Tough and sassy Ava Coleman was put through the wringer in Season 4 of Abbott Elementary, but Janelle James can look back at her onscreen persona and confidently say, “They kind of threw everything at me this season and I feel like I delivered.” And then some!
On the positive side, Ava may have fought it at first, but she eventually eased into a mature romance with chill It guy O'Shon (Matthew Law), a relationship that helped balance out the bigger story arcs that were the opposite of happy. First, Ava reluctantly faced her estranged father Frank (Keith David), and then took a major career punch when she was fired as principal of Abbott for accepting bribes in the form of new computers for the budget-challenged elementary school. "I'm just honored that the writers trust me with the material that they've been giving me," James says.

Mac, Dennis, Charlie, Dee and Frank had no business spending an entire week at an elementary school, but there’s no point in making judgments once the trash is out of the bag.
On January 8th, Abbott Elementary returned to ABC with its mid-season premiere, a very special, anxiously awaited episode called “Volunteers” that featured the five main characters from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia — well, four, really, Dennis spent most of his time at Willard R. Abbott Elementary School skulking around where the camera crew couldn’t see him. Despite the stark tonal differences between the two hit Philadelphian sitcoms, “Volunteers” was a smashing success, and, when It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17 premieres on July 9th, we’ll get to see what really happened during that chaotic school week from the perspective of “The Deplorable Five,” as Randall Einhorn calls them.

ABC has released their Fall 2025 schedule, and there’s some noteworthy things to point out!
First, there’s no Doctor Odyssey on the schedule. The Ryan Murphy series stars Joshua Jackson, and is one of the only ABC shows that has no renewal or cancellation update at this time.
This year, the series aired on Thursdays, but it looks like the new 9-1-1 spinoff set in Nashville will be taking that spot.
“It’s not currently on our schedule. We’re continuing to have creative conversations with Ryan, and we’ll talk to him about what the next chapter looks like,” Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich told THR. “Ryan’s really busy, but we’ll continue to talk.”
In addition, ABC confirmed that Will Trent and The Rookie will both, once again, debut in the midseason. High Potential, ABC’s other big show, will remain on Tuesday nights in the fall.

The second season of “The Golden Bachelor” and new spinoff series “9-1-1: Nashville” will lead ABC’s 2025-26 schedule.
The second installment of “The Golden Bachelor,” which follows NFL alum Mel Owens, will air Wednesdays at 9 p.m., following new episodes of “Shifting Gears” and “Abbott Elementary” this fall. After the reality series, ABC will usher in a new time slot for “Shark Tank,” which moves from its previous Friday spot to air Wednesdays at 10 p.m.
Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich told TheWrap the Wednesday 10 p.m. timeslot has had recent success in the past year but has had several shows cycle through, so they wanted what he calls a “signature show” in the hour. “Shark Tank” is “a show that’s beloved, that the audience knows where to find it, that the audience will seek it out.” Erwich also noted it will offer a strong lead-in for local news at 11 p.

ABC has picked up the drama pilot “Rj Decker,” based on Carl Hiaasen’s 1987 novel “Double Whammy.”
The one-hour pilot hails from writer and executive producer Rob Doherty, with Paul McGuigan attached to direct and executive produce. Hiaasen is also executive producing along with Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman of Timberman/Beverly Productions. 20th Television is the studio.
The official logline for the series states:
“Rj Decker, disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con, starts over as a private investigator in the colorful-if-crime-filled world of South Florida, tackling cases that range from slightly odd to outright bizarre with the help of his journalist ex, her police detective wife, and a shadowy new benefactor, a woman from his past who could be his greatest ally… or his one-way ticket back to prison.”

