A well detailed work of art

Anyone would agree that its just a standard legal drama. The casting and the setting doesnt seem very expensive or captivating. But the brilliant direction is evident in every detail. Main characters have been casted very well in every way possible. Jeethu joseph does not need any special introduction in such a genre since he has proved his excellence in many of his previous movies. As an average mohanlal enthusiast and a consistent critique of his work, I feel that this must go down as one of his best modern work. He has input an element of his own as well as adhered to the character presented by the director. Movie portrays characteristics of resilience and persistence. A must watch.

Relevant and engaging

Even with a predictable storyline Jeethu Joseph's mastery of scriptwriting with Shanthi Mayadevi's knowledge as an advocate makes this engaging and effective. Jeethu Joseph has always been a better writer than a director and there are a lot of instances in the movie that clearly shows that aspect. Some of the smaller characters' acting was not very good, the music was overused a lot and there were a few things that could've been trimmed out. But when it works, the film works great. Even though, it's not something very novel, Mohanlal saying some dialogues did make me clap hard, knowing that I'm sitting in a packed theatre with a lot of families. Anaswara and Siddique were brilliant in their roles and Mohanlal has done a role that is subtle, vulnerable and serious in a very effective way after a long time. Despite the film using easy ways to tell a lot of things, despite the plot being nothing new, it being not new makes more of a case of how it is still so important in every aspect, due to which I was very satisfied by the end of the movie.

Mohanlal-Jeethu Joseph Combo Never Fails To Strike

Neru, an emotional court room drama is an absolute masterpiece directed and written by Jeethu Joseph elevated with Mohanlals And Siddiques amazing acting. The story follows the path of Sara a blind girl who is the victim of rape who's role is magnificently done by Anaswara Rajan. She seeks the help Of Vijayamohan, an underconfident lawyer who hasnt been practiced in a long time, this role is fantastically done by Mohanlal. As a malayali seeing Lalettan back at his subtle acting is just mesmerizing. This is proof that directors play an important role when it comes to shaping an actor. Vijayamohan Is Opposed By Rajashekar, a renowned lawyer who has been the enemy of Vijayamohan. This role is brilliantly played by Siddique. Rest of the movie you have to see othwrwise it would be a spoiler. I wouldn't say this is a theatre experiece movie but the film crew managea to hook our eyes to the screen with taking it off. I never felt bored even for a second thats how captivating the entire movie is. Although taking in Jeethu Josephs other works like Drishyam thos movie didnt quite reaxh to its level, it did deliver some goosebumps but i felt that the story was written in favour of Vijayamohan. So, its an average movie elevated with Mohanlals Comeback to Real cinema.

Brillian court room drama that hooks you in throughout

The same team had done Drishyam 10 years ago, which has become a milestone movie, not just in Malayalam but across Indian movie industry. Any movie they do now will be compared to that movie.

There are some common elements, but Neru is a totally different movie, both the theme and the mood of the movie. This is emotionally more draining than Drishyam, while it does not have the sheer audacity and shock value that Drishyam had

The best part of the movie is the script. After 10 minutes or so, the movie just hooks you in, and you can't look away even for a minute, till the very last scene in the climax, which will most probably leave you teary eyed.

Performances are top notch. Special mentions to Sidhique and Jagadish. Two actors who were doing Tier 2 comedy movies 30 years ago, but their acting careers are on a totally high trajectory.

But this movie is carried by Mohanlal and then Anaswara Rajan. Yes, Mohanlal is one of the greatest actors in India and his performance is expected, but Anaswara matches him best for best. Their scene together in the first half and then in the climax will leave you spell bound

On the flip side, don't expect any out of the world movie making techniques. Technically the movie is just passable, but that is a typical Jeethu Joseph style. He let the script and performances take centre stage. The Cameraman, editor and music director just do their job in the back ground

Last but not the least, spare a thought for the genius of Jeethu. Making one edge of the seat thriller like Drishyam is impossible for 9/10 writer directors. But he has now done 4 movies at that level (Drishyam 1 & 2, Memorie and Neru). Hats off man, and hope you outdo yourself in your next one.

Drishyam Team Striked Again for Blockbuster

*** Neru Malayalam Movie Review ***

Directed by Jeethu Joseph starring Mohanlal in the lead..

Also starring Siddique , Anaswara Rajan , Jagadeesh.

