Shane Nigam, Neeraj Madhav, and Antony Varghese in RDX: Robert Dony Xavier (2023)

RDX: Robert Dony Xavier

6/10

Good action choreography and great effort by the cast. That's it.

RDX offers good action sequences. But the script fails to impress. Malayalam film industry is going through a hard phase. We have been provided with too many poor movies which lead us to a point where we get so excited or impressed over slightly above average movies.

Most of the scenes felt illogical because of the situations and the things they do. The main character's friends are not there. Their uncle who's a policeman is not there. It's always just the 3 leads fighting their own battles. The climax made no sense at all. I'm not gonna spoil anything.

The song was unnecessary. Pepe was so good and so was Shane. Neeraj did great with action scenes but lacks the mass aura.

It works better if you watch with an electrifying crowd.

Great modern action movie using 90s template story

RDX has its fair share of problems, maybe because it's the director's debut, but it had more than enough to look over those for me, and since even with films like "Thallumaala" such proper action-oriented films still are not always sight that is seen in Malayalam. The film has what feels like a template 90s Malayalam action movie story and for that, they chose the early 2000s as the time period. But those 90s movies were more about the firebrand dialogues that would hype you up which would end with a bang of action, which, even though it wouldn't look that great, was not bad, and was entertaining enough for the time. Here, they chose to showcase the villains in a way that we are already enraged enough, so the story flows with just enough exposition and the rest would naturally lead to the action scenes, and then filled it with a variety of settings for the action. Neeraj, gets the least focus among the three, as Xavier but his dancing skills are converted into the nunchuck-wielding martial artist and works great with what he has. Anthony Pepe, following his flavour of action from "Angamaly Diaries" and "Ajagajantharam" shows off his "naadan thallu" and comes off as the hardest hitting "boxer". Shane as Robert does look like the hero here, pulling off romance and action without any problem and also clearly showing he's much more than a "depression star" as many like to call him. The three of them made a great team together and the mere presence of Babu Antony, the OG martial artist star of Malayalam makes it a great experience (even though I would have really liked it if he had more to do in it).

Now, the movie does have a lot of problems. The flashback love story was a bit dragging even though the 90s music filling that space and hitting us with nostalgia was a clever way to not make it feel too laggy. The action by Anbarivu was great but the cinematography and the editing of the action scenes themselves could have been a lot better.

However, despite all the problems, it was a great experience watching something that simultaneously satisfies those who miss the 90s and those who want a decent action movie of modern times.

Action choreography entertainer

Action choreography, direction and background music made the movie.

If you insist on a story, you might want to carry a balarama with you.

Nothing Nolan about this movie - simple stuff, stylish action weaved into emotions. With a no-star cast, the director has been able to pull off a pretty good movie.

Background music had a freshness to it and complimented the action very well. Facial expression closeups backed by Sam CS' BGM.

Action choreography is very well done, lot of meticulous work has gone into stylizing each and every shot. Acting performances have been great - good screen presence from Pepe, Shane and Neeraj. Pepe stood out a little more.

It is a light stylized action movie.

RDX - An explosion of an Entertainer

RDX is a well established Action packed movie following the footsteps of Ajagajanthiram & Thallumala. Anbraivu's action is the major highlight of the movie with impeccable action scenes. Anthony Varghese, Neeraj Madhav & Shane Nigam, the male protagonists performed whole throughout the movie with slight upper hand by Neeraj & Shane. Background score & songs by Sam CS also helped the movie to be more interesting. The antagonists played by Vishnu Agasthya, Sandeep, etc delivered their finest performance and I will consider that as the backbone of the movie. Family sentiments and romance was perfectly fused with the high octane action. Cinematography by Alex. J. Pulickal was top notch. Editing by Chaman Chacko deserves a loud round of applause for making RDX a crispy explosive one.

The lady characters played by Mahima, Aimie, Mala Parvathi deserves special mention.

All in Whole, as the name denotes.. RDX is mass destruction Explosive.

Watch it in theaters for the amazing experience.

8.7 on 10 is my score.

