Starz has announced the movie and TV titles that will be available on the service in May. The Starz May 2025 schedule includes the season four finale of Power Book III: Raising Kanan, plus movies such as Flight Risk, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3, and the American Pie franchise.

A blockbuster-worthy lineup of fan-favorite films will also be available. Exclusive: Brec Bassinger, who is starring in the upcoming sixth Final Destination movie, is leading The Evilry, a supernatural coming-of-age thriller.

Elena Kampouris (My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3) has boarded alongside Bassinger, with the pair joining Dylan Walsh, Marissa Reyes (Ganymede), Evan Ross (The Loneliest Boy in the World), Tony Pierce (The Bodyguard) and Teri Polo (the Meet the Parents franchise).

The plot is being kept under wraps but is centered on a visiting relative, played by Kampouris, who is harboring a dark secret.

Bassinger is also starring in next year’s Final Destination: Bloodlines along with suspense thriller The Man in the White Van.

The Evilry is directed by Alexander Garcia from his own script. Garcia is producing under his Multi-Valence Productions banner with his producing partners Joanna Quezada, Mike Nease, and Chris Bradds. Anne Stimac, Fabian Alomar, David Bertolino, and Jason Baker are also producing.

Focus Features will release thriller Last Breath in theaters on Feb. 28, 2025.

The film, from Longshot Films and Dark Castle Entertainment, stars Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu and Finn Cole.

Universal Pictures International will distribute Last Breath in select international territories, while FilmNation Entertainment handles international sales on the rest of the world.

Focus Features has scheduled the Longshot Films and Dark Castle Entertainment title Last Breath for Feb. 28, 2025. Currently, Last Breath is the only prolific title on that weekend.

The Woody Harrelson, Simu Liu and Finn Cole thriller, directed by Alex Parkinson, which is based on a true story, follows a deep-sea diver who is battling the raging elements to rescue his crewmate who is trapped below the ocean’s surface.

The movie was developed by father and son Paul and David Brooks of Longshot Films. Hal Sadoff, Norman Golightly, Jeremy Plager, Stewart le Marechal, Al Morrow and Anna Mohr-Pietsch are producing with the Brooks team. The pic is based on the 2019 documentary of the same name.

Longshot and Dark Caste co-financed the movie.

Best Actress in a Leading Role Emma Stone in “Poor Things”

Weekly Commentary: In best actress, the competition is as fierce as it gets. Emma Stone’s transformation into a woman with a child’s brain surgically implanted in Yorgos Lanthimos’ sci-fi comedy “Poor Things” has garnered substantial support.

Barbie may have rescued the box office in 2023, but she could not tip the balance for representation of women in films.

Even as state legislatures consider restricting or eliminating Dei initiatives at public institutions, the percentage of women, women of color and women 45+ in films released in North America in 2023 plummeted to lows not seen in almost a decade. That’s according to the results of a study released this morning by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. In fact, those percentages are the worst since 2014, despite Barbie.

“It is a difficult lesson but one that must be restated: One film does not represent progress across the industry and cannot bear the burden of lifting the industry to inclusion,” wrote the study’s authors Katherine L. Neff, Dr. Stacy L. Smith & Dr. Katherine Pieper.

Although Barbie won the box office last year, a demographic analysis of the rest of 2023’s releases indicates that Hollywood is still investing primarily in male-centered movies.

Just 30 percent of the top 100 films of 2023 featured a female lead or co-lead, the lowest share in a decade, according to the latest research brief from USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. AI2 has compiled this data annually since 2007 (which, at 20 percent, featured the lowest-ever percentage of women protagonists), and last year’s mark is a substantial drop from 2022’s record-high of 44 percent.

“This is a catastrophic step back for girls and women in film,” AI2 founder Stacy L. Hi, Barbie! Great news: Greta Gerwig’s film based on the iconic Mattel doll leads the 14th annual Guild of Music Supervisors Awards nominations with three nods – including best song for both Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” and Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken.”

“Barbie’s” third nomination was in best music supervision for a film budgeted over $25 million. The category recognized the work of music supervisor George Drakoulias, songwriters Eilish and Finneas and Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt who penned “I’m Just Ken.”

Other film contenders are the music supervisors from “Maestro,” “Saltburn,” “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” “Past Lives,” “Wonka,” “Air” among others.

Barbie is the most nominated film for the 2024 Guild of Music Supervisors Awards, landing three nominations, including two in the best song for film category for “What Was I Made For?” and “I’m Just Ken.”

Barbie is nominated for best music supervision for film budgeted over $25 million and scored two nods for best song written and/or recorded for a film for Billie Eilish and Finneas’ “What Was I Made For?” and Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt’s “I’m Just Ken,” performed by Ryan Gosling.

The music supervisors with the most individual nominations are Mike Ladman and Mara Techam, each with five nominations, whose work in advertising includes collaborations with brands like Levis, The New York Times, Hennessy and others.

The box office top 100 remains dominated by men.

There was a slight rise in films made by women and non-binary people released in the UK in 2023 compared to 2022, according to the annual review from Reclaim The Frame, the UK’s gender equality in cinema charity,

But progress is not consistent and not coming quickly enough, said the organisation which marked its 20th anniversary year in 2023.

The number of films made by women and non-binary people and released in the UK rose slightly in 2023 to 27%, or 157 out of 588 films - the same percentage as 2019. In 2022 it was 24%, a 6% drop on the year before.

Ninety-four songs and 149 scores have been deemed eligible in the music categories for the 96th annual Academy Awards, Variety has learned.

Voting began Thursday, with 390 members of the Academy music branch eligible to vote in this year’s competition. And for the first time in years, there appear to be no surprises or glaring omissions.

Any film can submit up to three songs, and the “Barbie” entries were as expected: Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made for,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and the Mark Ronson-Andrew Wyatt song “I’m Just Ken.”

Five other films submitted the maximum of three songs, including two from Disney: the live-action “The Little Mermaid,” with “For the First Time,” “The Scuttlebutt” and “Wild Uncharted Waters,” all by Alan Menken (who won Oscars for the original in 1989) and Lin-Manuel Miranda; and “Wish,” the Julia Michaels-Benjamin Rice tunes including “I’m a Star,...

The movie had a massive opening weekend of $162 million, quickly growing to a worldwide gross of more $1.4 billion, making it the highest-grossing movie of the year so far.
