Why cancel it?

Just watched the first episode, and I had literally zero expectations for this, or maybe even negative, as I expected not to like it after watching the trailer. Even at the start, when Damon Wayans Jr. Knocked in the first scene and the laughter track audience was laughing like crazy, I thought I would skip this one. But it surprised me. The story and comedy work well, and most of the characters are likable. I liked Tetona's work in Home Economics, and here too, she's good at playing Nina. Her chemistry with Damon feels natural. Their characters and performances are what I liked the most. They've made the Poppa character mostly behave in a crazy manner, like a drunk teen, looking like Will Smith in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, wearing a reverse cap, casual street clothes, and a gold chain. But sometimes he talks sensibly. His name is Poppa in the show. I thought by "Poppa," they meant father, and only his son would call him that. But since it's his name, everyone calls him Poppa, even if he gets a girlfriend in a future episode; she will call him Poppa too. For me, it's not as funny and doesn't have as many good characters as The Neighborhood, but it's still a decent time-pass family drama that you can try. 3/5.

Update: I've watched 6 episodes now, and the 6th episode is the best one so far. The show feels like a celebration of overly dramatic, overacting, and weird scenes, which I don't particularly like-especially what happened between Poppa and Junior at the start of the third episode. But I enjoy nonsense as long as it's entertaining, and this show delivers on that. They also try to convey meaningful messages about parenting, family matters, and more, and the comedy mostly works.

The best part is that all the actors seem to enjoy every scene. Some might be overacting on purpose, just aiming to entertain, and the behind-the-scenes footage is a fun watch too. My rating remains 3/5 - a time-pass comedy show.

Update: Just finished watching the 18th episode. I've been tuning in to watch every episode as it came out, and it was always a fun time-pass show. Sometimes it was a bit much, but mostly it was entertaining. Most of the jokes landed well. And the casting was strong too - the actors playing Poppa, Damon, Ivy, and Nina, along with the side characters, were all well cast.

They obviously didn't know it was their last episode, but it was still a good one with funny moments. It ended on a cliffhanger, like most season finales do, but even as a series finale, it wasn't a bad episode at all.

I'm calling it a series finale because CBS cancelled it after just one season, which is really sad. It's terrible how they keep cancelling comedy shows without giving them a proper chance. I think this show deserved more seasons.

My rating is still 3/5.

A solid sitcom

The banter is witty enough, the characters are typical flawed goofy people like most multi-cam sitcoms. However the producers need to tone down the laugh track. The punchlines are too fast and the writers need to let the joke rhythm breathe a little bit more. Still, after two episodes, I think this has a chance to get renewed. CBS is hurting for viewership and it's possible that this show gets enough views on Paramount plus to keep around for a few seasons. And the writing should tightening up a bit a long the way. If you watched My Wife and Kids, this is kind of similar in terms of comedic tone.

Don't Get Give Up On It Yet! I Think It's Coming Into It's Own Fine

I watched all the episodes but I really didn't get into it until the seventh episode. I felt that the show has finally coming into its own. Damon Wayans and Junior do a fine believable job. The humor and writing is getting better as we get used to the characters and sitcom premise. I don't exactly where it is set. Maybe in New Jersey, Poppa worked on the radio in nearby New York City. The cast of characters are slowly coming into form as the season goes on. I enjoyed the Misery segment when Poppa has a nightmare about his co-podcaster in the niddle of the night. I felt the physical humor in the seventh episode added to the show.

Pretty great pilot

Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr are two of the absolute best in the business. The humor, the timing, they are great. The show needs room to grow though.

The women are unbearable. Why are women written so ridiculously unlikable these days? Seriously there's an audience for it or as usual the men are carrying the load and the women are along for the free ride?

Women used to be written to be supportive and funny and wise. Now they're just miserable shrews. Humorously if the men were written so poorly not a single show would survive. Yet you have father's and such with big hearts. The women are struggling to keep up. The ending redeemed the women some though so here's hoping.

I like it but...

It's a good show and I love seeing the Wayans men again so much. But unfortunately first off Damon jr's wife it pretty boring and not someone you want to see too much of in the show they should really fix that or just stop showing her as much second I agree with another reviewer that said you need better writers you definitely do. I'm not saying it's a bad show it's for sure a good show just with the Wayans men in it alone but definitely needs to written better and take the wife out or give her better story's and I'm really trying to get used to the therapist lady but she's just so meh I don't know maybe it's just me on that one. I feel this could be more about the dad and son and the dads ex wife oh well we will see how this goes.