We have a broadcast pickup — but not the kind one would expect the week before the upfronts. ABC has given a pilot order to Rj Decker, a drama from Elementary creator Rob Doherty based on the 1987 novel Double Whammy by Carl Hiaasen.
While atypical for the traditional broadcast development cycle, the timing is consistent with ABC’s own model, which involves 1-3 spring pilot pickups for midseason consideration. This marks the network’s first pilot greenlight in 2025 so far. As Deadline reported in our Pilot Season 2025 report in March, Rj Decker had been a leading drama contender at ABC.
Paul McGuigan (Will Trent) has come on board to direct the Rj Decker pilot from a script by Doherty. This may be the closest we’ve gotten yet to seeing an apples-to-apples ranker of what TV viewers really are watching these days, regardless of platform. Nielsen is concluding the first season that we have a full list of how entertainment fare is performing on multiple platforms after 35 days — via over-the-air, on demand or streaming.
And here’s the good news for broadcast: People are still watching a lot from the old school medium. Especially on CBS. The network landed six slots on the list of the 20 most-watched series among total viewers across the board: “Tracker,” “Matlock,” “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,” “Ghosts,” “Elsbeth” and “Watson.” ABC is the only other broadcast network in the top 20, with two.
No surprise, Netflix dominates the top 20, with ten shows among the total viewers tally— led by “Squid Game,” which at 27.1 million viewers, towers over everything else.

Danny DeVito put his dignity on the line when he showed up on set for the Abbott Elementary episode featuring the cast of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but, hey, being in the cage was still probably better than being in the couch.

The Abbott Elementary episode, titled “Volunteers,” told the story of a Gang of miscreants who spent a week at Willard R. “31 Candles,” a romantic comedy from “Exmas” director Jonah Feingold, has been acquired by Level 33 Entertainment.
The film will hit theaters in North America later this year. Level 33 will also represent “31 Candles” for international sales at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.
“31 Candles” follows a 30-year-old New Yorker named Leo Kadner (Feingold), who spontaneously plans his long-overdue Bar Mitzvah after running into his former summer camp crush, Eva Shapiro (newcomer Sarah Coffey). Jackie Sandler, Dale Moss (“The Bachelorette”), comedian Jared Freid, Catherine Cohen (“Only Murders In The Building”), Lori Tan Chinn (“A Man on the Inside”), Caroline Aaron (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Larry Owens (“Abbott Elementary”) round out the cast.
“This is all a Bar Mitzvah boy could ever want — a chance to share a personal, funny, Jewish love story with the world,” Feingold said. “I hope audiences support our completely independent film.”
Feingold also wrote and directed “31 Candles,” which is his fifth feature film.

When a professional athlete is the special guest star of a sitcom, it’s almost always a strikeout/fumble/missed shot. Some sports fans might be so charmed by a player’s athletic prowess that they can overlook it, but a swole dude awkwardly waiting for his cue and then reciting a line with a delivery more wooden than a baseball bat is usually unwatchable.
You can find examples of this in almost every long-running sitcom, but these are five of the most egregious…

