What a pleasant surprise ....didn't expect that much from this show but it's so good.
Excellent , believable story which starts off slow and gets more gripping with every episode.
First class acting too with characters you can relate too.
Surprised that someone gave it a 5 but maybe it's just too different for them ?
Not for me and I have just three episodes to go so I'm intrigued to see where this German thriller ends up.
I've seen a few of these futuristic , dystopian dramas which just fade out after a couple of episodes but this one certainly doesn't so as I say it's highly recommended.

Someone was wandering why the low ratings. "Probably the German language?" he says. Actually isn't the German language. Is the German acting. And more than that the German acting in a dystopian environment. They simply don't know how to do it. Even the higher rated shows like Dark have the same problem. The whole German society is too correct and rules obedient to produce good actors. That's why their best actors thrived only in Hollywood productions.
This show makes no exception. Starts as a good idea, in fact, another variation of the same old ideea "groups of people dealing with tough shit in a hostile environment" but gets lost in German technicalities, neglecting exactly what a disaster/dystopian show needs to emphasize: human relationships.

The whole idea was intriguing and I was looking forward to seeing this new series. The first few episodes were great. Interesting characters, loads of possibilities. I enjoyed trying work out where the series was going to go. Then the storyline started to bifurcate and fragment.. No real cohesion to the plot but I was still intrigued as to how it was going to wrap up the ending. The flashback as to how it had all started, occurred way too late, this could have been inserted in sections way earlier to keep the guessing game more interesting. The ending was was so horribly lacklustre. Such a disappointment and such a shame after the great beginning. Meh for me.

No idea why 2 of the current 3 reviews are so low. They nearly put me off watching this brilliant german show.
The last 2 episodes which are mostly flashback scenes to how it all began are the best of the series and explain everything. Dark humour seeps within the dark politics of this island haven. Excellent characters abound from the power mad Beatrice who runs the island, the obsessed doctor Marek who is trying to find a cure. Fiona the rebellious teenager who was born on the island who wants to burn the entire system to the ground. Even her mother , Lola, who is the island propaganda chief , becomes more interesting after a slightly annoying start.
Ignore the hate, if you are after a great story and some dark humour this is the show for you. Fingers crossed for season 2.

I've used IMDB for a long time only as a visitor because I genuinely felt that the ratings in almost all cases match my views.
But boy was it wrong here. Started the first episode only to kill time but now at episode wondering what is wrong with the ones rating it so badly.
Story is dense, intriguing, acting (except for the island's lady with the camera) is convincing and the dystopian world is great. Not sure what people expect but the only thing I can think of is that people are tired of pandemics. If so, then this is not for you, fair enough. Everything else is really good in my opinion. Give it a go!

It's an intriguing story about the potential end of the world, but rather than zombies and post-apocalyptic sci-fi, it takes a much deeper look at human nature and what's required to form a functioning society. Thoroughly enjoyed it, liked the fact they explained the origin during the first season, and the characters are all interesting in their own way. And there's no obvious protagonist, so keeps your emotions open (although there are a few distressing and squeamish scenes which some people may find disturbing, but add to the drama and storytelling). Thumbs up from me, can't wait for season 2!

Not sure why the scores are so low. Glad it didn't put me off. Helgoland 513 offers a fresh take on the post-apocalyptic genre. Set on a North Sea island, it explores the psychological and societal impacts of a global apocalypse. The series stands out with its thought-provoking themes, dark humor, and unpredictable plot twists. Strong performances by Alexander Fehling, Martina Gedeck, and Antje Traue bring depth to the characters. The music enhances the show's atmosphere, and the flashback episodes provide crucial context. While some questions remain unanswered, this only heightens anticipation for a potential second season.

No idea why anyone would give a low rating, maybe they don't like the German speech or they watched it in English and something got lost in translation!
The island Helgoland exist for real witch makes the story somewhat realistic and plausible
The Start of the series sets an ominous feeling witch is felt throughout the whole season. Great acting and the story was refreshing to see. There is an autopsy scene that was very real ( for me ) so also kudos for the makeup team.
I would definitely advise to see this series.
Hoping for a season 2 because I really want tot know how this wil go further.

And where are the Arabs, Afghans, Africans? Is there a pure Aryan society of Germans on the island?
This is the limit of absolutization of rationalism of Western thinking - the further away, the more efficient the system should be built, and if a person is already inefficient in it, then this "detail" should be cheapened, replaced or thrown out altogether.
And it is not us who build the future, but those who create narratives like those in this and similar movies. By the way, quite colorful, illustrative and fascinating.
I've only watched three episodes so far, but it's very good.
A peculiar view of the apocalypse, intrigued.

When I read the other reviews I was a bit put off, but I wanted to find out for myself and so I watched the series. Honestly, it's great. Some viewers seemed to have a strong expectation of what they might see in it, but completely without expectation I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed it. It's great storytelling, great acting, the world is superbly constructed, and for a german production it's also very bold and uniquely created. Which is often rarely the case.
What others discribed as becoming absurd is only an imagination of where pandemics like the one we had could lead to. It felt very natural and the turn this sory took I can only describe as positive, because contrary to the often straightforward and easy to understand german series, you are surprised here and that makes it all the more interesting. I would highly recommend to watch it and be open to unique ways of storytelling.

Helgoland 513 is a gripping and thought-provoking series that feels eerily relevant to our world today. Set in an isolated, dystopian society, it explores themes of survival, power, and morality-issues we can all relate to, especially after experiencing the global pandemic. Just like during COVID-19, the show highlights how quickly people adapt to extreme circumstances and how fear can influence decisions about life and death.
One of the most striking aspects is how easily the community votes to determine someone's fate, reflecting how societies throughout history-and even today-can be swayed by fear, propaganda, and the illusion of democracy. The performances are strong, the setting is hauntingly immersive, and the tension keeps you hooked. While some parts could have been explored more deeply, the overall execution is excellent.
If you enjoy survival dramas with deep social commentary, Helgoland 513 is definitely worth watching. 8/10!
