"The Demented" is sort of a reminiscent of a lower-budget version of "28 Days Later". So is that a good thing or a bad thing? Well that depends on what kind of zombies - or infected - you enjoy in movies.
Story-wise, then "The Demented" is a very standard movie as movies go in the zombie genre. A group of young people find themselves trapped in a rural setting when a biological outbreak takes place - turning people into crazed killers. And I would use the term zombie loosely here, as they aren't exactly zombies, if you measure them up by the standard of many movies in the genre.
The infected in the movie, like in "28 Days Later", are agile and fast running. And for some reason they have to make sounds like prowling animals. And also, once you become infected, your clothes become shredded and ripped. Try looking at all the infected, their clothes is all torn and ripped, and they are smeared in blood, yet they don't have any visible cuts, wounds, bite marks and the like. It was a little bit too ridiculous.
The way the movie ended was actually a nice twist to an otherwise generic zombie movie. I will not spoil anything by mentioning it here, but I didn't see that ending coming, not by a long shot.
As for the title of the movie, well, they could have found something more appropriate, as "The Demented" doesn't really do a zombie movie any kind of justice in any possible way.
For a zombie movie, then "The Demented" didn't really bring anything new or innovative to the genre. Everything in the movie has been done or seen before. But still, the movie was enjoyable and actually fared well for a movie of this production value.

There are movies that have in-depth plots. There are movies that have interesting, complex characters. These films often make us contemplate our existence through obtuse themes that require introspection and careful pondering. And there are movies that are none of these things and yet still maintain a level of entertainment - visceral experiences that emote excitement, or fright, or romance, or comedy... perhaps even all four if we're lucky.
The Demented has none of these traits. It is devoid of any artistic originality. It is predictable and bland. Watching it makes me contemplate how much I value the hours I have left on this earth, and whether or not I should choose to go do something else right at this moment. But The Demented is a cheap zombie flick, and this fact alone forgives many sins.
The ending however, catapults this film past redemption. It makes me angry in ways that other things make me angry, like willful ignorance, 3rd world poverty, and excessive Facebook selfies. In the last few minutes of the film, just before the credits rolled, had there been a baby present, I would have punched he/she in the face. Had there been an invaluable painting handy, I would have smashed it into oblivion and declared art dead forever.
This is what you can look forward to if you decide to watch this film. Perhaps that's what you're after: a reason to be depressed and angry at the world. Perhaps you're manic and need a reason to not love yourself anymore. Then this is the film for you.

4 friends get together at another friend's house to have fun. Along with his girl, this makes 3 couples. At some point during the course of their get together, they receive news of a terrorist attack via a telephone call from their friend's father who owns the house they're partying in. They are freaked out, naturally, and wonder if they should leave or stay put. They decide to stay (Hmmm...this can't be good).
They later become besieged by zombies of the fast-moving kind who for some reason at one point in the movie can't figure out what to do about a gate that is only a few inches taller than them. Reminds me here of the zombie movie with Dolph Lungren. Steep stairs are a breeze, but apparently this ability is not transferable to going over a gate 2 or 3 inches taller than you. Ah, well, can't have everything.
Let's see now... In this movie there's a lot of running, panicking, screaming, yelling as the zombies try to thin out the herd (the weak, the infirmed, the stupid...you know how it is). And what would a zombie movie be without some occasional "laying low". Or to put it in less cool terms: "Waiting until the dead stinking things leave". It becomes kind of like a video game. The group (whats left of them), learn that choppers are picking up survivors at strategic locations. Can they get to a rescue point without being the main course at a zombie banquet? If they can they get to fly away and give everything below them the middle finger.
The ending of the movie might be somewhat puzzling. There are 2 possible endings depending on WHEN the woman was dreaming or imagining things. You have to decide for yourself. Oh yeah, before I close, I must tell you that this movie strain of zombies are often in some kind of trance or suspended animation; dormant and "statue-like" until their food unwittingly wakes them by making too much noise. Then they become Olympic material. In a way it's kind of flattering though. You know, that something thinks you're so delicious that they break all kinds of records to get to you. Now that's love. Boloxxxi.

