Finally Re-imagined

This is a classic to me, growing up as a 10yr old watching toonami and watching this orginally gave me chills and further developed my love for anime. The first episode is real nostalgic and made me remember when I used to pick up a broomstick and act like a samurai. To see this captured in modern animation is flawless. They played it safe in episode one with some minor changes in story but I'm happy they did. There will hopefully be a new generation of watchers seeing this for the first time and I hope it tells the story wonderfully. I will a major watcher of this show. I cannot wait to see what is coming next! A must watch!

Lost part of the soul

The text is more coherent but very explanatory, almost obvious.

Kenshin is definitely more haughty, in the first episodes he is even a little arrogant, taking away the charm of the super humble wanderer.

Animation slightly updated but without surprising improvements.

But the biggest loss of all is the soundtrack. In addition to the completely dull opening and ending (when the originals were outstanding), you don't hear anything during the anime. No classical Japanese music or instrumentals demarcating the era, and nothing exciting. I don't like the acceleration of events, it also gives in to a generation Z culture, taking away the charm of shifting time and space to a historical era. It lacks the soul of the Japanese flute, the cuts of peaceful scenery and water fountains.

Another loss is the voices, especially for Brazil. It's not too bad because Kenshin hasn't changed that much but he's very youthful. Sano's voice was iconic. For now we await greater cohesion in the main arc of Kyoto hell, and the animated sequel to the manga. Maybe the remake of Seiso-hen.

The eternal comparison: it's not on par with the 96 version, either in terms of epic moments or soundtrack.

Just wait...

Consider Full Metal Alchemist. The first anime adaptation was pretty good. Then after it ended, they came out with Brotherhood a few years later, and I think a lot of people were questioning why a remake was necessary, especially since the first few episodes seemed a bit too rushed in comparison to the original adaptation. But by the time you get to the point where the original adaptation diverged from the manga, hardly anyway says they prefer the original anime to Brotherhood.

I'm predicting it will be the same case with this new adaptation of Rurouni Kenshin. The original 90's anime was very good, especially for its time, and I can see why a lot of people are still preferring it to this remake. But unfortunately, after the Kyoto arc, it ran out of manga material to adapt, and the quality of the anime storyline really took a nosedive as it divulged completely into filler content. Plus, the final Enishi arc from the manga is arguably the best part of the whole story, so the fact that we never got to see this represented through the anime, and live out the true conclusion of Rurouni Kenshin is a tragedy. I'm really hoping this new adaptation will be able to produce the entire manga storyline.

For now, with the earlier parts of the story, it's hard to see much of an improvement. The animation is really very beautiful, but not a great deal better than the original which was kind of ahead of its time. Fight scenes are good but not necessarily as detailed or as exciting as the original ones. The focus seems to be more on sword slashes and light streaks than actual footwork and movement. I'm hoping this will improve as the story goes on. Characterizations are much better though, which I think is currently this anime's biggest strength. They made some weird choices with the original anime and while the filler episodes weren't completely terrible, they disrupted the flow of the story and kind of messed up the motivations and actions of the different characters. Karou in particular and Yahiko are much more accurate and likeable in this version I think.

The Jin-e arc was really the stand out moment so far. The final fight scene where we see Kenshin revert to his Battousai persona was chilling. Very good acting and animation there. The differences between Rurouni and Battousai were much more apparent in this adaptation I think. I remember feeling like Battousai in the 90's anime was just an angrier version of the regular Kenshin. This Battousai seems like a completely different character though.

I was also pleased that they did the Raijuta and Yutaro arc closer to manga cannon this time. The changes they made in the original were a bit bizarre and pointless. I'm also glad to see they didn't cut Maekawa and his dojo this time around.

I'm really excited to see where the rest of the story goes. I think a lot will be riding on the fight with Saito, since I know that's a favorite moment from the original anime. As long as they don't screw that part up and give the moment the gravitas it deserves, I think this adaptation will be golden.

Love Love Love

True to the manga...almost perfect except for the opening theme!!! Why oh why?! Hope they will not get the same artist or same genre for the op. Song in the next seasons.

And... crossing my fingers that the animation will be consistent all throughout.

Still is my favorite anime, made me very happy since it's been a while since I enjoyed one, glad they made a reboot and I'm looking forward to the Shishio and Enishi arcs.

Kenshin is love love love! Yaasssssss! This is how happy I am. Hahaha. Hope it will be appreciated by the generation today...where most animes are isekai related... it's time for a break.

Kenshin is back!