Love It! Love it! Love it!

Poppa's House is my current favorite tv show. My husband and I look forward to seeing the new episodes each week. Both Damon's crack us up laughing. They have a great father and son chemistry. I can feel their love and respect for each other radiate off the screen. I love that it's a simple, fun, and clean family movie. So glad it's not full of curse words, sex scenes, and drama. I have watched each past episode multiple times and laugh each time as if it was my first time watching. I think the whole cast is great. It's nice seeing Elvin from the Cosby show as Damon Jr father in law. Look forward to MORE episodes.

Wishing Bob and Abishola were still on

Listen, this show took the place of one of my favorite shows. Bob and Abishola was one of the most diverse and talented casts on television. When I heard that Poppa's House would replace it, was not happy but I gave it a shot.

How is it possible for this show to be less funny than the Wayans Brothers show. Well, the older show had a better supporting cast and was better written.

Poppa's House felt like Damon and his son were just calling it in every episode. What a waste of talent. There was even a show about truth or dare. A full show just on that game. It was the laziest attempt at entertainment that I have ever witnessed.

I watched the whole season and left every episode disappointed. What a shame.

We Need You to Bring More Wayans Flavour!

I love seeing Damon Sr. And Damon Jr. Working together. However, Wayans, you can do better. I've watched all 4 episodes now because I have seen all your individual shows and I am a huge fan of the entire Wayans family and T. V. projects. I've been waiting to see the kids that have been constantly mentioned on Episodes 1-3. You did that with Episode 4. I been waiting to get some spice on the show, Wendy Raquel Robinson brought it on Episode 4! She needs to be a regular. She did not disappoint! I love Essence Atkins and she is great, but the show needs the antics Wendy Raquel Robinson is known to bring in all her roles. Plus, the show keeps talking about Poppa's ex and family issues.

The set change on Episode 2 was disappointing, why not keep it for a cool middle age new bachelor? Episode 3 was somewhat disappointing. Please, please do not make Damon Jr.'s character goofy like Jr. From My Wife and Kids. That character development was a spiral going downward.

What is really disappointing is the comedy and better writing. Poppa's part is solid and now the emergence of the mother (Wendy Raquel Robinson), but the rest needs some work. I like the serious lines and all the characters, but what all the Wayans family members do best is comedy. This show is missing that Wayans flavour.

I'm sat

It's so wonderful to see Damon Wayans on televison and with his son as well!! This whole cast is so amazing. I'm so excited that Essence is on this show. And now I have a new favorite actress; Tetona Jackson. I love all the dynamics on this show especially Nina and Jr.

I've been waiting for this show since the beginning of this year and now its finally here, I'm not disappointed at all. I love both Damon Sr. And Jr.'s humor. Although different, with them being father and son, it makes a great combination.

This cast truly feels like family and it will definitely be a comfort show for me. This is my type of television and I will be enjoying this ride thank youu.

I like the show butt..

It's good to see Damon Sr on a show. He's aged well and is still funny as hell. I like his old-school character with morals and values. However, his son isn't funny and the voices he does are lame. He wasn't funny on New Girl..it just seems like he's trying WAY TOO HARD.... The laugh track is annoying. They should have JJ on there more so that Sr. Could have a rival...their interaction was funny. Essence's character should be more like DeeDee on Half and Half becuase snooty big DeeDee was funny. Essence's character comes off as a bit annoying and not funny. I'll still support the show. Hopefully, it gets better.

Not funny..

I watched the show ....I almost got a headache since it was just so bad. The Wayans have been acting since I was a kid.. so I've watched them all my life but this might be their worst ever. The father and son team I get it...but they make the women on the show unbearable to watch. The women are not bad actors...it's the script... I just don't want to watch anymore. I was bored and looked at what new shows were out..guess what I was bored and annoyed after this show...it's very gimmicky and the fake laughter....annoying to listen to. Get new writers. The show isn't funny and the Wayans are all about funny...

Glad to see both Damons on TV

My husband and I watched and thought the show was really good and funny. There is great chemistry with all of the actors. I read where someone said they lasted 10 minutes, well sorry for them because the show was funny. Now all they need is Tisha Campbell to play the ex-wife. Her and Damon had such good chemistry working together on my wife and kids. Both Damons are great and really enjoyed them on the press tours. Their chemistry is magic. They also look like twins. We will watch again weekly and I think one the show is established it will get funnier. Essence also looks great and had also always been funny.

