The film is inspired by a very controversial experiment that took place in Sweden in 1948. The reason behind it was the severely declining dental health. Due to this, a project funded by the state was put in place with the purpose to examine the connection between a carbohydrate intake and caries. During the run of the experiment 660 persons with disabilities were fed high doses of sugar. The result of the study showed a correlation and Sweden was known worldwide for proving this. However, the study was conducted against all guidelines regarding existing research ethics of that time. Guidelines that were established during the Nürnberg trials after WW2.

Based on a true story about a Swedish dental health care experiment, Vipeholmsexperimenten. The experiment was conducted against all guidelines regarding research ethics that were established after the second World War.

The patients depicted in the film were all played by actors and extras who have different disabilities themselves.

During the course of the experiment, 3000 teeth had to be treated and 2000 teeth was extracted. And a total of 600 individuals partook in the experiment.