*** Drishyam combo struck for a six.***

Although it's mentioned that the movie is a courtroom drama, when it's directed by Jeetu Joseph we could expect the suspense and here too he kept that thrilling mood on.

The courtroom sequences which was nearly 80 percent of the movie was well captured. The moment of what's next in a courtroom will happen is well established and that what makes Jeetu Joseph a brilliant craftsman.

Performance wise Anaswara Rajan had given her career best performance.

Siddique's performance was like at one moment a feel of hatred was developed as the life which he gave to the character was phenomenal.

Last but not the least the Complete Actor Mohanlal, needless to say, this man effortlessly performs and wins the heart of the audience. How his potential can be used effectively, when that realisation happens we would have en number of classics from this legend and Jeetu Joseph knows to exploit him well

A little mass moment from this courtroom drama thereby not spoiling it's core was clap worthy..

The topic is social relevant and it's execution was clap worthy

Overall Neru ends the Mollywood industry 2023 at a good note & giving a hope that Mollywood 2024 will be full of blockbusters.

Watchable !!

If it were 20 years ago I would have been overly impressed like the rest of the audiences. But now you could see a mile ahead how the plot is deliberately being sabotaged to create thrilling moments. This is evident when the blind victim is asked to prove her ability to sculpt a bust through her sense of touch. Even if this is true, the subject cannot be permitted to be someone who is directly involved in the case like the lawyer as he can purposely influence the outcome to discredit the victim. This was an manufactured scene to prove it to be a David and Goliath case. There are many such instances throughout the movie. But besides this obvious tweaking of the plot the movie is definitely watchable as somewhere in this movie there is a sad commentory on the Indian judicial system where victims of such heinous crime do not get justice, just the shame. So this movies can be added to the likes of the movie "Pink" which deals in the same subject.

captivating cinema

Jeethu Joseph done it again ; he is remarkable in his making and writing; he know how to hold the attention of audience and to give them a emotional impact to experience ;neru add to his best movies and set the benchmark in this court room genre !!

Editing is very good and well supported by technical aspects!

Performance vice everyone did their role pretty good, anaswararajan is Mighty impressive in this one,her best role till date to me; outstanding !

And my dearest lalettan like every one he has some setbacks, but he is never out of touch ,this one is just to remember that; his performance is eye catchy one to me, his role is not at all challenging one but the way he is step into his character and the way he delivered the dialogues are exceptional and treat to watch for me !

And this is just the beginning......!!!!

Decent court room drama

This is a decent attempt from Jeethu Joseph. Nothing like Drishyam or even Kooman, but engaging and watchable. The thread is good, but the climax was predictable and also very melodramatic. Also, the casting in the movie was off in multiple places. The primary example is Shanti Mayadevi. She simply cannot act and is awkward in a majority of the scenes. I totally understand, that's not her forte, but why give her such a meaty role? The victims mother also couldn't handle the emotional scenes. Also, Jeethu succumbs to the usual tropes of overdoing some scenes - like the incompetence of the first lawyer. The movie is also unnecessarily long and spends insane amounts of time on a CCTV visual. I'm summary, it's a good attempt and an engaging court drama, but not as stellar as it's touted to be.

Must watch

What a movie.and the performance was too good, except shanti, shanti was so bad and annoying that is the only negative, the depth of the script was unreal, anshwara rajan acted so good, her career best so far, mohanlal, siddique, jagadish, ganesh everyone did there job well. This was a comeback movie for mohanlal after so many flop movies but he proved in this movie, jeethu always comes with a top movie, sometime a got some goosebumps, and ending was so perfect, you will clap hands for sure.neru won hearts, this is must watch movie. Worth watching, i feel some lag in first 10 minutes but then the movie will goes to another level.

For me it's a repeated story except climax and climax is predictable.

Since I saw lot of movies about court & lawyers, so I found this movie as boring. Initially I thought, twist and convict are different but unfortunately the same convict is criminal till the end. Catching criminal using Cc tv cameras is boring. Since i watched movies like drusham and sri mahalaxmi (telugu movies), some scenes seems to be repeated for me. For example, in sri mahalakshmi movie, the prosecuter disproved the witness photos using the mirror. The same thing repeated here.final twist is predictable. So this movie is interesting for people who doesn't watch above movies. This movie should come in 2005 year.