A theatrical treat for action enthusiasts! [+74%]

I'm so proud of Nahas Hidayath for overcoming all the obstacles he faced as a filmmaker (including shelving his first film with Antony Varghese) and surprising us this Onam with a banger like RDX! Here's a pure action entertainer that we can add to the likes of Ajagajantharam and Thallumaala, with higher emotional stakes than both those films. The three leads - Robert (Shane Nigam), Dony (Antony Varghese), Xavier (Neeraj Madhav) - share great brotherly chemistry and that helps elevate even some of the ordinarily written scenes.

Nahas attributes distinct specialties to the fighting styles of each protagonist - something that, I felt, was picked up from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - heck, we even have a character like Master Splinter (Babu Antony). Robert's kicks are crazy, Dony's punches are thunderous, and Xavier's good with nunchaku. Plus, when we have stunt masters Anbarivu on board, the action blocks are carefully designed, choreographed, and stylized. The introductory fight (during the flashback) is the only one that felt a bit out of place, and it's also because, at that point, I was only getting used to seeing Shane Nigam and Neeraj Madhav execute action the way they do in the rest of the film (whereas Antony Varghese had already proven his point!). Out of all the set pieces, my favourites include one that takes place on a boat, one inside a colony full of thugs, and the climactic showdown outside the hospital. The good thing is that the story necessitates the action, not the other way round.

The cinematography work also gets better with each set piece. Sam CS produces a riveting score that not only underlines the action, but also the breather scenes in between. The antagonist (Vishnu Agasthya) is splendidly portrayed and his viciousness is felt from the very first scene. The guy emanates a kind of naturally devilish charm that's been lacking in Malayalam actioner villains lately. Mahima Nambiar, who plays Robert's love interest, also does well. She even gets a whistle-worthy moment in the final act. Speaking of whistle-worthy moments, Babu Antony gets the best one in the entire film (a treat for us '90s kids).

Big thanks to Sophia Paul for bankrolling this venture, trusting Nahas and his team's conviction, and offering a great addition to the list of kickass Malayalam actioners!

Action packed treat for 90's kids

This film has taken malayalam cinema action to a new level. Anbuarivu combo just makes this a visual treat for all martial arts enthusiasts.

The movie just takes off from the first scene. Characters are well written and the script is as crisp as it can be. Actor Lal and Byju have done a good job.

The bgm will keep you glued and every scene will leave you wanting for more. Shane Nigam's role is the main highlight.

Shane Nigam, Pepe and Neeraj are just fab. This combo works and this film has all the elements to be a cult action entertainer.

Grab a pop corn and don't miss this film in theatre.

Dunno about the hype, but a 1-time watch for sure.

This film has received all sorts of acclaim since Onam and has almost been this sleeper hit. Now it's out on Netflix, had to watch it and I'm probably late so I'll skip the plot.

The plot is almost generic, something you might watched over the years in B/T/Kollywood. Not sure if Mollywood has made this before. The parts that were good about the generic plot - relatable friendship, you care for the 3 characters. The action - decent enough to not be over-the-top; some sequences were well done. Other than that, I.....don't know if I enjoyed anything else....so it's safe to say that I didn't enjoy the film as much as everybody else seems to have.

I don't know if the hype and the praise for this film have been so high because this was a 'breath of fresh air' in Mollywood or if King of Kotha high such high expectations and bombed, so everybody went to watch RDX and had a good time...? Not sure but there's only one way to find out - I gotta watch KOK.

'No satisfaction'..paisa poyaccu...

The start was powerful, including the attack on family and the villain's show, Don't know what happened after that, unwanted, cliché scenes, acting; overshowing that this is near millennium.

The build up is super when the villains enter and the heroes and family we so desperate to escape. But the problem is... some silly karate moves cannot save you from people with dagger and knives.the villains were clearly shown in queue to attack the hero just like old movies.(avan adichit njan adikkam, alle kallakali aakum). It is the peak of dissatisfaction when the villains always get only punches and the whole family had to suffer a lot including a kid.

