I got blinded by the lights

It's an okay movie, but not what I was expecting story-wise. I do get why a lot of diehard Weeknd fans will like it, and I don't want to take that away from them, but coming from a semi-fan who really enjoyed the album, it could've been a lot better. A lot of fluff could have been cut to make a much better ending. And I'm not just talking about unimportant scenes, there are several moments where characters just stand and do nothing for like, 6 seconds or so. Basic information even slight fans of the Weeknd should know is spoon-fed, while critical information about the entire movie has to be pieced together as the credits roll. It is pretty emotional, it just could have been executed so much better. Also, if you at all suffer from epilepsy or dizziness, do not see this movie. There's no warning but there's a ton of bright rapidly flashing lights and fast moving camera angles.

it feels... unnecessary

Prefacing this by saying i am a huge fan of the weeknd, and was willing to give this film a chance after the idol. That being said, this film just felt wholly unneeded? It might be better than the idol, sure, but that's not saying much. But it didn't really DO anything, narrative wise, development wise, etc. The best way i'd describe this would be it feels like a long music video, with nice shots, and (maybe too many) songs, but lacks any real substance to it... i will say i appreciated some parts, especially when there was a dive into abel's introspection in the dream sequences. But the issue was, it really just didn't dive deep enough to feel meaningful, and ultimately fell flat.

Abel's acting is an improvement from his last stunt but it's not saying much. Coming from a place of love for his music and craft, i think he would be much more successful behind the scenes rather than in front of it (at least for now). Overall? I would watch it if you want to get a few laughs in from unintentionally funny scenes, and if you are a big fan of the weeknd, it's worth a shot.

I'm Spinning

A soft 5/10. Abel Tesfaye's Hurry Up Tomorrow flirts with greatness but gets caught in its own spin, literally. The overused spinning camera becomes more distracting than dynamic and pulls from an otherwise intimate movie that gradually finds its own rhythm. The small cast works well and the slow-burn structure kept me guessing what kind of movie it really was until it clicked into place. It tries a little too hard to feel surreal and there's definitely some ego stroking going on by The Weekend. A few memorable moments.. It's Trey Edward Shults and feels like it. It's ambitious, uneven, and intriguing.

It's an absolute trainwreck...

I honestly thought The Weeknd had hit rock bottom with The Idol, but this movie proved me wrong. I went in with low expectations, and it still managed to disappoint me on every level. This isn't a film - it's an overlong, pretentious disaster masquerading as art.

About 60% of the runtime feels like a glorified music video, 30% is pointless, dragged-out dialogue, and the remaining 10% is the camera spinning in circles like someone just discovered how a gimbal works. And The Weeknd? He plays himself - crying, sweating, sulking - in literally every single scene. I swear he made this movie just to show he can cry on camera. Mission accomplished, I guess.

Jenna Ortega is a great actress, but here she's completely wasted. She spends most of her time dancing to his songs, giving cringe "Genius lyric breakdown" speeches while he's tied to a bed. Yes, that's not a metaphor. That actually happens.

The film desperately wants to be deep and meaningful - a psychological journey, maybe even a metaphor for regret and fame - but it ends up being shallow, incoherent, and unintentionally hilarious. There's a viral clip where The Weeknd yells, "Shut the f** up, God!"* in the flattest delivery I've ever heard. It honestly feels like they just used the first take and called it a day.

I started taking notes halfway through. That's how bad it got. I won't even bother with spoiler warnings - you can't spoil garbage. Trash is trash.

The only joy I got was seeing people actually walk out of the theater during the second act. That gave me a weird sense of solidarity.

Bottom line: If you're not a diehard Weeknd fan who's willing to defend anything he does, don't waste your time. Unless you want to experience what it feels like to get emotionally bludgeoned for two hours by a weeping pop star - then by all means, go ahead.

Felt like a Survival endurance test

The title Hurry Up Tomorrow is incredibly appropriate-because the entire time I was watching it, I just wanted it to hurry up and end. Calling this a "film" is generous; surviving it felt more like a cinematic endurance test.

