Club Lingerie

You can't look at this movie as the next "Citizen Kane." Sure, it's low budget. Yes, it doesn't take itself seriously. True, the performances weren't "Oscar worthy" (many scenes look like they were shot in one or two takes). But all of these things are part of the movie's charm. In fact, I wasn't expecting to like this movie as much as I did.

It has a slew of offbeat, eccentric characters, including: the "cult film goddess" Bouvier (the club's owner), a girl on skid row, an old dude on all fours getting whipped by a dominatrix, a hyper fire-and- brimstone preacher, a transvestite discoursing with a puppet/Muppet (it's random, but it works), a detective and a crime photographer that look like they were pulled out of a 40s film noir, and a plethora of hot girls in lingerie (one of my favorites--played by Sydney Raye-- has a tantalizing strip tease to make her abusive boyfriend jealous).

I was surprised that the "lingerie girls" had so much natural charisma on screen and were decent actresses. Yes, it's a "murder- mystery," but it's actually a laugh-out-loud comedy that's a nod to the sleazy "sexploitation" films of the 60s and 70s. It's a throwback to the type of movies that John Waters shot with Divine before he went "mainstream" (what he affectionately called his "Trash Trilogy"). It's not meant to be taken as a "serious, highbrow, big-budget movie." It's campy, exaggerated, fun, and outrageous. I thought it was a hoot!

Club Lingerie is a club where women can earn $50 a night by hanging out in lingerie. Except you'll also be proposition for sex for money by customers, and the also the owner arranges an auction for worn underwear?

I don't think retakes existed in the making of this, even when clearly reading from cue cards, various people flub their lines, repeat the correct one, and it all stays in the movie. Bits of the sets fall down or apart and I can't tell if it's deliberate or accidental.

This is just absolutely baffling. Like, it's dreadful, but it's also kinda hot, and weirdly entertaining? The tone shifts at the drop of a hat from sleazy titillation, to campy comedy, to murder mystery.

This feels like it shouldn't exist, and that no one should actually be able to watch it. It should only exist on a VHS tape in the home if the person that made it. I'm quite glad it does exist though.

I usually cringe at the phrase "cult classic in the making" or any implication similar to that in a movie review but I'm TELLING YOU ALL PLEASE go check out Jared's filmography. Especially if you are a fan of anything out of the box and need a fix of otherworldly mind melting cinema. To me Club Lingerie (out of the work I've seen of his) is the best example of his work. Filled to the brim with extremely quotable lines & laugh out loud situations. You can never prepare yourself for what Jared is going to throw at you! One minute you're sitting there thinking it can't get any better than this...then a T chaser puppet comes out of no where. Amazing stuff absolutely love you Jared.