''Yeah,u r right ''it is not a movie like jailer, then why they have to show so much violence against a family and no satisfaction in repaying.... It ente abhipraayam, Nanni, namaskaaram.

Whistle blowing movie

For some one like me who whistles for only intro scenes , I would say u will keep whistling for whole movie. No superstars in cast, still the movie captured the audience's attention and gave them a entertaining experience. 100 percent entertainer and a sure shot Paisa vasool movie. A must watch movie with packed audience to feel the vibe. Not sure if OTT experience would be the same. It truly has the soul of Indian commercial cinema as the audience get out of their seats to clap their hands and celebrate the movie. Director inspite of directing a commercial movie for the first time, did a decent job and is at par with experienced professionals.

RDX boys should visit some College's in Kerala

RDX boys should visit Bishop College's Arun Aravind. That could be a new trend in Kerala. Other than that the film is a fight-oriented film with unnecessary slow-motion, and underutilized actors. There could've been more comedy like seen In Harihar Nagar, a restructured combo of those youths had that potential. There are many youths out there, who could be in combo role films, if writers can take the chance to visualize them together and provide roles that make them act with passion. I feel the currently orphaned and rusting ones that needs to band together are Unni, Siju, Vinay, Amit, Chandunath, etc. When you hear about a Vineeth film, a Nivin film, a Dulquer film, a Lijo film, etc one can imagine what other actors will be there in that film. The one's I have mentioned are not in any youth combo films. Among them, only Unni had the brilliance to venture out by himself when no one was thinking films with him. Then there is Dhyan, who simply wants presence, and the size of the projects doesn't matter to him. Another thing about the film is the showcase of Vypin, doesn't matter if they're educated or not. All of them have that disease of violence in them, that could only be rooted out by passing over. Some of them are professionals in interpersonal violence and scheming. So that was a closer to reality element in the film. I was looking forward to see Babu Antony's full-fledged fight but just a short nunchuck action. Such a Malayalam movie legend deserves a lengthy kollywood/tollywood film type action sequence that justifies the hype his older films had. I hope some fanboy will be ready to make a Padayappa style film with him as an still kicking, yezdi riding elder of the family with that long hair. There is a huge scope for such silver haired, badass, hero-type films. Anyhow, films like RDX is an indicator that more and more film makers are turning to use violence as the main element of their film, simply because they don't have a story or the skill needed to tell a good story. That is where some old films stands test of time. If thallumaala kind of zany songs were included, this could've been called Thallumaala II. Anyhow, not an ideal family film by any means, and not for impressionable children. A fun action film with necessary drama to hold it, and something that could be seen with friends and with other adults.

Just another fight movie for adrenaline junkies

The main story revolves around two brothers and their friend who are having exceptional skill in martial arts who seek revenge on a bunch of hooligans that caused some public unrest and later attacked one of their homes. In terms of realism, I would say the fight scenes seem pretty fictional to say the least, most likely if you're an adrenaline rushed youth who enjoyed movies like Thallumaala, perhaps you'd think this is amazing. There are scenes where the 3 of them literally go on a rampage and beat up a whole neighbourhood of goons who were armed with lethal weapons while the 3 protagonists being fairly bare-handed. Since the whole movie revolves around the fighting skills of these brothers, I feel they should've put some effort into making the fight scenes more believable by making the protagonists seem more human and less "super-hero" like and lesser gravity-defying stunts which make no sense even for a martial arts expert.

Stands Out..

RDX is a great watch. Anbairav's action and Sam. CS bgm were a perfect mix. Despite not knowing the actors at all, I was still hyped up for every character. The best part was the film follows the commercial format, the first half generates questions and second half gives answers. At the end all the action is justified.

The setup was established well. Screenplay is well structured. The melody of THE song will hold on for a long long time.

But due to the recent trend of top tier films, in some places we expect elevations and dialogues. All that will be compensated with the intense pre climax and climax.

A full on action film which could have had a best story

I watched RDX just today. It is one of the best Action film I have seen in recent years. The film's action is made well with great camera work and also a great choreography. The slow motion in those action scenes were wonderful and apt to make me feel the impact of the scene. The editing and direction deserves another kudos as the scenes were arranged in a flow with impactful scenes were added beautifully added before the action sequences.