The plot is laughably shallow, padded with so much pointless fluff that the pacing is downright painful. Abel Tesfaye, a.k.a. The Weeknd, essentially plays himself-and not well. His acting is so stiff, it's almost impressive. Sharing scenes with Jenna Ortega only makes it worse; she effortlessly outshines him at every turn, making his performance look like a high school drama rehearsal.

To make matters worse, the whole movie is drenched in ego. There's a scene-I'm not making this up-where Jenna's character actually analyzes the deep themes of his music. It tries to present itself as some kind of profound artistic statement, but really, it's just a 100-minute commercial for his new album.

Abel, please-stick to your day job.

Self-absorbed rubbish

What a waste of time that was. Self-indulgent storyline with plugs for the latest songs. The last 15 minutes appear to have come from a different movie and are completely nonsensical. The earlier part is a major snoozefest with shaky camera work and repetition. Not sure how this was ever greenlight but presumably due to star power. At some point during the movie, someone says to Abel that he should avoid acting and stick to what he does best. Shame he did not follow the advice - that would have saved everyone their time and money. It looks like it will bomb in the box office which is understandable. Avoid.

Hurry up and end

This movie contains numerous spinning camera angles and a soundtrack that tries to imitate the Bladerunner 2049 at times. From the opening scene where the song went on a lot longer than it really should have, I already had a sinking feeling about the movie. Thirty minutes later and almost nothing about the plot has been revealed. Heck, Jenny Ortega hasn't even spoken a single word. What a complete waste of time. This movie tries way too hard to be surreal and it completely failed to do anything to make me care about any of the characters. What is this movie trying to achieve? I honestly have no idea.

Lacking substance

You are significantly more likely to enjoy this movie if any of the following are true: You are a Jenna Ortega stan. You love The Weeknd and his music. You like ethereal movies where metaphors and symbolism are the main draw. You don't mind visual storytelling with minimal actual story.

None of the above are true for me. I think Jenna Ortega is a highly talented actress and does not disappoint with this performance. The Weeknd also does a good job, although it's hard to tell since he's playing himself. And they are two of the realest celebrities out there, never afraid to stand up for what's right.

As for the movie overall, I found it overly slow and pretty boring. The story is super basic and could have been told in half the time. The visuals are cool but feel pointless. It will really depend on each viewer if the visuals and music are enough to make this an enjoyable experience.

Wednesday & The Weeknd

Was lucky enough to be at the first ever screening of Hurry Up Tomorrow in Australia and I'll forever flex that.

I'm doing my very best not to let my bias overpower my thoughts but this is pretty much everything I could've asked for as a fan of The Weeknd. I'd love to see Abel continue venturing into the world of cinema in the future.

The sound design and visuals are magnificent and Jenna Ortega's portrayal of Anima is incredible, which really shouldn't surprise anyone. There's a good amount of chemistry between herself and The Weeknd that sinks you into the immersion.

There's a couple of scenes that are straight up haunting and feel like they're ripped straight from a horror film. I can definitely see why Abel said that Jenna Ortega genuinely scared him.

But it's also surprisingly more emotional than I was expecting. The context of some of his songs from the Hurry Up Tomorrow Album is totally different to me now. People that aren't familiar with his music and the casual fans will get a cool insight into the deeper themes of some of his popular tracks as well.

Once again, it might be my biased lens that I viewed this film through but I wouldn't have minded a longer cut. Couldn't help but feel like there was a large chunk of narrative missing, and the film ended quite abruptly and very ambiguous compared to what I usually prefer from a film. But it's all I've been thinking about, so maybe that's the genius behind it.

There's so much more I could say but that's going into spoiler territory, so I'll leave it at that.

XO.

No rest/sleep for the wicked

Like the saying goes - no pun intended. I have to admit I was not too aware of the Weeknd. Seems like an interesting individual - also he can act. Not talking De Niro kind of level or whatever, but he can convey emotions .. also with Barry and Jenna by his side ... he's even more capable of shining through - also he is able to shine through his music too.