Don't Mess with Poppa

Over the years of my life, I've watched a lot movies with the different Wayans family members. Most everything, from "Scary Movie" to "Let's Be Cops", so I'm familiar with a lot of their comedy and family. I didn't have many thoughts when I saw early promotion for this series. It didn't seem like something I'd love or avoid, because the clips they showed weren't that memorable. I feel like, as I gave it a chance, it got better as the show went on. The writers got their footing. The storylines are very basic, and the comedy comes from both Wayans, mostly, and it's surprised me. It's now a show I watch every week and laugh out loud at. Do you know how few sitcoms can still do that? Not many. Now, as I mentioned, the show took a little while to set itself up, and the first few episodes didn't seem as impressive as the later episodes. Also, the writing really fluctuates between episodes. Some episodes are really, really silly, with Wayans, Jr. Just shrieking, making noises and doing all kinds of physical comedy. If he did much more, it would be too much, and the last commercial break before the last segment is always a forced dramatic moment. Not necessarily needed. Overall, though, the chemistry between real father and son is great, and the show is very funny, in my opinion. If you like any of the Wayans, or their previous work, you'll like this, too. I look forward to more seasons of this, and hope it doesn't get cancelled anytime soon.

not a hit

First off, the laugh track is distracting. I feel it was put there to amp up the lame jokes. I was very disappointed as the Wayans are usually comedy gold. Between the lame jokes, predictable plot, and that awful laugh track trying too hard to make you think this is funny,.....this show belongs back in the 80's and is a total fail. I sooo wanted to like this, but barely made it through the episode. This is an epic fail!. The plot was thin and predictable, the jokes were stale, and characters were predictable and cartoony. One dimensional and hard to watch. I wanted to leave nultiple times, but wanted to give this a fair chance as I have been a long time fan of the Wayans. Th.

Welcome back

I'm thrilled to see the Wayans family back on television! It feels like a long-overdue celebration for one of the most talented, versatile, and dedicated families in comedy and entertainment. For decades, the Wayans have been icons, bringing laughter to generations, and they deserve a significant level of recognition and support. Their humor is unique, often bold and fearless, tackling real-life issues while keeping audiences thoroughly entertained. Whether it's through sketch comedy, stand-up, or iconic films, the Wayans have contributed to the comedic landscape in ways that few others have.

In the current era, where many shows are short-lived, it's refreshing to see their work highlighted again. Comedy, like all art forms, evolves, and audiences sometimes forget that it's not about replicating past successes. Each new project the Wayans bring to the screen should be appreciated for its individuality and the creativity behind it. I've seen some negative reviews, but let's be real - every show, particularly in comedy, has its critics. What's most frustrating is that, often, these criticisms come from people imposing their personal desires for what the show "should" be rather than enjoying it for what it actually is. It's important to remember that comedy is subjective; not every joke will resonate with every person. Instead of looking for something to criticize, viewers should try to appreciate the show's own style and purpose. After all, the people behind it - writers, actors, producers - have poured their passion and hard work into crafting something original. It deserves to be enjoyed on those terms.

The Wayans family is proof that there's no single formula for a successful show. Comedy isn't a "one-size-fits-all" kind of thing. Over the years, they've proven that there are so many different approaches to making people laugh and think. From "In Living Color" to "White Chicks" and "Scary Movie," they've shown incredible versatility. Each project they take on offers something unique, crafted to reflect their bold style. And now, with their return to TV, I'm eager to see what new surprises they have for us.

It would be amazing to see more members of the Wayans family making appearances or collaborating on the new show. As a family, they're an absolute powerhouse, with every sibling bringing their own comedic flair and personality. Imagine the entire family together, each with their own distinct presence, contributing to a fresh, dynamic approach that only the Wayans could deliver. That would be comedy magic!

In the end, this show is an expression of the Wayans family's creative vision, and that's what we should respect and celebrate. Instead of trying to fit it into some pre-existing mold, let's give it the appreciation it deserves for being something authentic, different, and reflective of the talent that the Wayans have always brought to the screen. Their legacy is already rich, but this new show can add a modern chapter to that legacy. I'm here for it, and I can't wait to see how they keep challenging the boundaries of comedy and inspiring the next generation of entertainers.