I was not expecting too much from the movie and it proved me right.
The acting seemed at least capable and sometimes quite good with Kayla Ewell and Ashlee Brian standing out a little.
The story line was the standard, people turn to Zombie like creatures and normal people turn to morons. Surely they could get someone to write in sensible characters. We are told it's important to be quiet but throughout the movie not only do the girls scream like banshees, they also constantly talk at the top of their voices or shout. Why is it that decent believable situations and characters are rarely written in to these movies? It's as though the movie makers just want to annoy the audience.
It's a low budget movie so don't expect any great special effects, major celebs or even minor ones. The "28 Days Later" style zombies lack the realism or makeup of said movie.
You might be disappointed by the ends of the movie, but if you have little else to do this is not the worse Zombie film I have ever seen and could have been quite good with believable characters even though it brought nothing new to the genre.

The acting is just horrible. They claim it's a rural area, but it's clearly a suburb. They see a mushroom cloud a few miles away, but choose to stay put. It was a terrorist bomb, it's no telling if nuclear fallout is headed towards you. Any person with a half on brain would have left.

'The Demented.' The latest in a seemingly never-ending line of zombie films. Only the monsters aren't zombies - they're more the 'infected' that we've seen before in 28 Days/Weeks Later or the 2004 remake of Dawn of the Dead. Both films were great successes, but, just because you have 'running zombies,' doesn't guarantee you an automatic hit.
Perhaps the main problem here are the characters. Okay, this is a horror film and no one's expecting deep and meaningful character developments with watertight arcs etc, but, both Dawn of the Deads, 28 Days/Weeks Later and others like them, proved that just because your heroes are getting chased by zombies, doesn't mean you can't give them some decent traits to make the audience relate to them.
In The Demented we have six friends. Let's call them, 'Attractive Blonde Female, Attractive Brunette Female, Attractive Mixed-race Female, Attractive Dark-haired Male, Attractive Blond-haired Male and Attractive African-American Male.' For that's all they are - we never really learn anything about them, so we don't really care when they start getting chewed up one by one.
And there isn't really that much gore. I know this is a cheap film, but a bit of entertaining mayhem might have given it a bit more of an edge. So our six generic protagonists get caught up in a zombie outbreak. How does it happen? Does it matter? Do you care? They just do. So they're chased continually, in between sneaking here and there while the zombies are 'sleeping standing up.' Whatever.
If you've never seen a zombie movie before (there must be one of you) then you may actually enjoy this. Or if this was made all those years ago before Night of the Living Dead, it may even have been called 'groundbreaking' and 'a classic.' However, it wasn't. And there's absolutely nothing here that you haven't seen before. If you like zombie films (or running zombie films in particular), stick with Dawn of the Dead 2004 or either 28 Days Later film. Both have budgets, gore, suspense, action and decent characterisation in them. The Demented has none of those, sadly.

I'll keep this review short. I don't really like this film at all, it was way too dark even for a zombie film.
I don't remember much from this, and that's another problem, it was too forgettable. All I remember is that a group of friends get together for the weekend or something,
and then a zombie apocalypse happens.
Now I do like at least like some zombie films including The Walking Dead. but this film starts with promise and ends very badly.
I watched this because Sarah Butler was in it but even that didn't save this movie.
Most people like happy endings or at least an upbeat one in this subject matter.
A lot of you on here are right, this film honestly sucks.
The characters could have been written a lot better, hell the whole movie could have been a lot better.
Theirs nothing to like in this film, no humor, on fun, sexy sidekicks, no one liners, no nudity, sex scenes, no bad ass weaponry, no bad ass vehicles, no villains other than the zombies, no epic chase scenes, no cool explosions, I could go on but you get the point.
Overall, I think it sucked which is a shame because it would have been cool if the writers and director would have gave us a cool zombie film that I think we all would have liked.
I give it a 1/10. it was just awful.