Jeetu Joseph - Mohan Lal deliver yet again

I went to this movie expecting a drishyam like thriller and it happened to be the same. All those flashbacks , evidences etc kind of things that make a Jeetu Joseph movie can be seen in the movie . A court room drama that keeps you at the edge of the seat . There is no suspense or anything but it is a thriller . All the cast did a great job . In fact Siddique as Lawyer makes you hate him in the movie and question the profession or our judiciary. I think this movie might be a career changer for Anaswara Rajan as her acting was too good. There are many court room classics in Malayalam cinema and this one can be compared to those. I will give 8 out of 10 for this Jeetu Joseph thriller.

Mediocre and Overrated

No story, no suspense, just plain.

Expected a stronger and more engaging plot from Jeetu Joseph. Disappointed.

The crime was done and culprit was found in the first ten minutes. Then the seen too many times case where the hero first does not show interest and everyone else requests him to take the case. Hero accepts and then a very ordinary court proceedings follow. No real challenges faced by the hero. Overhyped obstacles. Villain is rich and has employed a Supreme Court advocate. No display of high intelligence from hero. No mass dialogues nor anything engaging.

A mediocre movie made on an interesting topic!

A must watch courtroom drama

Much is expected when Jeethu Joseph collaborates with Mohanhal. Why shouldn't we? Together they have given us the Drishyam saga. Expectations met as this courtroom drama falls in the similar category.

Mohanlal portraying a long forgotten Lawyer Vijaymohan takes a strange case involving harassment of a blind girl named Sara by the notorious son of an influential personality. He's up against a top notch defense advocate Rajasekharan and his daughter Poornima (Priyamani).

Prosecution has nothing against the defendant except for a sculpture of the culprit made by the victim herself. It's this theme that separates this drama from the rest. The persistence of the victim to seek justice shown in this film is really an emotional roller-coaster.

Needless to say that Mohanlal is the center of this film and delivers a great performance with very well written dialogues.

A not to be missed film.

Mohanlal-Jeethu Joseph combo shine once again! [+64%]

Neru does exhibit the hangover of other courtroom dramas such as Pink and Oru Abhibhashakante Case Diary, alongside writer-director Jeethu Joseph's own family-thriller Drishyam. The writer in Jeethu has always impressed me more than the director, as his writing always offers scope for his actors to shine. That's the case here as well, with some excellent performances from the likes of Anaswara Rajan, Siddique, and (..hold on.. it's been a while..) LALETTAN! Anaswara, who plays the role of a rape victim who's blind, gets the meatiest part and absolutely nails it. Also, having Santhi Mayadevi assisting Jeethu in the screenplay this time around helps look at things from a balanced perspective (as opposed to the clichéd male savior trope), although her featuring in a prominent supporting role feels like an uninspired choice. Vishnu Shyam composes an affecting theme song, which is used throughout the film.

Once again, we're subjected to the "first drama, then thriller" treatment that Jeethu Joseph has worked in his favor in the Drishyam films (including a few notable callbacks). The developments feel slow in the initial half and Mohanlal's entry as Adv. Vijaymohan takes its own sweet time to happen. He's initially presented as a prosecutor who has lost his professional touch, and this is justified in the first half when he's chewed up and spat out by the defense lawyer (a can-do-no-wrong Siddique). However, as audiences, when Vijaymohan slowly regains his lost aura and strikes back, it's almost like a meta-moment where Lalettan the actor is also hinting at getting back on track with his upcoming film choices. It is just WHOLESOME!

Jeethu Joseph makes his usual mistake of casting unconvincing actors in minor roles, to the point of occasionally making you think you're watching a soap opera. While it won't entirely tune you out of the proceedings, this is something the director can take better care of, as it's a recurring element. Also, I don't think audiences need to "revisit" a rape scene (like EVER!) to drive the point home. All this is still forgivable since we get an emotionally satisfying conclusion to the story, with some neat yet subtle statements being made in those closing shots.

P. S. Special shoutout this time goes to Mathew Varghese who played the Judge.

Filled by mind blowing performances

The best complete theatre experience I've got in a while. There are some movies where everything goes perfect, Neru is that kinda film. I wasn't really interested for this movie, my friends insisted me for it. Filled by superstar performances. There were many wow moments acting wise. Anaswara really blowed out my mind. That girl is something else. Her acting in climax scene was out of this world. And music is really impressive. I was asking for music directors name to my friend while watching. That Roohe song directly goes to our heart. I sat there for some more minutes even after the credit scenes.

