There was a time when Sunny Deol was the reigning action hero as he had charisma and personality to pull off the action-drama roles with ease. After a long gap, he emerges back from the surface and gives you a punchy hardcore masala film.
Singh Saab The Great tells the story of a messiah who believes in "Change" rather than "Revenge" as he suffers a setback after losing his wife in a good verses evil battle.
From the director cult Gadar, Anil Sharma brings back the action- melodrama of 90's into the current scenario. Though the theme of the subject is well-intentioned , it is direction and screenplay which takes a backseat. The first half of the film literally does not have any impactful scenes except for the interaction between Sunny Deol and Prakash Raj. It is the second half which makes the film interesting and whole pictures heaves a sigh of relief. Art direction and cinematography are good. Action scenes are over-rated. Not sure why Hindi films displays people flying in the air with a single punch. Music is terrible. It is Sunny Deol who saves the film from falling into pit. He emotes, punches and delivers exceptionally well. Amrita Rao and Prakash Raj are passable.
If you are big fan of Sunny Deol, you will enjoy it otherwise it is a plain average film. Decent 2.75/5

Anil Sharma reunites with Sunny Deol once again after a hiatus with 'Singh Saab the Great'. And luckily, Sunny is in good from & the film is pretty entertaining. It doesn't disappoint!
'Singh Saab the Great' Synopsis: A TV journalist uncovers a mysterious hero's back story, who once worked as a tax collector, before being imprisoned for 6 years.
'Singh Saab the Great' is predictable & clichéd, but entertaining nevertheless. The narrative is arresting & the raw action-sequences are effective. Shaktimaan's Screenplay is been-there-seen-that, but fiery dialogue & some well-written sequences, make it work. Anil Sharma's Direction is skilled. Cinematography is grand. Editing is fair. Music by Sonu Nigam & Anand Raj Anand, is passable.
Performance-Wise: Sunny shines in the central role. He's still got the intensity & the energy he's known for. Urvashi Rautela is decent. Amrita Rao is impressive. Prakash Raj makes for a worthy nemesis. He's absolutely loathsome. Anjali Abrol is credible. Johny Lever & Sanjay Mishra are funny. Yashpal Sharma & Manoj Pahwa are good.
On the whole, 'Singh Saab the Great' is entertaining.

It was only last week that I saw Prakash Raj as a villain in Rajjo and herein he does the same sort of character. Now we have a new character word: THE PRAKASH RAJ CHARACTER! And when it is overdone by he himself, then blast!
Damini had one of the most memorable scenes of court dates and the makers don't restrain from using the idea a couple of times. Nor do they refrain from setting the whole plot up as a shiny parade of songs, slow- mos & stunt scenes out of revenge.
It is not about the villain anymore. But using the same old corruption cleaning good-guy figure as the main stronghold just doesn't work. Sunny Deol is fine, all right. But his character and family is what troubles me. Starting a people's revolution against the tyranny? Well, that only works in fiction. And if you are to succeed, bring logical reasoning in.
But SSTG all just bases on the cliché. Even the side characters are borrowed from other films. Johnny Lever should just stop. Amrita Rao did fine. Also, adding an emotional quotient and then using it as a conclusive weapon just is the most overrated/overused/ludicrous tactic in Bollywood cinema today.
The dialogs are too gaudy & flashy that may keep a niche audience entertained.
BOTTOM LINE: With a necessary item song, this film is just like any other heroism flick, which is watchable but recommended to skip!
Can be watched with a typical Indian family? YES

People may think its not a new concept, Sunny is again looking for revenge. But this movies has everything - mas ala, emotions, great acting and dialogue delivery. Some people also comparing this movie with Dabangg and its sequel but its way better than both. This movie has a message, great direction and acting. Movie is original with original work by real actors and director. If Sunny cannot fight with twenty people at a time, then no actor can do that. Sunny brought many awesome movies and never did big campaigns to launch his movies. But now a days who ever can get more publicity on face book or you tube those actors think that they are better than these legends. I must say Sunny is back which we were missing from many years. All the very best team!!