I have to admit, I had no idea what role Jenna was playing and you have it wrong too first time you are watching it -unless you have read the synopsis ... or the trailer gives it away - if that is the correct expression of course. We do have darker sides here - and you can say do not try this at home (or in a hotel for that matter) ... I was positively surprised ... the horror component ... the effects - the dialog ... and the depths of character. Still the message may be a bit too ... hammered into us! But it works - is there absolution? Is there redemption? Or is it trial by .. fan? Again no pun intended ...

Should've stuck to making music, Abel.

This is a movie I had my eye on for a while and I was interested in what was going to be about. Then, I saw some of the early reviews for the movie on Twitter and none of them got me excited for it. Now that I have seen the movie, I can only say this: WTF!

Positives for Hurry Up Tomorrow (2025): The cinematography looks amazing with a lot of nice colors. Jenna Ortega is very good and is clearly giving it her all. That's it for the positives of this movie.

Negatives for Hurry Up Tomorrow (2025): This is one of the most egomaniacal, self indulgent and unbearably pretentious vanity projects I've ever seen. As soon as I found out that Abel Tesfaye aka "The Weeknd" co-wrote the screenplay, I knew this wasn't going to be good, but it is so much worse than I could imagine it being. There is quite literally no story to this movie, it is just a series of events happening with no rhyme or reason. This whole movie feels like Abel wanted to tell me a story about a dream he had LAST YEAR. Speaking of Abel, it goes without saying that he is very clearly not an actor. There is one scene where he is being so over the top towards Jenna Ortega and she is out acting him without having to say one word. Later on, you have a scene where Abel is making the strangest facial expressions that I've ever seen and it feels like he never learned how to emote like a human. Also, you have Barry Keoghan in the cast and he literally does nothing in the movie and when he does play a prominent part in the movie, he gets killed off very fast. As I was watching this, I kept asking myself, "Why is nothing happening in this movie? Can something happen, I'll take anything at this point?" I know that Abel has a lot of talent in him because I've listened to his music, but with this movie it feels like he's trying to fail on purpose. I don't usually get any enjoyment criticizing people, but this movie is too much for me.

Overall, Hurry Up Tomorrow (2025) is a giant waste of time and while I can see a lot of hardcore Weeknd fans getting something out of this movie, there is nothing in this movie that I can latch onto. This is by far the worst movie of 2025 and that is including Snow White (2025).

Horrible movie

This maybe one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It has no plot. It's The Weeknd playing himself and most of the time it's just spinning close up shots of his face. It makes no sense at any point and it seems like it was created to stroke The Weeknd's ego rather than do anything else. Jenna Ortega's character is literally just there to talk about the inspiration for The Weeknd's songs. That's it. Just because a director thinks he is making an artist movie doesn't actually mean the movie is artistic. I want my 15$ back and I should be compensated for suffering through this movie. Also Barry Keoghan is in it.

Terrible Movie

Rating - 2.4: Overall, a dumpster fire as The Weeknd doubles down on showing he has no acting or filmmaking ability, and we need to have a dialogue about Jenna Ortega because continues to play the same monotonous character in every movie; but, this movie is watchable for how bad and pretentious it is.

Direction - Very Bad: The direction on a macroscale is messy as it tries to be this experimental, avant-garde piece, but it ends up being more pretentious and unfocused than meaningful; The direction on a microscale is terrible as none of the performances feel like they are conveying any emotion; The storytelling is not present as the movie doesn't build to anything; They build tension poorly because you don't really care for any of the characters

Story - Terrible: The concept is so convoluted as it is trying to show the feelings The Weeknd has about himself, but the movie just comes off pretentious rather than meaningful; The plot structure is nonexistent as the movie doesn't really build to anything and drags by having scenes that are longer than they should have been; The character writing is nonexistent as they try to present characters who have depth, but never actually give them it

