struggle to see how anyone involved thought this was a good film. The theatre I went to was nearly full and I did not hear one laugh or scream. An incredibly boring film that I could have walked out of with five minutes left and not been bothered about seeing the end. The end was predictable. Complete garbage.

Entertaining enough to keep your attention but won't make anyone's best horror list for 2025

I watched an advanced screening of Death of a Unicorn (2025) this evening in theaters. The storyline follows a lawyer and his daughter on their way to his boss's mansion, where he hopes to secure a major promotion. However, when they accidentally hit and kill a unicorn on the drive there, what was supposed to be a routine business trip takes a bizarre and deadly turn.

Written and directed by Alex Scharfman in his feature debut, the film stars Jenna Ortega (Wednesday), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Anthony Carrigan (Gotham), Téa Leoni (Jurassic Park III), Will Poulter (The Maze Runner), and Richard E. Grant (Gosford Park).

This is the definition of Hollywood horror-slick, well-produced, and predictable. The writing has some unique elements but also reminded me of Resident Evil in terms of its sci-fi horror aspects. The CGI is top-notch, and the gore is well-executed, though at times it's a bit overdone. The horror elements are solid, with some entertaining kills and at least one effective jump scare. The cast is excellent across the board, but Anthony Carrigan, as Griff, steals the show. I wasn't a big fan of the ending, but it fits the Hollywood horror formula.

In conclusion, Death of a Unicorn is entertaining enough to keep your attention but won't make anyone's best horror list for 2025. I'd score it a 6/10 and recommend seeing it once.

Mid in every way

Death of A Unicorn is theoretically a horror-comedy underpinned by thematic denunciations of greed and environmental exploitation. The horror is essentially non-existent, the comedy is trite and predictable, and the thematic moralizing is as deep as a puddle. This isn't overtly bad or insulting; but it is stale and flaccid. The movie's one saving grace, such as it is, is a likeable cast that includes Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, Will Poulter and Tea Leoni. They all seem to be trying hard to make something out of a script that didn't merit their talents, and their charisma makes you want to like the movie more than it deserves.

[6.2] Great White Unicorn

That could have been exploited more magically with awesome fantasy features. Instead it shows very good visual effects except the baby unicorn, mumbo jumbo human greed and getting high on unicorn calcific powder and rejuvenating extracts to narcissistic own use.

Jenna Ortega is averagely hard enough to watch with near zero youthful charisma, but when you have her as one of the executive producers the result is not bright.

The effects were good, the whole movie and cast weren't.

Cocaine Bear Vibes, But Not Bad

I got to see an early screening and it was as expected, campy, gory with comedic elements. It was a good popcorn movie. Some people complained that it was stupid which I don't get because its a movie about unicorns... So of course its a bit dumb, that's the point.

I compare it to Cocaine Bear (2023) because they are both marketed to be a silly comedy with violence, but this was way better than Cocaine Bear. It's aiming to be a cult classic film but missed the mark a bit. Also, not that funny which was disappointing but it had some jump scares and gruesome deaths so I was still engaged the whole time.

Not funny, not horror, overall disappointing

Unfortunately this film misses on both accounts, not funny enough for a comedy and not scary enough for a monster horror. The two jump scares are predictable and the gore, gratuitous and a bit pointless. Best scenes are the mountain landscapes and the aurora night sky. Ridley doesn't even belong in the film, her story is on a different narrative altogether and she is incongruous with the rest of the action. Unfortunately, this time the cast could not save what is, in my view, a poor attempt of satire on greed and pointless animal cruelty. How science fits into this amalgam of bad film- making is beyond understanding, but again, poorly executed.

Nope

I was really excited for this movie because of the actors, but oh my god... this movie was horrible. There was no story in it and everybody in the cinema was laughing because the movie was so bad... seriously: if you want to watch a movie and get bored, watch this one. Otherwise DON'T!!! There really was no story and I wish that it was as good as they told on the Dutch tv. Idk why it was in the news, but I do know that it wasn't because it was a good movie. Too bad for the actors, because they were very famous and in the other movies they acted in, they were much better. I wouldn't watch it again.

Pleasantly surprised!

I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I never imagined a major studio would make a horror that included unicorns as the horror element. It was refreshing to see them use that huge horn to impale people.

The movie also wanted to remind us that spending time with your family is more important then spending time at the office so you can buy them lots of stuff.

The cast was excellent and everyone played their parts wonderfully.

I think this is a very likable movie. If you like horror and comedy in a soulful movie, then you will enjoy this movie.

I have to give a shout out to the supporting cast Anthony Carrigan and Jessica Hynes.

Instant cult classic.

I think this movie did exactly what it was trying to do. I loved the absurdity, the campy effects, heavy gore alongside light comedy, the art history, and even the shoehorned spiritually enlightened monologue at the climax. I think they set out to make a movie that got 5 stars on IMBD, that everyone would go see out of curiosity, that half of viewers would hate and the other half would be giddy about. Instant cult classic.

Ortega shines amid dull special effects.

A good R-rated YA novel with laughs and themes of human weakness. Presentation of the Unicorns needed better animation or more practical substitutes and finesse. Less could've been more since many of the deaths ended up being boring and predictable.

However, I do recommend you see it on the big screen. Sound design, set design and some of these big performances still deserve it. The hot-tub nepo-baby was funny(Poulter) And a certain heroic butler roll was made larger by its actor (Carrigan).

This may not apply to you, but I also found the very end confusing. Seems like someone wrote a cover-up for the first ending they didn't like.