I have to give the first positive review for this film because the ones available at the moment are terribly close-minded and harsh. The consensus of the current reviews bitch and moan about the ending, which I felt, was incredibly realistic. I actually found that to be a quality most likable about this film is its ability to be realistic for such a low-budget zombie film. By realistic, I mean that the characters are relatable when it comes to their reactions and their fates. They make choices and they die like one actually would given there be a zombie apocalypse. It is difficult to write a zombie film that stands out anymore due to our zombie obsessions. That being said, sometimes its fun just to watch a film that portrays that very situation, play out naturally without there being something totally new and never-before-seen. CHILL OUT people!! It's a low-budget zombie film! I don't know why people expect so much from films, especially the low-budge indies. If you're not pretentious and/or jaded, but you like a fun zombie apocalypse film, then you will probably have a fun Sunday afternoon watching The Demented. Plus, let me just point out that the zombie sleeping thing was incredibly creative and really very creepy in my opinion. That was a super cool new zombie characteristic, mad props to the writers on that.

I don't know why this got such a low rating on IMDb. The acting wasn't top-notch, but it was good enough, certainly better than the 3.8 stars that it currently has.
It's a low budget take-off of 28 Days Later, but they do a fair enough job on it. Sarah Butler's the reason I watched this, but she wasn't used to her full potential. Kayla Ewell is the protagonist. Her acting's never been that great, even in The Vampire Diaries. And she kept yelling at very inappropriate times, such as when they needed to be silent. Gosh, that was annoying.
They had a subplot between Charlie and Naomi. I thought they'd have Charlie somehow tell the others she let Naomi die, but that never happened. I don't know why they bothered putting that in the movie unless they just wanted the audience to dislike Charlie.
Overall, I was entertained. Again, the acting wasn't top-notch, but the movie was fun. I gave this movie a 5-star rating. If you like virus movies that make people turn into drooling, blood-thirsty cannibals, you'll enjoy this. If you're expecting The Walking Dead or Dawn of the Dead, forget it.

This was a film I was willing to give a chance, but like most low budget films in this genre it fails beyond belief. Think a low budget '28 days later' with splatters of 'World war z', but on a much smaller scale, a waaaaaaaay smaller scale. The intensity and ferocity was there, but it was obvious the budget didn't allow for much. The 'infected' appeared to be dressed by some wannabe costume designer, who for whatever reason decided to dress all the infected in the same tattered clothing. The film featured a pretty good young cast which included Sarah Butler from the 'I spit on your grave' remake. The saving grace to the film if any was the performance by Kayla Ewell, who seemed to be the only one who took her role serious. Again on the subject of budget, it was obvious the producers couldn't afford karo syrup and red dye number five because it was a near bloodless film. So don't be fooled by the DVD cover, you'll be greatly disappointed if you're expecting a gorefest. Lastly, the ending, believe me when I say this film has one of the most dumb and confusing endings in the history of horror films. I don't know what else I could say about this film without reviewing it with spoilers, but since I'm never the one to divulge spoilers, I'll leave up to you to decide if you wished you De-rented the Demented.

It was actually bearable until the girl started her awful, horrifically fake screaming. She literally made me want to rip her throat out with my bare hands just so I could watch her die. . . not screaming.
😏 I wasted almost two hours on this. I have a migraine from the stupid screams. Aspirin please! I would advise no one to watch. Unless you can't hear. Please, never EVER hire her for anything!

Everything about it was bad, predictable, boring. There was nothing worth seeing in this movie, if you're looking for a cool zombie movie definitely don't watch this there are way better ones. The six friends fighting for their life are a bit annoying, everything is expected and not in an entertaining way. The fights are not even good, the zombies look very bad, the actors are not great, the effects are funny and what else can I say? I think that's enough to convince you that this movie is not worth your time but if you still desire to watch it go ahead! Loose time and then come here to give a bad review.

