Kids’ content is a dominating force on digital platforms–and a big business, with giants like Moonbug, Pinkfong, and WildBrain making tens or hundreds of millions of dollars from IPs they built on YouTube.

Now a new company, helmed by a team of writers, directors, producers, and executives with experience at YouTube, Nickelodeon, Disney, Apple TV+, and Max, wants a slice of that pie.

The Kids’ Table, which describes itself as “a premium content company for creators and brands,” launched this week, promising it “will provide the expertise to deliver high-quality, evergreen stories and build franchises that reach kids wherever they are, on screens, platforms, and devices worldwide.”

It’ll do that by offering individual content creators and companies original IP development, help with adapting existing IPs into other mediums, content slate building, production resources, and licensing. It says digital distribution of these IPs on YouTube “will play a key role” in its overall strategy.

A group of kids & family executives, writers, directors, producers from Nickelodeon, Disney, Apple TV+, YouTube, and Max have launched company The Kids’ Table, focused on producing and distributing content targeting kids and family audiences across platforms.

It plans to team up with brands which have not had significant exposure in film TV or digital as well as YouTube creators for original IP development, adaptation of existing material, content slate building, full-scale production, content extensions, and licensing. The idea is for the content to be financed by the brands before it is taken out to streamers.

“We are not consultants,” co-founder Chris Viscardi said. “We’ve spent our entire careers crafting characters, creating unforgettable worlds, and producing stories that kids and families return to again and again. Now, we’re ready to deliver the same results to brands.”

Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Orion and the Dark and projects from the Sesame Street universe were among the big winners at the 2025 Children’s and Family Emmy Awards main and creative arts ceremonies on Saturday.

Percy Jackson, which scored an early season three renewal on Friday, months before season two premieres on Disney+, won eight of the 16 awards for which it was nominated. The series has recorded more viewing time than any original show on Disney+ outside of the Marvel and Star Wars franchises, as measured by Nielsen.

In the main ceremony, Percy Jackson won best young teen series and directing for a single-camera live-action series “I Accidentally Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher” in a tie with “The Big City” episode of A Real Bug’s Life. It won six more awards in the creative arts ceremony.

The 2025 Children’s and Family Emmy Awards announced its nominations on Thursday. This is the third year since these categories were separated from the Daytime Emmys in an extensive restructuring of the television academies’ TV awards. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences today revealed the nominees for its third annual Children’s & Family Emmy Awards, the stand-alone competition that honors creativity and innovation in children’s entertainment.

Winners will be feted during the 2024 Children’s & Family Emmys ceremony March 15 in Los Angeles. Winners in the Juried Individual Achievement in Animation categories will be announced early next year, as will the Lifetime Achievement honoree and ceremony host and presenters.

The Children’s & Family Emmys are on the move. As the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences on Thursday revealed the nominations for the 3rd annual event, it also announced that the ceremonies would take place on March 15 in Los Angeles. (The competition’s first two years were held in December.)

As for the nominations themselves, leading the charge was Disney+’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” with 16 nods — including for young teen series, where it faces off with Disney+’s “Goosebumps,” Netflix’s “Heartstopper,” Netflix’s “One Piece” and Roku Channel’s “The Spiderwick Chronicles.”

“Percy Jackson” also received nods for several performers, including a posthumous nod for Lance Reddick. Other programs performing well include HBO/Max’s “Sesame Street” (13 noms), “Spiderwick Chronicles” (13 noms), Netflix’s “StoryBots: Answer Time” (10 noms), Apple TV+’s “Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock” (10 noms), “One Piece” (9 noms) and “Goosebumps” (9 noms).

The 2nd annual Children’s & Family Emmys got underway on Saturday night, starting with the Children’s & Family Creative Arts Emmys at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. According to early results — pending final tallies — Disney+ and Netflix tied the lead with nine wins overall.

The most honored program of the evening was actually Netflix’s “Lost Ollie,” which scored five trophies. Disney+’s wins included multiple awards for “The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special” and animated series “Baymax!” Nickelodeon picked up five wins.

And it was also a good night for Disney via its linear Disney Channel, which picked up four wins.

Curses! is a new animated series from Apple TV+ and Dreamworks Animation that follows a family trying to reverse a generations-long curse. The series features a talented voice cast, including Emmy Award nominee Gabrielle Nevaeh and SAG award winner Reid Scott. Curses! is set to premiere just in time for Halloween on October 27, along with other animated shows like Interrupting Chicken and Shape Island's Halloween special.

If you’re looking for family-friendly programming, you might assume Disney+ is your best choice. But according to the Parents Television and Media Council, families might want to look elsewhere for a safe harbor. The group looked across the streaming landscape to catalog which platforms offered the most TV-g or TV-pg original series.

Interestingly, Apple TV+ was rated the best service for family programming. It offers the largest number of TV-g-rated original programs. Twenty-six out of 139 programs (19%) were rated for general audiences. Only 6% were rated PG. Half (50%) of all original content on AppleTV+ is rated TV-ma.

The worst platform for family-friendly content is Prime Video. Less than 3% of original content is rated TV-g or TV-pg. Prime Video’s content spend has been seemingly erratic, with major funding going to Thursday Night Football, and effects-heavy epics like “The Wheel of Time” or “Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.

Apple TV+ has become a surprising epicenter of great original kids' programming. Over the past few years, the streaming service has established itself as one of the most broad and prolific producers of children's and kids' content. There are always some great shows for kids to dive into and now there are even new shows on Apple TV+ thanks to DreamWorks! A new announcement came out from the popular streaming network that announced a second season for the Sterling K. Brown series Interrupting Chicken that will return on September 29 with even more imaginative stories! Shape Island is coming back on October 20 as well with a new Halloween-themed special.

Apple TV+ is expanding its kids and family programming slate with the order of the new animated series “Curses!” Variety has learned exclusively.

“Curses!” will premiere on the streaming service on Oct. 27. It hails from DreamWorks Animation with John Krasinski among its executive producers.

The series is described as a spooky adventure comedy. The official description states, “When a generations-long family curse turns Alex Vanderhouven to stone, it’s up to his two kids, Pandora and Russ, and his wife Sky, to return artifacts stolen by their ancestors to their rightful homes to finally lift the curse for good.”

The voice cast includes: Gabrielle Nevaeh as Pandora, Andre Robinson as Russ, Lyric Lewis as Sky, Reid Scott as Alex, Rhys Darby as Stanley, James Marsters as Larry, Rhea Perlman as Margie, Phylicia Rashad as Georgia Snitker, and Robert Englund as Cornelius.

Jim Cooper and Jeff Dixon created “Curses!” and serve as executive producers.