This is a fantastic looking new appearance of an old friend. The updated graphics are incredible and I love how faithfully that are sticking to the story. I can't wait to see each and every episode. And I am ecstatic that Kenshin is available to this new generation. I hope they will love him and his story as much as I do. I'm super excited to see the new animation take on some of the more fantastic fights and storylines! I'm so glad Kenshin and the gang is back!!

It definitely kinda sucks that they're releasing one week at a time, but it also gives me something to look forward to, so I can't complain too much!

Tears were coming out of my eyes

Rurouni Kenshin, or Samurai X, is one of my favorite fictional stories, not just anime/manga. The anime of the nineties totally marked my generation, it is an epic with a very deep message, historical accuracy and great action.

This remake, based on the first episode, left me with very good impressions. Everything seems to indicate that it will be a completely faithful version of the original story, which is to be appreciated since said story is perfect. The animation and voice acting in general are very well done.

There is only one negative detail that I want to comment on, to my personal taste, the opening theme is horrible! It doesn't match anything with the style of the anime, it's a shame because the openings of the classic anime were very good. I was about to lower a note of the score for that, but the truth is a rather minor detail.

I'm glad that the new generations can now enjoy and learn from Kenshin Himura's philosophy, let's hope that everything continues on the right track and that they at least end up adapting all the content of the manga.

Kenshin is peak shonen.

As a manga reader, I love shonen and watching anime. This series was the beginning of my manga reading journey, and as a long-term manga reader, the first time experience is the best but in the long-term you will have a sense and taste of artwork that will be provided to you throughout different mangas for me "Rurouni kenshin" stood out, it had it all, mind blowing paneling, the artwork and dialog was satisfying to look at and read through with these amazing fights with really badass characters with amazing motivation that delivers with a great moments in finding out more about the characters and having them engage in moments of life and death are beautiful that I say. Overall, I love the anime so much with its style and all. It's obviously different from the 90s work because we're in the future now, and it's not the 90s anymore. I hope it keeps going until we have a complete kenshin series from beginning to end. Keep up the excellent work.

Good, but terrible compared to the 96-98 version

This review is comparing apples to apples truly. The original was a delicious Fuji Apple, and this is just crab apple.

As stated it's still good but awful compared to its original. It's missing the amazing music that added so much to the original. The voice acting isn't as good, and the art work isn't as good. The opening song is garbage compared to the originals. Some characters are missing, there are missing episodes from the original arcs. If you have never seen the original I'm certain you will like it. If you have seen the original don't bother watching it.

Save yourself some time and go watch the original.

Excellent!!!

I can't believe I'm re living my childhood memories. Samurai X was/is my first anime and I never liked any other. I searched the internet in 2009 so that I can complete it and I have kept it since then. Even passed it down to my nephews and they so much loved it. I so much loved it that I still remember the names of all his fighting techniques. I welcome the idea of a slight but not too much changes in the old storyline. The animation is excellent and not to talk of the action is smooth. This is a must watch for me and my nephews.

Wish the could reuse the old songs but I don't care as long as it is Battossai 😂😂😂

Great re-imagining, but..

The voices are all wrong. Otherwise, it's great. The newer production detail really shows, and feels fresh.

However, it was very disappointing when characters talk. It simultaneously saddens and annoys me, and that's why I have it a 7/10. It would be an 8 or 9 if I got further into the story. If the characters were at least relative to the originals, it wouldn't take me out of the immersion. Meanwhile, all of the original English cast are all alive and very active in the voice acting industry to this day, so it's confusing why they chose to replace the entire cast.

The situation feels quite similar to how Attack on Titan made me feel. When AoT was made by the original studio literally the entire production, and then switched studios for the final season. Suddenly, the art style changed quite aggressively, and I was confused most of the time because I had no idea which characters were on-screen anymore until the characters used each other's names. The way I feel is if I went blind, I would have no idea who I'm listening to on the new Kenshin.

Most people seem to love it for the nostalgia, but the story doesn't feel the same without the powerful actors behind the characters.

Painful

I tried going in with an open mind into this but having very recently watched the original one (for the first time) I couldn't help but compare. I have not read the manga.

It was actually very disturbing for me to watch this - the art is horrible, faces have been animated quite badly (compare, for example, Kaoru-dono's face) and most seriously, the BGM is crappy. Above all, the soul and feel of the OG is missing in the remake - believe me when I say that it was the soul and feel of the OG that made it such a great anime.

For some reason, a couple of story points may have been explained better here, hence I didn't rate it 1/10. They took away the magic and old-world/classic charm of Kenshin - for that I do not forgive them.