Heading out for a weekend getaway, a group of friends staying at a remote mansion house find themselves stuck in a quarantined zone when a terrorist attack unleashes a biological infection that turns people into ravenous zombies and must try to stay alive.
This one wasn't all that bad of a zombie effort. What really works here is the fact that there's quite a lot of rather fun and frantic zombie action on display which gives this one such a fun and exciting pace throughout here. From the opening shot of the missile striking and going off, there's quite a great deal of action that occurs after then which starts with the encounter with the rabid dog and leads into the great road-side brawl with the infected citizen that gives this a nice start before the zombies attack the house. Those are rather fun as well with the film featuring plenty of fine fighting in the kitchen to the chasing upstairs into the bedroom and dealing with the creatures there, and the eventual escape plan of running past them to get to the car and eventual safety makes for a thrilling action set-piece as they race past the creatures and get to safety. The scenes of them in the town are also quite fun with the group running into the massive horde on several occasions leading to some thrilling moments getting chased down the streets and into the back alleyways trying to dodge the snarling beings right on their heels and wading through the apocalyptic imagery there which leads to some chilling scenes here. The fact that the chilling finale is quite fun which goes for the rather daring series of chases throughout the college and into the big brawls in the hallways as there's more brawls and fights with the zombies running after them and generating plenty of solid chills here. Alongside the fine- looking zombies that are given a nice new trick with them being frozen stiff until they hear a sound and then snap into action which generates a great deal of positive points, these here are what work for this one. Even with these positives, there's a few minor flaws here in the fact that the film really slows down considerably in the middle here as there's long stretches of time with them in the house debating their plan of action and being hidden away from the zombies which reduces these segments to a crawl-like pace. It's a little too long to last in a film like this which features them going at a faster clip and probably could've gone at a faster cadence since it doe slow the film somewhat. Likewise, there's also the fact that this one really does seem a lot drier than most others would expect in a zombie film with a large amount of gruesomeness cut out of the film with the majority of the carnage committed against the zombies and only minor bits of flesh-ripping and other rather violent bits here. Otherwise there's not a whole lot to really dislike here.
Rated R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.

In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Taylor (Kayla Ewell), her boyfriend David (Richard Kohnke) and their friends Brice (Ashlee Brian) and his girlfriend Naomi (Brittney Alger) travel together on vacation to spend a couple of days with their friends Sharley (Sarah Butler) and her boyfriend Howard (Michael Welch) in the house of his family. On the next day, they see a missile exploding near the house and soon they learn that the USA is under a biological terrorist attack. Out of the blue, a hostile dog comes to the real estate and they decide to lock the door and go sleep. On the next morning, the dog is still stalking them and Brice kills it with a baseball bat. David decides to take the dog to the CDC and he discovers that the locals have transformed in sort of zombies. The friends are attacked by these zombies and have to find a means to escape and survive the hordes of zombies. Will they survive?
I have just seen "The Demented" with very low expectations based on the 3.9 IMDb User Rating. However, this underrated movie has a good story but with a disappointing ending. It begins like most of teen horror movies, with a group of friends going to a place where cellular do not work and some dumb attitudes. But the tension grows, and despite the stupid action (for example, why should Brice speed up and consequently lose control trying to veer off from a zombie child and overturn the car?), the movie is not bad. The conclusion could have been an alternate dark ending on the DVD Extras. My vote is seven.

My summary line is actually the title the movie got released in Germany! Yes they changed "Demented" into "Terror Z". Actually not only that, they used a still from "I spit on your grave" with Sarah Butler holding an Axe. Talk about "demented"! But that is not the reason why I only gave this movie 3/10.
It starts pretty much like your standard/average horror movie cliché. But it's 6 instead of usually 5 young people meeting up to go to a cabin (with just one car, which kind of makes sense). The ratio is 3/3 (male/female that is) and obviously you get beautiful people/actors starring in the movie. Which I don't have a problem with. And it's not like this is a movie where there are big acting challenges. Look scared, be angry, be terrified. Feel hurt and some other basic things, that are checked (cliches again).
It still had some nice moments within, though I myself wouldn't count the ending as one of them. Apart from being dragged out, it tries too much to be clever. Didn't work for me
