The Weeknd: Live at SoFi Stadium

The Weekend blows me away, and I did not even think of myself as one of his fans.... and then I watch this concert in SoFi Stadium and my jaw drops to the floor. TALENT to the power of TALENT. He sure knows how to captivate an audience, but its not just that, the lyrics, the music, he is a triple threat every time out. Here I am thinking I am not one of his big fans, and after watching this I feel like I got handed sandals and I need to start a Weekend fan club in some corner of this world. Brother what are you doing to me? Damn, and the hits keep coming, so effortless... just watch it for yourself. You won't need my review, you will have your own. (Hint: when you watch it put on the subtitles so that you see his lyrics as he sings them, you will not miss a single word and these words are powerfully poetic and add an extra dynamic to the performance. I did not know all his songs, so to me putting on the lyrics made it that much more special, and I understood why the crowd was as hyped as they were.)

PS. I never went to the live show, I just watched the video. One of the reviewers gave the video 6 stars because he was at the show and he felt the video did not capture how crazy and loud the crowd and atmosphere really was. When he re-watched it, he felt it was boring in comparison to his memory. That is just nuts, because to me the video is fantastic and I would love to go to see the LIVE thing next.

I bought tickets to his tour when it was just arenas. Then he canceled the arena tour to do a stadium. I never got to see him live. I watched this to see why he canceled the arena tour and I understand why he wanted to do a bigger show. But it still stings to know that I could have seen him if he didn't cancel the arena tour. But The Weeknd continues to be one of the best in the music biz. His vocals are unbelievable. The production of the music is really amazing. Overall, he always knows how to put on a great show! I hope I get to see him one day in the future. For now, I'll just watch this movie and other live videos on YouTube.

Absolutely no disrespect to the artist or the crew, but I saw this show twice at SoFi and it was so much better live. The show was filmed too tight and you couldn't tell how extraordinary the show actually was. It was not a boring show, but it felt boring on tv. The audience was too muted. You get no energy or crowd excitement and even the few times an audience member is shown, it is too tight and too cropped. If this concert movie was my first exposure to The Weeknd live, i would not pay to see him live because I would assume the show is boring. The videos I have on my phone are much more lively.

I was surprised by how dynamic The Weeknd's stage performance was. Even the songs that are kind of meh were better experienced this way. I was annoyed that this wasn't in Dolby Atmos though....come on HBO, do better for subscribing customers! Also, I could have done with less backup dancer frames and more of the live audience's interaction.

My mind has been blown into smithereens. I'm a big The Weeknd fan and was really excited when he announced the After Hours Til Dawn Tour, but I was disappointed when I found out the closest show to me was four hours away and on an inconvenient date. However, I was really happy when I found out that HBO Max was going to release a filmed concert. I had very high expectations for this and yet he somehow managed to exceed them. The Weeknd is very young and I might even go as far as to say that he is one of the greatest visual performers of all time! His stage and pyrotechnics blew my mind, especially during "The Hills". My only real complaints are too much cursing for my liking (I mean, I know it's TV-MA, but still) and I just beat an almost six year battle with epilepsy and the strobe lights are pretty strong in this. Those strobe lights still bother me. So, if you are one of my fellow epileptic warriors, I'm sorry, but it would be wise for you to avoid this concert.