To be fair, I'll watch a few more episodes and if something improves I'll update here but until then, curses be upon the creators of this abomination.

Update after Edit 2 : the story seems more fleshed out in this version and a couple of points that are never addressed in the original version are discussed too - hence, upgrading the rating to 3/10.

Loving this so far

The original anime adaptation was great, it's the first adaptation of Kenshin that I fell in love with. Then, I watched the movies with Satoh Takeru were awesome. Satoh will Always be the best live action Kenshin and Battousai. I was itching and hoping for a newer version anime for Kenshin. I haven't read the manga, but I understand they strayed pretty far from the source material in the 1996 series. Im hoping with this new version, they'll stay true to Kenshin's story and have more of a balance of characters. Im on episode 11, and so far there's more chemistry between Kenshin and Kaoru, Kenshin and Sano and all together the bond between all of them as friends. The Jin-e arch was amazing in this version, gave me chills seeing him revert to Battousai. Which, I think the actor they chose for the sub version does an incredible job as Kenshin and Battousai. Overall, I think this is a worthy, and very very good remake.

Rurouni Kenshin

Rurouni Kenshin is one of best my fafourite anime tv serie. Storyline: Ten years have passed since the end of Bakumatsu, an era of war that saw the uprising of citizens against the Tokugawa shogunate. The revolutionaries wanted to create a time of peace, and a thriving country free from oppression. The new age of Meiji has come, but peace has not yet been achieved. Swords are banned but people are still murdered in the streets. Orphans of war veterans are left with nowhere to go, while the government seems content to just line their pockets with money.

Like this anime RK anime a lot. It so far is looking better than the original, and I hope that continues from start to end. I'm obviously hoping for no fillers. Aside from the first episode, the other three seem to combine two Chapters of the manga into one episode. Also, this new anime seems to be following the manga more closely. Instead of giving that one goon the Bobby Hill treatment (i.e. "That's my purse! I don't know you!") Yahiko instead bites his third leg.

Can't beat the original but damn close!

Title: A Modern Take That Slowly Wins You Over

As a longtime fan of the original Rurouni Kenshin anime, I was skeptical about this new adaptation. The 90s series had an iconic charm-its voice acting was top-tier, and the fight music brought an intensity that made every battle feel like a legendary showdown. In comparison, the 2023 version initially felt like it lacked that raw energy.

However, as the episodes progressed, especially moving into the second season, the show really started to pick up. The animation is crisp and fluid, bringing Kenshin's fights to life in a way that modern animation allows. While the voice acting doesn't quite match the emotional weight of the original, the new cast grows on you, and the story remains faithful to the spirit of Nobuhiro Watsuki's manga.

The second season, in particular, has been a standout, capturing the heart of what made Rurouni Kenshin so special. The pacing, the action sequences, and the way the characters are developed all feel more refined. It might not surpass the nostalgia of the classic series, but this rendition is definitely carving out its own space. If you're a fan of the original, it's worth giving this one a chance-by season two, you just might find yourself fully invested.

This is how you make a decent and current reboot

My dad always said, "Oh, Kenshin, Kenshin is awesome," and stuff like that. But I never had the patience to watch the old series. But I saw that this remake was released by an unknown studio, Liden Films, and I decided to watch it. I'm not kidding when I say I almost had a breakdown when I saw how good the anime is. Great animation, one of the best openings I've ever seen (the second one almost made me have another breakdown because the music was so addictive), good script... Did I mention the animation? Anyway, everything in this anime gives me enormous joy, especially the fights, because the satisfaction of seeing Kenshin beating everyone up is priceless. I would like everyone to watch it without fear, because besides being really good, it's an extremely competent reboot and a great alternative to study Japanese history, because the plot is literally centered on Ancient Japan. Thank you guys at Liden for the masterpiece.

Ruroni Kenshin for the 21st century I guess :/ Reboots are poor copies

What is it with people saying 'I really liked that, I should do it over but I'm going to change this and that and...' ¯\_("-)_/¯ This isn't bad. But it's not Kenshin that we fell in love with. It's the same, but it's different. It's missing that je ne sais quoi. That spark, the humour. Some things it tries, but it's trying too hard- like Kenshin's 'oro?'. The VA for Kenshin Himura was trying to recreate Richard Cansino's soft tones and antique speech patterns but it just doesn't work. It's missing the music. The colors are bright and the art is good, but it's just all wrong if you are a fan of the real Ruroni Kenshin.

IT'S THE SAME KENSHIN WE KNOW AND LOVE!

Rurouni Kenshin is about an ex-assassin who vows never to kill again. Throughout the story, he is haunted by his past as he tries to uphold his vow and still be able to save the people around him.

