Worried over her missing sister, a woman and her husband hear a rumor about it being tied to other disappearances in the area relegated to a mysterious swamp and decide to investigate, eventually bringing them into contact with a mad doctor and his monstrous creations forcing them to stop it.
This was a massively entertaining old-school creature feature throwback. One of the best aspects of this one is the general setup that allows for it to follow through on its tone and approach. The simple storyline here is quite fun with the brief bits about the townsfolk who are involved in their own individual plotlines about dealing with the sisters' disappearance or the general state of the husbands' affair with the sister and the series of disappearances at the swamp which all manages to setup up small-town life rather nicely. This goes along nicely with the idea of the doctor working with his assistant creating a series of monstrous deformities in his lab in the middle of the swamp who's creatures are responsible for those disappearances which creates a cheerful and cheesy old-school setup about a mad doctor making monsters in the middle of nowhere and a group of locals getting caught up in the middle of everything. That brings about the fun, low-budget attacks that are present throughout this one. Featuring the deformed creature coming across random strangers in the swamp and brutally killing them, there's some fun work here involving the painter wandering down by the lake, the creature appearing to take the sister and her friend, and the series of encounters at the lab where they try to escape only to get caught up in the creatures. With these all managing to be quite enjoyable in this kind of low-budget setup where it effectively evokes the spirit of the original drive-in series, highlighting the main issue with this one involving the generally obvious cheesy low-budget approach that makes everything front and center. From the production style, the effects work, and the simplistic approach hammering home the idea of everything taking place in this setup, it becomes quite plain what's happening and is the main factor holding it back.
