Directed by Henrik Martin Dahlsbakken, The Arctic Convoy tells the unfortunate tale of the PQ17 convoy that, in 1942, was headed to Murmansk and Arkhangelsk in the Soviet Union. The Arctic Convoy is an interesting watch, and the writers have written a tight screenplay that holds your attention and keeps you on the edge of your seat. “The Arctic Convoy” (2023), originally titled “Konvoi,” draws inspiration from the true events of World War II. Set in 1942, the story follows a convoy tasked with delivering supplies from Iceland to Murmansk, Russia. It appears to be loosely based on the incredible story of convoy PQ17, which endured devastating losses due to relentless attacks from German pilots and U-boats. The convoy faces a critical turning point when the British withdraw their protective freighters, leaving the ships vulnerable to German attacks. Despite this, the captain of one ship chooses to press on with the mission, defying the advice of most of his colleagues who urge a retreat to Iceland. Do they manage to deliver the supplies while fending off the German onslaught, or are they forced to abandon their mission? Let’s delve deeper into the plot to uncover the answers.

Netflix's La Palma includes a great cast of both seasoned and new actors. Directed by Kasper Barfoed, the non-English language Netflix original series follows a group of characters on the westernmost island in the Canary Islands called La Palma as they are faced with a dangerous ecological crisis. The series' combination of familial loyalty, great visual effects, and an engaging storyline has made it a hit on the streaming platform.
Although several movies and TV shows depict natural disasters, there is something unique about La Palma. The series is intriguing from its very first episode and gets better as more information is revealed. The Netflix miniseries’ cast members all give an outstanding performance and perfectly portray the fear that comes with knowing that the world might be coming to an end.

A lone Norwegian freighter braves Nazi U-boats and bombers in a desperate attempt to supply Russian soldiers during World War II. Inspired by real events, The Arctic Convoy shines a deserving spotlight on the heroic civilian sailors who risked death on treacherous open waters. Cargo ships were vital arteries of hope against the Germans but were easy targets for merciless submarines and aerial assault. The Arctic Convoy explores the constant vigilance, fear, and internal strife faced in close quarters and rough seas under duress. Its taut interpersonal drama and well-executed action scenes are admirable. But the film does suffer from sluggish pacing and strained exposition that muddies the runtime.

Half a century ago, Universal Pictures hoped to carry over the success of its entries in the short-lived disaster film vogue to naval combat movies, stirring some box office if few other rewards via dullish “Midway” and “Gray Lady Down,” which felt like bloated retro B-movies. Having revived the disaster genre with trilogy “The Wave,” “The Quake” and “The Burning Sea,” their Norwegian producers seem to be going the same route with “The Arctic Convoy,” about the perilous voyage of a freighter delivering supplies to Allies on the eastern front during World War 2.