Sheryl Lee Ralph's Barbara Howard is one of the cornerstones of ABC's hit sitcom Abbott Elementary. However, the veteran actor almost haunted the set of a different sitcom entirely. In a new interview with the Sister Act star, she recounts how she almost became one of the spirits haunting Woodstone Manor on CBS' Ghosts. The near-miss happened when Ralph was starring on the Nina Dobrev sitcom Fam, which was cancelled after a single season. However, two of the Fam creatives, Joe Port and Joe Wiseman, asked her to be on a new series they were developing, Ghosts.
However, the role would have been a supporting one, and at that stage in her career, she wanted a lead role. She turned them down, and the role they had wanted her for, murdered Prohibition-era torch singer Alberta Haynes, went to rising star Danielle Pinnock. Exclusive: Aidan Quinn and Steve Buscemi are working on a movie adaptation of the Sam Shepard play Ages Of The Moon. Quinn and Buscemi are working to get the indie project off the ground and have found their writer and cinematographer with a view to shooting this year.
The two-hander follows a pair of old friends, Byron and Ames. With bourbon in hand, and sitting on the front porch, they chew over decades of friendship and rivalry. Shepard’s play was first staged in 2009 at the Abbey Theatre – the national theater of Ireland. Quinn and Buscemi performed a reading of the play last year in the same venue before doing the same over three nights at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York in January.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Abbott Elementary Season 4, Episode 22, “Straight to Hell.”] Abbott Elementary‘s Season 4 finale has arrived, making way for the show’s latest field trip, which happened to shoot on location at Philadelphia’s Please Touch Museum. While the event saw students of all grades participate, it was a particularly big occasion for teacher Janine (Quinta Brunson), who was meeting boyfriend Gregory’s (Tyler James Williams) father, Martin (Orlando Jones), for the first time ever. Insisting she’d win Martin over, Janine headed into the day confident, but that began to slip as Gregory continued to warn that his father wasn’t likely to mesh well with her bubbly energy. And so, before Janine departed the school for the museum, she stole Gregory’s blazer, donning it to get into “character,” taking on characteristics of Gregory to try and impress his father. The scenario made for plenty of laughs as Janine attempted...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains details from the Season 4 finale of Abbott Elementary.
Season 4 of Abbott Elementary ended with a big milestone for Janine (Quinta Brunson) and Gregory’s (Tyler James Williams) relationship.
In the finale, titled “Please Touch Museum,” Gregory enlists his dad Martin (played by Orlando Jones) to chaperone the end-of-year school field trip to the iconic children’s museum in Philly. In doing so, he’ll also be meeting Janine for the first time, which, naturally, neither Janine nor Gregory takes lightly.
Rather than be herself, Janine adopts a tough-guy attitude to impress Martin, a former military officer. It’s confusing not only for Gregory but also her second grade students, who are used to the whimsical Ms. Teagues who always encourages fun. Eventually, after a student gets hurt, Janine realizes that her gentle, playful attitude is her superpower, and she drops the facade. Not only does...

I am not going to pretend for an instance to know anything about the life and works of Gaylord Dubois. I do think it is a bold move to feature someone from the Golden Age as the main feature interview when comics and especially superhero comics are such a pinnacle. Dubois has written all of the pulp heroes you can think of; Tarzan, Turok and The Lone Ranger. He began writing Lone Ranger in 1936. This seems like a lifetime ago. It’s pre-wwii! But when you think of it in terms of comics it’s not that far away from Fantastic Four #1 in 1963. Really...

TV has tackled Sherlock Holmes many times over the years, most recently with the BBC’s Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and the long-running Elementary (Jonny Lee Miller). Currently, there’s Watson with the good doctor as the main character (played by Morris Chestnut) and a missing Holmes (voiced by Matt Berry in a hallucination). Lifelong Sherlock Holmes devotee executive producer Brendan Foley joins the crowd with his new show about the world’s most famous detective, Sherlock & Daughter. In this take, the executive producer wanted it to be set in foggy Victorian London for canon fans, while inviting newcomers in with the introduction of Amelia Rojas (a feisty Blu Hunt), an independent and determined young American woman. “Amelia crashes into the life of Holmes [a perfectly cast prickly David Thewlis, who, like Foley, is a major Holmes fan] like a meteorite,” says Foley. She announces he’s her father and insisting that he investigate the...

Charlie Day has been a part of the industry for several decades now, with a slew of well-acclaimed projects to his name. But just like many in the industry, there’s one role that pushed him to Hollywood stardom. The role in question is that of Charlie Kelly in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He joined the show in 2005, and now, almost twenty years later and sixteen seasons down the line, fans still remember it with great affection.
While the sitcom has been a cultural phenomenon, with episodes that can rank quite high on the comedy quotient. But apparently the best performance of Day happened when he completely broke off character.

While in normal circumstances, the creator would make the actor repeat the scene. But here, his acting was so remarkable and hilarious that it made it to the final cut.