In recent years we have seen Sunny Deol in films which haven't been suited for his acting. In the last 5 years he has made films like Fox, Right Yaa Wrong, Yamla Pagla Deewana and Yamla Pagla Deewana 2, and in my opinion the only one really worth watching was YPD, but it wasn't a role in which Sunny Deol excels in. In Singh Saab, we see Sunny Deol in a role reminiscent of his 90's roles. It's full of Sunny Deol style roaring and shouting on top of what I call Sunny Deol action (People flying away with one punch, ripping out posts from the ground) which has in recent years been adapted by all the other actors but we now see Sunny Deol showing them how it's done. A return to real action for Sunny Deol.
With a good storyline and great acting this is must see, not just for Sunny Deol fans but also regular cinema goers.
With a good storyline and great acting this is must see, not just for Sunny Deol fans but also regular cinema goers.
Though SSTG did show a great promise in its promos offering something unique and powerful, it sadly fails to give you the same in its 150 minutes of content and turns out to be just a routine revenge saga depicted with the loud roar and nothing else. Beginning with a very lengthy introduction of Singh Saab along with a great title song, it goes on following a typical 80s progression of a loud action packed emotional drama with an overdose of songs, entirely depending upon the second half coming up with some explosive scenes.
But then the second half also doesn't live up to the expectations raised, with not many impressive dialogues and completely predictable sequences offering nothing other than the routine. Yes, the film has its few pulsating moments, fine emotions and the good old Sunny Deol back in his most loved action avatar too as the smartly dressed turbaned Sikh. Moreover, his 'Dhai Kilo Ka Haath' has now turned into a "Saade Teen Kilo Ka Haath" eventually. And he again proves to be the only believable hero making all those terrifying roars and hitting solid punches to the rivals throwing them at a good distance like stones. Yet the engaging energy & thrill is somehow missing, as we have already seen enough of this revengeful stuff, in many different versions repeatedly in the last few decades. Particularly it is now becoming too boring and tiring to see Prakash Raj doing the same old things in every second film in front of the big hero without any fresh vision.
To say it bluntly, even the south films repeatedly made around the similar confrontation drama, add much more to their scripts in order to engage the viewers in an entertaining manner. But here one doesn't find anything exceptional in its entire 150 minutes in terms of interesting entertainment and even veterans like Johny Lever, Sanjay Mishra and Manoj Pahwa remain wasted with Johny Bhai also going over the top in few of his opening scenes.
Being completely focused on Singh Saab alone, the film has Sunny Deol looking impressive in his different get-ups and the action hero fits to his given character like a 'T' very convincingly. However the writers have not defined his value system properly by adding a few silly insertions, like the scene wherein Sunny leaves a boy easily (rather lovingly), who was just going to throw acid on a girl's face. And later when the "People's Man" doesn't find anything objectionable to dance with an item girl in the rival's den, picking her up in his arms, singing a song with the lyrics, "Khaike Palang Torh Paan". No doubt, the masses are sure going to ignore these minor hiccups as they love seeing their favourite actor hitting the goons like a super-human with a huge roar of a lion. But honestly I strongly felt that with the social issues angle incorporated well, the character of Singh Saab could have shaped much better than the existing one, with a much careful and effective writing.
In the supporting cast Amrita Rao is just OK but her added accent does become annoying at times after the initial scenes. Urvashi Rautela looks good at screen but gets nothing much to in the film as per the role given. Prakash Raj, as said before has simply lost the novelty playing the identical kind of roles again and again. Anjali Abrol plays it fine and so does Rajit Kapoor in his few scenes.
Musically the film has a well written, brilliantly composed and superbly sung title track "Singh Saab The Great" by Sonu Nigam and few other above average tracks too based on Punjabi folk music. But 'more than required' use of songs in the background (in a repetitive mode) actually spoils the mood of the film to a large extent and they could have easily done without it in order to make it more sharp and effective. The track "Daaru Band Kal Se" also has a surprise entry of both Dharmendra and Bobby Deol which again is sure to please the die-hard fans of Deol family a lot. Cinematography works well along with the action director, but background score does tend to become loud and a lot musical too unnecessarily.
In all, SSTG is a typical action packed revenge drama, made on the lines of what Dharmendra used to do in the 80s like PAAP KO JALAAKAR RAAKH KAR DOONGA & many more. The film could have reached another level, exploiting the 'social-reform' angle a lot more, taking SINGH SAAB out of a fixed region dealing with more than one evil man as it seems.
Still, in its present version, it thankfully ends on a positive note and is sure going to find more takers in the north and single screens, in comparison to all the other centers. Besides, any long time Sunny Deol fan is obviously going to watch it irrespective of any kind of review or star ratings.

