Trying to move on in life, estranged brothers living on a ranch in the middle of the countryside are brought back together when a series of incidents with a family member are eerily reminiscent of what happened to their father when he got possessed by a demon, forcing them to believe it's returned.
This was a decent enough if somewhat flawed genre effort. Among its better qualities is the strong startup that provides a solid base for the demonic activity to follow once everything is revealed. The early setpieces involving the brothers reconnecting and managing to come together again to investigate the strange circumstances surrounding their family with the symptoms resembling what happened with their father that allows for their reunion to take place gives this a decent enough starting point. Tying in the idea of the unnatural behavior and violent outbursts that signal something is wrong, setting the brothers up on their quest to figure out what's going on that ultimately leads to the overt possession and ultimate revenge plot at the center of everything, giving this a solid overall setup. On top of that, when dealing with the grisly aftereffects of the possession, the film scores incredibly well as there's some gruesome work here. The idea of the calling card for everything taking on the form of a spreading and bloody wound on the body leaves quite an impression with the effects going for goopy body-horror style undertones. With the big confrontations in the final featuring even more great effects-work as the practical nature if everything here including demonic beings emerging from victim's body's, the graphic contortions and dismemberments that occur with the possessed in control of the body, and the general grotesque appearance that signals the possession has taken place helping to make the action inside the restricted location even more potent with everything here coming across well enough to have a lot to like. There are some issues with this one that hold it down. One of the biggest drawbacks is the overly familiar and cliched storyline involving long-buried family drama and grief manifesting itself once again. This is a familiar route that plenty of other features have gone with as they try to make the idea of generational curses and long-hidden trauma mean something but it's just not different enough with the material to make much of an impression. Everything is by-the-numbers and routine to the point of making it feel far more dragged out in the beginning than it actually is since everything is building to the point of genuinely chilling horror elements in the final half. However, going once again with the route it halts the moment of this one at the very beginning and makes for a bit of a difficult watch getting into things with this type of setup. These are the main detrimental factors involved with this one.
Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language and Graphic Violence.

Not a bad little creature feature, actually. The acting wasn't bad. Nice back country aussie characters. Three brothers have a very unusual family problem. Some sort of demonic thing has claimed the life of their father, and is now effecting their youngest brother.
Whatever it is is getting worse, and threatens to kill all of them; and that's not to consider what will be unleashed upon the world after it's done with them!
John Noble does seem rather out of place in this outback fable, but he lends a certain classical level of charm to an otherwise colloquial film.
All in all, a gory/funny romp through B cinema.

As most reviews have acknowledged, the best thing about this film is the practical FX.
The family drama doesn't resonate as strongly as it could but it does build throughout the runtime. The father figure is sympathetic and a poignant "team-effort" moment at the end of the film lands surprisingly well. I didn't think they would but the characters won me over in the end, despite their flaws.
The pace is a little slow but things go hard enough in the last 20minutes to be worth the build up. Not only are the practical FX well produced but the way they are revealed to the audience, first in close-up, then in low light, before being shown in full glory is just fantastic.
Recommended for fans of When Evil Lurks (2023), Almost Human (2013) and Altered (2006).

The practical effects are outstanding in this grimy Australian horror with echoes of 'Relic' and 'The Taking of Deborah Logan' in the premise of dementia and Alzheimers Disease being a springboard of demonic possession.
The acting is top notch by the cast and they all seem like brothers going through this hell.
The ending is rather abrupt and doesn't really pay off but its refreshing to see the blood and gore well used and, from what I could tell, not much CGI effects used.
Kudos to the budget which was sparse but got across the dirtiest living conditions on this farm.
I predict these filmmakers have a bright future in this genre.

Oh, When Evil Lurks, it's a chest burster.
Continuing into Ahhctober 2024, I found another Australian horror to promote. But, barely. This is such a minor version of the great "When Evil Lurks" of 2023. I will say, though, this has INCREDIBLE special/practical effects. I will ALWAYS praise a movie that favors/uses practical over CGI. Especially, THIS well.
Two estranged brothers reunite when a family member suffers from a demon attack much like the father/head of household. This isn't a straightforward tale, but it's fairly easy to grasp. I just can't fathom these people surviving these chest-bursting demons.
I do LOVE Australian movies, especially the horror kind. SOOO many of them out there to enjoy. Problem here is, it's very self-contained. It all takes place in two locations and literally could've taken place anywhere in the world.
It's also very short - only 86 minutes, but it does feel SOOO much longer. Not much story here and yet, it's serviceable. Especially due to the effects, acting and it being well-shot. Slight recommendation.
***
Final Thoughts: Let's all support filmmakers like these. Practical effects need to be front and center. It's creative and shows heart.