Ah, the soul-crushing anguish of watching a TV show you’ve poured your heart into get canceled before its time. It’s like reaching the final page of a gripping novel only to realize the last chapter has mysteriously disappeared. No closure, no satisfying resolution—just an emotional black hole where your TV joy used to be.
But ABC’s recent renewal of seven beloved shows, including Abbott Elementary and The Rookie, comes as a sigh of relief for fans who’ve invested their hearts in these characters and stories. Meanwhile, nestled within the good news is a pang of uncertainty: the fate of Doctor Odyssey remains in limbo. That’s right, the high-profile, star-studded Ryan Murphy series might get scrapped after just one season.

As It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia fans wait with alcohol-scented breath to see what R-rated hijinks the Paddy’s Pub crew gets into during Season 17, actress Mary Lynn Rajskub is ready for anything.
Rajskub got into the slurping, mashing spirit of her FX(X) character Gail the Snail on Monday, taking to Instagram with a video of her lip-syncing along to her lines from Season Five’s “The Gang Gives Frank an Intervention.”
“Huh, jealous?” she mouthed along to the clip, tossing her blonde hair into Gail’s signature half-up hairdo. “I’m a woman now, I’m not a virgin anymore.”
Completing the transformation into her mollusk-inspired alias by taking off her jacket to reveal a tank top similar to Gail’s in the 2009 episode, Rajskub offered yet another message for fans: She may be in her 50s, but the “The Garbage Pail Cousin” is still coming into her own.

Janelle James became an instant fan-favorite when “Abbott Elementary” debuted in 2021. She was relatively new to the acting game when she joined the sitcom, having previously focused mainly on stand-up. But stepping into the role of the glamorous, rule-breaking school principal, Ava Coleman, brought her blunt humor and wide-eyed gags to a larger audience, earning her Emmy nominations for three years in a row and constant praise from critics.
In the beginning of the series, Ava came off as incompetent and uncaring, constantly causing problems for the Abbott Elementary teachers who liked to do things by the book. But there’s always been more to Ava than meets the eye, and by Season 4, she had truly proven herself as an advocate for her students and teachers, even if her methods are rather unorthodox.
So it was a real shocker when, in the March 19 episode “Audit,” Ava got fired. The school...

Watson, the CBS medical mystery-drama loosely based on Sherlock Holmes’s trusty sidekick, Watson, from Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes book series, has been renewed for a second season. Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Morris Chestnut-led Watson was picked up for its second season just halfway through its first.
Watson has garnered steady ratings since it premiered in late January 2025. The show, which airs on Sunday nights on CBS, had 9.58 million viewers during its debut episode following the NFL’s AFC Championship game on Jan. 26. The premiere episode, over five weeks, had 18.7 cross-platform viewers with 7 million watching on Paramount+. The Paramount+ number marks the highest viewership on the streamer for the current television season.
Per Nielsen’s linear data, Watson has just below 6.8 million viewers per episode. Those numbers include DVR playback but not streaming. The renewal comes even though the series has a less-than-stellar 33% Rotten Tomatoes audience score.

The prescriptions are out. Morris Chestnutwill be solving more medical mysteries, as CBS has officially ordered a second season for its newest medical drama, Watson. Though the show debuted to mixed reviews, the decision comes after the premiere episode became the network’s most-watched scripted episode of 2024-25, per Deadline’s report. And while the first-ever season has garnered disappointing Rotten Tomatoes critics and audience scores, a new season order will enable the series to flesh its story out further.
According to Nielsen (via Deadline), Watson has been averaging a total of 6.79 million viewers each week, which immediately warranted the series a Season 2 order. Described as a “medical show with a strong investigative spine,” Watson — which debuted on CBS earlier this year — picked up six months after the death of the titular character’s longtime detective partner, Sherlock Holmes. Uh, is anyone else just in complete denial of what happened in last week's episode of Abbott Elementary season 4? I mean, how could Ava be fired? What's the school going to look like without Principal Coleman around? I think when the show first started, us as an audience and the staff themselves never thought we'd miss Ava or want her to continue being principal.
But despite Ava still being Ava, she's also grown a lot and and proved that she is capable of running the school in her own way. Now, that's going to change! As co-showurnner Justin Halpern told The Wrap, yes it was a selfless act. But, Ava also thought that she'd just be suspended for a week and then come back. So she didn't mind taking the fall at that point. Unfortunately, and I hate to say this, it may have been better for one of the...