Screenplay - Very Bad: The dialogue is very bad and unnatural; The humor is unintentionally funny, as I laughed very hard at the serious moments; The symbolism is so pretentious that you really don't care about the meaning at all; The foreshadowing is there, because you know exactly where this movie is heading, because of how it is constructed

Acting - Very Bad: Abel Tesfaye - Very Bad (Cannot portray any emotions, always off-beat, and has no chemistry with the rest of the cast; Even in the musical portions, it doesn't really feel like the showman The Weeknd really is), Jenna Ortega - Very Bad (We need to start having a dialogue about Jenna Ortega because I genuinely believe she cannot convey any emotions and plays the same toneless character in every movie; She tries to play this stalker, crazy fan, but it just comes off so poorly that it's more laughable than meaningful), Barry Keoghan - Bad (I feel like "Saltburn" fried this guy's brain as he keeps trying to play these weird characters that really don't suit his strengths), Rest of the cast - Very Bad (Just extras, but not good ones because they don't act correctly in the scenes)

Score - Decent: Interpretations of The Weeknd's new album because this is supposed to be a companion piece, but it is not really the best

Soundtrack - Pretty Bad: Should just be "Hurry Up Tomorrow" because this is supposed to be a companion piece, but it has about three or four songs and includes songs from previous albums too; It is not really mixed well to help tell the story, which is not great considering this is supposed to be a "companion piece"

Cinematography - Terrible: Might be some of the worst cinematography I have ever seen, as the movie just has these 360-spinning shots that are so close up to the subjects that the movie just feels incredibly nauseating; There were maybe two shots I thought were cool, but that does not make up for the terrible camerawork I had to sit through; The movie feels like it was shot by a Beyblade

Editing - Very Bad: Poorly put together, the movie has all these sharp cuts that are more comical than fluid

Sound - Decent: This makes the movie experimental

Visual Effects - Pretty Bad: Feels very low-budget, as the shots are so close up that it never leaves room to show any effects going on

Production Design - Pretty Bad: Feels very low-budget, as the shots are so close up that it never leaves room to show where they are; The concert settings are poorly utilized, as the camera is so up close it doesn't show the magnitude of the venue and how it affects Abel

Pacing - Pacing is incredibly slow, as this movie feels like a chore to get through, especially with its short runtime

Climax - Climax is relieving as it means the movie was finally over; The climax was poorly executed; The climax is literally Jenna Ortega doing the "You like Huey Lewis & The News" scene from "American Psycho," but like if she was doing it to Huey Lewis himself

Tone - Tone tries to match this experimental, surrealist thriller feel that The Weeknd tried to create with the album; but the movie is just so pretentious that the tone makes the movie laughable.

Swing and a miss

Feels like a rushed attempt at delivering something profound but ends up being a scattered, underwhelming experience. The pacing is uneven, the characters lack depth, and the storyline never quite finds its footing. It tries to juggle too many ideas at once, leaving most of them unresolved or underexplored. Despite its intriguing title, Hurry Up Tomorrow struggles to deliver on its promise. The plot feels disjointed, as if it's constantly rushing toward something that never quite arrives. Dialogue is clunky, emotional beats fall flat, and the overall execution lacks polish. It's a film that tries to be meaningful but ends up feeling forgettable.

Hurry up and please act

Abel's acting is honestly a disaster-it's flat, forced, and completely lacks emotional depth. Every time he's on screen bro was very sassy throughout the movie💅💅, it's hard not to cringe. He delivers his lines like he's reading them for the first time, and there's zero chemistry with the rest of the cast. It's a shame because visually, the film is incredible. The cinematography is beautiful, the lighting is polished, and the overall aesthetic is cinematic and immersive. But great visuals alone can't carry a film. Without a compelling story and a strong lead performance, it all ends up feeling hollow and forgettable.

I don't understand the low ratings!