Only downside I felt about the film was that the story could have been made better especially the emotional scenes could have been made more meatier.

Overall the best Action film I have seen this year.

RDX - PUNCH, KICK & CRACK - RIP BOX OFFICE

***RDX Malayalam Movie Review***

Directed by Nahas Hidayath starring Shane Nigam Neeraj Madhav & Anthony Pepe in lead role...

KICK, PUNCH AND CRACK -- RDX review in one line...

Storyline not at all unique but the making quality is absolutely fantastic...

The movie able to connect the audience...

Anbaraiv as action choreographers had just choreographed the actions which elevates the film to the top..

Performances of the lead 3 were outstanding..

A perfect movie watchable during this Onam Festival..

A must watch theatrical experience to feel the punche & kick.

A movie when released its first look didn't have any expectation but now it just swiped away other 2 onam release and gearing towards the Box Winner.

Expected a lot...

Watched the movie in OTT just now. I was hearing all superb reviews for RDX, so was expecting a visual treat. Haven't watched a memorable movie for a so long time, so was hopeful, that RDX is going to fill that void. The movie started well, and then go on and go on and ...finally end. What to say!!! Hmmm...one thing is sure! My wait for the kiddilan movie continues..., RDX couldn't meet my expectations. It failed miserably to satisfy the hype it created in my mind. I see many saying this is a must watch in theater. May be since I watched it in OTT, or may be the expectations were high... not sure what went wrong in this case. What I felt is, the movie lacks a great story, the plot is good, but couldn't develop into something really great ( for me) after showing potential. After some point, it is all action.. one after another with no real plot in between...stunt after stunt.. even then, the stunt choreography couldn't fully engage me as a viewer. The climax is ok, but felt still lacking. Overall, a average movie for me.

Pumping

I caught RDX in a rickety theatre in Muvattupuzha at about 10 in the evening because tickets were not available for better theatres during the Onam week. This was my first time at a single-screen theatre in Kerala after Oru Yamandan Premakatha in 2019. And boy was it an experience of a lifetime. It's clear from the film's opening sequence that the makers know how to concoct a true heart-thumping action film, regardless of how many ropes or how much editing went into the stylization of the action sequences. I was bowled over with the pacing, the characters, and the whole mess they get into. The visual weightage of the sets is something that I dug more. Not least because of the chaotic whistling and shouting of my fellow audience during the show where each entry and re-entry of the primary characters elicited a rousing response. Though I don't remember hearing anyone clapping.

RDX is a true big screen film and must be watched with friends who love action and a story with artificial hype. I paid about 150 rupees ($2) for the show and I think it was totally worth it. One of the best I've seen in 2023. 8 stars.

Theatrical experience

As I mentioned above, it's for theatre experience. There's nothing much is there in the film. Just 3 friends was enjoying their life, out of sudden in Cochin carnival they fights with other gang, there they're all life changes. I'm not going to spoil it. You must watch it. Far - way more far better than realistic crap. Cause I hate those movies, not all, but when all director's catches into same genre, doesn't workout. That's why Malayalam film industry is still down. Nobody wants too much of realistic film. I'd recommend this movie (not highly). A moderate film, nothing much to be seen. Based.

80's story filled in between six action set pieces.

Robert, Dony and Xavier are basically bros who seek an opportunity to create mayhem. They are martial artists too, trained by Xavier's father while Robert and Dony's father Philip doesn't approve their shenanigans. After an hiatus involving non-violence, their casual brawl from the past puts the family at risk and RDX have to take matters into their hands to safeguard the family. But it's not an ordinary brawl anymore and RDX have to realize, it will take a lot of nunchucks, punches and kicks to take down this opponent.

It's a threadbare storyline and there isn't much innovative story wise. It's a revenge story and all that matters are the six action set pieces choreographed by Anbariv and good background score to elevate them. The first half was pretty mediocre with the three action scenes not really leaving any impact and the actors too try to make merry from what's offered to them. The story moves in a decent pace and the sole advantage is that the first half doesn't drag.