The drive from Thessaloniki’s airport into the city begins like any other: car dealerships and furniture stores that give way to bustling street life. Home to over a million people, with a teeming port and the country’s largest university, Thessaloniki is the second-biggest city in Greece with a populace that only grows denser as you wind your way past its Byzantine walls and Roman Rotunda towards the glistening Aegean Sea. Attending the city’s biannual film festivals, I’ve taken this journey several times in the last few years, most recently on a shuttle with Dionysia Kopana, a filmmaker from Athens whose latest, NovaMax Skyland, was premiering the following night. Along the way Kopana spoke about the precarious independent cinema scene in Greece, the earthquake that recently threatened to sink Santorini, and the demonstrations that had been breaking out across the country that week to mark the anniversary...

Some television series are the perfect length. Unfortunately, most overstay they're welcome just a bit. It's an incredibly difficult thing to pull off a great television show, and it's even harder to keep it on the air. No matter what, it's a good thing when shows can continue for as long as they can.
However, fans and critics alike have wondered and discussed when particular shows could've wrapped up sooner than expected. Although it's great for a show to work for as long as the networks will allow, some shows could've ended on a perfect note sooner.
Will Ted Lasso Return for Season 4? Ted Lasso
Ted Lasso was one of the best, most heartwarming sitcoms to come out in recent years, and audiences can find the show on Apple+. Jason Sudeikis leads an ensemble of charismatic and likable characters through life and football, and viewers instantly fell in love with the show.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Abbott Elementary Season 4 Episode 16, “Books.”] Abbott Elementary explored an important lesson on book bans in its latest episode, aptly titled “Books,” which saw Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph), Ava (Janelle James), and librarian Ms. Inez (Cree Summer) combat the dangers of uninformed parents. While the series is always good about tackling topical issues, Abbott Elementary‘s decision to address book bans in school libraries is especially appropriate, as more and more librarians are being forced to remove titles from the shelves across the country. The predicament in this episode revolves around a title, The Sassy Wizard Kid (think Harry Potter), which library volunteer and Abbott mom Krystal (Raven Goodwin) isn’t cool with. When Krystal overhears Barbara, Ava, and Ms. Inez talking about the title, she takes issue with the book’s accessibility to students. “As a Christian, I don’t like magic,” Krystal tells the women while asserting her religious stance...

It’s a reality show takeover on many networks tonight, Wednesday, March 5. Take a look at everything you can watch.
Wednesday nights have been all about game shows on CBS. That’s changing. After last week’s return of Survivor, we have a return of another reality show straight after. Wednesdays are starting to feel a little more back to normal.
The Amazing Race, The Masked Singer, and more
CBS and Fox are all about reality and game shows right now. Even ABC is filled with reality and game shows after an initial block of comedy. If you want drama, you’ll want to turn to NBC or The CW.
The Amazing Race is back tonight, Wednesday, March 5. The new contestants will set off for Hong Kong, where they will need to make their first big decision of the competition. It’s a 90-minute episode, with CBS bringing back the popular competition shows back-to-back.

In the upcoming film Audrey’s Children, actor Natalie Dormer plays Dr. Audrey Evans, a pediatric oncologist whose work shaped modern treatments for children with cancer. Set for theatrical release on March 28, the film follows Evans’ arrival at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in 1969 as the first female Chief of Oncology.
Dormer’s performance highlights Evans’ efforts to challenge medical bureaucracy and workplace discrimination while introducing new approaches to treating young cancer patients.
Directed by Ami Canaan Mann, the film focuses on Evans’ development of the first Neuroblastoma Staging System, which allowed doctors to classify and treat patients based on disease progression.
It also highlights her role in co-founding the first Ronald McDonald House, which provides housing for families with children receiving treatment. The trailer, released by the production team, shows Dormer portraying a determined and compassionate physician dedicated to reshaping the field of pediatric oncology.