This series, while still remaining shonen (for teenage boys) with majority of its tropes, can actually be pretty deep at times, and it is very poetic in how it tells its story. Everything has layers of meaning. Characters' names, appearances, and events that take place often have symbolic properties down to the trees in the background.

The most obvious example is how everyone around Kenshin either stands for his redemption or they are foils to him, particularly the villains; this is a lot more apparent in the second arc.

Another thing I really like about this show (and manga) is its depiction of history. It's not rosy-lensed about the new or old ages. It takes place in the 1870's right when Japan was beginning to modernize after the Imperialists defeated the Shogunate. It's basically the same time as "The Last Samurai", dealing with similar things, except it doesn't romanticize one side over another. It shows the good and the bad that the modernization led to. It also shows the reasons it happened in the first place. In short, it shows that corruption led to the civil war, and now the new government is just as corrupt. The ones constantly caught in the middle of it all are the common people, who suffer just the same under the new government. It can be surprisingly smart at times given how "cool", action-oriented, and comedic it is.

Comparison to the old series:

The action animation is much more fluid as should be expected. The colors are more vibrant. And the natural scenery is beautifully animated with digital effects only a modern anime can offer.

I think the music is pretty good. There are no themes I really object to. The old series will always have an iconic score, however. Personally, a lot of the music in the old show felt dated (90's) and out of place in an historical setting. The new show does not make the music sound any more authentic, but it distracted me less. With that said, the old show still had some really good music, which I admit was more memorable, but that should not discount the new score.

The style of the new show is certainly more mainstream. The directors did not choose to make the show feel radically different from everything else, which I do not mind at all. Whatever one can say about the old show, it had a very unique style. The choice of tilted angles, random color changes, bright flashes and their abilities being displayed in writing when the characters are in combat was both unique and fun to watch. Certain choices, however, I found to be odd and distracting, such as x-ray colors. So, with that said, I do not mind the more generic mainstream feel, but I do wish they were a little more creative, and they are difinitely getting there. The Kyoto arc so far has had some really cool creative visual choices.

The new show follows the source material much closer, which is almost always a possitive. There is no filler and the scenes take direct panels and put them to screen. Because the manga was not always that detailed and tended to make every conversation a simple back-and-forth of faces, though, the new show suffers a little bit from lack of unique angles; many shots are basic, but I do not think it is bad. That said, I like how the new show does not add filler and tries to be more faithful; we just have a less creative, less ambitious retelling of the original manga, and that is fine with me. It is better to be faithful and do a great job than to be less faithful and hope it works. For me, the old show felt like half the time the creative choices did not work at all, while the other half went above and beyond anything I could have hoped for.

The biggest advantage the new show has over the old one, which strongly justifies its production, is that the studio plans to adapt the ENTIRE story, not just the first two arcs. Yes, yes, the manga was not complete when the old show was airing, but still, even after the last arcs were written, I wonder why they didn't try to adapt them. There were several OVA's that adapted parts like Trust and Betrayal and Reflection, but they weren't continuations.

In conclusion, this new adaptation of the beloved manga faithfully honors the source material and even if you were not a fan of the original show, you would still probably really enjoy this show. I personally think it's better than the original in most ways (e.g. Lack of filler) and it's not hard at all to keep up with. I am not in any way downplaying the significance or greatness of the old show. I think it's really good, but it has its flaws as does this new one. If you were a fan of the old show, I still highly recommend this one because it still tells the story we all love; moreover, it will tell the WHOLE story.

Not AS good as the original...but good.

When I found this remake of Rurouni Kenshin, I groaned. How often have we seen these sorts of projects ruin classic stories?

I was pleasantly surprised that this is not just watchable, but actually quite good. In SOME ways, even better than the original...though also worse in others. If you want to experience this story, I would still suggest the original.

Generally speaking, the tone, message, characterization, and plot all seem mostly intact. Only the first season has been done, so the Shishio arc that was the definitive season of the original is not part of my assessment but from what I've seen so far, I've every confidence that it will be done competently.

Probably the most noticeable upgrade is the quality of the artwork. There's a depth and quality to it that wasn't there in the original which was very flat compared to this. However, while the individual drawings are better here, I'd actually argue that the animation and movement were better in the original. They did a better job conveying the movements and speed, and making these superhuman moves almost seem logical and reasonable. This adaptation often shortchanges the action sequences.

The script changes are noticeable. Most of the changes are inocuous, and some are actually beneficial. Though I did resent a few. I think the poster child for one I like was the change made to the Raijuta character. It was a change that 'fit' the show's theme better than the original. But in the same arc, I felt the Yutaro character really suffered much weaker character development.