I was expecting a much cheaper and worse movie if I'm being honest, so you could say I was a bit surprised. The effects were genuinely great, unfortunately they were in service of nothing.
The nasty "we must stretch this 10 minute idea to feature length" disorder is the main culprit. Stuff happens at a regular basis, don't get me wrong but it just feels like everyone's stomping in place pretending they're going somewhere. The dialogue especially feels like the actors were told the general idea behind a scene and ordered to improv, so they end up repeating the same thing over and over with minimal variation.
Very little about the plot and character motivations makes sense. I think the movie tried to crowbar in a "blood oath" explanation, but at a certain point... just go to a hospital.

Sparse, confusing plot. Thoroughly unlikable cast for the most part.
Dreary and derivative to the extreme.
The most of the creature effects seemed like they were practical and well-made. I also thought the one garage employee was a perfectly serviceable character. Haha, serviceable...get it? Get it!?
But the three brothers and whatever they were doing on screen just wasn't my bag.
And if the "disorder" of the title was supposed to be some metaphor of an affliction of ageing, that didn't work at all in the slightest one bit remotely to any extent by any means.
I don't even think knowing what was going on would make the film enjoyable. Nor does it need a sequel.

I usually don't like horror movies anymore as they are mostly boring to me. And the lot of them are so low budget that the acting and special effect are horrible.
But I believe in time, that this low budget Australian gem will become a cult classic.
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie from beginning to end!! The acting was pretty decent and the low budget special effects were amazingly gruesome.
On several occasions I caught myself yelling "Ewwww" out loud followed by a laugh of disbelief at what I had just watched!!! I gave it a 7 out of 10 for the type of genre it represented, but this movie definitely gets a 10 out of 10 on the gross scale with a commendation for its large "Ewwww" factor.
I would recommend this for anyone who likes this genre. As it never really had a dull moment, it keeps you on the edge of your seat and it's truly entertaining.

I recently watched the Australian film 🇦🇺 The Demon Disorder (2024) on Shudder. The story follows a family that reunites after their father passes away. As old tensions resurface, they uncover unsettling secrets-specifically, their father's bizarre activities that may have opened a literal gateway to hell in the garage. As demons escape and begin attacking, the family must band together to stop them and possibly save the world.
Directed by Steven Boyle in his directorial debut, the film stars Charles Cottier (Home and Away), Dirk Hunter (Rain Fall), Amy Ingram (In Our Blood), and John Noble (The Lord of the Rings).
This is one of those horror movies where the beginning and end far outshine the middle. The film's settings, lighting, and cinematography are top-notch, and the acting and dialogue feel grounded and believable. The opening sequence involving a cow was fantastic, and the demon "birthing" scene is the film's standout moment. The last twenty minutes brought to mind a mix of Pumpkinhead and Aliens, with well-executed costumes, makeup, and some enjoyable gore for horror fans.
In conclusion, The Demon Disorder has is far from perfect but has enough solid moments to satisfy horror enthusiasts. I'd give it a 5.5-6/10 and recommend it with tempered expectations.

While not sporting the best story, the most creative dialogue, or the most logical character development, one thing that gives a HUGE bonus to this movie, is its use of practical special effects.
Sure CGI is used. But unlike SO MANY movies that pander to the big screen or the lowest common denominator, it's not used as a crutch.
It's not particularly unique, or scary, but it's fun and interesting. Also, there are a few subtle comedic moments that sort of break the ice without breaking the flow.
It's a decent movie. They went kinda weird and cheap CGI at the end, but it's still a pretty good flick. Almost like if you crossed "Four Brothers" with "When Evil Lurks" and "Isolation" (2005).

Why does ANYONE still think this is interesting? It's the single most tedious trend in movie history. I would watch another eight thousand zombie movies, another seven billion movies about reluctant vampires with hearts of gold, if it meant never having to watch another post-millennial horror movie that's just an overwrought metaphor for some kind of human suffering. Usually it's generational trauma, this time it's generational trauma PLUS hereditary degenerative disease. I guess lacking any genuine creativity the writer thought just adding more trauma would pass for it.
The sheer self-indulgence of these filmmakers is incredible. Is it possible every single one of them thinks they're making some meaningful, hard-hitting emotional think piece? They're all identical, they're all miserable experiences, and no amount of gore effects changes that. Stop it. Stop making these.
It is, of course, made by Shudder, which should surprise no one.