This is an action flick through and through, but it gets old watching nothing but anger and fighting every 5 minutes through the whole movie. Sunny Deol and Prakash Raj play their parts well a contrasting good and evil, but that is lost when it's played out over and over. The three leading ladies basically over act killing any hope of at least adding some interesting parts. They just seem to have been added for eye candy. Johnny Lever's and Sanjay Mishra's characters are out of whack and I wasn't sure why there were even in the movie unless someone thought that would be the comical part (they are not most of the time). The music is decent and the dance scenes are good, but they fail to revive the boredom. There is an underlying message, but it seems like it took 2 hrs and 20 minutes to get to it in the end. If all you want is impossible action scenes of super human feats, then maybe it's worth a watch, but if you want an action flick with substance and decent story that helps move things along, then this one will not do.
Singh Saab is a really great movie. must must watch for everyone. Its much better than ram-Leela, Chennai express type of movies... that teach you nothing... this is a movie from which everybody will actually learn... I like the ending very much... villain is not killed but changed to good human values... i would greatly recommend this movie... learn from this movie... every hero tries to show his prowess with powerful action scenes... this is not what this movie teaches... this movie teaches badlav... which make more sense than badla... really a treat to watch this movie.. all khans are a failure in front of sunny ... u will see a simple sunny with great message... simple living high thinking type
Movie has a good first half where we get to see the basic premise of the movie as well as to get to know the characters of the movie. The first half was much better than the second half of the movie.
Pros :- Sunny Deol's performance, Some good dialogs, Good Messages throughout movie.
Cons :- Comedy of Johnny Lever & Sanjay Mishra falls flat., Avg. songs, Loose second half.
If you like Sunny Deol's movies you will not be disappointed. The movie could have been better with better direction especially in the second half of the movie. The comedy scenes were misplaced, action scenes were good but i prefer raw style of Sunny Deol (Damini, Ghayal & Ghatak type) instead of these crap wire action sequences. A good movie with good messages throughout but with same old formula. It is like an old wine in a new bottle.

I don't have words....he is looking awesome in the movie....
After Ghayal & Gadar...this is the movie we all r waiting for....
Best action Scene as for me:
Stopped the running Ford Endeavour SUV by his single hand while saving a life of a child....
Go For : 1.Best Action movie by Sunny Deol till date. 2.Very Good End ...a Positive end... 3.Beautiful track songs...specially the main track " singh saab the great" by sonu nigam.

I just can't believe that i spend my precious 2nhalf hours on this stupid movie. Let be clear I have nothing against Sikh and Singh but if u gonna show their strength and greatness then show in a right way.
I u gonna make him walk on the water and fly in the air then up yours i don't like it and accept it. He just can kill 100s of people by hand and can't spin the cars around and etc.
The only reason in completed the movie because i wanted to be maximum angry and write the bad review so again Sigh saab the great is the worst movie i have ever seen. I want to see sunny deol in movies like ghatak and jeet etc with acceptable and reasonable story line and direction but this one was blew out of the water. shame shame shame shame shame shame 1/10.

I always like Sunny Deol movies no matter what the box office performance is, but this one is an exception. This is utterly disgusting and stupid. Worthless action twists, stale storyline. The character is totally stupid and irritating in most part of the film. The movie is not even funny, but absurd. Rest everyone of the actors performed good. Songs are ridiculous, not even a single song is worthy of listening. I would not recommend wasting your time on this movie and watch something else. I watched this on Video on Demand and it was a total waste. Looks like I will have to stop expecting good movies from Sunny Deol.

Singh Saab to me was a very decent Sunny Paaji flick that had all the right elements that a typical Bollywood movie must have and not to forget the superb direction by Anil Sharma as he showed some nice stuff by traveling through flashbacks. Sunny comebacks with Singh Saab in his old "desi superman avatar", he hits, he cries, and tries the right things. You may notice a lot of familiar faces that constitute the supporting cast but Urvashi as Minnie was a charm to watch. There are a lot of good dialogs in the movie and a couple of good songs too. The movie raises the same old issues that India still faces but in a bit different manner. Overall it can be your great family weekend. Enjoy! Rating - 8 on 10.

About story: Nothing new in this film, same old villain, same old mistakes from the hero and revenge. I already read several reviews in IMDb and other sites about the wastefulness of seeing this movie, but I too thought, like you may be thinking now, that this reviewer may not be telling the pure truth, may be he didn't like Sunny,,,,etc. After the first 30 minutes anyone could easily guess the story, I too did and at no place I was wrong.
Casting: Urvashi Rautela is looking pretty and glamorous. Sunny has maintained good physique and his acting is also solid. Amrita Rao's introductory parts look weird from acting angle.Prakash Raj did very good from his part as always. Johnny Lever is not finding great like in his beginning periods.
This is my first review, please forgive my ignorance if I hurt anybody or if anywhere I went wrong.
My rating is 3/10

This is one of the best movies ever made Regarding Mumbai Politics. Anil Sharma does it again. Sunny Deol dialogues are the best as usual. And I believe he should deserve an Award. The problem is that lot of people in Mumbai, won't understand Punjabi and Most of the words are in Punjabi. Urvashi has acted really well. Words said by each actor is true to their character. Songs are not 100% the best but still I believe this year's best Actor award should go to Sunny Paaji. But It"s gonna be a tight fight between Singh Saab, Krissh 3, up coming Dhoom 3 and Chennai Express. I would highly encourage everyone to watch this film and decide it for yourself. This movie is truly against Racism......God bless.