A decent, watchable film that doesn't fully capitalize on its potential.

"Neru" (2023) is a watchable and decent courtroom drama, but it doesn't quite rise above its genre conventions. Mohanlal's performance is the film's biggest strength, bringing gravitas and subtlety to a role that demands both intelligence and emotional depth. The supporting cast, including Asha Sharath and Sreenivasan, provides solid performances that complement Mohanlal's lead role. However, the predictable plot, uneven pacing, and lack of deeper emotional exploration leave the movie feeling like a solid but unremarkable legal thriller.

For fans of Mohanlal and courtroom dramas, "Neru" offers a serviceable experience, but it doesn't stand out as a genre-defining film. It's a good option for those looking for a moderate legal drama with a strong central performance, but it may not be a memorable classic.

Must watch for Thriller movie lovers

Fresh story, Great Direction, Great Performances... Overall Totally Engaging movie..You won't feel bored anywhere...Must watch!!!

Note: Do not compare with Drishyam 1 and 2.. Those movies are masterpiece's in terms of film making and story telling. If you compare, you may feel dissatisfied regarding the overall high those movies gave you as compared to this movie 'Neru'. But surely you won't be disappointed. This movie is worth your time

Also we need to support film makers like Jeetu Joseph who is consistently making movies and keeping courtroom drama / mystery movie genre alive instead of following the popular wave...

Theatrical Comeback of Lalettan through a Solid Courtroom Drama

A decent courtroom drama that emotionally connects with the audience. The climax reveal was predictable from the start, so don't expect twists and mysteries, as that's not its intent. Apart from some mistakes by junior actors, the cast was good. Mohanlal and Siddique, in their main pillar roles, were brilliant. The courtroom exchanges between them were a treat to watch. The climax scene with Mohanlal is the Soul of the film, as expected from one of the best actors on the planet. But the one who stole the show was Anashwara by delivering her career-best performance.

The background score and music by Vishnu Shyam was refreshing, though there isn't much to note about the cinematography. Jeethu once again proves why he's a class apart in direction, especially in portraying a Post-Botox Mohanlal compared to some other directors. But he really needs to improve his filmmaking in terms of creativity. Overall, it's a solid film that manages to keep the attention of watchers to the end.

Just an Ordinary average movie

Just an Ordinary Average movie. I went to see it after seeing the rating. But the rating is for the subject it handles (Still there are lot of good movies with same subject). So, If you are really a movie lover it's not your cup of tea. Just one time watch on TV is enough

There is not much performance from anyone else other than Siddique and Anawara. Mohalal has no space to perform anything other than few dialogues during court trial.

It's getting the response just because of the emotional matters and that is not what we need as a movie. And the subject it handles is already discussed 100 times and it's just old wine in new bottle.

Rubbish, compared to Drishyam standards

At the interval stage now. .. (updated !)

The movie started reasonable, but soon it was evident that this was not going to be anything of the class the director delivered in Drishyam.

Then the trial started and the "classic masala" started pouring thru. With the defense lawyer doing a character assassination in court, something that has been disallowed for a long time now. Only to allow Mohanlal to deliver a punch dialogue shortly after.

Then the accused makes an another attempt at the victim, with goondas and all. Saw this is a masala movie, from the 90s??

Oh boy I am now trembling at what could exist going forward.

So far the homework by director and acting by "actors" are below par.

Post interval things, picked up a bit. From court room drama, it moves to crime investigation.

But there are bits of court room, so unlike what you see in Nna thaan case kodu or even Naradan.

The climax and situation leading to it was so predictable. I was wondering why this wasnt done even before, because it was a crucial question raised early on.

I changed my rating from 4/10 to 5, thanks to a few scenes in the 2nd half.

No nonsense movie

You might feel a bit exaggerated however this is a no- nonsense ,thrilling movie with a good message. The movie highlights how we portray cliche rape cases and how the victims are further victimized during the trial. There is a dialogue that rape victims are expected to portray fear and embarrassment alone which is true to the social norms of our country. This is a must watch, with such a great message. I do not know the law implications but how we view and treat a girl, especially if it is a vulnerable population is portrayed with justice. All the actors except 1-2 ( the parents of the accused, first public prosecutor etc) is a bit over artificial otherwise it's a brilliant cast as well.