The second half is where the film shines with three terrific action scenes which raises the bar as well as tension. It's all non-stop action here and it stays entertaining till the end. The trio gets a lot of slow motion shots to show their heroic side, with Neeraj Madhav using the nunchucks in the best way possible while Antony Varghese packing solid punches. It is Shane Nigam who is given ample scope to spread his charms while showcasing his action skills. The problem is they aren't the typical martial artists and thankfully the well conceived action scenes, elevate them too.

The best action movie ever produced in Malayalam Cinema !!!

The film's pulsating score heightens the tension and amplifies the impact of every action sequence. The sound design immerses you in the chaos, making you feel like you're right in the middle of the action. The auditory experience adds another layer of excitement to an already electrifying film.

Beneath the adrenaline-pumping exterior lies a film with heart. It explores themes of friendship & family. The characters' emotional arcs are woven seamlessly into the action, ensuring that the film resonates on a deeper level.

And then comes the climax - an exhilarating crescendo that delivers on all fronts. It's not just a culmination of physical clashes; it's a culmination of emotional arcs, rivalries, and the overarching plot. The climactic showdown is a symphony of explosions, emotion, and strategic brilliance, leaving you in awe of the filmmakers' creativity.

Goosebumps !!!

A complete entertainer...!!!

A perfect theatrical material with relatable emotion, love & family stuffed with some of the finest action stunts mollywood witnessed ever...Thanks to Anbariv without whom this is just an average flick... Indeed a benchmark for mollywood in terms of a neat mass entertainer that too without a big stars of mollywood especially shane nigam proves his potential again even in action flick... While the screenplay is seamless not even a single momentum lost... Same cs is a most underrated music director and "NEELA NILAVE" is into the list of every music lovers...in a loop mode... One time watchable

In recent times, platform ratings seem susceptible to modification, with "The Jailer" and similar examples highlighting this trend. Unfortunately, this particular film, deserving less than its 7 rating, disappoints due to its uncomfortable fight scenes. The filmmakers' insistence on showcasing every move in slow motion fails to excite the audience, raising questions about their creative choices. Such repetitive techniques not only dilute the impact but also test viewers' patience, diminishing the overall viewing experience. The story, although simple in its premise, fails to engage the audience effectively. Without compelling twists or well-developed characters, the narrative falls flat, making it challenging for viewers to invest emotionally or intellectually. In essence, the simplicity, devoid of engaging elements, renders the story forgettable and fails to leave a lasting impression on the audience.

Bomblastic entertainer

It's a nice choreographed action movie. The audience always supports the film if it's well made and the box office success of this movie proves that. All the lead characters did a great job, and the teamwork from the crew made a significant impact. The production design seemed a bit artificial, but the editing was top-notch

I would have gone for a 9/10 star but the second half was kinda slow for me. Moreover, the director didn't give much preference to Babu Antony which was not well received by the audience(including me). Many people watched the movie to see his action scenes, but there was nothing 'punchy' from Babu Antony.

I liked the soundtrack, especially the movie's background music (BGM), which made the movie more impactful. Kudos to Sam CS.

Definitely give it a watch, especially if you are an action and fight lover. You will like it.

Overhyped, one time watchable only

I didn't see the film in theatres so all along until it reached out in OTT I was hearing how great the film was n it's the first martial arts film n things like that...Tbh it's an action oriented film n no way near a martial arts movie, a few bits hear n there resembling martial arts that's it...Abrid Shine was the first director to make a proper martial arts film but it was lacklustre n boring...In this movie, I really expected a martial arts film with similar choreography like u see in asian films but ur going to be highly disappointed cos they've hyped the film to the core...The theme is centred around a martial arts school but ironically there's very little martial arts n more of slow motion choreography, bgm n poses...It's a one time watchable film, I really can't trust anybody's reviews anymore until it releases on OTT...Marketing n hype has really degraded a film's actual review n this is one of those very good examples. Strictly one time watchable.