This brings your thoughts into a full-fledged appreciation piece that acknowledges the Wayans family's impact, artistic vision, and the importance of supporting unique comedic styles.

Not For Me

I had this show set on record since I absolutely love the Wayans. I watched the first episode, it was too predictable. After watching the second episode, I cancelled my future recordings. They need better writers, as it lacks the Wayans family's comic style.

The Wayans Brothers show, starring Shawn and Marlon Wayans, was an absolute hit back in the day!!! It is currently being aired because it's still hilarious today as it was in the 90's and I still watch it. That was a show I hated they cancelled.

As for Poppa's House, I have stopped watching and would not be surprised if it gets canceled.

The Wayans Are Comedic Legends!

I love it already! It is great to see Damon Sr as an on screen father again! Poppa's House has an authentic comedic style that causes instant nostalgia, from the audience's laughter to the bloopers. YES I SAID BLOOPERS! We get to enjoy Damon Sr. And Jr. Together, and that makes me more excited about what cast members are joining soon. I'm sure that I can speak for many people when I say that " I MISS THE WAYANS FAMILY". Anytime there is a Wayans, you should be watching, listening, and tuned in; trust me. Everything the Wayans family touches is classic, original, and QUICKLY becomes legendary, if not already. They even showed the bloopers at the end of the episode, how classic is that? Yes I said bloopers again, bloopers are what brings us closer to the actor's mistakes and invites us into their world of acting. Anyways, just watch it, enjoy it and expect Poppa's House to be around for a good time and a long time!

Forced Laugh Track!

Another ridiculous sitcom that apparently is not funny enough on its own. That is what the laugh track is for: to cue us when to laugh even though there is nothing really funny to laugh about other than someone put money into this waste of space. Much like The Upshaws! Stupid. Nothing original. Not even good acting. Anyone who thinks this show is worth the time are folks who have nothing going on in their lives and do not expect better coming from the creators of this space-taker-upper! Insipid! Meaning lacking flavor! I am 75 words shy of the requirement here so I am taking up space as well!!

I can't give it zero

The only redeeming thing about this show is Damon sr and jr on the same screen. I am shocked that they. Put their names on this refuse. Their talent certainly doesn't show through the awful writing.

There is nothing new and fresh about this show. The laugh track is annoying. It frustrates me that so many people associated with comedy for so many years could make something this poor.

I am extremely disappointed that the Wayans family has put its name and at least some effort into this show. I have watched three episodes in an attempt to give it a chance. Hoping it was just a slow start. I can't waste my time any longer.

I could have used two words instead of 600 to review this. It stinks.

Poppa" Brings Back the Magic of '90s Sitcoms

"Poppa" is an absolute delight-hilarious, heartfelt, and full of charm. From the moment it starts, it captures the essence of classic '90s sitcoms, bringing back a wave of nostalgia while keeping things fresh and engaging. The humor is sharp, the characters are lovable, and the storytelling feels both familiar and new. Every episode delivers laugh-out-loud moments, relatable situations, and a warmth that's rare in today's comedies. I'm so glad this show is out-it's exactly what TV has been missing! If you love sitcoms, Poppa is a must-watch. The Wayans family has always been underrated, yet they consistently adapt to the times, proving their comedic genius.

Lasted 10 minutes

I typically like these characters but in my humble opinion, this just died and in my house and lasted all of ten minutes. The commercials were the better part!

I am not sure what I expected, but it felt like ten minutes of silly slapstick with a constant audience laugh track. It just nothing for me and not one joke had me look up from my phone.

I hope for their sake it improves and gets popular, but I'd much rather watch MNF and I am not that big of a football fan!

Even my wife agreed to me, it just did not have a good plot line to pull you in and on the first, the pilot, that is sad to say.

Awesome show that has great teaching moments mixed with comedy

This show is pure genius! The Wayans family delivers once again with a brilliant sitcom that blends comedy with a meaningful message. It carries the legacy of The Cosby Show while bringing its own fresh and dynamic energy. Watching Damon Wayans Sr. And Damon Wayans Jr. Share the screen is a joy, showcasing their incredible chemistry and comedic timing. The writing is sharp, the humor is spot-on, and the heart of the show shines through in every episode. The cast is phenomenal, and every moment feels authentic. Thank you for this amazing gift-it's a must-watch for anyone who loves smart, family-driven comedy!