I think the show generally feels less like a period piece than the original. Which is strange because the setting design is almost identical, but it felt more modern. It's hard to explain why. The show also included a narrator who interjects historical (and show lore) factoids at times rather than having a character conveniently explain it to the audience through dialogue. I've mixed feelings about that. Sometimes I feel like it works, sometimes it feels intrusive.

The thing that I think most universally disappointed was the english dub. OG Kenshin had two dubs. One, the one on the DVD set, was amazing and perfect. The second, which showed up in a Hulu streaming offering, was one of the worst dubs I've ever heard. The remake's dub lies somewhere between those extremes, but falls far short of the one I like.

There are a few problems with it. First of all, the voice acting feel far to sedate. There's not nearly as much passion in people's voices. Especially Kenshin. Kenshin is typically very calm, that's his schtick, but when incensed, he needs to project more intensity than this one does. But then, I think that's true of almost every character.

What's worse...far too many characters sound undistinctive. All anime repeat voices at times, but your main and recurring characters should be distinctive enough that a fan can identify them with their eyes shut. You can't do that with this remake. There are at most a couple voices that are distinct, and typically not in a good way.

Sanosuke Sagara in particular is like fingernails on a chalkboard. He seems to have a thick NY accent that drifts in and out. I half expected him to say "Fuggedaboudit, Kenshin!". His tone seldom matches the situation. I like nothing about him.

One last complaint - the intro/outro sequences. Look, these are time padders. Complete wastes of the audience's time. I'd really like to see anime cut these out entirely, but I get it, it saves money. But the OG show had excellent music. This one...not so much.

Like I said, if you haven't seen the show, watch the original. First two seasons and then Samurai X. Don't watch season three, it's 'war crime' level awful. We'll see if maybe this corrects that. But if you watch this, you're getting the basic gist of Rurouni Kenshin. It's better than adequate.

Rurouni Kenshin Remake amazing

Rurouni Kenshin 2023 reboot is amazing Reboot I do have critiques with some of the choices. But for me I'm not too picky on that small changes Which is completely unlike the original that changed a lot of the main plot And characters development.

They didn't know what they wanted to do with the Old Anime when the got a head of the manga series and they started making up Weird story plots and lines Like sorcerers and wizards Other supernatural paranormal storyplot lines when when it was a historical romance

Two it be I hope we will get a A completed anime up until less chapters of the Jinchu arc.

So far, not so good but...

Rurouni Kenshin (2023) has now two seasons with 2 cours each and what started strong is about to fall apart with the finale of the 2nd season in 2025. Or not?

With the unspoken truth about that legal issue we all know about, the series suffered way too much by having almost no publicity during the entire 2023 run and yet it survived since it is a good product. By all means, it is.

However, the original series added lots of filler because the manga wasn't finished during the making of the anime. This shouldn't be the case here but it is, extra content has been added to the main plot of the series and even to the extreme of changing important events for the sake of filling. What for?

Anyhow. Ruroken needs it's fandom, and hoping the entire manga gets adapted this time around, it is impossible to deny that the remake has lots of potential and can do things the right way.

Whether the 2023 version is superior to the original

The 2019 assignment was to adapt Mugen no Juunin, a renowned manga from the early 1990s by Hiroaki Samura, for Liden Films. The initial anime adaptation was a terrible 2008 version of Bee Train, which was re-adapted in 2019 for Amazon Prime. The outcome was unsatisfactory, featuring a hurried pace, subpar animation, and low production quality. Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan by Nobuhiro Watsuki was recreated by Liden Films four years later. The original work was published in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump from 1994 to 1999. Whether the 2023 version is superior to the original or not is a contentious question when comparing it to the 90s version.

Amazing Anime Series!

Rurouni Kenshin is a timeless masterpiece that blends heart-pounding action, rich character development, and a beautifully crafted story. Set in the Meiji era, it follows Kenshin Himura, a former assassin turned wandering swordsman, who vows never to kill again. The series shines with its compelling exploration of redemption, honor, and peace, brought to life by Nobuhiro Watsuki's intricate writing and stunning artwork. Kenshin's gentle demeanor paired with his fierce battousai past creates a captivating duality, while the vibrant supporting cast-like the fiery Kaoru and loyal Sanosuke-adds depth and humor. The anime's fluid animation and iconic soundtrack elevate every duel and emotional beat. It's a rare gem that balances historical context with universal themes, making it a must-watch for any fan of anime or storytelling done right.