Average movie with Sunny effect.
Story-Commercial social drama.
Dialogues-do not fit for Sunny Deol (expected better for him).
Casting-Good but failed to utilize properly.
Direction-Average
Music-Good
Acting-Individual actors have acted well but Johnny Lever pulling extra lever (as usual) makes movie very loud so much so that movie needs his editing .
Comedy-leave johnny but Sanjay Mishra and other actors are better than lever.
Cinematography-Good
editing-could have been better
The story is simple. The movie deviates from the subject most of the time and emphasizes more on romance, flashback, forced comedy & emotion and nonsense trap.Action sequences are Sunny specific(dhai kilo ke hath me abhi bhi bahut jaan hai).Press reporting by Amrita Rao is too unprofessional.Antagonist is good but only to match Sunny Deol we miss Amrish Puri. The eastern Uttar Pradesh accent seems to be superimposed on various actors.
Overall good movie can be watched once.

Singh Saab the great brings back Anil Sharma -Sunny Deol combo after a long hiatus. This is Sunny's real full fledged action film after the 2003 film THE HERO:Love story of a spy.
Recently there have been a spate of Dabangg clones and remakes of southern action films. Singh Saab is in a similar mold but has more emotional punch to it with memorable dialogues and more believable stunts due to Sunny Deol.
The film tells the story of a honest collector played by action king Sunny Deol. The story is simple with some twists thrown in to make it stand out from the usual stuff.
Sunny Deol's entry in the film is something to watch out for. It is a very well shot and memorable sequence. The only comparable introduction scene that comes to mind is Sunny's entry in GHATAK.
Sunny Deol personifies real action. When he hits, you know that baddies will stay hit. The punches and stunts he delivers look believable despite the special effects put into them. The dialogues are top grade and I saw many people clapping and whistling spontaneously.
Sunny's acting is very good and he makes the proceedings entirely believable. After the dud Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 he is in top form again. The new heroine Urvashi Rautela is pleasant and provides ample eye candy. Amrita Rao was good but her character is not well developed. Prakash Raj has now become the resident villain of most Bollywood action films. He can't match a Balwant Rai(Amrish Puri of Ghayal) or Katya( Danny of Ghatak) but provides a decent challenge to Sunny. Some of their one-on-one scenes have come out real good.Rest of the star cast including the great Johnny Lever don't get much scope. Also it's pleasant to watch Byomkesh Bakshi (Rajat Kapoor) on the big screen.
The songs feel good when you watch it with the film. The title track is a standout with Sonu Nigam's voice providing tremendous depth and range to the soundtrack.
In the writing department Shaktimaan seems to have borrowed some stuff from GHATAK. The story could have done with more depth and twists. On the whole it is OK.
Anil Sharma has done a good job in the direction department. However at 2hr and 30 min the film is a tad long and could have done without couple of songs and more trimming.
Overall it is lot better then most films Bollywood produces and takes us back to the time when action reigned supreme. Sunny Deol rocks in this one!!!

Sunny Deol has always been my favorite actor when it comes to action. I don't think there is any other actor in Bollywood who can execute action sequences with as much intensity as Sunny does it and whatever action he does he pulls it off so convincingly that you don't have even fraction of doubt about it.
Unfortunately his last couple of movies hadn't been successful, probably because taste of audiences changed in last couple of years specially in metros (though on single screens people still die to watch his actions).
I genuinely feel Sunny is one of the most underutilized actors in Bollywood and whenever directors like Santoshi,Anil Sharma or JD dutta utilized him fullest he has come up with performances which can be matched bu none. none means none. I can't recall a single confrontation scene in any other actor's movies which has so much intensity as it has in Ghatak when Sunny says "Utha Utha Patkunga,Utha Utha Patkunga, Halak me hath dal ke Kaleja kheech lunga Haramkhor". I have watched Ghatak so many times but let me tell you I still feel enthralled when I watch this scene in Ghatak. It is the best fight scenes I have ever watched in a movie and I can bet no one else can do it that way.
Coming back to SSTG, I found it entertaining from beginning to end with some very nicely choreographed and done action scenes. My favorite action sequence has been the one just before the lunch where Sunny lifts and throws Prakash Raj in to the fire. Oh my God... I have never seen this kind of scene at least in last 10 years in any movie. And when Sunny does it you don't find it over the top becoz you know he really can do that. It really deserves big clapping and whistles from audiences.
Direction is good which could have been better and screenplay could have been made bit more meaty but Sunny's performance covers it up. Watch it if you like raw and real action. Watch it if you believe that roaring is one of the natural attributes of anger and there is nothing ridicules about it. and last but not the least watch it for the man whose Dhai Kilo ka Hath has become 5 kilo ka hath now.
Giving it 9 out of 10 for one and only Sunny Deol.