I'm glad I saw in RPX I had my ticket weeks in advance. Phenomenal experience Trey Edward Shults is exceptional at his craft with It comes at night, and Waves should've been nominated years ago for cinematography and acting. Hurry Up Tomorrow hit the spot with ambient music often along with Abel's exceptional singing.

Such a thrill ride of wild stylish shots, so much emotions throughout, amazing thrill ride and the audience was superb too especially when it ended some clapped and one girl seemed intoxicated she was happy/ beautiful. Nice to see big fans of The Weekend and genuinely don't understand the 5.9 rating maybe off at times or might miss something but overall it's spectacular!

Ok maybe not that great but I loved it!

Experimental

I must say as a Weeknd fan I was pleased by the movie. It's not for everyone of course and I feel like that should have been marketed better in that aspect. If you want to go watch the movie, I suggest listening to the Hurry Up Tomorrow album first. Look at the lyrics and grasp the story that Abel attempts to tell. Overall, I understood the story after some additional research into the meaning of some scenes. Obviously, the movie is slow in some places but I really feel like it's being over-hated by people who haven't given The Weeknd a fair chance after The Idol's fail. Please see the movie with an open mind.

abel vs good acting

Oh my god what was this movie. This movie made absolutely no sense. The director kept spamming werid surreal dream sequences that no sense. Abel is an atrocious actor, and needs to stick to music. Jenna ortegas characters motives are LITERALLY NEVER EXPLAINED she just sings his music and that's her whole development! The writing was abysmal and i laughed out loud several different times at the sheer corniness of the dialogue, also i want that freaky irish man barry kheogen out of movies right now. I hate him he's so scary and is always in the freakiest weird movies of all time. This movie did not need to exist and shouldn't have.

Hurry Up for the Weeknd

Hurry Up Tomorrow is wonderfully crafted exploration of Abel's, 'The Weeknd,' motivations behind his lyrics. It is a bold creation that blends his music, captivating visuals and actors who carry the burden of soul crushing, internal turmoil quite exquisitely. The visuals included immersive, 360-degree pans to give a sense of depth of space, lens flares, changing screen ratios and a never-ending feeling that a scene is reminiscent of some great, 20th century classic cinema such as the Shining, 2001 and even Misery. The emotional turmoil presented by Tesfaye and Ortega on-screen make for a dark and disturbingly satisfying treat. If you are a fan of cinema or The Weeknd's music videos, you are in for a wild ride which serves as both an appropriate ending to Tesfaye's album trilogy and a kickoff for what is to come in the near future.

flaws don't justify the fury

I'll say this: the cinematography is sharp, the soundtrack is as beautiful as expected, and Abel's performance was genuinely impressive-strong work from Jenna and Barry, too.

That said, I feel like the movie as a whole was narratively scattered. I understand the ambition and deeply personal vision behind it, but I just wish the execution had given that vision more clarity, as many aspects of the storyline left me confused.

I really hope the backlash doesn't weigh too heavily on him, because it's clear this film meant a great deal. And tbh, I find the level of vitriol it's received so baffling. Sure, the movie has its flaws, but not to the point of being some "jarring watch" or deserving this kind of blind hostility. It feels like a lot of people are either still holding a grudge over The Idol or just looking for someone convenient to dump their collective frustration on. Either way, the outrage feels excessive and completely unwarranted.

Do you want to convince me Snow White was worst than this movie?...

Well I think this movie should have 1,7 on IMDb, I am not saying that Snow White was a masterpiece but clearly was a little better than this one, at least a 5 or 6 is deserved on IMDb but The Weeknd is proving for the 2nd time that he can't act or create a show where you can't feel disgusted and disappointed by his character or the storyline. If he is really being himself...what a j*rk he is, honestly. He always want to be this kind of bad boy, like the Godfather or Al Pacino in his old movies, but he just can't, I guess he is just a rich boy playing of being a gangster. His songs are amazing, perfect voice and singing but act is just not for him. I wish he have never created The Idol or this, it ruined my vision of him for sure.