It seems that the people who didn't like this movie (which is quite a lot unfortunately) didn't quite get the point of it. And while I can understand that, to me this movie is an absolute masterpiece. The use of a hereditary demon to represent either depression, anxiety, or more likely: dementia, was a fantastic way to build on the already tense atmosphere of the film, and not overshadow it with repetitive creature effects and violence. Yes, there is a cool creature in this movie, and a good amount of gore, some of which might be unnecessary, but overall its use of horror to expand the psychological aspect of the story and deepen the characters' bonds with each other worked incredibly well. This is a film I'll recommend heavily and will definitely be rewatching.

"The Demon Disorder" borrows many familiar tropes from the horror genre, which is unfortunate because the movie had real potential to stand out from the glut of forgettable releases today. The practical effects and makeup, in particular, are spectacular. The story tackles themes like generational trauma and the physical manifestation of grief, explored through three brothers who reunite when one of them appears to be possessed by a parasitic demon-a fate that also afflicted their father.
While themes like these have been explored countless times and are increasingly common in horror, to the frustration of many fans who crave something original, The Demon Disorder manages to reinvigorate them, largely thanks to its impressive effects. This strength makes sense, as the film's director, Steven Boyle, has a background in makeup and visual effects. The result is a slew of gruesomely impressive visuals that I genuinely enjoyed; with a different story, this could have been an outstanding horror film.
In the end, The Demon Disorder is a fairly average movie elevated by fantastic effects and solid performances from the cast. [5,8/10]

I wish I knew why I still pay for Shudder. Very little new content is added and when it is, it is either "Shudder exclusive" nonsense like this and In A Violent Nature or a "Shudder Original " like...well, name any Shudder Original, they pretty much all stink. This one is yet another average possession film, with the distinction of Australian accents. Shudder was much better before it was under the dubious wing of AMC. At least then there was the possibility of finding an older classic to revisit. Now? Not so much, plus all the new stuff absolutely suck. Skip this, and skip Shudder if that's at all possible.

I found this to be a mediocre supernatural horror movie that I watched. The story is your standard possession with one of them notice something odd with one of the brothers and soon discovering something strange happening. It's easily predictable on what goes on in the movie and doesn't do anything new to the genre. The only thing that is different is how the demon comes out of the victim body and acts like parasite inside of them. Other than that, the movie isn't that interesting at all and also does a family drama in it with one of the brother being away from them. It pretty obvious where the plotline goes and isn't that interesting. When it gets to the climax, it is also underwhelming since things happen quickly and ends an anticlimactic way.

Despite the fact of never having heard about this 2024 horror movie from director Steven Boyle, of course I opted to watch it, as I happened to stumble upon it by random chance. Given my love of all things horror, of course I needed no persuasion to give this movie a fair chance.
The storyline in the movie was adequate, although it was not as if writers Steven Boyle and Toby Osborne revolutionized the horror genre with "The Demon Disorder". While the pacing of the narrative is fair, the movie was lacking scary contents. And it was a shame, because that is what I enjoy when watching horror movies.
The only face on the cast list that I was familiar with was actor John Noble. It should be noted, however, that the acting performances in the movie were fair.
Visually the movie was okay, though you're not in for any jaw-dropping special effects moments.
Watchable, for sure, but "The Demon Disorder" is ultimately a horror movie that came and left without leaving much of a lasting impression on me. Is it a horror movie that I would recommend horror fans to seek out and watch? Well, no, not really. The script in the movie is a tad too mundane and generic for that.
My rating of director Steven Boyle's 2024 horror movie "The Demon Disorder" lands on a four out of ten stars.

First off, props on the practical effects. But I can't give you brownie points for it.
The story is stale and extremely tiresome. First 10 minutes I was glued. Then you lost me when the boys were at the house. What was supposed to be achieved here? Everyone appeared to be lost, and that left me confused. The plot and character development is pretty poor, it's like they tried to grab a little bit of everything and threw it into the bag.
Some of the acting was laughably over the top or void of emotion. The neighbours and home and away acting training really stands out here.
The practice effects was your strong point, you should had a monster flick, killing a few aussies, no one survives plot, so you could your no brain ending and still make a few people happy.
Sorry for 2/10, but that's an hour and a half I can't get back.
